A family of four is brutally murdered and, as usual, it's up to Detectives Lupo and Bernard to find out who did it. After the evidence is compiled and the subsequent arrests are made, then McCoy and his team get involved to get a conviction. Of course, along the way, a little bit of pseudo-psychology is introduced, this time provided by the occasional appearance of Dr. Skoda, played by veteran actor J.K. Simmons.
Rather routine, isn't it? What separates this one from being average is the look into Lupo's (Jeremy Sisto) background, revealing that he experienced a traumatic event in the early days on the force that could be used by the defense to get an acquittal on its client.
Sisto and Anthony Anderson - as Detective Bernard - have developed a chemistry that is wonderful to behold, and their verbal exchanges as well as the glances shared when Lupo is in the witness box are well-executed. Both actors have grown tremendously in their roles which, no doubt, has contributed to the show's ratings rise in this, its 20th year.
