Van Pelt asks what a red herring is and Lisbon jokingly says it means to ignore what Jane tells her. It really means a false lure or a clue that leads to the wrong conclusion. The term comes from England and its use to train dogs for fox hunting. Trainers would drag a dead fox for several miles in order to train dogs to follow the scent of a fox. They would then drag a herring fish across the trail to try to distract the dog's fox trailing. Any dog that deviated from the fox's trail and followed the wrong scent was said to be "chasing a red herring".
This episode uses the former Boston Legal (2004) Crane, Poole & Schmidt offices for Sharon Lawrence's character. She also played a judge on the show.
The documentarian asks Jane why he doesn't want to do the film interview, and Jane replies "Cause you're stealing my soul." This is a reference to some cultures unfamiliar with photograph technology who feared having their pictures taken for fear that the picture stole their soul.
Red-haired actress: Sharon Lawrence.
