Debut filmmaker R.T. Thorne is blasting onto the film scene with action-thriller “40 Acres” starring acclaimed actress Danielle Deadwyler.
Thorne directs the dystopian feature from a script he cowrote with Glenn Taylor. Lora Campbell also has a “Story by” credit on the project as well. “40 Acres” takes place in the near future after a plague kills all animals. Deadwyler plays a former soldier who tries to protect both her family and her inherited farm land from a cannibalistic militia.
The official synopsis reads: “As famine spreads across the globe, society is at war and in ruins. But the Freemans are surviving — even thriving — on their ancestral farm so long as they dispatch the occasional raiding party. But what good is surviving the end of the world if it means snuffing out your own humanity? Former soldier Hailey (Deadwyler) made that choice years ago, believing that isolation was the only way to protect her family.

As A Minecraft Movie keeps chicken jockeying for box-office success, Warner Bros. could ride the film's momentum and make a sequel. The film's helmer is optimistic about a potential follow-up to the live-action follow-up, claiming "it would be fun" to continue the Minecraft story on the big screen.
Speaking with Deadline about A Minecraft Movie, director Jared Hess explored the possibility of a sequel, with the film having teased a potential continuation during the end credits. Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler (Till) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Street, a feature adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, in which she’s set to star.
Also aboard the project is Gina Atwater (Westworld), who will write the script and serve as executive producer.

Hot off the success of Carry-On, which was released in December and delivered the top debut for any Netflix film in 2024, director Jaume Collet-Serra delivered his first theatrical release in three years, The Woman in the Yard. Produced by horror specialists Blumhouse and distributed by Universal, the movie secured a spot in the top five list at the domestic box office, but it wasn't able to crack double digits. Collet-Serra's last theatrical film was the mega-budget misfire Black Adam, which generated around $390 million worldwide against a reported budget of almost $300 million.
It marked his second outing with star Dwayne Johnson, following the adventure film Jungle Cruise, which was released day-and-date on the Disney+ streaming service during the pandemic, under-performing with around $220 million worldwide against a reported budget of $200 million. Universal Pictures has revealed the new trailer for the horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, opening in theaters on March 28. The film has been rated PG-13 for terror, some violent content/bloody images, suicide-related content, and brief strong language.
In the movie, a lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on a family’s front lawn without explanation and warns them “Today’s the day.” Where did she come from? What does she want? When will she leave? Only The Woman in the Yard knows.
From Blumhouse, the most successful global brand in horror, comes a new original chiller starring BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, a woman crippled by grief after she survives a car accident that takes her husband.
Seriously injured, Ramona now must care for their 14-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, alone in her rural farmhouse. Then one day the woman takes form in their yard.

This week’s “Screen Talk” podcast wraps up last weekend’s Film Independent Spirit and Screen Actors Guild awards, and co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson share their final Oscar nominations predictions ahead of the ceremony on Sunday.
We also look at two deaths that took place in the span of 24 hours this week, Michelle Trachtenberg and Gene Hackman. Meanwhile, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2024, and it’s telling how small audience interest was in a number of the streamer’s 2025 Oscar contenders.
At the Spirits, “Anora” was the big winner with three top awards, and director Sean Baker gave a powerful speech about how indies need to sustain careers going forward.
At the SAG Awards, the big surprise was Timothée Chalamet finally notching a win for his performance as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” Will that repeat at the Oscars? No, and we explain why.

Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson's hit streaming series, Poker Face, is set to return this year. And, well? The list of people they've finagled to guest star in Season 2 is actually unhinged. Like, the list of people who are going to be on this show is truly outrageous and unfathomable to someone like me, a person who does not cast television shows. But if I did? And I managed to pull this off? I'd be screaming it from the rooftop, folks. Because this cast list? It's truly the best of the best of the funniest, most talented people currently working in Hollywood.
And it seems that Lyonne and Johnson recognize that, sending along a note with the press release teasing the series' forthcoming slate of episodes. And though we don't know the exact premiere date yet — all it says is "Spring 2025" — we do know the 12, 60-minute-long episodes will feature Many very,...

The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards revealed its 2025 winners Sunday night (Feb. 23). The 15th annual ceremony was held at The Wiltern in L.A.’s Koreatown and honors the year’s best work in songs and scores for screen.
Sunday’s ceremony began with a video about January’s deadly wildfires, in which guild president Lindsay Wolfington lost her home. She thanked the community for rallying behind her during opening remarks with vp Heather Guibert.
The opening remarks didn’t shy away from addressing the Academy’s decision to “move away” from best original song live performances at the 2025 Oscars. “We are proud that our awards for best song written and or recorded for film and for television, acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the songwriters, the performers, and of course the music,” Guibert told the crowd.

It’s always fitting that the Screen Actors Guild Awards take place at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium, because this awards show is a kind of shrine itself: An occasion for Hollywood’s best and brightest to come and pay tribute, with devotional flourishes, to the art of acting. Now, the 2025 SAG Awards winners list has been fully revealed, and indeed you heard the word “craft” a few times: Actors love to pepper that word into their acceptance speeches as if they’re back at the Actors Studio.
The 2025 SAG Awards may have muddied the waters a bit about where the Oscar race stands a week out from the Academy Awards. “Wicked” received the most SAG nominations of any film, with five, including a surprise nod for Jonathan Bailey, as well as Best Ensemble. It’s possible that it’s more poised for below-the-line wins at the Oscars than for its performers,...

Kieran Culkin took home the win for best supporting performance at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Presented by Kathryn Hahn, Culkin won the honor for his work in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, marking his first Spirit Award ever. Culkin — who is starring in Glengarry Glen Ross, which opens March 10 on Broadway — was not present at the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, but Hahn accepted the award on his behalf.
His win at the 2025 Spirit Awards came a little over a month after he won the award for best supporting actor at the 2025 Golden Globes. Culkin, too, became a first-time Oscar nominee this year with a nod in the same category for his portrayal of Benji Kaplan in A Real Pain.

“Anora” won Best Feature at the the 40th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica and was hosted for the second year in a row by Aidy Bryant. “Anora’s” Indie Spirit win follows its recent triumphs at the DGA and PGA awards and boosts its chances for Oscar glory next week. “Anora” also won Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison. Repeating her victory at the BAFTAs, Madison beat Demi Moore, who had been considered the solid frontrunner.
