Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, April 4, 2023.
Netflix is not moving forward with Freeridge Season 2.
The On My Block spinoff launched on the streaming service in February but failed to get much traction.
The original series aired from 2018-21 and racked up impressive viewership for the service, so it's surprising the latest entry failed to resonate.
Freeridge was "a coming-of-age comedy following sibling rivals Gloria and Ines and their friends Demi and Cameron who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives."
Pete Davidson is staging a comeback to Saturday Night Live, but it will be a one-time-only deal.
The SNL alum is set to host the May 6, 2023, installment of the veteran sketch show.
Davidson joined the show in 2014 and departed in May 2022.

As a great man once said, “February: It’s the worst month of the year, but it’s an honest month.” While I disagree with the “worst” part — August, and its sweltering heat, is abysmal— I can’t dispute the honesty inherent to February, especially when it comes to television. The cold weather, early sunsets, and lack of legitimate holidays can leave us exhausted, and when worn out, TV is often the quickest, simplest reprieve.
And in February, there’s no pretending. It’s too early for the networks to release their Emmy darlings, and too late to premiere their most-hyped projects. Instead, audiences are force-fed a whole lot of junk. Sure, there may be a few tantalizing tidbits stuffed into these big ol’ nothing burgers — a favorite actor or an entrancing subject — but the overall result is the same: a lot of bad food, that you may just have to eat anyway.

(Spoiler alert: This article contains Season 1 spoilers for “Freeridge”).
“Freeridge,” the spinoff to Netflix’s coming-of-age dramedy “On My Block,” is not trying to recreate the mystical realism of its predecessor, according to leads Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Bryana Salaz, who anchor the series with their brutally honest portrayal of two sisters often at odds with one another.
“We were all huge fans,” Mejia — best-known for her scene-stealing turns in “Abbott Elementary” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — told TheWrap of “On My Block.” “Funny enough, we knew — we were casted in it — and we all watched the fourth season together. Oh, my God, justice for Spooky! But that’s neither here nor there.”
Despite following a new core four in the title neighborhood as they uncover the mythical happenings around them, co-creator Lauren Iungerich was steadfast in her belief that “Freeridge” would neither replicate nor rehash the four seasons of the show that established its universe.

The cast of the "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," promised the new show would bring all the high jinks, mystery, romance, and life lessons that fans of the original loved, and the series - which hit Netflix on Feb. 2 - certainly delivers.
"Freeridge" season one follows a new core four of high-school friends - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Inez) - as they navigate friendship, love, class conflict, grief, and - believe it or not - a curse wreaking havoc on their lives.
With appearances from familiar "On My Block" characters sprinkled throughout the fast-paced season - like Ruby's parents, Geny (Paula Garces) and Ruben (Eric Neil Gutierrez), as Gina and Inez's neighbors; Jamal (Brett Gray) calling in with some Roller World intel; and an Abuelita look-alike - "Freeridge" packs a punch for old and new fans alike.

Fans of Netflix's "On My Block" were passionate about the slice-of-life show that followed the lives of four friends in Freeridge, CA, as they navigated high school, romance, and socioeconomic hardships. The show ended in the fall of 2021 after four critically acclaimed seasons, and it's safe to say the young cast taking on the mantle of a brand-new core four in its spinoff, "Freeridge," - Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Gloria), Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Cameron), Ciara Riley Wilson (Demi), and Bryana Salaz (Ines) - have quite the legacy to live up to. However, they're the perfect group of up-and-comers to take on the challenge, because they love "On My Block" just as much as its fans.

If you're an "On My Block" fan and thought the show's fourth and final season was the last you'd see of the California town the coming-of-age series is set in, we have good news: Netflix's straight-to-series "On My Block" spinoff, "Freeridge," is finally here.
"Freeridge," which premiered its first season on Feb. 2, features a cast full of fresh faces to fill the void "On My Block" quartet Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby (Jason Genao), Jamal (Brett Gray), and Cesar (Diego Tinoco) left behind. Although the spinoff is named after the fictitious town "On My Block" took place in, "Freeridge" explores an unseen side of the inner-city neighborhood with our new core four - Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), Ines (Bryana Salaz), Cam (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), and Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson).

Freeridge is a comedy series created by Lauren Iungerich, Jamie Dooner and Jamie Uyeshiro. It stars Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Shiv Pai and Bryana Salaz. Freeridge is a different kind of comedy, with very different kinds of characters.
Forget about perfect families living in perfect mansions with blonde bangs in the wind. These four teen friends fight with each other, have real problems and they buy things in supermarkets that offer bargains, and, they have a problem: an ancient box that ruins their lives and makes them be victims of a curse, so they will try to do everything possible and impossible to get rid of it.
Freeridge is amusing although a little conventional and it tries to break away from pre-established rules, but always remains within conventional patterns for teen comedy.

More than a year after the series finale of Netflix’s On My Block teased a new “core four,” the teen dramedy’s spinoff, Freeridge, is ready to make a name for itself. Freeridge, premiering on February 2, shares much of its predecessor’s DNA — and its creators and a few of its actors, too — but strikes out a new story involving a curse that haunts the lead characters. In case you didn’t see On My Block or didn’t watch all of its four seasons, don’t have a Jamal-like meltdown — Freeridge stands on its own. The two shows do, however, have intriguing connections, as you’ll see below… The two shows have different “core fours” On My Block followed four teenagers — Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby (Jason Genao), Jamal (Brett Gray), and Cesar (Diego Tinoco) — and later five — with the addition of Jasmine (Jessica Marie Garcia) — as they navigated...

February is for lovers. But with its list of new releases for February 2023, Netflix is unveiling another season of arguably its least romantic show.

If you don’t get your fill of You this month, stay tuned for the second part of season 4 in March.
You will be joined in February by a third season of another buzzy Netflix original. The kids of Outer Banks return on Feb. 23 to find their literal and metaphorical treasure once and for all. Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.

When we think of telenovelas, we're quick to get nostalgic about the ones we grew up watching with our moms and abuelas. We tend to associate them with being an older-generation thing, with their overdramatic and also very predictable love narratives. But that doesn't mean there aren't young Latinx folks out there who don't tune in. It makes sense, considering there are audiences who do consume content and entertainment both in English and Spanish. In fact, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises established the term "200ers" to describe them, referring to a demographic of Latinxs who identify 100 percent as American and 100 percent as Latinx and "share the values of both cultures, are bilingual, and flawlessly jump between cultures." This would explain why Emmy Award-winning telenovela "El Señor de los Cielos," with its eighth season returning to Telemundo on Tuesday, Jan. 17, has become a cross-generational hit over the years, appealing to a wider Latinx audience than ever thought possible.

Netflix is not proceeding with a second season of Uncoupled, its comedy series from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman.
The cancellation is not surprising. The series, starring Neil Patrick Harris, barely registered on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings, making a single appearance at #6 following its July 29 release. (Half-hour series are at a disadvantage in the ratings system employed by Netflix which measures hours viewed.)
Speculation that Uncoupled would not be continue at Netflix started late last year when sources indicated that there was an effort by series producer MTV Entertainment Studios to find a new home. The plan to move the series to a Paramount Global network, possibly Showtime, fall through, I hear.
Meanwhile, Netflix remains in business with Star as his comedy Emily in Paris continues to deliver big audiences, with its current third season making the Netflix Top 10 in 93 countries. The...

Exclusive: UTA has signed Curb Your Enthusiasm actress Keyla Monterroso Mejia.
Monterroso Mejia made a splash as Maria Sofia Estrada, a short-order cook turned actress, on the 11th season of the Larry David comedy.
Although Maria Sofia’s acting skills leave much to be desired, it’s her dance moves and hilarious banter with Cheryl Hines (and tussle with Ted Danson) that solidifies Monterroso Mejia’s status as an up-and-comer to watch.
She previously starred in the Disney+ short Growing Fangs and the HBO Max short The 90 Day Plan.
Up next, Monterroso Mejia will star as a series regular in Netflix’s On My Block spin-off, Freeridge.
She will continue to be represented by manager Sherry Kayne and attorney Ryan Levin at Jackoway.
