Though I, of course, watched the first season of "Love Life" first, it was actually this second season that was included in the Guardian's top TV of 2022 list. Similarly to the first run, I enjoyed the mix of romantic comedy and drama and found Wiliam Jackson Harper to be an engaging lead.
Marcus Watkins (William Jackson Harper) is an editor, living in New York with his wife Emily (Maya Kazan). A chance encounter with Mia (Jessica Williams) leads Marcus to cheat on Emily emotionally, if not physically, though she discovers the relationship, and the marriage ends. Whilst his connection with Mia comes and goes, he forms a few other relationships over the years, as he recovers from the end of the marriage and creates a new life.
Even though it's focused on an entirely different character, with Anna Kendrick's Darby only making a couple of appearances across the run, the season is very similar to the last, as we see a few years of Marcus' life centred on the relationships he has. Again, we meet his friend group and family, and those relationships are explored similarly to his romantic ones. I would say that this one is slightly heavier than the first run, dealing with Covid, miscarriages and divorce, btu it remains funny largely down to the winning combination of Harper as the lead, and the peerless Keith David as the narrator of this run.
But that was all she wrote for the show, that was cancelled at the conclusion of this second run. It's a shame as I've liked both of them and the anthologising aspect of the show would allow it to run indefinitely. If you're on the fence, I think both seasons are worth your time.
