- As Chamberlain heads to meet with Hitler in Munich, James prepares to face his parents and give them some difficult news. Meanwhile, the prospect of a return to war acts as a timely reminder to make the most of life while you can. But James's agenda is derailed by an emergency with the Alderson's pregnant mare, Candy.
- As the threat of Hitletian war urges to seize life, James proposes to Helen, who accepts. He later asks permission from Helen's grumpy father Richard Alderson, who even hands James his late wife's engagement ring to give to Helen. James's parents visit from Scotland, expecting him to be leaving for a city job there. James apologizes for not having told them he prefers the Dales, but he wants to stay where he is, and announces his redeeming engagement to Helen, then rushes off to save the Aldersons' pregnant mare Candy. Tristan helps out a heartbroken lonely boat-housed crone, who lost her dog after it was hit by a car, but 'tricking' her into taking in a stray dog instead.—KGF Vissers
- James' parents are stopping in Darrowby for a day on their way back to Glasgow, the planned dinner which is a good opportunity for James to tell them something that he has been putting off: that he has decided not to accept the job in Glasgow in wanting to stay permanently in Yorkshire. While the decision is in holistically enjoying his life in Darrowby including the job such as in helping Phyllis Dalby who may be facing yet another crisis with her cattle and despite having to deal with other ornery clients like Isaac Cranford, it is largely due to wanting to be with Helen. With this information, the others at Skeldale put other thoughts in James' mind which does lead to him having an impromptu discussion with Helen about their future. That discussion is disrupted by an emergency at the Alderson farm concerning their pregnant mare, Candy. Meanwhile, Tristan, in having made up with Siegfried, is contemplating whether he should go back to school to retake the one course he failed. His interactions with Mrs. Donovan, a pseudo "witch vet" who doesn't trust conventional veterinary services and is pedaling a shampoo as a cure-all for dogs including for her own, may provide him with some answers including if he is well-suited to a vet's life. And Mrs. Hall has been consumed with news on the radio about current goings-on between Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler, not only as it affects Britain but her own life personally. She gets an unexpected albeit temporary respite from that focus in her life.—Huggo
