History cannot be repeated, however this remake, not so bad!

I saw all of the first generation series of ACG&S back in the day. As for this new series, I'm not disappointed! I did not expect it to be a thumbprint storyline of yesteryear's original. I have read the actual books by Herriot, (James Wright) and this rendition still reflects the innocence and kindness of the veterinarian world and it's timeless demands. Yes, the storyteller of this newer script is trying to bring an awareness of the marginalized people and rightly so! Not everyone was treated fairly as some of the beasts had it better, and now is the time to point that out. I like the new episodes, well done. Keep up the good work.

On Tristan's birthday, Seigfried rewards him with his own veterinary bag and his own list of clients to see, including a wealthy estate with a stable of horses needing a rasping of their teeth.

He goes on to deliver a calf from the breech position, inventing a bit of drama in the process, but later successfully inviting a young rich blond to his birthday dinner.

In fact, all three Skeldale men wind up with dates for the dinner, which makes it uncomfortable when Siefried accidentally lets leak that Tristan failed his Parasitology exam.

As always, we're left with some relationship questions, as the writers like to keep us stretching our curiosity toward the future of the series.

Tristan

Warning: Spoilers
It's Tristan's birthday! But like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the climax of the birthday dinner is explosive for sure, with Tristan learning he didn't pass an exam. But in those days, you can still be a vet without a university degree.

All Creatures Great and Small, the reboot, is kind of safe and clean and uncontroversial. It's the opposite to British dramas like Inside No. 9, Black Mirror and Tales of the Unexpected, where cynicism is the fabric of the story. No cynicism in the scripts for All Creatures Great and Small. But I do wish Danny Dyer would make a guest appearance.

I also would like guest directors like Charlie Booker and Steve McQueen.

Tristan's Big Day--Not

Warning: Spoilers
Tristan is flying high when, on his birthday, Siegfried makes the move to make him a full partner and have his own list of clients. While he stumbles around a bit, he manages to deliver a calf, but makes the whole process very dramatic. It is decided to have a birthday dinner for him and he invites a rich young woman to attend. She is utterly boorish and treats Helen like dirt. James hasn't told Helen about the job offer, so there are a couple of secrets. But Tristan can't keep his mouth shut. When Siegfried raises a glass to him, he can't help but brag about the show he put on, leading the angry Siegfried to blurt out that Tristan never passed his exams. The dinner is ruined and Tristan goes into a big pout. James has to tell Helen about the job offer.

Thus is still a great series but, like the last episode, there does seem to be just a little something missing.

There is the usual drama and there is an emotional speech by Siegfried in honour of his brother that is most touching before turning for the worst.

James and Helen touch hands and have another stolen kiss which is nice to see but the laugh out loud bits just aren't there.

A good watch just the same.
