The film's art director Megan Tweed, whose handwriting appears on Charlie's post-it notes throughout the film, wrote the BELIEVE sign that appears in the AFC Richmond locker room above the door to the manager's office in the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.
After approaching Sex Education's Emma Mackey and Tanya Reynolds, director Joe Street turned to Elissa Churchill for the role of Jess having met her on set while shooting a commercial for the Caledonian Sleeper Train in 2018.
Bubbles the cat was initially going to be named Tobias, after producer Tobias Phillips.
The voice-over that accompanies the film was not in the original script. Upon completion of filming and after receiving the first edit, producers noticed that the story had veered away from the original idea so, rather than shooting additional photography, they made the choice to add a Desperate Housewives style narration to play over the top of the opening and ending.
The script was initially offered to directors B. Welby-Delimere and Brett Goldstein before producers settled on leaving director duties to the film's primary writer Joe Street.
