Slick and professional thriller cum moral drama with excellent performances
Peter_Young26 March 2022
Jalsa is a highly engaging and unsettling moral drama as it is a captivating a gripping thriller. The film is in many ways an effective commentary on the easy way out for those in power, against the helplessness of the common man if front of the gigantic system. It also shows the hypocrisy of the so-called responsible sectors of society, whose ideology cannot stand when put to the test of a contradicting reality or circumstance.

Technically, the film is a delight. It is excellently shot, with slick cinematography, sound and camera work. The dialogue is very good but what's great, is the actual minimal use of it when the visuals offer greater insight into the development of the story and the characters' state of mind. The film is carried by two central female characters who are on opposite sides of the barricades.

Vidya Balan is in top form in a very difficult role which demands exactly what actresses of her calibre can give. Conflicted, confused, ridden with fury, worry and guilt, and constantly at the height of emotional pressure, Balan captures with sheer realism the multi-layered complexity of this grayish character, which most people would find highly unlikable while perhaps at the same time feel for her condition.

But it is Shefali Shah who gives the film its dramatic poignancy and makes what could have been just a thriller into a touching, involving human story. A fascinating actress with tremendous range, measure and the most resonant of facial expressions, her use of her eyes and sometimes just her presence alone achieves so much more than many other actresses ever could with tons of dialogue.

Both Balan and Shah are so immersed in their parts it would be surprising if they weren't emotionally drained after playing their respective parts. They are supported by a host of fantastic character actors, all of whom perform brilliantly. The legendary Rohini Hattangadi is also here and she shines in the little she's given. Jalsa is an entertaining and effective story well depicted on screen.

A gut-wrenching tale of internal conflicts. 👍
Tejas_Vinda_AITS18 March 2022
Jalsa is a slow burn, intense drama that unfolds as a psychological thriller.

It quietly observes the *human behaviour* when pushed over the edge.

This movie a brilliant thriller put together by great performances by everyone involved..., but manav kaul ko kyo liya tha...????😄

Can circumstances override truth and moral principles?

Heath Ledger's iconic line as the Joker comes to mind - "When the chips are down, these 'civilized people'.., They'll eat each other." Do they?

Jalsa gets its title from a trajectory you can't even guess without watching the movie - A good Movie.

Vidya Balan, Shefali Shah; they both have carried it to the very end
SoumikBanerjee199623 March 2022
Suresh Triveni's "Jalsa" might get the marker of a modern-day thriller, but trust me, it's much more than that. The narrative digs deeper into the intricacies of motherhood, with some secondary innuendoes that contemplate class predilections and how society and its people shapes accordingly around them. By the delineation of two women's personal and professional space, we get to observe the disparities as well as the similarities in the way these two characters perceive their circumstances.

When an intriguing Screenplay matches up with a director's profound sense of understanding of a specific subject, the aftermath, the outcomes almost always turns out to be strikingly visceral and eccentric in their own respects, and Jalsa is no exception. Even with a few discrepancies (Pacing issues) and some notable flaws in the script, the narration was enough productive and held its ground to the very end, and that's partly due to two highlighting performances.

Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah, a powerhouse of talents, both have done extraordinary pieces of work here. While the latter one (Shefali Shah) recently found her footing (for the second time in her life) through successive projects for not one but many streaming sites. The former one (Vidya Balan), well, she's a much-renowned face amongst the film fraternity of contemporary times and rightfully so! Vidya is entitled to all the praises that will be coming along her way and so is Shefali for her spirited resurgence.

Inner conflict said in a better way
sanjeevanwar20 March 2022
Anwar Says: The inner conflict of a successful woman set up a narrative and represents the true colours of social composition of Mumbai. Inspired by Malyali movie Kannekkane , the movie Jalsa is a perfect blending of existence and possibility of people in society who are only few degrees apart .

Two intense actors Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah are portraying the emotions and fighting against themselves. Title doesn't support the theme. Cast to watch is the son of Mrs. Balan , Surya Kashibathla , a patient of cerebral palsy , and his incomplete dialogues are so relevant . Rohini Hattangadi was perfect for her role as Mrs. Balan's mother . Casting others around the two leads are up to the mark .

The other distinguishing feature is the background score , sometimes it's total silence and sometimes extra noises . The rapid pace of intricate circumstances by Suresh Trivedi is completely opposite to his last release Tumhari Sulu . You may get confused at some places, some are answered and some couldn't find its way. Overall director has been able to create palpable tension in a sombre mood. 3.5/5 from my side .

Rish_tweets18 March 2022
The tiltle of the movie is quite vague untill climax.

Hit & run case drama which dwells in dark side human of nature is brilliantly perfomed on screen. Vidya, Shefali both are too good.

BGM, Cinematography & production is quite good. Screenplay is crisp.

Usual subject with unique handling & honest performances makes this movie worth a watch.

Jalsa
puranjanbasak19 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Jalsa is a drama thriller directed by suresh triveni. These are the positives and negatives.

Performances:vidya balan is at her peak nowadays. She is giving exceptional performances one after the other. But but Shefali shah outshines her. You can just look at that lady in awe. What a performer, what an actor. Every frame, every expression is so perfect. The supporting cast is highly talented and they have thus delivered the goods.

Background score and music:the sound design is excellent. The accident scene, the aftermath bathroom sequence you see the sound design and you just marvel at it. There are multiple sequences with just ambience sound but the bgm is unnervy and superb.

Writing:writing is its highlight for sure. Just look at that accident scene and how it is staged. Excellent and then the hospital scene where ruksana just looks with a teary eye and can do nothing else. This film is an example of brilliant writing.

Screenplay:the screenplay starts veey well. The first half is epic but the start of second half seems dragged. But again in the last 30 minutes it picks up its pace. So there are some minor faults but nothing major negative.

Climax:the climax is just outstanding. You can feel maya's tension and anguish. She is just so tensed. The last 30 minutes are a gem.

Dialogues:the dialogues are wonderful. In one sequence, maya is sitting with ruksana in an ambulance and ruksana just asks "baba ne khana khaya"? Symbolising her motherhood and care for children. This is just one dialogue but there are plenty .

Cinematography:again, the cinematography is excellent. Every frame, every angle seems so thought out and pitch perfect. The drive sequence after the accident or the bathroom sequence where the corners blur out. Excellent camera work.

The commentary:this film asks a question of morality. Does revenge over children heal everything? And a serious case of hit and run scenarioes. This film does not spoon feed but just tells you to find the answer.

Also if you are thinking how does the name jalsa go with this film you will get the answer by the end of it. It is just so so so good.

Jalsa is a must watch. Its slow paced , its a thoughtprovoking drama thriller. Just be there with the film. I rate it 9.5 out of 10.

Watchable but No Proper Ending
saadkhan-6183319 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story is good and interesting. All the actors have done great job, all of them acted well according to their role. The kid Ayush was phenomenal. The ending is not good, the screenplay is slow, lot of slow motion scenes, the coincidence of police men getting involved was really lame, didnt add much , the most disappointing thing was the end. If they would have added a confrontation dialogues between Vidya and SHefali that would have been great but they ended without showing anything, they let the viewers guess on their own as to what happened between them and after Vidya's video.

Nuanced bit of work
divineflame0619 March 2022
Jalsa is the story of a hit & run accident which throws a lot of people's lives haywire. It forces and tests their belief systems, morality while being a character study of sorts. What happens when people are pushed to their brink, when it's about their survival? Is morality thrown out of the window or do you fight it? The film is a nuanced portrayal of all the above.

It stars arguably the two biggest powerhouses of acting in Indian cinema, Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah. Vidya plays the role of a tough, ethical journalist while Shefali plays the role of her maid. The juxtaposition the films portrays through it's two female leads is laudable. Both are at polar ends of the societal class system, have their own set of problems and are bound by maternal roles & instincts. An unfortunate incident takes place which turns their world upside down and both are left to ride through the chaos that ensues their life. What follows is a taut thriller and a game of human emotions, psyche and morality.

The writing cleverly avoids any sort of melodrama to get its point across. While Vidya's character is more vocal and dialogue heavy (being a journalist), Shefali's gut wrenching silent portrayal of her sufferings is on another level. Suresh Triveni helms the director's hat along with Prajwal Chandrashekhar's taut writing. It translates to a slow burn screenplay giving ample time for the story to brew. The film does test your patience in some places but all the pieces and conflicts have been carefully orchestrated by the director and writers which pays off as the story gradually progresses. The support cast is also terrific especially child actor Surya who plays Vidya's disabled son. One of the biggest highlights of the show apart from the acting is the how to plot progresses and ends. Time and again and even through the trailer one might expect the film to turn into a regular run of the film cop crime thriller. But the film turns drastically away from this and there in lies it's monopoly.

With just a shade over 2 hours, Jalsa is a fascinating watch of complex human emotions, their inner conflicts and the instinctive fight for survival.

So slow that you would like to forward it every minute
rohitgupta118 March 2022
I think what misses here is the connection with any of the characters.

Vidya Balan or Shefali Shah such a seasoned actors have infact been ruined

The film is too slow to watch.

I would not recommend this film to be watched and if was in theatre it could have been much worse.

A Good Watch!
mayankshukla140419 March 2022
Jalsa is a guilt driven drama that keeps you hooked with its suspense and brilliant lead performances from Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah. The highlight of the film is its climax. The sound design is really impressive. Director Suresh Triveni's storytelling is refreshing to watch. Go for it.

The lead performances see it through! [+59%]
arungeorge1319 March 2022
An accidental crime. A cover-up. A high-profile journalist. Her maid. Their bonding is put through the ultimate test. A few co-incidences that stretch the plot. This is pretty much all there in Jalsa! But the two leading ladies - Vidya Balan & Shefali Shah - alongside Surya Kasibhatla (who plays the former's son) power their way through your hearts. While the film's central conflict makes for a nail-biting thriller, director Suresh Triveni opts for the dynamic, slow-burn approach focusing on the characters' internal breakdowns and transitions.

At first, I was reminded of the 2017 Malayalam film C/O Saira Banu (starring Manju Warrier and Shane Nigam), but the writers took it in a different direction. There's always some level of intrigue when it comes to crime and its subsequent cover-up in Indian cinema, which also works in favor of Jalsa. While the subplot with the cops doesn't add many layers (for me at least), it interestingly tells you how the film gets its name. I do feel that it would have benefited from a crisper screenplay and shorter run-time because that ending was pretty abrupt anyway.

ayaanbhojani30 March 2022
It was a great movie with a vry intense storyline. Vidya Balan does an excellent job as always she's vry talented and she does justice to her role of Maya Menon, Shefali shah also is vry impressive she hs limited dialogues but with her amazing expressions she stand's it out and also does an excellent acting, The whole supporting cast ws also good especially the kid Ayush who gives a really good support. The film'z pace ws a actually too slow bt makes u stick to ur screens because of it's intensity. I rate Jalsa a 7/10 star's.

Volatile, Nail-biting, melange of emotions
drkavitha_k18 March 2022
It's like they threw us a challenge, we've got Shah & Balan, try giving a bad review. Excellent screenplay, good editing that keeps one at the edge of the seat, wanting, yet not wanting to see what happens next. The essense of the work is Shefali Shah and Vidya Balan make us experience a complete range of emotions through their outstanding performance. Although comparatively less screentime, each character of the rest of the cast leave their mark and presence felt, the cop, reporter and most definitely special mention to Rohini Hattangadi...a definite mustwatch.

The guilty feeling
jhaashokchandra28 March 2022
This story revolves around the journalist who is like celebrity who has done a hit and run accident. Then the guilty feeling and fear of facing the victim leads her in dilemma.

Climex is good. But it should have been more clarifying. Middle of the movie is bit slow but there was hardly anything to speedup. So it was a okay movie for one time watch.

Nothing above average thriller material found.

Horrible and boring
balasandeep-1769625 March 2022
This movie should be of max 30 mins or 45 mins but they dragged it for close to 2.5 hrs because we literally can watch the whole tea preparation, unnecessary drama , reporter doing an investigation like an detective was such a joke, and I have never seen such a slow movie combined with terrible screenplay, some scenes make no sense like what was Gulati interview all about ? Only director knows Climax I don't know what he want to conclude.

Finally I finished off this movie in 4 instalments so guys please don't watch this and do something productive or you can atleast sleep for sometime.

Yes finally people who are rating 10 must be the cast and crew.

Rare UNNERVING drama having slice of life touch
roysmart-5115718 March 2022
There is no single definition of thriller..a drama like this has been edited so well that it keeps you on the edge..Vidya balan shines brightly again..audience is bound to merge with her emotions whenever her hands start trembling or she rebukes her specially abled son and later apologies.. Shefali shah performs beautifully through her eyes.

It's a must watch if u have knack of slow burn film that ends on a terrific note.

Would totally recommend.
TreeFiddy5328 March 2022
Bollywood has received a lot of flak for making trash movies or remakes over the years, so when a movie like this comes around, you've got to talk about it.

This thriller-drama is the story about a conflict between a popular journalist and her cook, with layers of corruption, and social commentary. But more than all that, you could say it's about being humane...?

Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah carried the movie, with Shefali stealing the show 53-47, IMO. *slow claps* Special mention to Surya Kasibhatla from Dallas TX, his work in this movie, and to whomever cast him - inclusivity done right. Supporting actors were great, cinematography and sound design, also added some GOOD value. That one scene in the beginning of the movie will make you flinch.

Let down - The climax was predictable, some of the events leading up don't go anywhere. But I don't think it took away much from the movie and I'd still recommend that you check this movie out.

Oversmart
Raja7918 March 2022
This movie is trying to be so pseudo-intellectual and so oversmart but it just comes off as stupid in the end.

This movie is not thriller, it is comedy.

Can we go back to the era of Tumhari Sullu instead?

A thought provoking story about moral conflicts powered by some fabulous performances from it's leading ladies.
Perspicuity13 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
WHAT'S GOOD :

1. Jalsa brings together two powerhouse actresses, who are absolutely phenomenal in the film. You can feel the tension when Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah are in the same frame, talking to each other. A well written screenplay translates into an even better film when good quality actors are used to bring it to life.

2. The movie is paced very well, at no point did I feel like stopping the film because the screenplay was very engaging.

3. I am glad Vidya Balan took up this role, because she was getting somewhat repetitive with her performances. There aren't a lot of actresses in our film industry capable of delivering a serious dialogue as convincingly as Vidya. The confidence and conviction with which she delivers her dialogues is powerful enough to shred her opponent into pieces.

There is something about Shefali Shah's eyes, that when she stares at someone, it conveys more than what even a hundred spoken words can't. Shefali Shah is fierce, she can literally make you shiver with her piercing look. In this film, Shefali had to convey more through her expressions and eyes, and she did an absolutely amazing job there. Anger, helplessness, sadness or love, Shefali was one hundred percent believable in every emotional state that she portrayed.

4. The supporting cast of this film is equally good. Rohini Hattangadi is a brilliant actress and in this film she creates an impact even with a small supporting role. Surya Kasibhatla, who plays Vidya's son in the film has cerebral palsy in real life as well, but he has given a stunning performance in the film, proving yet again that nothing can stop you from achieving your goals if you are persistent and determined to do so. Another impressive performance has been given by Vidhatri Bandi, the young journalist battling the moral dilemma of which side to take, the truth or a comfortable life.

5. The make-up and special effects in the film were of top quality. The director didn't shy away from showing the victim's disoriented face to his audience, and it looked very real.

6. The climax of the film puts you on the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing till the last moment, as to what might happen.
