It starts like a solid 3

I had to watch it because i like ants and I had an online game clan TAOK - The Alliance of Killerants.

The movie starts like a solid 3, while you wonder about the worse ratings: "Okay it's bad, but not THAT bad..." Some of the actors are somewhat okay.

After the first hour, the plot is hitting its climax and you finally understand why this movie is categorized as "horror". Because you realize: somewhere out there is someone who directed ths movie. The last 10 minutes might have caused brain cancer, something hurts.

Still 2 stars, I have seen worse.

    "I Reckon Them's Fire Ants!"...

KILLER ANTS (aka: INVICTA) opens with a young couple having their picnic ruined by the tiny, titular terrors. They also just happen to be warned about fire ants by a peculiar hillbilly.

Later, at a dinner party, the pair encounters more odd rustic types, who are having an ant problem of their own. Miraculously, a fire ant expert is on hand to talk about it.

The couple winds up at a diner, where another ant specialist happens to be dining! My God! Is there nothing else in this town, aside from ants and those who study them?

Absurd, inept, and so dull, as to cause our brains to dribble into our shoes, this movie goes out of its way to include fire ants in nearly every sentence of dialogue! There's even a crazy old lady who rants about fire ants like a religious nut!

Whether it's viewed as a seriously unfunny comedy, or as an idiot horror movie, the result is the same: the desire to self-immolate.

When the characters start -finally, blessedly!- dying, even that's unbelievably boring! Watching this is like being staked to a fire ant mound, naked, while they sting and chew!

Perhaps that's the effect the filmmakers were aiming at. If so... Bravo!...

    Acting up (down)

So my Blu Ray player is starting to act up and didn't accept most of my discs I tried to feed it. I actually wanted to watch my newest addition "Menace II Society" in the Directors Cut. I've seen the original cut and very much liked it. Now you probably can guess where this is going, but I'll still write. The one disc that did work was this curiosity which I got cheap a couple of years ago. It also had a "bonus" movie on it, which I'll rate next.

But back to this thing, which I guess you can call a movie. I mean it was filmed, there are people trying to act and I reckon for the time this was made, the CGI ants aren't half as bad. Actually they might be the best thing in this. I could swear I could see more emotion out of those digital creations than from the actual "actors".

Than again I want to point out, that you should not write people off, because of one bad experience - no pun intended. Still this is an experience you seriously do not want to make - unless you are related to one of the people involved in the making of this, better stay clear of it (and even then ... just don't tell them)

Will Leave You Crawling- To Find a Barf-Bag!

Small-town Texas is rife with genetically modified "fire ants" which are the product of- you guessed it- a Mad Scientist (Myrmecologist, to be exact) who is bent on the destruction of certain colleagues and townsfolk in order to realize his greedy purposes. A lanky English professor and his entomologist love interest (who become romantic in scenes that can only be described as 'uncomfortable') are heroes as they thwart the evil scientist's plans. The scariest things about this movie included the cast, plot, dialog, and special effects. The ant footage actually offers a welcome escape from everything else! Naturally, you'd be asking "Why, then, did you watch the WHOLE thing?" Answer: If you like to sit with a bowl of popcorn and mock really BAD movies, this will be a treat!

    • Trivia
Red imported fire ants, though they are plentiful in Texas, were not used in this movie. Instead, whenever live ants are used, Harvester ants stood in. "It's hard to procure fire ants," director Carolyn Banks explains, "but Harvester ants, which are often fed to pet lizards, are available online." She adds that Harvester ants have a powerful sting, "but unlike fire ants, they don't all sting you at the same time."
