As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

Late to the game, but still somewhat curious, Hollywood has slowly been integrating the phenomenon of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women into television storylines in recent years. Naturally, the industry has latched onto this long-unfolding tragedy in its usual way: Making Mmiw a secondary storyline within the development of a white protagonist.
I’m firmly in the “something is generally better than nothing” camp, but I would never say that shows like Big Sky, Dexter: New Blood, Alaska Daily or Three Pines were even fleetingly About Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. They namecheck a trend.
Showtime’s new docuseries Murder in Big Horn is actually about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (often extended to include “and Girls”) and, as such, it’s important. Directors Razelle Benally, an Indigenous filmmaker who identifies as Oglala Lakota/Diné, and Matthew Galkin (Showtime’s Murder in the Bayou) endeavor to give names and faces...

Foreign location shooting, mostly by Hollywood, fell in Quebec in 2022, according to the Quebec Film and Television Council as it issued its annual report on direct expenditure figures for the French speaking province’s audiovisual sector.
Statistically, Quebec posted a record 526 million in direct spending by foreign producers last year, up 12 percent in expenditures over 2021. But the Qftc said that spending line represented Hollywood projects like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and TV series like Three Pines for Amazon Prime that were produced in the province in 2021.
The expenditures only showed up on Quebec’s books in 2022 when applicable tax credits were certified by Sodec, which regulates the province’s film and TV industries. “In reality, Quebec has attracted fewer projects in 2022 and is currently facing stiff competition from many jurisdictions in Canada and abroad that are also trying to attract international film productions,” Qftc reported.

Cloaking a family drama in crime-film conventions, the plot of Native American filmmaker Erica Tremblay’s exceptional directorial debut concerns a young woman’s disappearance from an Oklahoma reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her. At the same time, Fancy Dance presents a broader narrative that emphasizes the connections that sustain families, communities and tribal nations, even when confronted with a legacy of disenfranchisement. Tremblay’s film validates the varied expressions of that experience with an affirming account of resilience and hope that sparkles with authentic performances, sensitive scripting and a genuine sense of place that resonate well after the final credits roll.
Fancy Dance finds its grounding in two standout turns from Lily Gladstone (Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon) and newcomer Isabel Deroy-Olson (Amazon Prime’s Three Pines) as two women struggling to hold out hope...

If the Quebec village of Three Pines is so beautifully idyllic, why are people being murdered there in such gruesome ways? That’s what kind and astute Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (Alfred Molina) is tasked with discovering in the eight-part series Three Pines — when he isn’t busy leading his team’s search for a missing Indigenous mom and facing long-buried demons of his own that have suddenly resurfaced. “We’ve gotten used to male detectives behaving badly, but Gamache is essentially happy, which makes the fact that he’s dealing with trauma poignant,” says Molina. “But he’s willing to grapple with it.” He must also parry with a town of eccentric suspects. Most aren’t crying over the killing of obnoxious self-help guru Cc de Poitiers (Simone-Élise Girard). “We take an edgier, darker portrayal” of Three Pines than in Louise Penny’s bestsellers, says executive producer John Phillips...

Just months after the International Olympic Committee finally restored accomplished Indigenous athlete Jim Thorpe's hard-won medals, Thorpe is set to be the subject of a new movie. Thorpe — a member of the Sac & Fox Nation where he was called Wa-Tho-Huk — is most remembered for his impressive multi-sport career. His remarkable story, however, actually began in Oklahoma Indian country in 1887, the year of his birth.
His life is chronicled in Robert Wheeler's book, "Jim Thorpe: World's Greatest Athlete," which is now set to be adapted for the big screen with a director, script, and producing team already attached. Here's everything we know about "Thorpe" so far.
When And Where To Watch Thorpe
It's still too early to tell when audiences should expect to see "Thorpe," but Deadline reports that the film is "on a fast track." The production team behind the movie already has a strong record of making...

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

Adapting a beloved book series into a television show that doesn’t lose the author’s carefully crafted nuance is a tough job. Doing so while expanding upon that world and elevating the original work is an even more challenging task.
Yet “Three Pines” does both with aplomb.
“Three Pines” is based on Louise Penny’s award-winning mystery novels, which feature an array of quirky French Canadian locals who are constantly embroiled in another whodunnit.
At the heart of these stories is Inspector Armand Gamache — a crime-solving gentleman who is to fiction-loving Canadians what Poirot or Holmes are to the Brits (and perhaps what Benoit Blanc is becoming to Americans). Casting the inspector was key, but Alfred Molina captures his gentle essence with kind eyes and an observational stillness from the moment he appears onscreen.

Sam Rockwell was apparently left stunned after Harvey Weinstein brazenly snubbed Alfred Molina in a restaurant, two years before the disgraced movie mogul was exposed as a sexual predator.
The actor was having dinner with Molina shortly after the Spider-Man 2 actor subtly criticised Weinstein, two years ahead of the New York Times exposé that led to Weinstein’s rape conviction.
In a new interview with The Independent, Molina shared his experience of working with Weinstein while starring on the 2002 Miramax-distributed film Frida, which was led by Salma Hayek as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Molina accused Weinstein of bullying Hayek, who was a co-producer on the film, and recounted one “preposterous” incident where Weinstein questioned why “she wasn’t playing ‘sexy’”.
Two years before the 2017 exposé, which featured Hayek’s allegations against Weinstein, Molina praised the actor’s abilities as a producer in public, stating: “If Salma had been white and male,...

Everyone calls Alfred Molina a character actor. And he’s very happy about that. “There was a time when ‘character actor’ meant someone who wasn’t quite good enough to be a leading man,” the celebrated actor and owner of Hollywood’s best eyebrows tells me, leaning forward, “and I think that’s bollocks.”
The reason for such emphasis on that word? A memory, perhaps, of a pep talk he was given in his final year of drama school. Back then, the Spider-Man star was still Alfredo, later advised to drop the “o” to anglicise his name. (He’s the London-born son of a Spanish father and Italian mother.) Molina starts to summon the patronising Rp of his tutor, creasing up as he does so. “He said, ‘Alfredo. I think you have to come to terms with the fact that you really won’t work until you’re well into your forties.
