Violence & Gore

  • A man is hit once in the head with a large wrench and injured. We see blood flowing from a wound.
  • Several men attack another man with a knife and stab him in the hand. We see a bloody wound.
  • A man walks barefoot on broken glass. His feet bleed heavily and we see bloody wounds.
  • A man is hit hard on the back with a rifle-butt.
  • A man attacks another young man; he punches and chokes the man, but is pulled off by two other men and hit in the head. We see a bloody gash.
  • A man is tied up with his arms above his head. Bloody marks are later seen around his wrists when the ropes are removed.
  • At several points in the movie, a man is briefly beaten by four other men. In one scene, he is hit in the stomach and a gun is held to his throat.

Profanity

  • "Shit" is said at least once and appears twice in subtitles.
  • 2 uses of God Damn & 1 use of Jesus Christ.
  • In the pirates dialogue, you can hear the F word a couple times, but easy to miss.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Elmi drinks from a jug. It's assumed to be a type of alcohol. Pirates light and smoke cigarettes. They are also seen chewing khat leaves.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • At several points it seems like the Somalis are going to kill Phillips.
  • The entire movie is very intense after the first 20 minutes or so. The main character is under constant threat, as are dozens of other supporting characters.
  • Pirates fire machine guns at several people at different points in the movie.
  • The final 30 minutes of the movie are incredibly intense and features some fairly strong violence. The ending may also be emotionally intense for some people.

  • Tom hanks is seen shirtless.

Violence & Gore

  • Three men are shot in the head offscreen. We see a large amount of blood fly onto walls and also a large amount onto a fourth man who yells and panics.
  • Captain Phillips is covered in blood during the medical attention and explains that not all of it is his.
