Eurgh...bad movie.
l-tavendale20 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Stomp The Yard was a great standalone film, and never really needed a sequel. Sometimes sequels work, sometimes they don't. Unfortunately, STY2: Homecoming is the latter.

STY2 was made on the cheap and it's really obvious. The characters are lacklustre, the acting is awful, the visual quality is poor and everything just seems very unfinished. It's not polished, slick or funny like the original. It's dark, jerky and hard to follow. If you are a huge fan of the original, i'd recommend watching it purely for Columbus Short's monologue later in the movie. He's the only saving grace in this car crash, and the sole reason for a 3 star review.

This movie is cheap, nasty and super disappointing. Give it a miss and watch the original instead.

Watch when bored, maybe not, you might fall to sleep.

Warning: Spoilers
Let's start with the choreography. Terrible, the main character seems to put so much effort into facial expressions and hand gestures that he forgot that he was suppose to be dancing/stepping. The entire cast had a hard time keeping up with the original cast, which made me continue to want to turn off the movie.

Seeing how I wanted to give the film a chance, it just didn't work. Sometimes, films should just say with the original and leave sequels for better script writing.

I guess adding a cameo in the film was suppose to make the film better, but their 5 minute appearance did not help anything.

If you want to pass an hour ½ give it a go, but don't expect anything as good as the first.

its OK to watch on your laptop
niidalai5 January 2011
Well all i can say is that this movie is OK to watch but after watching to the end then you would realise that it was a bit weak....the plot was OK...the acting was OK...a bit exaggerated at certain parts. It was very very predictable though....but trust me it is way better than the back up plan...with J'lo......(i would say that movie was the worst for 2010) Stomp the yard 2 in my opinion was done in a rush. I mean i think the makers of this movie weren't too keen on out doing the 1st one but just wanted to do a dance movie in a hurry and reap of unsuspecting movie goers like you and i. So I am sure their plan was that by the time you would realise that the movie sucked ass, you would have already paid to be in the cinema hall. It is worth watching on your laptop, after all if you got it for free from a pal who downloaded it then its worth watching. At least it is a great a opportunity to use it to kill 1.20hrs of time if don't have anything to do or if u don't have anywhere to go. Other wise i recommend Scott Pilgrim vs the world

i give it 3 stars

HATED the movie. Didn't finish.
NatPatBen26 September 2010
I loved the original Stomp the Yard, even though I disagreed with a few things in it.

I hated this movie so much that I walked out of it (even if walking out only meant leaving the living room) partway through.

WHY take a movie about stepping and turn it into a movie about senseless violence??? Plus, this movie doesn't have the eye-candy characters as did the first one.

The movie should have been light-hearted and shown more STEPPING. I'm super frustrated that so many movies about one thing just HAVE to throw in a bunch of violence.

On top of that, the main character does not draw you in. I do not feel any sympathy for him at all, as he his predicaments are all due to his own actions and choices.

The best thing about the movie was seeing tWitch, as I am a huge So You Think You Can Dance fan.

Stomp any thoughts of watching this movie
raptor008914 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
On the merits of the original Stomp the Yard movie alone I decided to watch this movie with my wife. We both enjoyed Columbus Short, Chris Brown, Meagan Good, and the rest of the great cast, along with the nicely choreographed and impressively skilled stepping. The cinematography - as far as dance movies of this type goes - was professional looking as well. (How Columbus Short's character, DJ Williams, could have been tagged with the murder of Chris Brown's character is a MAJOR hole in the movie, but that's another story.)

So onto the sequel: it starts out promising enough, with a "battle" in the street. One dancer is clearly superior to anyone else there - but guess what - he's not the main character! (In fact, I don't recall seeing him again after that scene.) We see the movie's main character, Chance, played by Collins Pennie, do his best stuff. He has one trick move (a flip of some kind), and the rest of his repertoire is nothing impressive - not even by local dance club standards! Already, we're off to a bad start.

Next, we're introduced to Chance's environment at work and school. A love triangle is portrayed between his current love interest (girlfriend??) and an old flame (who manages to throw herself at Chance while keeping it a secret from her current boyfriend). This sub-plot doesn't add anything to the movie, due to the shallow depth of the character development and the unoriginal and typical course of events. Some family tension with his uncle, played by Keith David (the ONLY recognizable actor in the movie, other than Columbus Short), accounts for another ho-hum and unoriginal sub-plot.

A few words on Chance as the main character should be offered. Unlike the original movie, in which DJ played a highly talented, considerate, and likable person who had integrity and showed he could learn from his selfish behavior from the past, Chance is neither talented nor likable. All of his problems are brought upon himself due to his own self-focus. This is a big detriment to movie, having an unlikeable main character.

Due to some unscrupulous characters from the opening scene that have put Chance in a compromising situation, Chance is faced with a dilemma about whether or not he should dance in the final competition. In the midst of this situation, DJ Williams (Columbus Short) has a cameo appearance, in which he talks for maybe a minute or two. His performance is a much-needed breath of fresh air for this film, which has been drowning for a while. DJ gives another short speech before the final competition - likewise gratifying to watch. Sorry, sports fans, you don't get to see DJ dance in this film - he's just there as an alumnus for moral support. (By the way, I half-way expected to see a wedding ring on DJ's finger, as an allusion to his relationship with his girlfriend April (Meagan Good) from the first movie. However,no such luck.)

I could tell you how it ends, but suffice it to say that the ending is just as shallow and blah as most of the film. Other than the two cameos by DJ, this movie has nothing worthwhile to offer, and it can't end soon enough. Keith David (Chance's uncle) is a fine actor, but this script did not give him sufficient latitude to flex his acting muscle like I've seen in other films. Should a sequel to this movie ever come out, I'll definitely read some reviews before deciding to watch it.

It was garbage.
ronwillis-0004525 September 2018
The Script was terrible; But, i could tolerate it. On the other hand the Choreography was the worst. Carlton Banks can dance better than the lead character. Just horrible. If you want to watch ANY stomp the yard, just keep the original on repeat.

This Could Have Been So Much Better
oeth0428 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Like most who purchased this movie or watched it...it was due to me being a huge fan of the first Stomp The Yard. To say I was let down is somewhat of an understatement. First of all the second movie starts off the same as the first...dance competition followed by needless violence. That's where the similarities end. First of all…Collins Pennie (Chance in the movie) is not as talented of a dancer as Columbus Short (DJ in the first movie). That much is evident from the opening dance scene. My opinion of him is pretty much justified throughout the entire movie.

Then there is the time-line problem. Stomp The Yard was released in 2007 and Stomp The Yard 2 was released in 2010. Columbus Short's character DJ should still be enrolled in Truth as a returning Senior. If he graduated early which is possible, it's hard to believe that the Thetas have endured another losing streak to the Mu Gammas which is clearly the case, as direction of this movie would have you believe. This could have easily been fixed had the film makers offered up more money for Columbus to actually star in this movie instead of making brief cameos.

Imagine this…Chance comes to Truth needing direction and DJ mentors him having experienced similar issues during his initial semester at college. Also imagine DJ instructing Chance that he has to be open to improving himself…in life as well as Stepping. Imagine then, the dance finale of seeing Chance and DJ stepping on the same stage. Imagine DJ turning Theta Nu Theta over to Chance as he prepares for graduation. Also it would have been nice to see Megan Good make a cameo as DJ's fiancée. Now a plot including these bits and pieces would have made for a much better movie. That's just my opinion though. Before I forget…did I mention that both fraternities had better steppers in 2007 than 2010, laugh out loud.

Abomination of Filming
TheOfficialCritic22 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was not what I expected, it's full of inglorious acting and dancing... but most importantly, where is "Columbus Short" and the few great actors from the last film? I don't understand what's going on, but is it even lawful for them to even put "Columbus Short" on IMDb as an actor if he isn't acting in the movie? OMG!! This 2nd version is trash and I noticed that there is a new director "Rob Hardy" and a new writer "Albert Leon" and both of these gentlemen need to give up writing and filming altogether, because its as if they created a replica of the first Stomp Yard as a spoof (a joke) and please forward this message to that new inexperienced lead actor to find a job at Dennys and stay there... forever. OMG!!

It could be better...
ilinden208 August 2010
I can't believe that I am the first one here to review this tittle.Fist of all I expected much more from this movie.First part was really great but this one is boring.Plot is melodramatic and clichéd,story is very predictable. But this is a dance movie and these things are not so important for this type of movie...what is really important is dancing and dancing here is lame, uninteresting. You won't see some crazy moves,if you want to see something like that then watch Step Up 3D.Acting here is average, whole atmosphere in this movie is really dark ,there isn't any fun.And what to say about soundtrack ...It has some really cool songs but this movie needs more than few cool songs.I am little disappointed but if you liked Stomp the Yard then Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming is not as bad as rating says.Just watch it...

Wayyyyy Below my Expectations
Gradu80721 August 2010
OK... First hearing about the sequel I was pretty much excited being that I enjoyed the first one especially the cast. But boy was I let down. The dancing and the stepping was horrible; it feels like they didn't even try to surpass the moves they did in the first film; if anything it fell way too short. The cast on the other hand; mixed reviews on that one (some could act and some couldn't). The storyline was pretty much generic and boring. The movie is 1hr and 27mins but at some points felt longer due to its slow pace and not being as entertaining. However I gave the movie 5/10 because although it didn't meet my expectations I would not say its the worse movie every made besides I added an extra star because the scenes Columbus Short was in put a smile on my face (THETA WHAT?).

*Don't be discouraged by my review; its all subjective. You just may like it; it just did not exceed my expectations.

Tyler Perry hostile take over hahahahaha
arnoldtshepobogatsu20 March 2018
Compared to the first one, this is too whack for any viewing. Looked like Tyler Perry hijacked the production. Sorry for being honest but they should have done a better job.

Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming

All ethnicities enjoy dance in their own way. Latin Americans like to tango, Indians like to Bhangra, while Caucasians like to watch dance themed television shows.

As for African Americans, according to this sequel, they like to dance in-between their university classes.

When new Theta Nus pledge Chance (Collins Pennie) is pegged as the top stepper in his fraternity's crew, the pressure is on him to win the upcoming national step-off competition.

Making matters worse is the fact that his father (Keith David) and the leader of a rival dance crew (Twitch) are both hoping that Chance chokes.

A left footed attempt at establishing a dance franchise, Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming lacks the script, the stars, and the choreography needed to exceed the original Stomp the Yard.

Besides, due to the increase in campus violence, it's hard to tell if students in the quad are dancing or dodging bullets. (Red Light)

Can we rate movies here lower than a 1?
ecgxsynt12 December 2022
My god 16:44 in and I'm wondering why...why am I watching this? I'm bored and nothing else is on and this is on HBO Max? What the heck.....

How do movies like this even get made ? It's like a poor man's BET Special .

Joke of a movie. Stay Away!

The dialogue is just horrible . The way it's shot is trash . The dancing ... I've seen better dancing at dive bars at 3am. I really just do not get Hollywood at times also who the heck casted these people ? When you have a bad movie with bad scripting you would expect ok maybe the actors are gonna be good. Here... nope! Maybe just stick with the first one .

Lets be honest
sallen20084 May 2013
If you are watching this because you like the plot and acting of the first one then skip it. This time you need to be watching it for the dancing and nothing else. If you want a great plot and some amazing acting don't bother.

I actually enjoyed this movie because I wasn't expecting much. All I wanted to see was dancing and it was pretty good. I've been dancing since I was 2 and appreciate any form. You will see Twitch in the movie as a main character (He's not half bad) but will admire his movement. Twitch is from 'So You Think You Can Dance' and so much more…just an FYI.

Overall if you appreciate dancing watch this film. Besides the acting you will be entertained. It's like watching the preceding Step Ups and expecting anything else but good dancing.
