Dennis Hopper was the Oscar-nominated performer who experienced many ups-and-downs throughout his career, with his off-screen antics often overshadowing his onscreen talent. Yet many of his movies have stood the test of time. Let’s take a look back at 15 of Hopper’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1936, Hopper made his movie debut at the age of 19 in “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955), where he became fast friends with James Dean. He had an even bigger role in “Giant” (1956), which would be Dean’s last film before his untimely death in 1955. Hopper struggled for several years trying to find his voice, making small appearances in such films as “Cool Hand Luke” (1967) and “True Grit”(1969).
He burst onto the scene with the counterculture phenomenon “Easy Rider” (1969), which he also directed and co-wrote (with co-star Peter Fonda and Terry Southern). The story of two bikers (Hopper and Fonda) traveling across...

His playing on instruments including the Minimoog, Clavinet, Mellotron, and piano became a signature of the band’s sound as heard on albums including 1977’s Out of the Blue. He also contributed backing vocals and worked hand-in-hand with Lynne on various song arrangements.

In 1991, when Debbie Gibson’s underrated third album, Anything Is Possible, stalled at #41 on the charts, the New York Times printed a full-page obituary for her relatively brief career titled “The Perils and Perishability of a Teen Idol.” In just a few short years, Gibson had gone from America’s sweetheart—anointed the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 hit—to being declared a pop casualty by the nation’s newspaper of record.
Only two years earlier, the Long Island teen had scored her biggest hit, “Lost in Your Eyes,” the lead single from her sophomore effort, Electric Youth. The album is arguably the weakest of Gibson’s four Atlantic releases, largely eschewing the sleek dance-pop and of-the-moment freestyle and hi-Nrg stylings of 1987’s Out of the Blue in favor of ostensibly more mature piano ballads and Motown-lite, which zapped her music of the exuberance that made her debut so charming.

Inside a warehouse in an undisclosed location in Los Angeles’ South Bay, a shipment of clothes belonging to Chloë Sevigny recently arrived. They are being photographed, cataloged with barcodes and properly boxed and hung by The Wardrobe, a New York storage and preservation company that recently opened its first archive in the L.A. area.
“I’d just been holding onto everything for so long now and not storing things properly, from my first communion dress to my Oscar dress [a Ysl in 2000 for Boys Don’t Cry] and my Golden Globes dresses,” says Sevigny. “I have almost everything.”
Sevigny connected with The Wardrobe founder Julie Ann Clauss over Instagram. The two met up at the actress’ storage unit in Connecticut and began sorting through her trove of clothes. Legendary characters don’t die. They keep getting reinvented. If they exist in fiction, new authors come along to create new adventures for them. And if they exist onscreen, you can bet that a remake or reboot will come along every generation or so in hopes of recatching that lightning in a bottle.
And often both happens, as is the case with Philip Marlowe, the iconic hard-boiled detective invented by Raymond Chandler and portrayed onscreen over the decades by actors including Dick Powell, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Montgomery, James Garner, Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and probably others I’ve forgotten.
The latest tough guy actor to don the fedora is Liam Neeson, in director Neil Jordan’s new film based on a 2014 novel by John Banville, writing under the name Benjamin Black. Suffice it to say that the results won’t erase anyone’s memories of The Big Sleep or The Long Goodbye.

Actor Ray Nicholson has been staying extremely busy, with multiple projects on the release horizon, including the buzzy comedic thriller “Borderline,” from writer/director Jimmy Warden, which is being shopped at AFM by Radiant Films, in conjunction with CAA. Nicholson stars as a helplessly romantic sociopath that escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar, played by Samara Weaving (“Ready or Not”). Nicholson spoke with Variety about the project and his burgeoning career.
What can you say about “Borderline”?
When I read the script, I said to myself — what a cute love story! I loved it immediately, and I was fortunate enough to meet with Jimmy Warden, and we hit it off and nerded-out over movies, and from that point he really trusted me.

Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey" -- arguably one of the best films of all time -- is so expansive and far-reaching in its story and tone that a casual viewer might miss that astronaut Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) is the protagonist. Indeed, Dave doesn't even appear until about halfway through the film, and that's after an early extended sequence set during prehistoric times among a group of proto-human hominids, and then a very long sci-fi sequence wherein characters other than Dave discover a mysterious monolith buried on the surface of the moon.
Dave, however, does get the lion's share of the film's screentime. Dave also has the more "exciting" scenes, like matching wits with the malfunctioning computer intelligence Hal 9000 (Douglas Rain). Dave will also be the recipient of an effable form of evolutionary awareness, allowed to first see space travel as the logical next step in human evolution.

About “Good Morning Football”
“Good Morning Football” is a live coverage morning program from the NFL Network, originally airing on August 1st, 2016. After little success with the “NFL HQ” and “NFL Am” morning show, the NFL Network created “Good Morning Football” to give sports fans a way to catch up on game highlights, recaps, and football news without watching the Sunday night games live.

Early on in Neil Labute’s “Out of the Blue,” a pair of James M. Cain novels get checked out by Diane Kruger’s cool, composed seductress at an elegant old library.
Unfortunately, the writer-director’s bid to evoke the murderous lust of hard-boiled staples “The Postman Always Rings Twice” and “Double Indemnity” is itself plenty checked out, a zipless exercise about as noirish as a commercial for household cleaning products.
Few careers are as mystifying in their longevity as Labute’s, whose empty misanthropy and gotcha dramatics across theater and movies were once the epitome of soured-soul indie cachet. His film career of late — whether directing his own screenplays or for-hire gigs — has been divorced from any meaningful expectations or promise or acclaim, but it’s still trudging along. “Out of the Blue,” which only ever feels tossed off, conjures the same head-scratching about its existence: If an adulterous...

A new cinematic drinking game has arrived. It’s a doozy, too, when taking a shot every time writer-director Neil Labute uses an intertitle demarking time in Out of the Blue means you’ll probably pass out before Connor’s (Ray Nicholson) inevitable plan to kill Marilyn’s (Diane Kruger) abusive husband is floated, let alone put in motion. Many are arbitrary. Some are exacting. Few have narrative relevance beyond telling us something we already know. I’m thus unsure what the point of using so many is, beyond earning an incredulous laugh—some bookend thirty seconds of footage that provide nothing of consequence anyway. If a character mentions that an event will occur on Tuesday, we don’t need to see “Tuesday” before transitioning to said event. It’s implicit.
My guess is that Labute merely hopes to elicit mood. Film noir plays in the background of many scenes and Marilyn,...

Exclusive: Andrew Dice Clay (Pam & Tommy) and Jordan Johnson-Hinds (The Endgame) will star in the Quiver-acquired basketball drama Warrior Strong from director Shane Belcourt (Red Rover), which has entered production in Northern Ontario, Canada.
The film written by Dan Gordon (Wyatt Earp) centers on basketball protege and egocentric Bilal Irving (Johnson-Hinds), who is asked to be the assistant coach of his former high school team, the Dumont Warriors, alongside Coach Avery Schmidt (Clay). Bilal subsequently learns that true coaching involves far more than simply teaching the game. The question is, will this rag-tag team of misfits have what it takes to put aside their differences and become Warrior Strong?
Nicholas Tabarrok and Leah Jaunzems are producing for Darius Films, with Quiver’s Berry Meyerowitz, Jeff Sackman and Larry Greenberg serving as exec producers. Quiver holds worldwide rights to the film and will be introducing it for sale at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.

What kind of friend are you? We all fall into certain friendship archetypes, whether we’re the responsible “parent” of the group, the instigator, or the one that never responds in the group chat. Sometimes we fill these archetype roles to bring out the best in our friend groups, but more often than not these roles are set in stone during our youth, before we define ourselves, and coalesce into something toxic and decidedly unfriendly.
Taking a psychological approach to exploring lifelong friendships, digital communication, and Gen-z individualism, A24‘s SXSW breakout horror film Bodies Bodies Bodies is sure to stir up a conversation online. However, a lot of that conversation will rightly be about the outstanding, believable performances from the film’s young, buzzy cast. No one needs an explanation for who Bodies Bodies Bodies stars Pete Davidson and Lee Pace are in 2022, but some of the film’s...
