- Jasmeet "Jass" Bhamra (Kareena Kapoor Khan), a British-Indian detective, is grieving the death of her child, who was killed by a drug-addicted shooter. Her son was shot down in a bowling arcade. Later in court, the drug addict claims that he was mentally unstable but was found guilty on all charges. As he is taken to prison, Jass come right at the addict and punches him to the face. Jass still holds on to the bloodied clothes of her son from the day he was murdered.
She takes a transfer to Buckinghamshire, where she is assigned the case of a missing Indian child, Ishpreet, by Miller (Keith Allen). Hr colleagues at the station include DS Sharon Mark (Adwoa Akoto), DC Cowden (Jonathan Nyati), Harleen (Rukku Nahar) and others. Jass tells Miller that she does not want to be a part of the case, but Miller insists that Jass should do her job. 65,873 kids go missing each year and 70% of them are never found or are found dead. The best chance to find the kid is in the first 12 hours.
With her superior, DI Hardik "Hardy" Patel (Ash Tandon), she interviews Ishpreet's parents, Daljeet (Ranveer Brar) and Preeti Kohli (Prabhleen Sandhu), and she learns the boy was adopted. Jass also discovers that Patel has history with the family, particularly with their relatives Tejinder Singh & Prithvi. Tejinder/Syringe is a former drug dealer.
Daljeet says that Ishpreet went to school at 7:30 AM, and usually returns by 2 PM (school ends at 1:30 PM). They informed the police when he did not return by 4 PM. Preeti says that a few days ago Tejinder had slapped Ishpreet, and this had upset him. Daljeet was not happy when Preeti spoke or shared anything with Jass. Tejinder claims that he had caught Ishpreet smoking.
The police make inquires at school, and the bus driver Shafiq confirms that Ishpreet got on the bus that afternoon.
Via CCTV footage, the police locate Ishpreet's last-known location at a park, where they begin an overnight search. At dawn, Patel tells his tired team to go home and ventures into the park with his subordinate, Simon (Darren Kemp). They discover Ishpreet's dead body in an abandoned car. Autopsy reveals that Ishpreet was killed by forced drowning.
The family is devastated. Jass tells them that the body of Ishpreet is primary evidence and hence will not be released till the case is closed. Jass learns that Ishpreet was adopted in Punjab and brought to Birmingham. He was sad and forlorn. He was only attached to Daljeet's mother, who passed away during Corona. Ishpreet was afraid that if his parents died, he would be an orphan again.
The police trace the car to a Muslim man Saleem, whose nephew, Saquib (Kapil Redekar), is seen borrowing the car on the day of the murder. He is revealed to be a drug-addict, and also has history with Patel. Saquib's DNA was all over the car and CCTV had him driving the car into car park near the Park. Saquib claims that he left the car at the park as he lost the keys.
Daljeet tells Jass that Saleem and he used to run a transport company together. But Saleem broke the partnership and took all the clients with him. Daljeet and Saleem had a huge fight, and things got physical. Daljeet believes Saquib had taken revenge on behalf of Saleem.
On further investigation, they find that Saquib was with the local Imam's (Haqi Ali) son, Naved (Rahul Sidhu), on that day. During his interview, Naved reveals that Saquib killed Ishpreet (who was delivering cocaine to them) in a fit of rage. Saquib was 30 pounds short, and Ishpreet would not leave until he was paid in full. Saquib got really angry and wrestled Ishpreet into the water and drowned him. Naved claims that Saquib lost the key to the car and hence they could not drive it away, but that did not explain how they could open the car to put the body inside it. Saquib is arrested, but Jass is unconvinced (Ishpreet's bag is missing, and he was dealing drugs). She tries to reason with Patel and Miller, but when Patel taunts her for losing her son, she punches him. Miller puts her off the case.
Jass, now given a desk job, is still quietly investigating the murder. She discovers that Patel has a sister who is in a coma due to drugs supplied to her by Saquib. Jass finds that Tejinder was the man who supplied the drugs that put Patel's sister in a coma. Tejinder claims that he was ratted out by his man, spent time in jail and was reformed when he saw what happened to Patel's sister. Tejinder says that he never used Ishpreet to supply drugs. Saquib had ratted Tejinder out, and due to this he was sent to rehab. Patel had a bone to pick with Saquib. Jass approaches Miller and says that Patel has a conflict of interest and hence the case has to be reopened.
She visits Saquib in prison, pleading with him to tell her the truth. He reveals that he did indeed get into an altercation with Ishpreet, but did not kill him and sent him away. He also says that Naved and him are lovers. After spending time in the lake, they found Ishpreet's dead body in the lake. They fished it out and wanted to take it to the hospital, but Saquib lost his car keys. So, they left the body and ran away.
Jass pleads with a closeted Naved, saying that his testimony will lead to life imprisonment for Saquib. Disturbed, Naved says that he struck a deal with Patel, who said that Saquib would be released in a couple of years if he lied about the murder. Jass uses this information to reveal Patel's truth to Miller and he is caught trying to threaten Naved, but Patel shoots and kills himself instead. Simon reveals that Patel had found Ishpreet's body in the park, when he sent the team home. He then asked Simon to put Ishpreet's body in Saquib's car, which was at the car park. Simon says that Ishpreet did not have his bag on him when he was found.
Saquib is released from prison. Jass focuses on Daljeet as the new prime suspect. His transportation business is not doing well, and he is broke, and had taken out a large life insurance (200,000 pounds) on Ishpreet's name 4 years ago. They find that he is having an affair with a woman, Indrani (Sarah-Jane Dias), and that he is physically abusive towards Preeti. Indrani was Ishpreet's piano teacher. Meanwhile, Daljeet's relative Prithvi (Manish Gandhi) is seen making sexual advances on Preeti. Daljeet witnesses this, and in a fit of rage, murders him.
When arrested, Daljeet vehemently denies killing his adoptive son. Indrani tells Jass that she and Daljeet are part of a support group who lost their loved ones to Covid. Jass finds traces of 2nd DNA on Saquib's car and it matches with Prithvi.
On searching Prithvi's house, police discover Ishpreet's missing backpack among his belongings and a burner phone with which he was dealing drugs. They trace a call made on it to Preeti, who is revealed to be the mastermind all along to escape from her abusive marriage. Preeti is arrested and admits that she never wanted to adopt a child, and this was Daljeet and his mother's idea. Preeti knew that Daljeet worshiped Ishpreet. Prithvi stayed with them when Tejinder was in jail for 4 years, and Preeti took care of him.
She had seduced Prithvi and manipulated him into killing Ishpreet (Prithvi drowned Ishpreet in the lake), and also orchestrated the event where Daljeet would murder Prithvi. Having closed the case, a traumatized Jass tries to get closure on her own son's death.
