This show is a breath of fresh air, filled to the brim with treasured Aussie actors and actresses. I really enjoyed Brian Brown and Greta Scachi's chemistry. It is an easy and entertaining watch, with stunning scenery. Highly recommend.

I happened upon this show on my Acorn subscription. I wasn't expecting anything, because I had never heard of any of the actors, however, it caught my interest and I have been enjoying it very much. I think the key is that it is an easy show to watch. There is the main mystery unravelling around Joan's husband which is an ongoing plot point. And then there are small mysteries in each episode that get concluded by the end of the episode while simultaneously revealing more information about Joan's husband. The writing is good. The characters, although sometimes unusual, seem real and interesting. The drama doesn't become annoying by watching the characters self sabotage themselves at every turn like most of the soap opera'ish series I've seen. The scenery is awesome, although some of the dangerous species in Australia are concerning. ;-).
Anyone looking for the extreme detail and meticulous clue gathering of a CSI show will be disappointed. Most of the plots are rather simple and solved with minimal sleuthing, but that is part of the shows charm. Even the dangerous encounters won't get you too far onto edge of your seat as the criminals give up the goods rather easily, so the show is light hearted in that regard.
Anyway, I'm enjoying it and would like to see another few seasons.

Brian Brown always the gentleman was great I enjoyed his character from beginning to end, can't wait till next season. Big surprise was the LACK OF profanity, sex & nudity considering its Aussie made. Well done writers, actors , producers& team👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼I think there were a couple "S" maybe "Bloo.." in FaceTime chats with Joan's (Greta Scacchi) gay daughter & her wife.. however the story was so good kept me guessing most way through. I do enjoy a good mystery. And ohhh the countryside is exquisite it will draw holiday makers to north east Queensland for sure💓 Darby & Joan is the most enjoyable show I've been able to watch in years, as most are just to much to see & hear for me anyway.... WELL DONE 👍

Not blood, gore and sex ... but GREAT chemistry. Absolutely LOVE the interaction between Greta & Bryan. Beautiful and handsome - NOT the fake beauty on American TV. We love it. Each show is good and builds towards the conclusion but also, THANKFULLY, toward another season. Takes advantage of the scenery and culture of Australia and Queensland. Interesting supporting characters in each episode. PLEASE keep the seasons coming. I can see these two characters together for many seasons and it would not be boring watching the relationship grow. LOVE LOVE LOVE Bryan Brown and the REAL mature Greta Scacchi! THANK YOU.

Just what we need after the graphic sex and violence over-excess of 'Outlander' and 'Game of Dragons" A gentle romantic comedy with two late middle aged retirees trekking through rural Australia solving simple ethically ambiguous crimes as they go, with gently bickering witty repartee. Darby and Joan being the perfect title. Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi show that over 60's have still got it and make a very attractive couple without resorting to full frontal nudity and waggling bare bottoms. The two of them are so perfectly matched one would think they had 'been together now for 40 years and it don't seem a day too much'. OK, the plots are simple, but if we need violent crime all we have to do is read tody's papers. I loved the line "My sister was married to Darby a few wives back!"

This show is set in the cinematically gorgeous Australia. It has the feel of a Cotswold set village mystery show. Joan and Darby starts with an out of water English woman piecing together The W's of her husband's death thousands of miles from where he was supposed to be. Of course through a timely by chance situation/encounter she connects with a retired detective who had gone "walk about" for several reasons I won't spoil.
Set in an RV instead of some cottage we get a love letter to the beauty of the Aussie landscape. Nothing is major or truly sinister about the mysteries. They're episodic adventures as we are taken along the journey with Joan and Darby as they piece together her husband's hidden story.
This isn't an edgy show but it does touch on a few subjects especially grief, forgiveness and making amends. There are many familiar faces of great Aussie actors to be found in this season and I hope to see more in a season 2. There are some acting misses in the supporting cast but I don't believe it was designed to sweep up awards.
I would like to commend the show for not being artificially woke. It is naturally inclusive and contemporary without detracting from the story telling. It represents people as people in a manner of fact way with no explanations necessary(as it should be) unless relevant to the story.
Australia is vast country with so much more to explore. This first season only scratched the surface of the culture and country. Hopefully we get more seasons and we get to explore everything from Sydney to Perth and First Peoples to Bogans.

When one is bombarded with who dun it's, one becomes accustomed to a level of dramatisation. We expect we know how it starts, what the middle will be, and come to the inevitable conclusion. How wrong the viewer becomes watching this mini series.
To say how good this series is, would entail the length of time to watch it. How Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi were matched, I've no idea yet, without either or both, this series could've fallen flat on it's face. They played off each other with agusto.
The concept is a tour de force, a complete change from the ordinary, and a feast for the eyes and the ears. And the best part is, the villian turns out to be the hero. Go Figure, in modern parlance.
I really hope the last scene of the last episode teases Part II. She looking out for him after him looking out for her. Somehow I don't think there will be a car crash at the beginning of Series 2 however, you never know. The pace of this series is amazing - there's plenty of intrigue to keep you watching but the beautiful scenery calms things down again. I prefer mysteries like this ie without (much) death but there aren't many around - the main other being 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered' (AKA kLost Letter Mysteries'). My only gripe with D&J is that for much of the season, there's a 'straight marriage is crap but gay marriage's always perfect' vibe, which is obv v unrealistic. I hope they go ahead with S2 as set up in the S1 finale - TV needs more cross-generational shows, especially where the older characters take the lead.

Perfectly charming, easy watch, set in Queensland, Australia as the odd couple travel around in their Camper Van (Grey Nomads R Us) with British Joan (the nurse cum forensic pathologist) and Ozzie Jack (the retired detective). Joan's seeking closure after the death of her slightly dubious husband, while Jack definitely has some skeletons in the closet surrounding his depart from the Australian Police service.
Beautiful scenery, simple stories (no surprises), not so much as a 'mild peril'. 40 mins of the kind of gentle detective story we're coming to love from this platform.
Greta Scacchi and Bryan Brown are the unlikely pair who are *definitely* not in a relationship, but manage to have enough chemistry and tension to keep the viewer interested while they solve today's mystery and explore the back stories.
Right up there with Father Brown and Rosemary and Thyme.
Very much hoping for a second season.

I think the show needs to be maybe 10 minutes longer to get those transitions between scenes working better. They jump to the solution without any warning. Part of the fun of a mystery is watching them solve it.
They main characters are good together and it is great to see Bryan Brown in a series. Some of the episodes are better than others and the underlying mystery of Joan's husband is interesting. What I don't understand is how they get to Darby'a daughter's police station so quickly whenever they need to. But that is where you have to suspend your belief while watching tv. And sometimes they get to a place they were at in a previous episode lots quicker than is logical for such a big country.

This show doesn't take it's self too, serious which makes it a delight to watch. There is no wokeness in your face, no political statements, either just two average relatable people on a mission. Joan looks like your average middle age female with Darby portrayed as a kind older male. Joan comes to Australia to find answers to her husbands death when he was supposed to be in Spain. Darby is an ex policeman who was forced to retire, and the two literally collide and decide to work together to find the answers of Joan's husband's death. As the two travel around the country they have some great adventures. The scenery is beautiful. It's nice to see a series with older actors having a good time. No darkness and gruesome deaths just light mysteries. Kind of reminds me of "Murder She Wrote" with the same presentation of the crimes. I've watched 4 episodes and am enjoying it.

The two leads are VERY likable. I admit I finished the first season in two days mostly because I liked their characters.
I love the Australian backdrop. They filmed in some truly beautiful locations.
And I love some of the Easter eggs included. For example the scene with Jack in the bar had me laughing.
My main problem is the script. It's rather cheesy. There is unnecessary dialog in every single episode. As if they are either adding filler or treating the audience as if we are all dense. This makes the show slow and somewhat boring. And I could do without any of the action scenes. They are silly and blatantly choreographed.

Weak writing. Soap opera characters. Silly plot and sub-plots. Cute in a somewhat boring and mindless way. Still not sure why they started where they did or ended up where they did either. Storylines seemed to bounce around all over the place. With the amazing scenery we began to wonder if it wasn't produced by the Australian Tourism Board. Sorry but this one just missed the mark by a few rings. And it sure looks like it is warming up for a season two. Maybe they will up their game a little. Maybe they tried a little too hard to do a little too much? If it wasn't for the answer to the big mystery we would have given up after episode one.

It is so nice not to be hearing the F_word all the time nor Christ and God as expletives. Nice that they can have a relationship not based on sex.
It is also nice to have the leads be older and wiser. Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi seem to have a personal depth of character themselves that is not always found in actors and actresses even if they are older.
Episode 6th. Hmm, could it be possible that the other "voice" in the taped conversation is the really killer and Joan is able to clear her husband's name; that he isn't the murderer.
Hope there is more than 1 season but hope the mystery of Ian is solved by the end of Season 1; however, maybe that will make it only a 1 season series.
It is so nice the show isn't caught up in all the "social issues" pushing and agenda and every show doesn't have to have a dead body to solve the murder.

Greta Scacci, she's British. Bryan Brown, he's Australian and a retired cop. They run into each other in the back country and team up to solve crimes. These fine actors make this an endearing drama. Other veteran actors like Damien Garvey, Anna Graham, John Waters, Jolene Anderson, Heather Mitchell make up a pretty Terrific cast. They break up theft rings, drug runners, all while traveling through Australia. The dog named Diesel is a herding dog with special abilities. Greta Scacci plays Joan. She is looking to find out why her ex husband wasn't in Spain but in Australia. This is a fun series with a stellar cast and great scenery. I can't wait to see if there will be a season two.

If you are under 40, or immature with your viewing tastes , this not for you. This series is slow brewing, bui I promise you, it is worth the watch. It is a masterpiece of craftmanship. The casting is 100% on the money. Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi are perfection in their roles. There are no false fronts here. No makeup applied to try to cover up reality or age. No fashion house was consulted to dress the players. It all looks and feels entirely real.
The stories are believable except for the time it actually takes to solve a real crime, but tv time constraints must be followed. Even so, you believe it at the time.
I hope this series and the players stay healthy for a long time.

Love this show! Such a lovely concept...The two main actors, Greta Scacchi and Bryan Brown make it look seamless - great acting, camaraderie and chemistry. So nice to see actors of a 'certain age' be the prime characters in a TV show - and still have other up and coming Australian actors throughout episodes.
The storylines are compelling and well written (with layback wit!); the Queensland locations are spectacular! I really enjoy so many shows on ACORN - so well done; "Darby and Joan" are definitely a winner for me and I would highly recommend it. I surely hope there is an upcoming Season 2.

Absolutely fantastic show, Bryan Brown has always been a favourite of mine, I couldn't stop watching and was so disappointed there were only eight episodes, I wanted it to go on and on, I'm addicted and can't wait for the next series to start. Greta Scacci is amazing too, fantastic actress, I knew I had seen her before then I remembered the pricking of my thumb. These two just bounce off each other so naturally I am watching the show for a second time because I enjoyed it so much. I reckon that this show is as good as Death in Paradise, another favourite of mine and should run fir many series, I can see these two having all kinds of adventures together with diesel the dog, and it would be great if they eventually become an item, I think it would be a wonderful way to develope the series, I can see them having all kinds of escapades. I'm rather hoping that the second series delves further into Jacks problems when he left the police force, they make a fantastic sleuthing team and all the ups and downs of getting to the bottom of the corruption will keep us on the edge of our seats. Please please please make another series as soon as possible, there are far too few shows being made these days that are worth watching but this one is a gold nugget, when something as good as this turns up it must be looked after and the characters can developed together, who ever decided on the casting for the show is an absolute genius.

I caught up with this programme by accident, I was watching a television series Whitstable Pearl, on the Freeview TV Channel Drama, and Darby and Joan was advertised on there.
Drama now has another TV programme, from the antipodes to match, with the other ANZAK shows.
It's an okay show something that I have, found easy enough to watch principally, because it hasn't as yet sunk into, the mire of an archetypal soap, opera but it's getting there gradually.
I know the actor Bryan Brown as an, Aussie actor for me it's his face, that rings the proverbial bell as one of those that, appear regularly in Australian movies.
Honestly I find Darby and Joan, to be a somewhat contrived, rational for a television show, which commences with, Joan's story of her husband.
The accident between Joan's camper-van, and Darby's Landrover was well avoidable, as the show unfolds I am left, continually asking why does, he bother to stay around her.
Joan seems more than happy to, involve Darby in her travails, but when it comes to anything related to him, she ensures that she can, pry into every facet of his life, and actually expects to be able, to do so by some sort of right.
Now we are getting to see some of, the skeletons popping out of Darby's, closet from his colourful life history.
What of course is inevitable in shows, of this sort is a romantic entanglement, between the two actors involved this is, stamped into the series DNA with the title.

Lighthearted, sweet, and interesting storyline and episodes. I love Greta and Bryan and wondered what happened to them in Hollywood. Happy to see them back in a great series with beautiful scenery and a dog! We need more series like this. Season 2? I hope. Greta, you will always be beautiful, no matter age or time, and Bryan, you will always be a brilliant actor and heartthrob. I loved you in FX! Each episode draws you closer to the truth about Joan's husband and if there is a Season 2, hopefully, Darby's justice. I hope you continue to create series with good, clean entertainment and the scenery is an added bonus.

Darby And Joan is a heartwarming series with two likeable and intelligent leads doing some amateur sleuthing while trying to solve the mystery surrounding Joan's husband who was found dead in Australia when he was ostensibly in Spain. Joan is English, a nurse and, while there a few "fish out of water" tropes these are few and she's no fool. Jack Darby is the laconic, emotionally stunted Aussie bloke, but there is more to him than that. He just doesn't want to overshare. Some great cameos from familiar Aussie actors and fantastic scenery to boot. If you want some light viewing with an overarching engaging narrative I can highly recommend this series. I hope there is a season 2.

On a deserted back road in Australia an English widow literally bumps into and teams up with an ex-police inspector whilst investigating her late husbands death in the middle nowhere. She has a few clues gleaned from his phone which set them on their travels through the outback solving a series of mini mysteries, if you can call them that, involving an assortment of potty characters, ex-loves and the now obligatory diversity storyline. Along the way we get the odd glimpse of what should be the main storyline: why was her husband in Australia in the first place and why did he end up dead in the middle of nowhere?
Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi are both excellent actors but not in this little excursion. They play the eponymous characters, Joan and Jack, like a pair of cardboard cut-outs with no chemistry whatsoever between them despite the storyline hinting at a developing relationship with each successive episode. Then there are the supporting characters in each episode who are in an entirely different league. Made up of every ridiculous archetypal Aussie personality that the scriptwriters could stuff in, they are often way over the top. The actors portraying them, apart from the odd few better known names, appear to have been plucked off the street so dire is the acting as they spout poor dialogue with all the expression of a Gerry Anderson puppet. And I'll not mention the irritating lesbian daughter, yawn!
To make up for the less than mediocre plot, poor character development and sketchy acting we are treated to long scenes of the outback; from long straight roads traversing miles of flat red earth linking quirky townships to lush green forests with secret waterfalls to rolling waves breaking on pristine beaches. In fact, a good percentage of each episode plays like a holiday company travelogue advertising "Visit Beautiful Australia". All very pretty but unnecessary to the plot.

Brian Brown and Greta Scachi look like they are having a blast filming this and that adds to the fun. If you enjoy the self deprecating - yet exaggerated style of Australian humor this is absolutely worth checking out. I'm about halfway through the series and although a bit formulaic, it has been consistent; therefore, the mix of quirky characters, scenery and inventive storylines have kept me engaged enough that I am confident the rest of the series will continue along the same vein and think if that sounds like your vibe, you might want to give it a go. Scenic rural Australia sets are a bonus.

Watched episode 1 by accident looking for something else but was hooked and binge watched the whole series. Great characters and interesting stories- really need to see the follow up about the ex cop being set up. Don't care if the stories are a bit far fetched it is compelling heart warming viewing. Two leads spark off each other and you feel you know them and you start to care about them. Scenery brilliant along the way as well so you really can't go wrong. Young people might not get the subtleties but generally one of the best series I have seen in years so highly recommend binge watching as you will really want to know what happens next !

Oh, I like it) Light, kind, nice and smart. Cases quite interesting and fresh but not too harsh and without the flow of dead bodies. Everything is just enough, nothing is too much. Each episode has some kind and warming thought that makes you think in aftertaste. And the splendid views and always smiling dog) That all is a right mix for a nice warm evening.
Although didn't like soundtracks. Guess it may be smth ethnical, so i try to respect, but the vocalising is rather demonic and contrasting to the warm atmosphere of the series. And the volume of it is much higher than the dialogues and increases suddenly, so it scared me and my neighbours during the night.
And guess writers' error - through all episodes one of the characters is called with their new name by people from their past that knew them with another name. If you know someone from you childhood, you'll call him by childhood name and it will take lots lots of practice to get used to new name.
