High Society couple The Benhams are found dead at their home, their West Indian born maid, Frannie Langton is arrested.
Definitely one of those love at first sight stories, pretty much what I'd expected from the trailers.
It's a fine first episode, it's both a love story, and a mystery. It's an unusual love story, refreshingly different from what is normally the case in historical bodice rippers, but it worked so well, we also have the added interest of the double murder.
It is a sumptuous production, it looks fantastic, terrifiic sets and costumes, credit to the lighting team too, so often these period dramas have excessively bright lighting, that's not the case here.
Karla Simone Spence did a fine job as Frannie, she's very much a character placed in unknown, unfamiliar surroundings, who fell in love. She has such striking features, she's got real presence.
Pooky Quesnel was terrific as the sour faced housekeeper Mrs Lennox, definitely a shade of Mrs Danvers about her, that hair is quite something.
Looking forward to the next.
8/10.
