Pretty to watch
christinagalloway-1947329 December 2022
The visual was what drew me in. The color scheme is beautiful and it is obvious this is a play adapted to a movie. I havent heard of this before and Im glad I watched it. The story is a typical whodunit. I'm giving it a 6 because the story is a weak one. Nothing to do with the acting or the movie. The storyline is just weak. But no story is a waste of time. Why do we have to put so many words into a review? Nobody has reviewed yet so I'm trying to be nice and leave the first one! So what it comes down to, cute to watch but dont expect to be swept off your feet. Visuals get an A+ though. Hazzah!!

Fun to watch
serena_balan31 December 2022
I started watching with no expectations, wanting to exercise my Italian, and had lots of fun. The storyline resembles Agatha Christie's stories, which I consider to be simple, engaging and relaxing to read. The women are gorgeous, the visuals are nice, the dialogue is funny. It's not a heavy-mistery movie, but a comedy and it did its job. I was not bored and I haven't once looked at my phone. I'm giving it 6 stars only because I think movies that have 8 stars or more are exceptional. 6 is nice, fun to watch if you're into this genre and bored, but not a "must see" or "thought provoking". All in all, not a waste of time.

Terrible ending
kluhyarg1 January 2023
I like whodunits and was enjoying this movie, but the conclusion I found terrible. I think the idea was to do a funny ending, but it was neither funny or makes sense to the story.

As a comedy I didn't find very funny, but, aside from the ending, it was an enjoyable watch. The passing is good and the movie has a nice length.

The actress do a good job with what they got from the script. The cinematography is very good and together with the sound make a very good atmosphere to this movie.

I gave this a 4.7 / 10. The script is not the strongest, but the only big flaw is its ending, but despite that, it was an enjoyable ride to me, minus the end of course.

Not bad
enitar8 January 2023
Nice try but there is a much better version, a French film 8 Femmes with absolutely stellar cast including Catherine Deneuve, Fannie Ardan, and other stars. The French film also included charming dances and songs for every female character.

However, the Italian version was not bad at all, with beautiful winter scenery and homely Christmas interior. Maybe too much farce and comic elements and to few drama to make it truly great, also lack of real crime moments in the plot made the film little bit shallow and more like a theatrical comedy than difficult family drama. I also wished less colourful but more truthful, more developed characters, as there was plenty of possibilities for this.

Not so bad re-remake .
ulicknormanowen22 January 2023
Few people know it,but Ozon's "huit femmes" is itself a remake ; a first version of Robert Thomas's play (also often performed on stage in the fifties) was filmed in black and white as 'la nuit des suspectes" (1957 ):this first effort was more pessimistic than Ozon 's whodunit cum musical comedy .

The Italian version jettisoned the songs -they were French and they should have been replaced by Italian hits ,had it been treated like in Ozon's pleasant work ;a director whose only daring gesture -not really risqué anymore at the time- was Ardant's lesbian character .

The Italian version kept it ; it is also enjoyable to see Ornella Vanoni ( a singer and co-star of Virna Lisi in "Romolo e Remo peplum) reprising the part of Danielle Darrieux .All the actresses overplay (they also did in the French color version ) which is not a real problem ; Thomas was certainly influenced by Agatha Christie's whodunits ;the situation -people locked up in a house surrounded by the snow- reminds you of her play "the mousetrap ".

Mostly meandering and uncompelling
wesleythegnome15 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There's undeniably good things about this movie. The set design and fashion are nothing short of gorgeous. The actresses are all skilled and fun to watch. These things stand out, and elevate the movie to a certain extent.

But it's not enough to carry the whole movie. The plot is thin and poorly presented. We arrive at revelations by characters going "you have a secret, don't you" at several points in the movie, and another character responding "yes, yes I do".

The most mysterious character - the maid - serves a beautiful dinner. This is taken as proof that she's working somewhere below her capabilities, and the femme fatale demands to know her secret. The maid proudly goes "yes, I only came here because I enjoyed sleeping with the boss" and everyone has very mild reactions to this and then she decides to leave. Okay..?

The maid can't leave immediately so she decides to take on the spinster aunt as a permanent pet project instead. Why?

The revelations are all like this. They barely make sense and the responses from other characters are tepid or borderline nonsensical. A planted gun is found and three of the women let out little surprised screams, and that's the end of it. Why would the gun even matter as a murder framing device...? The patriarch wasn't killed with a gun.

The characters are all stereotypes, but I can forgive that, since I think it was intentional. The patriarch has no lines in the movie, is only shot from the back, and the only way we learn more about him is through descriptions of others.

Even then, this character manages to come off as intensely unsympathetic. He's bad with money, he's not a good businessman in general, he only married his wife so he could buy a house he likes, he was willing to put all his relatives through the trauma of his death just so he could decide who to leave impoverished in a time where women were wholly dependent on men for security, and seems to be loved by no one besides his children.

But when he actually dies by the end, not even his children are particularly upset. His youngest daughter asks if she's going to be grounded over the murder mystery she planned, her mother confirms, and that's the ending. It's light-hearted to the point of being stupid.

Horrible ending
pauli_gomez7 January 2023
I was enjoying the movie. A cozy whodunit, with beautiful style. Cinematography, costume, setting, all beautiful. I guessed the culprit (or reduced it to 2) quite easily but I have seen "8 femmes", the French movie that inspired this one and, even if I do not completely remember it, I had an idea of what was going on.

Still, the actual ending makes no sense. No, no, no. It was irritating as hell to see that. It ruined which could have been a 9/10 movie. Now it is 6.5 for me, I rounded it to 6.

I do not have more to say but I need to reach the minimum of characters. Sorry for this silly line.

Horrible Script Murders This Movie
mrcaw1230 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Within 10 minutes or so the "man" of the house is found laying on his bed with a knife in his back.

Rest of movie is the 7 women basically questioning each other. Upon answering the rest typically say something like you could be lieing. Which is responded by a but I'm not statement.

This is LITERALLY what goes on for the entire movie.

There is no suspense at all.

I thought perhaps this was supposed to be a kind of satirical comedy and perhaps it was, but you know, you should be laughing if that was the case.

Some of the characters are grossly underwritten with not much to say or do.

That being said I can't recall a movie I've seen in quite a long time that simply didn't really HAVE a screenplay. Everything that was said in the ENTIRE movie should have been said in the fist 15 minutes of the movie and THEN the actual plot of the movie would be played out.

I'm shocked that these actresses even agreed to be in it. All it takes is one reading of the script to realize that the script is better suited for a 10 minute SNL skit than an entire movie.

The entire action of the movie takes place over about 12 hours or so, so there's no chance really for the characters to even change their clothes.

What a shame. It has a nice "look" to it but these actresses have NOTHING to do.

It's TOO weird.

Good movie
Wordwhisperer22 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good movie. Nicely played, although the script was not so good.

Pros:
  • the production design was great. The colour scheme was excellent
  • the acting of Margherita Buy, Benedetta Porcaroli and Luis Rainieri was very good
  • the dialogue was funny sometimes, it could have been better to even more sarcasm than it already did.

Cons:
  • the script: sometimes it jumped from one scene to another without a connection between them
  • the ending was horrible. It made sense, but the way was put on screen was not believable. (Really?? A guy who is staging his death should runs away instead of confronting the women? It would have been even funnier)

All in all, the movie was good, entertaining.

so bad
isabellesi-1145015 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The plot, the acting, the character everything was absolutely terrible. Literally the worst movie i've ever seen. Completely random events through out the entire thing, nothing gets resolved. At one point two women are fighting about loving the same man, the next moment one gets her leg bitten, and the very next there making out. At the end the grandfather randomly commits suicide and for no reason. He also originally dies within the first 3 minutes of the movie, and nobody really cares. The acting is just terrible some of the worst i've ever seen, the dialogue is even more awful, watching the movie was pure hell i do not reccomend.

Sweet and whimsical
fiona_rp16 January 2023
Now after 15 minutes I was starting to 'switch off' but then I really became absorbed in this sweet, whimsical and entertaining film. Beautiful costumes and scenes with plenty of vibrant colour which enhance this comical film. The plot has a twist and all characters are very well cast indeed. The acting was good and the story moved along at a good pace.

Grandma was my favorite character, and I had quite a few suspects in mind, none of which were correct. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was funny in parts but not too much that it spoilt the plot.

Thank you and well done to all!! Definitely NOT a 5.

Silly fun
idris-531697 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Was scrolling Netflix when I saw this - i love a whodunnit so was quite excited - albeit it was dubbed which can be quite distracting But I enjoyed it - it was well acted over the top and funny - I did actually predict the end twist which was a bit disappointing but overall it was a fine little movie.

If you're looking for a non traditional Christmas movie - this should definitely tick all the right boxes.

The ending scenes were super silly and it seemed way to perhaps a sequel- which would be interesting in my opinion- The visuals and setting were fun - just a bit confused to what time era it was supposed to be - but again a thoroughly enjoyable wee film.

7 women written by men based on stereotypes
sooshaq3 January 2023
Hey, alright! A murder mystery with an all female cast. Cool! Except it was not cool. Not at all. The title should definitely be "7 women written by men based on stereotypes"

Each womon in this movie is an over exaggeration of a stereotype. Bitter housewife who married for money? Check. Crazy old nana? Check. Spinster aunt desperate for affection? Check. Amoral woman who sleeps around? Check. Every single character is completely one-sided and speaks as if the writers have only ever encountered women via films from the '20s.

Beyond that there was no real plot. Just a bunch of women bickering with one "feminist" line thrown in at the very end to try and appease everyone. As a woman who has been in a room with several other women on many many occasions I can promise not one of us has ever spoken in a manner even remotely reminiscent to this awful script.

I stuck through the entire movie trying to give it a real chance but the ONLY reason it gets any stars at all is for the set and costume designers. They did a lovely job and are the only redeeming factors.

What was up with the victim narrative for the father in the end?... (pun intended)
gretadzindzileviciute29 December 2022
Entered the movie hoping for witty feminist rhetorics, left it disappointed, as the ending made it painfully obvious the director was a man oblivious to any such ideas. The plotline of the story, although wombling a little bit, was able to stand on its own, however, what really made the movie pop was its simple, yet beautiful cinematography. Despite being constrained to one place, the cameras were able to masterfully capture the warm, homely feel of a Christmas night in a villa. The ladies did a swell job acting, however I must mention that youngest daughter's (Caterina, as I believe) behaviour was unbearable to watch - yet I'd put the finger on the director for the faults of such an unlikable character.

All in all, 5/5. Had the potential to become a Christmas classic, was dragged down by a pretty stupid plotwist and an undeserving victim narrative of the father.

Would have been tolerable if I spoke Italian
Piperson11 July 2023
I saw this on Netflix dubbed into American English. I could actually understand what the gals were saying which should have pleased me. It didn't because the bland AMURIKEN accents didn't match up with the rest of it. It was pretty dull. Lacked suspense. I think hearing the lovelyItalian language would have helped. I enjoyed that the women all wore vivid jewel tone dresses. It made them easy to tell apart. The sets were incredibly colorful. They were the best part.

For some reason, this movie is set at Christmas. It was lovely to see that the only Christmas decoration was a tree. So anti-Hallmark! I could live in Italy.

"There's a knife stuck in his back!"
classicsoncall1 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This film is done in the style of 2019's "Knives Out", but it's nowhere near as clever or engaging. It serves as a murder mystery until the final reveal, and then the story's twist catches one by surprise. For good or bad is for the viewer to decide; in my case I felt a little let down. The picture moves back and forth among the seven women who all have some relationship with the 'murdered' man named Marcello (Luca Pastorelli), all of whom could have been guilty and spend their on-screen time denying they did it. I suppose this could have been a more compelling movie with better writing and more capable actors. The characters of the old grandmother Nonna Rachelle (Ornella Vanoni) and Agostina (Sabrina Impacciatore) came across as caricatures, while the action of some of the players didn't make a whole lot of sense. Why, for example, did Susanna (Diana Del Bufalo) find it necessary to sneak into the house the night before her 'arrival' to tell her father Marcello that she was pregnant? What was the big deal about that? In any event, the picture was mildly humorous at times but not that gripping as a murder mystery. Even the cops weren't called until old Marcello was really dead, and then only as a setup for spinster Agostina to finally get a man.

Great Acting, astonishing cinematography & Surprisingly bad script
pooz_the_gun29 May 2023
Let me preface this review by saying that I've never seen the original play this is based on and that I've watched it in the original Italian version with no dubbing. However, I needed some Italian subtitles.

First of all, the acting is great. There's some outstanding performances by the women that play the maid and the older daughter but no one in this movie missed the mark. The best thing about this film however is the cinematography. The color palette and the camera movement is beautiful. And these two things are actually what's saving this movie from being laughably bad. The characters, their behavior and even their dialogue seem farfetched and are often ridiculous caricatures. Storywise there's also the problem of how to reveal the secrets and the only solution for this is always a character who by chance knows about it of another character but for some reason waited in telling it. This happens multiple times.

So, this is supposed to be a Satire. And therefore, I get that people are supposed to be exaggerations, but if they're neither connecting with the audience nor make them laugh, then it's a failure.

To sum it up. It's not an atrocious movie by all means, but for a whodunnit satire you need a smart script and this ain't it. It's worth however a peak if you're interested in its cinematography or great acting.

Overacting, predicatable and poor ending, and forced LGTB+ agenda
daniroldan17 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this movie about a bunch of women dealing with a dead guy in a mansion, the story's kinda meh. It's all super predictable. They all try to figure out who killed him.

It gets weird with this forced LGTB+ agenda, with a scene where the wife and lover fight and at the end have a lesbian kiss, without any context to the plot, no point at all, it was like "we have to put some LGTB+ stuff".

The big twist is the husband and daughter faking his death, but surprise, he actually dies falling off a balcony. What's crazier? None of the women seem bothered. They decide to live together, chilling in the mansion with his money like nothing happened.

The script's just blah, the forced agenda feels awkward, and the characters don't click. Overall, the movie's a letdown, leaving you wondering why you bothered watching.

d_penn13 January 2024
I didn't know it's a comedy movie. I was going to stop watching it because I realized that there are no other characters than the 7 women. The murder of a single man in the movie was not given any importance. The whole movie revolved on the interaction between the women. It was drama like konkani dramas. Acting was good and gave a good laugh. I think it's not everyone's cup of tea. Not worth it. Acting is cringe. If you have nothing else to watch and just want to pass time then its fine.

Its a "comedy" mystery movie and a remake of French movie. The direction is poor. Ending felt abrupt. Little below average.

Way better than rated
ericcarmen3 January 2023
Occasionally a movie comes along that you take a chance on believing it may be better than reviewers have rated and it I am here to say that this is one of them. We had fun sitting down to an easy going mystery that made us laugh.

The character build up was excellent and every character had a reason to murder. I may have guessed the ending as we got near it, but that doesn't make the movie any less enjoyable. I hope that we see more movies like this in the future so we can watch something besides the glamours Hollywood style that has grown so tiresome. Some may call this movie silly, but I call it refreshing.

Meaningless whodunnit movie
AvionPrince1614 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is a whodunnit and we tried to understand who killed the father. Basically we will have some revelations, surprises, wait for the real reasons behind the murder. We got this but i need to say that the way the events happened really was illogical(like the 2 womans who kissed each other), felt a lazy writing in it. The mise en scene is clearly non existent, it lack of intention (we heard all the stories with these womens but without any real interest behind it) and the revelation at the end (that the dad was not really dead but they made him suicide himself; what a waste of time; he couldnt bring his perspective on the case; it would be a man perspective on the womans and clearly bring a missing puzzle in it but we understand that he jumped from the balcony; what a waste). The movie dont give the time to tell the story; its rushing and give the revelations without really known why they talked about it? Why they revealed some stuff? It looked really superficial and off topics mostly. Its only talk about money, mens, jealousy and womens of course. The lights were interesting and some visuals were pretty good. And some shots didnt feel that the movie happened in one place: the house and didnt feel slow or something but the story go in many ways without really interest and these womens just revealed stuff that nobody asked and the reasons behind all this were completely dumbed and the only reason to make us stay was the man perspective; but he jumped and that dont seemed to troubled the womens and felt that the immersion clearly missed here. And the story didnt make any sense. Like i said a meaningless whodunnit movie!

Beautiful looking film and it's le signore
neil-douglas20101 January 2023
First things first this is a farce of a film and sometimes they can be truly annoying. Luckily this has a two things going for it, a : the film is truly beautiful to watch, and b: the cast are top notch. Susanna (DiSana Del Bufalo) arrives at the family house for Christmas. Also at the house are her mum and dad, gran, aunt, sister and the new maid. Soon the maid finds the father dead, stabbed in the back. Is the murderer still in the house, they all start blaming each other and they all seem to have motives. Some great performance in this film, including Sabrina Impacciatore as the mousy Aunt Agostina and Luisa Ranieri as the maid Maria. Great ending too.

Great classic murder mystery
redditanon3 January 2023
Six women find their beloved father, husband, son-in-law murdered and discover they are trapped in the house unable to reach the police or escape. Suddenly a seventh mystery woman shows up and secrets are revealed as all women play detective trying to figure out who the murderer is among them.

Beautifully visual and great cast and acting. This is an example of a classic whodunit murder mystery where all the character's deepest and darkest secrets are revealed. It's fun to watch and there's even a twist at the end. Don't listen to the bad reviews here, if you are a fan of whodunit murder mysteries, this one is a nice homage to the classics and it's Italian, which is what makes it unique. The film obviously takes place at an earlier time in Italy, hence the outfits, hair, makeup, and decor, so no, you're not going to get references to today's social issues. It's an Italian version of the film Clue except with earlier generation women. I enjoyed it very much. My only advice is to listen to it in the beautiful Italian language, the dubbed version will ruin it.

Excellent!
elailiesi7 January 2023
I've seen this story in French and English movies also, but I was delighted by this Italian version - and shocked by the low rating.

The acting is great, the storyline is captivating and the scenery is wonderful!

It's a jewel of a movie, and Agatha Christie whodunit fans, as well as people who love the comedy crime genre, atmospheric & eye candy movies, will love it.

It's still pretty new so I hope it will gain the attention of the right people in the months to come, who will correct this misguiding rating.

For people who enjoyed the movie and left a 5/10 review: I'm not sure you know how reviews work.

Funny
mariska825 January 2023
Evert review is it's writers.

So do no't read on and just watch it, with a glass of your favorite drink.

I had a good laugh about it. The imprisonment of the lady's social lives, their characters around it and their ignorance. But especially they were just women who just found out their father/lover was dead. They all did a fantastic acting job on this, while they want to fond out who's guilty. So alle their dirty secrets are no longer secret. Or are they?

The decors were sublime and the movie just plays at Christmas and isn't "chrismassy" at all.

So, watch it een you want a nice, relaxing evening. And forget every review. Then you'll definitely enjoy it.
