Good Premise, Bad Writing
nafps10 April 2023
The idea and series had so much potential. So did the actor. But it was all let down by very lackluster writing.

Traditionally, vampires were homeless stumbling filthy creatures who hid in the shadows. But Bela Lugosi was such a great commanding actor we all think of vampires as wearing tuxedos and capes.

Instead of more realistic portrayals, Hollywood has gotten more fantasy filled. Vampires got more impossibly suave and cool, with powers like a superhero, and die in explosions or gushers of blood.

So going the opposite way was long overdue. This show is claiming to be a comedy. But I didn't laugh even once.

There's not much action. Instead we get a slow and not very good drama about a guy picked on for his weight.

Fun twist on the eternal vampire tropes that brings it down to earth
movieswithgreg2 November 2022
This movie playfully answers the question "what happens when the non-beautiful people become vampires?"

Think of it as an updated Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with multicultural stars. Most notably, a Fil-Am star, which is a very welcome and long-overdue change.

In this world, vampires are only supposed to convert new vampires who are beautiful, fit, svelte, cool, sophisticated. Enter Reginald -- the fat, awkward, unfit, remarkably un-athletic, uber-nerdy incel fast-food worker with no prospects. By a stroke of fortune and misfortune, Reginald gets turned. And the rest of the vamp community don't dig it.

Sure, this has Hallmarkish tones, and the dialogue and situations seem aimed to teens and 20somethings, but the series starts well, is funny, with some vampy coolness. Reginald is funny, albeit a shade too whiny, and incessantly whiny. Just when you think you can't stand it, it's revealed that there's more to Reginald than his girth.

Easy watch vampire show within thrills.
Aesafern9 January 2023
When I first started watching Reginald the Vampire it was a bit what-the-heck am I watching. However, given some time, I think I like this show. It's definitely not thrilling and it's definitely cheesy.

The budget for this show doesn't look massive but they do a good job with what that have. And it's true, some of the acting is questionable. This could be the directing? Maybe it's meant to be this way. I've seen some of these actors in other productions and they're good actors.

I don't think this show is meant to be taken seriously, it's a light-hearted fun watch. And if you're a person who gets anxious easily, you'll be able to enjoy this show without feeling like you need to leave the room.

I'm hoping for a second season. Watch a few episodes before you write it off. Reginald the Vampire has potential.

Interview With a Vampire, Student Version
nightringer-7684013 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a cinematic college student version of Anne Rice' Interview with a Vampire. Injected with Disney's and Nickelodeon's righteous and heart dramatic story line, it does lack originality and less 'horror' nuance. Mixed with the proven Riverdale-style formula is definitely visible.

As a profit magnet and it does work, especially with ugly duckling concept and 'Wolf and Cub' inspired drama. Then combined with familiar face from MCU's Spiderman, young adults will certainly enjoy this series.

Don't expect too much storyline depth and classic literature excitements. You will, however, get brainless entertainment.

---

Updated after Episode 6: The story line does get better, if not illogically weirder. Here we are with the ugliest normal looking, silly behavior and a wimp of a vampire has a witch and a sinister assassin vampire fall in love with him. Silly and laughable, but nerd magnet to the bone. Yes, I'm a nerd.

No zest
AfricanBro13 October 2022
I assume like many, I've only see Jacob Batalon in support roles and his parts weren't really enough to let show if he's a good actor or not. But he deserves better than this, at some point I thought maybe cashing in some cheques but marvel money must be better than that. I guess he was hunting a leading role, I just think he could've had better options because this wasn't it.

I hate it when people talk down on a series/movie in a review by just calling it trash, worst thing they seen all year, waste of an hour bla bla without actually saying why and talking about the show. So, the script is so bad and feels unimaginative, dialogue is often cliche and scenes hard to believe sometimes, like the prayer. Sure the feelings might be genuine but it felt off saying it aloud. The sets and costumes look like minimal effort was put into them; I remember my sister used to watch "lazy town", I think that's what it was called, and some the visuals and sets are reminiscent of that. It also also not as dramatic as it's put out to be. I guess it'd be hard for actors to make this script work, but it's one of those shows were you can see in every scene that they're trying to act, it doesn't come off natural.

I'm finding it hard to see how this was actually green lit by the studio, or how jacob's team decided going from his MCU roles to taking up this role would be good for his career. The two reviews already on here are pretty positive so to each their own I guess. Actually just look at the rating graph and see how the 1 star ratings are piled up. This show probably got on your radar because of Jacob Batalon and it might be good to see him in a leading role but he deserves much better than this. At least that's what I would want if I was a fan of his.

Its an interesting and entertaining concept in search for a show
the_malbogia4 May 2023
I first must say, I generally love Vampires and the dark universe genre that normally follows them, and when I clicked on the show after looking at the thumbnail, I already knew I was in a "Millennial/Gen-Z vampires" or a "Vampires in Southern Califonia gentrified" type story. And I embraced that concept, because I knew it would be worth a good laugh.

What I got was a mishmash of different story types mashed into one.

You got the badluck bryan looking for romance story cross paths with the vampire who is trying to avenge/atone for his unfortunate past story. These stories do not mesh well together and are very distracting from one another. As a result you get a show that tries to be funny while trying to be dramatic. Instead of mixing the two stories well, youre pulled back in forward between a comediac romance featuring a millennial vampire and a drama featuring a vampire trying to fight for whats right. True Blood meets Hotel Transylvania.

At the end of it, it just doesnt work, and I was definitely rooting for the show. It has some very good ideas, and Jacob Batalon does pretty well as the badluck bryan of the story, but there arent too many redeeming qualities to it beyond that.

Worst acting and writing i think ive ever seen
animegamer42014 October 2022
This is worse than porn writing/acting. The dialogue drones on and rehashes the same points over and over. It was like it was written by kids. The acting is just as childish. I cant believe this guy was in a major motion pocture. There is no charisma or expression in the main characters acting at all. Its a cool concept and i like the casting but the terrible acting from everyone on the show ruined it. Theyre all somewhat monotone. Lots of run on sentences. They could have easily cut out half of the meandering dialog and made a better 23 minute show. This is efinitely a 'lets hate watch this' kimda show you roast with your friends.

Fun twist to the usual vampire story
oscar-batucan7 October 2022
First episode and it seems like a good fun show. It had me engaged and interested in what would happen next to Jacob Batalon's Reginald.

Good to see him in a leading role, but still bringing the comedy.

Mandela Van Peebles gives me young Mario Van Peebles vibes. So far he seems like a good choice to play the mysterious vampire mentor.

Reginald's daily experience seems quite realistic as well and shows the type of experiences people like him go through.

Hopefully the rest of the series keeps up this type of momentum and we get to see some interesting things happen for Reginald, Maurice and the rest of their mates.

My
Headturner116 April 2023
Stupid internet or Hulu was having issues last night! I could only watch like 30 seconds before it would freeze and I'd have to restart my whole system! The few episodes I got thru( I think it was 3 and a half) were decent! I thought Mandella was Mario( Mario he is not)! I can't stand his character. The guy who plays reginald must be a stand up comic or something( they all have a similar style of acting) and again most of the women actors suck! The one( forget her name) that's trying to be the detective of it all is decent. I need to finish the rest and report back. Tho I can't help but feel this could have been really good with a better script and actors..

It could've been good.
agetech17 October 2022
It could've been good and the show had so much potential. But it's like they went out of their way to make it bad. Just like they did with Astrid and Lilly Save the World.

The first episode they continuously harp on him being overweight just like they did with Astrid and Lily.

The acting is OK special effects and cinematography they cut corners on. But that's OK if the storyline was really good. The storyline just revolves around him being overweight and not having any confidence.

The the second episode they are still focusing on him being "grotesque and disgusting because he's fat." Again I wish the show is going to be better.

I'm pretty sure I like this show
meecosha18 November 2022
First, I read all the reviews, and they are underwhelming, to be honest. So I thought what a shame, I really like shows about vampires... Then I thought, to hell with it, why not try it out myself. So I watched the first episode and liked it, and then all the 7 episodes, which are out right now. And I don't regret a thing!

The characters are likeable, and the show doesn't bore me like most do nowadays, it's quite fun to watch. I don't get where all the hate comes from, I haven't even noticed any obvious and annoying agenda moments, which is good in my book.

Overall, I get bored easily, and this show does entertain me enough for me to write this review to dissuade others from overlooking Reginald's story! Of course, it's not perfect, but what is? The most important thing is, if you enjoy it or not.

Good but flawed
comicmakers16 June 2023
So the concept of this show is good and i do like the characters but the show is flawed. The pacing of the show is badly executed. A lot of episodes spend too much time on moments that should be cut in half, focusing on silly subplots that meander. The dialogue can also be stiff which i suspect may be someone behind the camera was very rigid in not letting the actors deviate from what is on the page. So certain scenes come off as awkward and robotic.

But there are some funny bits . The way its filmed is very unique. There are a lot colors that make it look like a comic book. The actors are very good. So everyone is perfectly cast. The show is funny and the plots are interesting, I just wish they would tighten it up. So the show is good and has potential. I just hope next season they can fix the mistakes they made.

Terrible in every way
mluinstra27 October 2022
The story was terrible as well as the acting. The whole thing felt fake. Simply put, this should not have been made.

I didn't care for the lead actor here that played Ned in the Spiderman movies, and I found him even worse here.

They spend the first episode teasing him about his weight, which is just sad. How is fat shaming still a thing? Considering they focused on his weight let's you know they were out of ideas right from the start. Even they didn't know what to do with this show.

They still want around 100 words, and I have nothing else to say about this dumpster fire of a movie. Almost done now.

Dumb, quirky and easy take it for what it is...
calichick827-889-53689522 December 2023
I do not understand half of these reviews ripping this show apart. It is a dumb quirky show and I have a hard time believing it's trying to be anything other than just that. It's really just a show about a Reginald learning to be a vampire and an adult at the same time. The acting in the show is not any game changing masterpiece and that's okay. It's funny and easy to watch on a rainy day while you do chores or little hobbies. The story line is interesting but easy to digest there's a little horror but it's all just a little quirky. These days people either want sitcoms or thought provoking shows that feel like movies. What happened to all the shows in the middle? I miss just enjoying lighthearted shows.

Takes itself too seriously...
NullUnit4 November 2022
I watched the first 5 episodes and gave up.

It started as a quirky, off-beat story. Not the greatest thing on TV, but an okay way to pass an hour. It's campy, low-rent, and inline with most Sy-Fy shows. You go in expecting the cheeseball stuff, and it delivered.

The fact that Reginald is not only kind of "dumpy" in his physical appearance, but also appears to have essentially an entirely hairless head - with indiscernible eyebrows, no eyelashes and without even a hint of hair growth anywhere else.. well.. it makes him look like unnatural from the jump even before he's "turned".

I got to episode 4 ... and.. well.. it was just bad on an unentertaining level. It seems to be taking itself WAY, WAY, too seriously and is trying to be some sort of compelling emotional drama as opposed to the campy, stupid, thing it started as. Getting through episode 4 was more a struggle simply because it was so, over-the-top boring and assumes one actually cares about the characters (which I don't).

I gave up entirely on this and removed it from my DVR schedule after episode 5. I was bored with episode 5 as well. The story, what there is of it, is moving forward at glacial speed. I've grown weary of the "but i'm a weak fat guy" schtick in every episode. The entire "love interest" thing is just so COMPLETELY unbelievable yet its become, essentially, the bulk of the storyline. The "bad lady" just looks like a carnival clown and her acting is atrocious. There's zero sense of "danger" or "thriller" aspect to any of it.

Basically, it's become FORCED drama with little to no comedy or "campiness" by episode 5. Any comedy/camp is just being rehashed over and over and over and over ad over in each and every episode - there's nothing new.

Most of the time I want to slap Reginald in the back of the head and yell "Be a man, idiot!". (Let alone vampire.) The 12 year old neighborhood girl is more mature and seems to have more where-with-all than Reginald. And how "broken" is the love interest to be so enthralled with him??? What's he got to offer a woman???? Certainly not wealth or power.. and he's exceptionally weak on personality and confidence. And NONE of that has changed in 5 episodes.

I've just grown tired of the SAME jokes every single episode weaved in between overly dramatic scenes conveyed by actors with, well, below Oscar-level skills.

Poor acting and writing
joannabarker-0482319 January 2023
I had to force myself to get through the first episode. It felt like it was written by 40 year old men with no understanding of the age of the main character. There was a distinct lack of humour and soooo much exposition. The lead actor was not up to carrying the show.

Such a shame as the premise was intriguing. What should have been a fun twist on the vampire genre was a snooze fest. I think the attempt was to do to teen vampire stories what they did to misfit aliens in Resident Alien. Reginald severely failed. This is no Resident Alien.

So many good shows being cancelled and they're greenlighting this.

This is a fun show!
BiBiKay8 November 2022
This is a fun, light hearted show. It's a comedy, that you're not meant to take too seriously. And, you can have this on in the background while doing something or watch it while winding down for bed.

It's not perfect, but it's fun. Is it fresh and something brand new? Not really. Does that make it terrible? Hell, no. How many of us have rewatched TV shows cause we liked it? Or watched something that's similar cause we're in the mood. Not everything needs to be the new best thing. Sometimes, we just want silly fun. And this delivers on the silly fun.

In fact, I just finished one episode that introduced a new character and had me crying out that I wanted the next episode already.

I would really give it a 7/10, but boosting by a star to help combat the review bombers. I honestly have no idea why this is receiving them.

Put it back where it came from
hasherella17 April 2023
Jacob Batalon is a bad actor. I don't care what he's been in. He's not good in this. EVERY other actor OUT SHINES him. Even the bad ones . I thought it was maybe gonna change after the pilot. I saw that this was a book first. I normally try to read the book first in any situation. Saw this on Hulu, gave it a try. Bad acting. LOTS of plot holes and "wtf? Wait!" Or "what?". Any time I thought it was getting good or interesting, the acting or the "kid holding an out of control firehose" kicked in and I was lost again. Everyone loves a good story about god and the Bible and vampires... jk, they don't. There are SO MANY AMAZING BOOKS that you could make into a show. This should never have been one.

So much better than the source material
holysin-129 December 2022
Read the book series a handful of years ago on Kindle unlimited. It was if nothing else mildly entertaining. The TV show is much better than the books. They've changed a rather significant portion of the story generally for the better, but don't look to either the show or the books for serious thought provoking ideas. The groundbreaking bit is that we have a fat vampire. Everything else is as expected. The TV show is a solid 8 out of 10 for what it is due to the quality of the actors. The book series is a middling 5 out of 10 due to the ability of the author to get into a teenager's mind (Reginald is 15 in the books.)

How did this happen?
wdmfvws24 December 2023
Fat Vampire has been a part of my permanent online reading library for longer than I can remember. I think I've read it 3 or 4 times over the years. I relate to it on a variety of levels.

I waited for YEARS for a network to pick up the story. Imagine how excited I was to find this. But this is not the story of Reginald. This is horrible.

The story has been dumbed down, the actors don't match the characters at all, the acting is bad, and it's catering to the wrong age of audience. I can't even keep the show on in the background because it just makes me mad.

These books are so clever and unique, I just needed somewhere to rant about how disappointed I am with what they did to it. It's so derivative I'm saddened to read that people actually enjoy it.

Do yourself a solid and read the books.

To the content
DavePotter12 February 2023
This rating was specifically given for certain aspects of content that were in the show. In my mind they were inappropriate and should be really questioned. Many probably wouldn't agree and that's fine, I didn't find the show in general so bad. However there were certain aspects that you should not be presented and seem to me to be more of a subliminal nature. They are trying to normalize eating human flesh.

Careful what you deem entertainment and what is actually programming of society to accept things that are either detrimental or Satanic and evil.

People who think my comment is grasping at straws, will see later when they introduce more and more things.

Very inconsistent
deliabattie22 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was going to be a fun YA vampire show, but it is not. I'm not sure who it is aimed at. Sometimes it is very serious and quite adult, at others time it's a teen romance. Apparently it's supposed to be a comedy, but I didn't find anything in it funny. It feels like someone had an idea for a show and it was greenlit but they hadn't thought what they were going to do beyond the initial premise

The characters' behaviour is utterly insistent. Sometimes they are trying to kill each other, other times they are teaming up. There's a killer who seems to have a connection with a lesbian character but then confusingly falls for the lead male. It makes no sense. Halfway through the series the main hero starts acting horrifically and completely differently to how he has been previously. You absolutely can't root for him any more.

The acting is patchy. The actors/characters often feel like they are in different shows to each other.

I'm on episode 9 and I'm trying to finish the series but it's a real slog. Such a shame as I was hoping for a fun campy show.

An entertaining horror comedy
DarkVulcan296 October 2022
I watched the first episode, feeling an origin to a superhero, but instead a vampire. Jacob Batalon as Reginald, brings the comic chemistry that he brought to the Spider Man movies, although he does not overdue it. You really like and try to root for him all the way.

Mandala Van Peebles is good as Maurice, the vampire who takes Reginald under his wing. He seems to be channeling Giancarlo Esposito. Has amusing effects. Not sure how long it will last, I mean so far I just watch the first episode. Maybe it will keep just better has it goes on, hopefully. We can never tell. I just my fingers crossed.

An excellent pisstake on tired old "beautiful" vampires
evangibson-4621913 December 2022
Those worried about the fatshaming early on, it's totally the point that the vampires are out of date vain (vein, ha!) elitist jerks.

The show is _not_ picking on Reginald, it's picking on _them_.

It's a parody and comedy of older vampire shows, full of tiny cool touches.

Sure, some things could be done better, but have you _seen_ B Grade Horror like most Vampire stories?

I find it laughable that people can complain about the acting and writing in this but claim they are fans of vampire stories!

This is a self aware mockery of the bad writing and acting on _purpose_ and mostly the vampires act like vampires in old B-grade stories, but the humans and Reginald don't.

Comedy With Blood, Pop Colors Non-Stop
sgguru14 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was intrigued from the very first image advertising this show. SyFy Channel has produced some entertaining series, so I gave it a try. It didn't disappoint me. The neon glow to the sets, are just what my mood requires, and the color combinations jump off the screen. Reginald is likeable and he copes with being overweight by constantly joking about it, when other's make fun of him. He has some strange friendships with co-workers, as well as some of his customers at the Slurpee Shack. ( A refreshing change from your typical burger joint) It depicts a different take on the vampire genre. You root for the poor guy and all his miserable setbacks. I'm not a Spiderman geek, so that isn't coloring my previous impressions of the actor playing Reginald. Innocent Blood was a favorite camp vamp movie I used to have in my collection, so I do appreciate a good comedy of horror. The smart-ass little girl seems to know more about vamp lore than Reginald ever will, and helps him more than Maurice, his maker. It's not for everyone, but I am looking forward to the 3rd episode.
