825 Forest Road has a few redeeming elements, but ultimately it doesn't do enough to stand out in the haunted house subgenre.

I recently watched 825 Forest Road (2025) on Shudder. The story follows a family searching for a fresh start who move into a new house in a small town. Unfortunately, the town-and the house-have a dark history that threatens to make their new beginning anything but refreshing.

The film is written and directed by Stephen Cognetti (Hell House LLC) and stars Elizabeth Vermilyea (Hell House LLC: Lineage), Kathryn Miller (Nefarious), Joe Bandelli (Hell House LLC), and Brian Anthony Wilson (Law Abiding Citizen).

This is one of those horror films that focuses more on building a backstory and explaining why things are happening rather than showing them unfold on screen. I found myself wanting more horror scenes-it felt slow at times and bordered on boring. That said, when the horror finally kicks in, the effects are well done. There are solid practical effects, effective makeup to enhance the haunted visuals, and a couple of decent jump scares.

Still, it's the kind of film where you might find yourself checking your phone regularly, waiting for something to happen.

In conclusion, 825 Forest Road has a few redeeming elements, but ultimately it doesn't do enough to stand out in the haunted house subgenre. I'd give it a 5/10.

Slow burn with great atmosphere and a haunting payoff

This one won't be for everyone. It's a quiet, deliberately paced supernatural thriller that focuses more on mood and mystery than scares. But if you're into slow-burn horror, it absolutely delivers on atmosphere.

There's a found footage feel to parts of it, and the way the story unfolds-through interviews, old recordings, and subtle clues-makes it feel more like a haunted documentary than a traditional narrative. It gets under your skin gradually.

The last act really pays off, and while I wouldn't call it terrifying, it leaves a chill that lingers. Think Lake Mungo meets Hell House LLC, but more subdued. Worth checking out if you like your horror low-key and creepy.

Oof this was rough

Alright, let's just be real-825 Forest Road sucks. It's one of those movies where halfway through, you're checking how much time's left and hoping everyone just dies already so it can end. The setup isn't terrible-creepy house, weird vibes-but it feels like it was written by AI that got bored halfway through.

Doing this story in chapters was a huge misstep, ESPECIALLY from different angles of the same events. They should have done it from the POV of the vlogger and just run with found footage/view from the audience.

As a massive Hell House LLC fan... I was let down. Obviously it doesn't have to try and be Hell House, but it can at least be well made and scenes that are truly scary...

I liked it

I'm not sure why folks are giving it bad reviews. It wasn't as bad as folks are saying it was.

Could the ending have been better ? Yes.

Could we have done without the few barely mentioned characters? Sure.

Could there have been more insight to the supporting roles? Definitely.

But the scares still scared.

I like to think that jump scares still have their place in the horror genre.

Personally if a movie doesn't make me jump or cower even a little or even go as far as making me talk to the screen like they can hear me.. then it's not scary enough for me.

All and all.... There are better scary movies out there but this one was not among the worst.

Standard, old fashioned scares.

It begins well with a suitably creepy opening with a zoom call between two girls, there is an ambient ' Silent Hill' small town vibe (and the town looks lush) which always appeals to me in any horror film.

Rather than the usual blood/gore this acts as a quiet sometimes reflective horror about dark past secrets. It reminded me of Ti West's ' The Innkeepers' and John Irvin's Ghost Story.

It has a few effective creepy scenes-the piano scene being one of them.

What lets it down is I couldn't take the character ' Isabel' looking way older than she is. She clearly looks mid 20s tops, so when he brother asks her how she is getting on at school I just laughed.

The scares, although well done, were signposted way too soon. The creepy doll (Mia lookalike!!) was put into frame once the camera panned either left or right and a movement by the ghost in the background was an ill judged piece of mis-direction.

The various POVs were unsubtle and added nothing to proceedings as a whole and the ' teenage' love interest was the usual tedious ' tick box' exercise so prevalent in movies nowadays- and they had zero chemistry.

It's one of those films that could have been better and shows how old I've become in seeing where and when the scares come along; however if either Elsie and Molly want a old fashioned ghost story I would recommend.

Familiar stuff, but still fun.

A town plagued by suicides; lights mysteriously turning on at night; a sinister figure appearing in the background; objects moving by themselves; a creepy mannequin named Martha: for what is essentially a series of well-worn horror clichés, 825 Forest Road is actually a surprisingly entertaining movie, Hellhouse LLC director Stephen Cognetti achieving an unsettling atmosphere and a couple of genuinely good jump scares.

The story is told in four chapters, one from the perspective of each of the three main characters - Chuck (Joe Falcone), his wife Maria (Elizabeth Vermilyea) and his younger sister Isabelle (Kathryn Miller), who have just moved from the city to the suburban town of Ashland Falls - and a final chapter which ties everything up.

Not long after moving in, the new arrivals begin to experience strange, inexplicable, and terrifying occurrences and learn that the town harbours a dark secret; the only way to stop the horror is to find the home of Helen Foster, a resident of Ashland Falls who committed suicide years ago, and burn the property to the ground.

The pace is gradual, and the repetition of events from different points of view may prove tedious for some, but the whole thing builds to a satisfying final act that definitely delivers the goosebumps and a few decent surprises. Admittedly, the style and execution doesn't exactly scream innovation, but if it's an hour and a half of spooky fun that you're after, you could still do a lot worse than this.

6.5/10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb.

Watched the first 55 minutes of it, just couldn't finished the film is that bad but the cinematography was shot very well.

825 Forest Road is unfortunately a step in the wrong direction for Stephen Cognetti. All "mood" and very little in the way of scares, this film is fairly boring, contains sub-standard acting/ writing, and most importantly, is not fun to watch. The best part of the film is the cinematography it is very well shot. A real convoluted drag of a horror movie. I would like to see Cognetti tackle a subject that doesn't involve mannequins coming to life in some way lol. An odd niche he's carved out for himself to say the least. Also, leave the chapter headings for a story that earns that injection of novelization. Why did we had separation chapter 1 through 4 just don't add chapters because is the same scenes we'd watched.

Creepy indie film, worth a watch!

Creepy indie film. Kind of an abrupt ending without much explanation, but you still get the overall idea and plot. This director creeped me out with the "Hell House LLC" movies when they were released, but this didn't really live up to that creepiness, but still worth a watch!

The movie has a new refreshing buildup method, and it gives you new perspectives that you don't see in a horror movie very often. I thought this way of telling a story was good and also entertaining.

The bad reviews are just people wanting some high budget horror with known/ famous actors. Sooo if you find yourself liking indie horror, then watch this!

Not for me

I had high hopes for this one since Hell House is one of the very few movies I find to be actually frightening. Sadly, this wasn't for me. The narrative is oddly put together, and not in a clever way whatsoever. I still can't figure out why that particular choice was made. The acting was subpar and I was acutely aware I was watching people act on my tv instead of becoming immersed in the story. I felt there was a major lack of authentic character development and I did not care about any of them at all. Most importantly, it dragged on and was not even close to measuring up in the scares department.

Much better than other reviewers would make you think

This movie is told in chapters that get to a certain point, then retold from a different person's point of view to get to that same point in the plot.

If you don't like horror movies, you likely won't like this because it will scare the crap out of you! If you can watch the movie with undivided attention, you'll see that it happens over a very short span of time, explaining the lack of communication of strange events between the characters.

The story is a pretty cool twist on a reason that the ghost is haunting a town, so somewhat original. There are many legit spine-tingling moments and a few underwear-dirtying moments, which is why we watch horror movies, right?

I normally don't write reviews, only if I really love or hate something. I loved this movie and would highly recommend you watch it with someone that can get of his/her phone and actually pay attention to the creepfest that this movie is.

Flawed but fun horror movie

825 Forest Road could have been a great horror movie with a few more script re-writes. There are a handful of great scares, and interesting relationships between the three main characters. You can expect that the creators of Hell House made the most out of the mannequin in this film. Unfortunately, the script also suffers from some significant flaws. For instance, there are only about four characters in the story who actually matter. Many of the side characters could have easily been written out of the story. The Gardening Club, realtor, and the opening scene characters didn't serve a relevant purpose. There are also often times when the writing makes basic story elements confusing. As an example, It took me awhile to realize that Ashley and Isabel were different characters. Finally and most importantly, the ending leaves a lot to be desired. Despite these flaws, I would recommend watching 825 Forest Road. Just don't expect the next Shining, or even the next Insidious.

I Was Scared...That I'd Fall Asleep!

I didn't finish the movie...and the 80% of it that I watched, I did it over two sittings!

I very rarely do that!

The movie is as boring as watching snails race, sweet Jesus!!!

The amount of never-ending dialogue between two people, mostly about their feelings (the best I can tell as I couldn't really focus) is abysmal!

There was pretty much just one location, the house, and, as I just mentioned, 99% of what was happening in it was the painfully boring, wooden dialogue that seemed to go on forever.

And the movie makes you watch the same damn moments from multiple points of view, to top it all off!!!

Right, that's enough from me. Two stars is generous as it is.

Meh...

I had the chance to sit down and watch the 2025 horror movie "825 Forest Road", and of course I opted to do so on account of it being a horror movie that I had neither seen nor actually heard about. And given my love of all things horror, then I needed no persuasion to check out what writer and director Stephen Cognetti had to offer.

The movie starts out well enough, but sort of hits a brick wall about shortly after halfway through, and it never recovers. So I can't claim that writer Stephen Cognetti delivered a particularly entertaining movie, much less a scary movie.

While I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, I will say that the cast ensemble in the movie was good, and the actors and actresses put on good performances to bring the story and characters to life on the screen, despite of not having a particularly thrilling script to work with.

"825 Forest Road" was not a movie that was rich in special effects. So don't get your hopes up.

It is a nicely filmed movie. The cinematography is rather good, and definitely helped to make it somewhat bearable to sit through 101 minutes of this.

My rating of writer and director Stephen Cognetti's 2025 movie "825 Forest Road" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Director tried directing a narrative like a found-footage movie.

This director was CLEARLY trying to capitalize off his Hell House LLC success but found-footage movies are not the same as genuine, narrative movies. So the writing in this is extremely bad and everything is rushed.

The opening scene was so subpar I was honestly thinking a friend was knocking on the girl's door and playing a trick on her, ready to jump out. That was the vibe I was picking up. So when it turned out it was nobody there but the mannequin, I was unimpressed. It just built no tensions at all.

Also, all he did was replace the creepy clown with a less creepy woman mannequin, that also moves around on its own. Same exact concept.

This writer/director assumes he can just keep doing the same formula, with small changed details and get the same outcome. But this is the world of movies now. No heart, no passion, no ambition. Just mediocre filmmakers who want to shock quickly and never learn how to move an audience through emotions.

I so miss the greats: Craven, Romero, Hooper, Gordon, etc. They were genuine storytellers and bled for their art. Now we have people who just think making movies is fun because it's a bit easier and faster now. Easy does not make better.

PLEASE READ ALL BELOW. This movie had potential...

I love horror films. But I'm really picky when it comes to enjoying a scary movie. Getting creeped out, heart jumping, on the edge of my seat type of supernatural horror film is always a searching headache. Looking for a diamond in the ruff. So, here below is a small list of horror films that I enjoyed getting creeped out by, & if my list is similar to your taste in scary movie faves then continue on reading for my review for this film. (P. S. This list are films that made me feel creeped out when watching it for the 1st time in the dark!) 1. The Woman in Black (6/10) *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 2. Hell House LLC 1-4 (#1-3 "4/10" #4 "5/10") *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 3. Insidious 1 & 2 & 4 (Only) (#1 & 2 "6/10" #4 "4/10") 4. The Conjuring 1 & 2 (Only) (#1 "6/10" #2 "5/10") *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 5. Polaroid (5/10) *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 6. Lights Out (5/10) *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 7. Host (4/10) *Best watched late at night by yourself!* 8. White Noise (4/10) 9. The Unholy (4/10) 10. Halloween 1 & 2 (5/10)

Slow paced film to be sure.

The scenes that tip toe slowly, getting "us" the "audience" ready to be creeped out, were more creepingly effective than the parts that kinda show Helen Foster clearly upclose & "freaky-deaky" looking. & the fact the entire film itself felt like it was being dragged out slowly, doesn't matter to me at least. The story definitely grabbed my attention & kept it, which is good obviously. Though none of the cast were the perfect fit for these characters. All but 1 I didn't recognize & their acting skills just weren't believable. But even so, I could still continue watching without being to bothered by their poor acting skills. The music for this film was weak in my opinion. Sure yeah it did its job by getting me ready to see a scary scene, I just think the music effects needed a little more umph to it.

Please don't get discouraged or confused by my rating of 4/10 for this film. As I said above, I'm very picky. Let's just say on here (IMDb) I've rated nearly 2,000 movies, & more than half of them are rated 4/10. There isn't a movie that deserves a rating of 10/10 or even 9/10. So movies I give 4/10 really means is that I enjoyed it, that I would rewatch again & I would recommend it to a friend.

So if you find yourself agreeing with everything I've written, then you may be interested in this movie. But I warn you, the ending is definitely unsatisfying & why they chose to do it like that is beyond me... & A great deal was left unexplained.

Had very Scary Parts

This movie was pretty slow moving and developing also not the best acting, but boy oh boy the scary scenes were very scary. It was pretty difficult to stay with due to slow development, but once it got going I was happy I stuck it out.

I would have to recommend this movie fir a time you are looking for a scary movie that has a new fresh approach to haunted house and human possession.

The movie is eerie and has some good jump scares. Not for the faint of heart.

I was between a rating of 6 and 7. I would have given a higher score if the acting was better and if the story moved along quicker..

So bad, I forgot it and had to rewatch the trailer to write this review

This is one of those movies that you forget as soon as the credits started rolling, because that's exactly what happened to me. I only kept the movie on because of the actor who played the husband/brother (a purely superficial and shallow reason) and although he is a good actor, he still couldn't save this film. But so much of the movie was utter nonsense, and not much of it was even remotely interesting, that the few scares the movie had were so few and far between as to be entirely negligible.

I honestly forgot everything that transpired in this film and had to rewatch the trailer to remember why I disliked it. There is nothing about this movie worth recommending and I implore you all to skip this movie and do literally anything else with your time.

A few decent scares can't save this hollow horror tale

In Stephen Cognetti's newest horror movie, 825 Forest Road, we follow a man named Chuck who hopes to start a new life with his wife Maria and his younger sister Isabelle after a tragic family incident. But of course, everything takes a turn for the worse when they discover the town harbors a dark secret.

The premise itself sounds really stereotypical and dull, and since we see dozens of movies like this every year, I wasn't particularly excited. I really enjoyed the first Hell House LLC, and the rest of the franchise had some decent entries, which gave me a bit of hope that this film might at least take a tired trope and inject it with some unique and fun ideas.

Sadly, the story doesn't deliver at all. It relies on cardboard characters and overused tropes that most horror fans are more than familiar with. The movie's strength, and also Cognetti's is in its scary moments and the slow build-up of tension. There are a few instances where the atmosphere is gradually intensified until we're hit with a jump scare. The jump scares themselves aren't terrible, but they're not particularly well executed either. Most of them are decently built up, and the film does offer some creepy ideas for scaring the viewer.

The movie also features a mannequin, which seems to be Cognetti's thing, considering how prominent they were in the Hell House LLC franchise. Honestly, I don't even mind that, if the scare works, it works. But unfortunately, aside from a few tension-filled moments and decent scare concepts, the movie doesn't have much else to offer. The acting is rather poor, the characters are bland, and the story as a whole is uninspiring.

It's not a complete mess, but it definitely doesn't stand out among the sea of horror movies released each year. I can't explicitly recommend it, but if you're one of those horror fans who digs through the bottom of the barrel looking for something to watch (like me), this might still be enough to entertain you for a bit. I jumped a few times

I definitely did not expect to like this movie. It starts off like many the other stories/movies/series we have all seen but we usually lose interest after the first fifteen or so. The storyline is very similar to many others I have seen. But I decided to give it a chance. I was just in the mood to get my adrenaline pumping for tonite. To be honest.... there were a few times that I got creeped out while watching this movie. Good thing I have my cat here to protect me, hahahaha.......

The best part was the END. My adrenaline is still PUMPING!!!! Now I gotta look another scary movie for tonite.

If Your High School Self Wrote a Horror Movie

825 Forest Road tries very hard to be mature and adult, but it comes across as stilted and sophomoric at every turn. The creators surely wanted to tell a story that had more depth and intensity than a run-of-the-mill slasher about shallow people partying or camping in the woods. However, they lacked the skill as a writer to come up with something that doesn't feel like Lifetime: Television for Women.

There are family traumas, grief, hauntings and unexplained events. I almost lean towards feeling sorry for whomever wrote this. But that's exactly what happened here, someone took pity on some rich nepo baby and their freshmen comp ghost story.
