It looks like Hollywood and movie theaters are going to have a lot to be thankful for very soon. That's because the Thanksgiving frame is shaping up to be an absolute juggernaut, with not one, not two, but three different films looking to sell a lot of tickets as we head into the holiday season, with Universal's musical "Wicked" and Paramount's long-awaited sequel "Gladiator II" leading the way. While the films couldn't be more different on paper, early box office tracking suggests they have something in common. Namely, general audiences are very interested in both of them.
"Wicked" is currently tracking for an opening weekend of $80 million or more domestically, while "Gladiator II" is eyeing an opening in the $65 million range, per early tracking numbers provided by Deadline. It's very early to start getting hyperbolic, but we could be looking at another Barbenheimer situation here. Last year, Greta Gerwig...

Greta Gerwig, the director of "Lady Bird" and "Barbie," has the chance to make a bit of Netflix history ... if she can get the streamer to budge a little on its theatrical release policy. Gerwig is set to direct at least two films in a Netflix adaptation of C.S. Lewis's fantasy novel series "The Chronicles of Narnia," and while that's a pretty big and potentially fun opportunity because those books are beloved and full of fantastic characters, Gerwig has been (politely) butting heads with the folks at Netflix over getting the films a theatrical release ever since she signed on.
Netflix announced that it had the rights and was planning to do something with the "Chronicles of Narnia" stories all the way back in 2018, but Gerwig jumping on was a game changer in terms of people's interest following the massive success of "Barbie." Now, Gerwig is trying to use...

The projections game for November’s U.S./Canada box office is easier than next Tuesday’s election. But after October results far off earlier predictions, some caution is advisable
This century before Covid, November always was a $1 billion or better grossing month, including some adjusted for current ticket prices. Last year’s November was an anemic $552 million.
The lineup this year includes three anticipated blockbusters that could play through Christmas — “Wicked” (Universal) and “Gladiator 2” (Paramount) opening November 22, and “Moana 2” (Disney) on November 27. Their release dates will mean half or more of their grosses could come later.
The just-ending October was expected to be the third consecutive month with improvements over 2023 results. Instead, October 2024 will fall close to 20 percent below last year’s.
That’s over $100 million less. The reason? Simple. Mostly because “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.) is ending up around $60 million. That’s below what...

It’s Halloween, and you know what that means: It’s the perfect time to watch horror movies. Vampires, serial killers, haunted houses, the month that precedes Halloween is the prime time to watch scary movies, but not every scary movie is a Halloween movie… and not every Halloween movie is scary.
So it is with great relish that we present the 31 best Halloween movies ever, exclusively featuring films that actually take place on Halloween, or at least during the Halloween season. The point is, if Halloween doesn’t play a major part in the movie it’s not fair to call it a “Halloween movie,” and as long as Halloween shows up in some important way, it doesn’t matter where the film is frightening, funny, or even just for little kids.
We’re narrowing the field down to theatrically released features and shorts and feature-length TV movies. Halloween specials deserve their own list,...

Will Aslan the lion prove to be the hero that convinces Netflix to soften its stance regarding theatrical and give Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series a run in some 2,000 cinemas globally?
Imax and Netflix are indeed in preliminary talks regarding Narnia, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. One plan being discussed is to release the event pic over Thanksgiving 2026 before making it available to its subscribers over Christmas. Whether that would be a long-enough window to satisfy theater circuits that operate Imax auditoriums is the big question, and the potential stumbling block.
Word of Gerwig’s campaign has reopened old wounds and sparked angst among both studios and the country’s top movie theater circuits.
Studios won’t be happy if Imax carves out time during the holiday season for a Netflix film that isn’t getting a traditional window, which has already...

2006’s The Barbie Diaries was one of my favorite Barbie movies ever, despite being derivative of everything of the era, especially Mean Girls. Watching Time Cut had me feeling the same way, but I suppose it didn’t evoke as much of a positive reaction as the other one, and I’ll tell you why. Time Cut follows Lucy, a high schooler whose sister was murdered before she was born. Lucy finds herself wondering what it would’ve been like with her sister alive, only to learn about it when she accidentally time travels to a few days before her sister’s death. Look, the premise is madly intriguing, and that’s also why it’s a difficult film to make. I found myself circling back to the idea of a “wholesome” slasher, a “feel good” horror. Doesn’t make sense at all, yet it makes complete sense, no? Netflix...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe certainly doesn't shy away from star-power. It's the biggest movie franchise in the world, so why would it? After all, it enhanced the careers of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo, while launching the careers of Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth.
It's also featured established cinematic titans like Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Michael Keaton, and Ben Kingsley, and more. In recent years, Angelina Jolie and Christian Bale have even joined the fray, showcasing that the franchise is still capable of drawing big names even with the conclusion of its record-breaking Infinity Saga. If you need more proof of that, look no further than next year's Captain America: Brave New World, which will see Harrison Ford make his MCU debut, stepping into the role of President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross after the death of the late, great William Hurt.

Back in 2018, Netflix and the C.S. Lewis Company reached a multi-year deal to adapt all seven Chronicles of Narnia books as movies. Then, in 2022, it was revealed that Greta Gerwig — the director behind mega-blockbuster Barbie — had signed on to helm at least two of those films. But other than that, we don't know much more about the upcoming Narnia reboot.
Netflix has not been in any rush to push out a new string of Narnia films. The streamer has plenty of family-friendly fantasy movies and shows in its catalog to pass the time, such as Damsel and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Narnia movies are still in the early days of development, and nobody has been cast yet. Several names are being rumored, such as Louis Partridge and Saoirse Ronan.
As for right now, before production has even started, Greta Gerwig is reportedly still figuring out the logistics of how to release the movies.

Movies based on video games haven’t had the best track record, lest we forget the Street Fighter disaster of 1994. But that may be changing.
The recent Chris Pratt Insults Italian-Americans (aka The Super Mario Bros. Movie) made over a billion dollars at the global box office. And the HBO series The Last of Us, proved that video games could inspire critically-acclaimed dramatic works that in no way involve talking hedgehogs or raiding tombs.
So it’s no surprise that there are more video game movies coming down the pike. There’s a Legend of Zelda project in the works, and before that, we’ll be getting the vomitous CGI onslaught known as Minecraft. At least Jason Momoa’s stylist seemed to be having fun.

Now this trend is going to even stranger places, as evidenced by the announcement that Apple is developing a movie based on The Oregon Trail.

An upsurge in directors starring in their own movies has seen mixed results. Lake Bell, Elia Suleiman and Viggo Mortensen explain the perks and pitfalls of being on both sides of the camera
Since the very first directorial cameos – George Méliès’ sorcerer-like appearances in The Vanishing Lady and Playing Cards in the 1890s – directors have often been unable to resist being in front of, as well as behind, the camera.” M Night Shyamalan, a film-maker notoriously eager to appear in his own work speaks for all these frustrated thespians: “It’s important for me to be a part of the film in some way […] I would love to play the lead role, but it’s physically impossible.”
An ever-growing league of multi-hyphenate actor-directors have, however, been proving Shyamalan wrong. Aside from the obvious heavyweights in 20th-century cinema who juggled on and off-camera personae, the past decade has seen a staggering...

Netflix’s aversion to big cinema releases is said to be causing friction with filmmakers – and so its Narnia film may now head to IMAX.
Here’s an interesting morsel of news that has emerged concerning the reported friction between Barbie director Greta Gerwig and streaming giant Netflix.
Gerwig has signed up to direct two Narnia films for Netflix, formalising the agreement before Barbie hit cinemas last year and became a cultural phenomenon. Barbie's success in turn rocketed Gerwig’s stock in Hollywood, giving the filmmaker more creative options than she’s ever enjoyed before.
However, because she’d already signed a deal with Netflix to make the two Narnia films before Barbie’s huge success, Gerwig doesn’t really have the opportunity to exercise her newfound cachet. When she has talked publicly about making the Narnia films, she’s expressed a fair amount of trepidation too, admitting that the...

The Israeli Film Festival is returning to Los Angeles after a multi-year hiatus.
The 36th edition of the fest arrives over one year into the Israel-Hamas War that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and hurled the country into an existential crisis, while also stoking anti-Israel and antisemitic sentiment around the world.
Despite the unprecedented hurdles, festival organizers feel the time is right to remount the event.
“Although this year has presented significant challenges for Israel as well as the Jewish and Israeli communities worldwide, we decided to move forward with the festival after postponing it for two-and-a-half years,” Meir Fenigstein, the fest’s founder and executive director, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

If Barbie pink was the color of summer 2023 and slime green the shade of 2024’s Brat Summer, then it only makes sense that Wicked Green usher in fall 2024.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, in the long-awaited film adaptation, set to release next month. And Universal isn’t wasting any time marketing the film with as much fervor as Warner Bros. did Greta Gerwig’s cotton candy-hued “Barbie.”

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the critically acclaimed Italian box office smash There’s Still Tomorrow (C’è Ancora Domani). It will release in select theaters beginning January 17.
From multi-hyphenate Paola Cortellesi, the women’s rights drama released in October 2023 in its home market, going on to become the most watched film of the year there, outperforming both Hollywood blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer. With a box office north of $36M, it is Italy’s fifth highest grossing film of all time, the third best local performance in the last decade and the most successful Italian film directed by a woman. It’s also Cortellesi’s feature helming debut.
Set in post-war 1940s Rome, There’s Still Tomorrow tells the story of Delia (Cortellesi), a working-class wife and mother trapped in a toxic marriage. American GI’s still patrol the streets, but change is in the air.

Get ready to analyze another data point about awards season.
On Tuesday, nominees for the 2024 Gotham Awards will be announced beginning at noon Et.
In a press release, the Gotham Film & Media Institute called its annual awards ceremony the “start of the annual awards season.” In terms of the awards calendar, that’s certainly true: the Gotham Awards take place on December 2, before even some major critics groups like the New York Film Critics Circle make their own choices.
Nominees for the Gotham Awards, now in its 34th year, “are selected by committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators.” To choose the winners, “Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in making films will determine the final Gotham Award recipients.”

Warner Bros. bot 80 Mio.

If you spent your younger years in the school computer lab constantly dying from snakebite, drowning, a broken leg, cholera, and, everyone’s favourite, dysentery, then you should be pumped (or perhaps horrified) about the new Oregon Trail movie. THR reports that Apple is developing a new movie based on the popular video game with Will Speck and Josh Gordan attached to direct and produce.
Sources say that the Oregon Trail movie will feature several original musical numbers in the vein of Barbie from Egot winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The project is still in early development, but Speck and Gordon first started working on it over two years ago. “We were talking about what we could cook up next, because we really want to do another musical,” Speck said. “[Pasek & Paul] mentioned [Oregon Trail], and we now have the rights to it, and we’re putting it together alongside them and some other exciting people.

Grab your wagons and oxen, and get ready to ford a river: A movie adaptation of the popular grade school computer game Oregon Trail is in development at Apple.
The studio landed the film pitch, still in early development, that has Will Speck and Josh Gordon attached to direct and produce. Egot winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will provide original music and produce via their Ampersand production banner. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the movie will feature a couple of original musical numbers in the vein of Barbie.
The Lucas Bros. (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Max Reisman are set to pen the screenplay about the game that is meant to mimic 19th-century pioneer times, following a covered wagon train heading west. Created in 1971, the game reached cult status among American grade schoolers by the 1990s as one of the first educational computer games allowed in schools...

Michael Cera and Emilia Jones are lacing up their shoes for The Running Man.
Both actors have closed deals to join Glen Powell in Paramount’s adaptation of the Stephen King story that is being directed by Edgar Wright. For Cera, the move reunites him with the filmmaker behind one of his beloved roles, that of romantic slacker Scott Pilgrim from 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) and Lee Pace are already on the call sheet for the feature that is due to shoot in London at the top of next year.
King’s Running Man, published in 1982 and written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was set in 2025 in an America under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses.

For today’s Gen-z kids, The Big Bang Theory and Friends might be some of the shows that they feel are iconic. But long back in the 80s, aired a show that changed the definition of sitcoms and grew a massive fan base across the US.
Yes, we are talking about NBC’s Cheers, which ran successfully from 1982 until its series finale in 1993. Critically acclaimed and loved by many during its original run, the series is one of the best sitcoms.
Cheers is hilarious, intelligent, fast-paced, heartfelt, peopled by unforgettable characters, and consistently good. The story revolves around a Boston bar, owned by Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former relief pitcher, and has several other main characters, who either work in the bar or visit it regularly.
Decades later after its final run, let’s take a look at where some of the Cheers‘ major cast members are now!

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the wide open Best Director race, where only two people feel somewhat secure.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Our weekly conversations have finally landed on what might be my favorite category of this entire race: Best Director. To be honest, I’m terribly vexed about the whole field — and not just because we got to see “Gladiator II” aka “Glad II ator” on Monday. Before we get to this year’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” let’s start at the top: According to the odds and most experts, “Anora” director Sean Baker and “The Brutalist” filmmaker Brady Corbet are the most likely to receive nominations in this category next year. I certainly believe it: Both films feel undeniable and both...

Warner Bros. wins bidding war for Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ by vowing theatrical release
It’s all about the theatrical experience. Warner Bros. has secured the rights to Academy Award winner Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, Deadline reports. The studio beat out Netflix in a competitive situation by committing to a global theatrical release for the film, which the streamer was unwilling to do.
Fennell, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2021 for “Promising Young Woman,” is writing, directing, and producing the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s timeless 1847 novel. Robbie will star and produce through her company LuckyChap, along with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara. LuckyChap also produced Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn,” and Fennell appeared in “Barbie” alongside Robbie as Barbie’s friend Midge. It’s also a reunion with Fennell’s “Saltburn” star Elordi. The film is financed by MRC, who brought the package to market.

Simu Liu has received a massive wave of support following his stint as the guest venture capitalist on this year’s Dragons’ Den following his stance on Bobba. Given how dear boba or bubble tea is to Liu’s heritage, the actor called out Sebastien Fiset and Jess Frenette’s business venture over its cultural appropriation.

But despite refusing to join forces with Bobba, it seems, the actor is indeed jumping on the boba tea landscape, as he has shown interest in investing in another bubble tea start-up.

After making history together with “Barbie,” Margot Robbie and Warner Bros. are at it again. The LuckyChap producer and star is set to lead frequent collaborator Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” which is now officially a Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group title. IndieWire can confirm that the studio won MRC’s highly-anticipated feature after what we’re told was “a fierce bidding war.”
As previously announced, MRC is the studio financing the film, with Robbie’s LuckyChap producing. Fennell’s “Saltburn” star Jacob Elordi is playing the iconic Heathcliff.
The film is now in pre-production, with UK shoot set for 2025. Writer/director Fennell already teased the project with an Instagram post featuring the title and the tagline “Be with me always.

The first season of Lioness had serious star power but fizzled out quickly. While Zoe Saldaña commands the screen, big names like Morgan Freeman and Nicole Kidman are heavily touted. However, the two Academy Award-winning actors barely had enough screen time compared to an alum from the game show Wipeout.
That said, I love Jillian Wagner, who is utterly convincing as a kick-ass Black Ops soldier, so that’s not the issue. This season is different. Saldaña simply electrifies in her role as a CIA officer in charge. However, now she has a cast with enough screen time to match her intensity.
Sparks fly alongside Kidman, Freeman, and The Penguin’s Michael Kelly. Series creator Taylor Sheridan crafts dialogue that cuts like verbal daggers across an expensive government conference room table. The stakes are higher, the tension is palpable, and Lioness is even better the second time around.

Barbenheimer was an unprecedented cultural event. Born from two vastly different movies marketed at different audiences, with zero things in common other than a release date and the fact that they had big budgets, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" somehow inspired a totally organic, fan-driven "crossover." Granted, it was never really a proper crossover, and neither film's marketing campaigns acknowledged the other's, but fans didn't care. As much as the cultural conversation was aware, Barbenheimer was real, and it made both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" hugely successful at the box office.
Indeed, the fan-made double feature caught on, and soon enough thousands of people were planning to watch both halves of Barbenheimer back-to-back on release day, embracing each film as part of a whole rather than play into box office competition. But years before people coined the term Barbenheimer, and even years before another brilliant piece of counter programming made both "The Dark Knight...

Eva Mendes says she may consider acting again if the right role came along — as long as it involved working alongside her husband Ryan Gosling. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actress known for titles like The Place Beyond The Pines and Hitch opened up about the challenges she faced early in her career and what might bring her back to film roles.
While Mendes says she was “never in love with acting,” facing barriers like typecasting and ethnic bias made her determined to prove herself. “They would say ‘she’s too ethnic for this, too ethnic for that,'” Mendes recalled of casting calls in her early career. This “fueled” her to work harder. Although times changed and “being Latina became cool,” the obstacles stayed with Mendes.
The Cuban-American star stepped away from films nearly a decade ago to focus on raising her two daughters with Gosling.

Sometimes, celebrities clash in amusing ways. Jack Nicholson and Stanley Kubrick might be most widely known today for their work on The Shining. On one level, the two cinematic icons seemed to get along. But Nicholson once made Kubrick extremely upset when Nicholson left the production for a while for reasons that were less than honorable.
Why Jack Nicholson left the set of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’
During a 2016 interview with The Guardian, electrician Bob Tanswell discussed his experiences working on The Shining. “I’d heard of Stanley Kubrick but didn’t realize how special he was,” he said. “He’d do 150 takes of a simple scene.”
“One time, Jack said he had done his back in and needed a few days off,” Tanswell added. “That’s a lot of time when you’re shooting a big film, but Stanley said, ‘Ok.’ The next day, we were in the...

Eva Mendes says the only way that she could be convinced to return to acting is if it’s alongside her husband Ryan Gosling.
It’s been a decade since Mendes stepped away from acting. Her last role was a small part in Gosling’s feature directorial debut Lost River. The actress’ last credit, though, was lending her voice to a 2021 episode of Bluey.

Mendes says her best work was opposite Gosling in films like Lost River and The Place Beyond the Pines, which is the 2012 film where they first met.
“He gets something out of me that’s never been accessible before,” she said.

Not long after the Ryan Gosling starrer’s success, Mattel has officially announced its decision to come up with another series around a toy that has brought them great fortune over the years – Pingu.

Eva Mendes has been taking a lengthy break from acting, in case you haven't noticed. The star of movies like "Training Day," "Hitch," and "The Other Guys" has been on hiatus since her last project, "Lost River," released in 2014. So what would it take to get her back in front of the camera? It's pretty simple: let her work with her real-life partner Ryan Gosling again.
Mendes spoke to Laura Pullman at The Telegraph (she and Gosling are currently stationed in London while he films "Project Hail Mary") and revealed that she would definitely do another project with Gosling, even though she admitted that acting was never a great love for her. "I was never in love with acting," Mendes revealed. "I don't mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn't a great actress. I had my moments when I worked with really great people." Of Gosling, Mendes said,...

Tom Holland is joining Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s top-secret follow-up to his Best Picture Oscar winner “Oppenheimer,” which Universal will release on July 17, 2026.
The project adds to what is expected to be a busy 2025 for Holland after taking a one-year hiatus from acting. The British actor is expected to once again play Peter Parker in a fourth “Spider-Man” movie for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios as well as appear in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is set to begin production in London next year.
Universal declined to comment.
Through a combination of Nolan’s devoted global fanbase, universal acclaim, strong marketing from Universal and Imax, and an organic pop culture phenomenon spawned by its shared release date with “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” became the highest grossing biopic in box office history with $976 million grossed worldwide.

Eva Mendes would start off the new millennium with a breakthrough role alongside Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day. She would parlay that into a rising career with roles in films like 2 Fast 2 Furious, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Hitch and The Place Beyond the Pines. The latter film is where Ryan Gosling would enter her life and her priorities would eventually shift from her acting career to being a mother to her and Gosling’s family after tying the knot. Mendes has often been asked about unceremonious retirement, where she replies, “I got tired fighting for the good roles…There just was a point where I thought, ‘I’m going to create my own opportunities and become a producer on things and create my own material,’ but it just didn’t feel worth it to me.”

Barbie giant Mattel is teaming up with award-winning animation studio Aardman (Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Wallace & Gromit) to co-develop a new stop-motion, animated Pingu television series.
The series is inspired by Mattel’s beloved cheeky penguin who lives in the South Pole and has stayed on our screens for decades, famous for his mischief and catchphrase, “Noot Noot!” Designed by Otmar Gutmann in the 1980s, the show first aired on the U.K.’s BBC One in 1990.
Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer of Mattel, told The Hollywood Reporter at MIPCOM Cannes on Monday: “You couldn’t ask for a more perfect marriage [than between Mattel and Aardman]. I was just with their their team. We are overjoyed about the project. It’s going to be really, really special. Pingu just continues to, organically, have a tremendous amount of affection and attention. And a tremendous amount of relevance.”

Even though Deadpool and Wolverine is now available on Digital platforms and arrives on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, Marvel Studios brought the movie back to 1,500 theaters over the weekend, a move which paid off by nabbing the mega-popular superhero team-up the No. 12 spot on list of the highest-grossing films of all time at the domestic box office.
Marvel's first ever R-rated film took in an additional $636.3 million, taking it just past Barbie's $636.238 million. Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit comedy remains queen of the global box office, however, with $1.445 billion.
On the list of highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Deadpool and Wolverine comes in at 7, having recently overtaken Iron Man 3's ($1.215 billion) worldwide haul.
Marvel Studios hasn't officially announced a follow-up, but there are rumors that a direct sequel is in the early planning stages. Even if it doesn't come to pass, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will almost certainly return for Avengers: Secret Wars.

The last five years have been transformative for cinema, between the impact of Covid, the streaming revolution, and the rise of AI technology. Which is exactly why Empire decided to poll an array of top filmmakers in Hollywood – and beyond – on what exactly is going on in the industry, and what it all means for the movies. The result is a major new article – available to read in full in our Mickey 17 issue (order here).
One of the hottest topics is the encroachment of AI, with the industry still figuring out how it could, should – or should not – be used in moviemaking. “It is not creative,” says Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of The Woman King. “It just takes from others’ creativity.” Sofia Coppola – director of Priscilla and Lost In Translation – questions its capabilities beyond creating mere imagery: “It can be helpful, but I think you need a heart and soul to make art.
