Applause for Tope Oshin
flejklw24 March 2023
Saw the trailer for this on Netflix, read the synopsis but was reluctant due to the low ratings, but I was so pleased that I gave it a watch.

Storyline: girl living in Nigeria is ousted out of the family home has a teenager after falling pregnant. Later it shows " Amanda " 14 years later with her daughter, living and working has a travel blogger. She has been communicating with Michael romantically through social media with a chance they will meet up.

Finally Amanda travels to New York and meets up with Michael and they hit it off in more ways than one.

I think the plot to this is brilliant, I watched this in England so getting a view of Nigerian film to me was inspiring. The film from Amanda as a young girl to the end just seemed to flow.

I guess when you watch endless Hollywood, British, and European film its great when something has good has this comes along.

Even better when it stars, written and directed by the same lady 8/10.

We underestimated this film

When we watched the trailer, we were so disappointed as we knew it was going to be another one of those Nollywood lovey-dovey stories... Let's just say that Tope Oshin took us by surprise and outdid herself! We were amazedddd 🤓

DELICIOUS

-The storytelling was quite gripping, starting off with a peek into young Amanda then moving on to adult Amanda (Tope Oshin) The suspense was progressively built up and the mystery revelation even fooled us at the end

-Fantastic job by the makeup and costume design teams who worked hard to pull off stunning looks

-Who knew Tope Oshin could act??? Wow...She gave us classy madame, fragility, strict mommy, gentleness, weakness, and on top of that, there she went unapologetically threatening someone in Pidgin English on the streets of New York🙌

-The cinematography was impressive in Nigeria. There were great camera movements that teased us and accentuated the storytelling

-The editing, again another area that was really engaging

-Something that people may miss in this movie is the powerful underlying message it sent out with the writers intentionally calling us to observe and learn from Amanda

BLAND

-The scuffle toward the end was a bit weakly staged with many segments that left us in disbelief.

Plus, there was a noticeable difference between the film's quality in Nigeria and America

But these shortcomings can be overlooked due to the movie's strong script!

Really nice movie

Love the story! Not the conventional love movie. I could not have predicted what happened towards the end! There are also key lessons to be learnt; forgiveness, not trusting strangers without caution and the need for parents to support their children even when things don't go as planned to avoid ripple effect of such events.
