Strange in a good way
Cinefrancia30 January 2022
I would have given this film ten stars but it has too much curse words the f-word is almost said in every other sentence but other than that, I really loved this movie. It feels good to see a fresh great movie like this one come out in todays world of poorly written stupid movies. The color is beautiful and the sound is fantastic. Very different from today's junk. Highly recommend it but it's not for everyone, it's a bit too strange for the average joe. The director has the potential to grow a cult following if he keeps making films like this one. Can't wait to see more from the director who seems to be also the writer. Well done.

Great film

I really enjoyed this movie. I like the unique characters and the story flows well. A very psychological dark film - I recommend this movie for those who like dark films. It reminded me of donnie darko at times. The ending was strange.

Really good movie
Artificialsociety29 January 2022
One of my favorite movies is the Machinist. This one has a similar style. This is a psychological drama. I noticed some hidden messages like the number 555 all over the movie. The evil voice sounds creepy af and the puppet voice is even creepier. I wouldnt say its a scary movie its a disturbing film with a strong abuse message it touched some buttons for sure so if you have been abused as a child this may press some buttons so be warned. Overall a great film i really enjoyed it. The guy's voice at the end in the bus stop is sooooooo weird. All the voices of the characters in this film are very creepy. Such a strange film.

Johnny Is The New Era Of Terror
tenjor2 March 2022
Johnny can be considered the turning of a new page in this new era of horror cinema.

Johnny represents the dark and also human side of the ventriloquists without referencing others.

John Charles Gerald can be considered as a future promise for a Johnny universe, moreover, he can make a saga and I assure you that no slaher will be able to overshadow him.

Well done to the director and crew.

Long live Johnny.

Two simple words: Touching & insightful!
caritoac22 August 2023
Johnny was a great film... The cinematography was great and the sound as well! The characters are very well executed and the story flows slowly but steady. Floyd is a child abuse victim constantly being tormented by voices and hallucinations in his head that lead him to a talking puppet with answers to his abusive childhood. The film keeps you engaged in the darkness that surrounds the main character. Its a unique perspective on abuse crafted as an autobiography. As others stated, there are hidden messages and I did see a Donnie Darko and The Machinist fusion there somewhere. I like the fact that the puppet is not a possessed doll like in every other film with puppets in it. A very different approach to filmmaking with this kind of subject and characters. Its worth watching! Strange ending! Its possible the ending is a self interpreting type of end. I'd like to see more from Gerald!

Psychological dark film
niko-rodriguez22 August 2023
I really liked this movie because it's different from the rest of the puppet movies. Its not a scary movie it's a psychological dark film, for those who like that kind of films!

I really enjoyed it and it had me stuck to my seat all the way to the end although a slower pace for those of you who like fast paced films, then this may not be for you.

The cinematography like others have commented is great and the sound is impeccable. Nice, vibrant colors and really cool characters. I like the part where the puppet has a conversation with Floyd about the abuse. I was reading the directors bio, and it says this happened to him in real life. I highly recommend this film to those who like strange, dark movies with subtext.

There's a New Gun in Town....
singmysong44444 July 2022
I call 'em the Shooters. They take a Camera and go Gunning... and sometimes like with John Charles Gerald they build a solid reputation and a following based upon their new vision. Not only what they aim at but also how they aim... with attention to lighting and detail that marks the difference between a Rembrandt and a Pollack. Gerald is old school in the way of Beautiful Lighting and tone and texture... he's totally new wave in the way he tells a story. Get your popcorn and drinks early because you won't want to step out and miss a minute of this Writer, Director, Actor... telling his story. Some Shooters just get any gun and fire away... not John Charles Gerald... no he savors his Arri... Red and handles it like a Stradivarius. Always polished always detailed always immaculate and on top of that one hell of a story teller. Every scene is well planned and executed as if Gerald was working with Mega Budgets.... but no he creates his magic out of thin air straight from his multiplexed mind straight to film. Get yourself a front row seat and watch him Shoot... he does not disappoint. He does not miss. He hits bullseye after bullseye until you wonder is this guy for real. He is... very real and that is where he starts what he brings to film. But then he injects his superb cinemagraphic skills and you go with him totally somewhere else. Fasten your Seatbelts... "heeres Johnny !!!" Also for those of you who go by... "If you like that then you're gonna like this".... how about Donnie Darko on Steroids... ? Thats how I'd summarize "Johnny"....

Experimental Psychological Slow-Burn
meggietenser4 July 2022
Beautiful cinematography throughout this experimental-esque psychological slow-burn. The filmmaker creates complex characters through essence, behavior, and action more than dialogue. Dialogue comes through sparingly but strong enough at the end to pull everything together with so many strings you never saw hanging there. Emotionally grating in a beautiful way, the slow creeping barrels to an explosive ending that illuminates the true complexities of the main character, Johnny. A great watch in character exploration and cinematography!
