Out of all the classic monsters that pop up in costume shops around the Halloween season, there’s one that I believe has always been criminally underused in scary movies. Unlike witches, vampires and undead ghouls, the lowly Scarecrow is usually relegated to the background of mainstream horror media despite serving as an instantly recognizable (and genuinely eerie) harbinger of Autumn.
That’s not to say that we haven’t seen memorable examples of these ever-watching fiends in scary movies before – I just wish that there were more of them! And now that we’re fast approaching the spookiest night of the year, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the scariest scarecrows in horror films in the hopes that future filmmakers will make use of this underrated monster.

Tagline: "It's Summer Camp. What Did You Expect?" A trailer for You Might be the Killer released this week. The film focuses on character Sam, after he wakes up next to a pile of bodies. He wonders what happened. But, he also wonders if he might be a murderer. A meta look at the slasher film genre, this horror comedy also stars Alyson Hannigan, from "Buffy the Vampire Killer" fame. Directed by Brett Simmons, this is the first script from writer Covis Berzyone to be put to screen. Now, You Might be the Killer is available on Shudder, for fans of horror. You Might be the Killer premiered earlier this year. This title showed at Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas. As well, the film was part of the After Dark Film Festival, in Toronto. You Might be the Killer may have been snubbed at the awards ceremonies. However, the film...

Tagline: "Death is Watching." A few details are emerging from the cornfields for Curse of the Scarecrow. In the vein of Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Husk (2011), Sheldon Wilson's Scarecrow (2013) - Curse of the Scarecrow takes place after a tragedy. June and Carl have seen their parents killed, at an early age. Determined to find their killers, June returns to her family home, only to find the grounds haunted by a murderous scarecrow. This title, from director Louisa Warren, stars: Kate Lister and Cassandra French. Several stills and an early concept poster are hosted here. There are two synopses for the film. The shorter one mentions that June and Carl return to a family farm, twenty years after their parent's death. Not long after, Carl mysteriously commits suicide. In the longer synopsis, the scarecrow is waging a cornstalk filled war, on an entire town. The crows fly in this film!

Well. This is an unexpected surprise. Chiller TV's second Chilling Visions anthology 5 States of Fear, the follow-up to last year's 5 Senses of Fear, shows a remarkable improvement in the quality of filmmaking and storytelling. Any preconceived notions I had before watching this anthology, no doubt set by the lackluster 5 Senses last year, were quickly dismissed by the time I was into the second short. The idea behind the anthology series is that each short is based on a human fear. This time around the fears are Ego Death, Separation, Mutilation, Extinction and Loss of Autonomy. Sandy, by Brett Simmons (Husk and Monkey's Paw) is the quickest of all the shorts. An unfaithful husband's past comes back to exact revenge upon him. It may be...

Unfortunately, I live in one of those areas of the United States that is slow to pick up channels like Chiller, FearNet and even Robert Rodriguez’s new network El Rey. One carrier might carry the network or maybe every carrier except for mine. Regardless, Scream Factory – the best in the business in genre home entertainment – is eliminating the obstacle of seeing Chiller’s original content by bringing last year’s The Monkey’s Paw to Blu-Ray & DVD. The film is directed by Brett Simmons (Husk) and has a screenplay by Macon Blair (who is amazing in Blue Ruin but you’ve seen his acting abilities in Murder Party and, more recently, Hellbenders) based off of W.W. Jacobs’ original short story. We have the full details on when you can get your paws on The Monkey’s Paw.

Jake must then decide what to use his third wish for all the while dealing with the manipulative Tony, who tries to take the wish for his own purposes. Also stars Charles S. Dutton, Corbin Bleu (really?!?) and Michelle Pierce.

Tomorrow, Remnants (trailer) will make its world debut at the Film4 Frightfest in UK.
Directed by Peter Engert, this somber reflection of a post-apocalyptic America stars C.J. Thomason, Monica Keena, Edward Furlong and Andre Royo.
Shock had the pleasure of reconnecting with Thomason recently to discuss his time on the film. We first met this actor a few years back at the premiere of Brett Simmons' Husk, in which Thomason plays a man who must contend with a supernatural force at a farmhouse (you may have also spotted him in the "body count" TV series Harper's Island).
In Remnants, he plays Hunter, a young doctor who survives a nuclear attack and, with other survivors, holes up in a basement to ride things out. But waiting for help to arrive proves difficult as hunger and radiation sickness begin to seep in.

A group of friends are on their way to a lake house vacation spot when their car crashes. Stranded, they spot a lone house sitting in the middle of Nowheres Cornfield USA. Scarecrows can be pretty damn creepy. Creepy enough that there is kind of a sub-genre of killer scarecrow movies. Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Night of the Scarecrow (1995), Scarecrows (1988), even scarecrow episodes from horror based series like Friday the 13th: The Series and Supernatural. They were built and designed to be scary.
After Dark Films brings us Husk as part of this years After Dark Originals. The story is about 5 friends on a road trip when an accident leaves them stranded on a lonesome highway next to an unending cornfield, in which lurks something evil. Oh… and there is an abandoned farm house. Sound familiar? It should, it’s a pretty common set-up. But that’s all it is, a setup. A starting point for a story. Where it goes from there is the meat and potatoes. From this point on, Husk shines.

After Dark Films, the company behind 8 Films to Die For that has churned out an ambitious docket of horror films since starting up in 2005, have found a winner with Brett Simmons’s Husk. Sure the formula is the same, but when done right, young people in peril never gets old. After a gory run-in with a flock of crows, the group enters a corn maze that’s home to all kinds of nasty in the form of scarecrows. "The Resident" (2011)
Directed by Antti Jokinen
Released by Image Entertainment
This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.
"The Mikado" (1939)
Directed by Victor Schertzinger
Released by Criterion Collection
"Topsy-Turvy" (1999)
Directed by Mike Leigh
Released by Criterion Collection
Sold separately, Criterion is making no secret of trying to appeal to Gilbert and Sullivan fanatics with special editions of "The Mikado," a straight-up adaptation of the musical duo's most famous opera, and Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy,...

It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.
The film also stars Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Chicago, you can participate in the Black Swan Experience on April 2nd.
Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. Bring home the franchise created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson that gave the horror genre a booster shot back in the mid 1990s. A trio from the original cast -- Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- will be gracing the big screens with a whole new cast soon enough.

Chicago – Stalled cars, prophetic visions, fresh meat in need of tenderizing, and off-handed expulsions of the dreaded line, “I’ll be right back.” These are merely a handful of the timeworn elements utilized by two new direct-to-video releases from After Dark Films. Both pictures are competently made and well acted, which makes their lack of originality all the more depressing.
Brett Simmons’s “Husk” and Patrik Syversen’s “Prowl” are billed as titles in the After Dark Originals series, the collection of horror films financed and produced solely by After Dark Films, which seems hellbent on providing even more content for FearNet OnDemand. They’re the sort of films I tend to watch during a bout of insomnia. Throw one of these diverting yet disposable flicks on the screen, and you’re guaranteed to fall asleep in no time.

Husk
Stars: C.J. Thomason, Devon Graye, Wes Chatham, Tammin Sursok, Ben Easter | Written and Directed by Brett Simmons
The first of this years eight After Dark Originals to hit DVD in the UK, Husk follows five friends who, following a mysterious accident involving a ton of dead crows, become stranded out in the middle of nowhere (don’t they always?). Finding shelter in an abandoned farmhouse in the middle of a desolate cornfield, the friends soon discover that not everything is what it seems and that the cornfields are not as desolate as they thought.
Starring a group of unknowns (well unknown to most, Sursok will no doubt be familiar to soap opera fans), Husk is the latest in what is now a long line of Scarecrow-based fear flicks and much like those movies that proceeded it, the film mixes traditional slasher movie conventions with a more supernatural edge. However...

According to the Oxford Dictionary, a husk is 'the dry outer covering of some fruits or seeds'. According to the Idiot's Guide to Writing About Film, opening your article with a quote from the dictionary is a sin for which the only acceptable penance is 20 whacks to the kneecaps with a cricket bat. That point of order resolved, let's move on to Husk, and my interview with its director, Brett Simmons.

Husk is a chilling-feature from the After Dark Originals brand, coming to DVD & Blu-ray 21st of March after screening at the first ever UK After Dark Original: Horrorfest Weekend earlier this month.
Starring Wes Chatham (W.) and C.J Thomason (Harper’s Island), and directed by Brett Simmons who has adapted the film from his own 2005 short, Husk is a gruesome tale and a real throwback to true 1960s creepiness.

Director/writer: Brett Simmons.
Husk was originally a five minute short from director Brett Simmons in 2005. This title was re-worked into a full feature with help from After Dark Films. This film was released into theatres January 28th and recently, there have been a couple showings of Husk on the SyFy Network. Now, 28Dla.com finds itself lost in the cornfields and this is a where a horror fan wants to be.
Being lost in the corn creates tension, because five twenty-somethings find themselves fending off pitchfork attacks, kamikaze crows and masked scarecrows. The action is quick to begin and soon, a mythos is developed of a murdering brother in the corn rows. The psalm Genesis 4:11 will clue viewers in to the Cain and Abel story of curses, while the characters run for their soon to be ended lives in never ending stalks of corn.

Husk, directed by Brett Simmons and based on his short film of the same name, follows five friends on a road trip who become trapped in an abandoned farmhouse when the vehicle they're in crashes. The group finds that their friend Johnny (Ben Easter) is missing and they assume he has gone into the cornfields to try to find some help....
Scott (Devon Graye) and Brian (Wes Chatham) head out to find him and come across a scarecrow that Scott says the farmers use to navigate their way through the cornfields. Using the scarecrow, Scott manages to find a farmhouse with a light on.
Back at the crash site, Chris (C.J. Thomason) and Natalie (Tammin Sursok) are waiting for their friends to return when Natalie sees a young boy standing near the cornfield. She goes to check it out but as she gets closer the boy runs into the fields.

Looks like only six of the eight After Dark Originals announced thus far will be headed to theatres later this month. This is totally fine by us because why not spread the red out a little bit?
Instead of tapping into the vast and innovative talent of directors and filmmakers from Horrorfest’s acquisitions over the past four years, After Dark has taken the horror festival concept to a higher level. After Dark Originals showcases eight new cutting edge horror films spanning the genre. The mission is to create high quality horror films that provide After Dark full control from script concept through final editing. The After Dark Originals line will be in limited theaters starting on January 28th, 2011.
