It turned Idiotic
kb-636831 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie started off well. Had a pregnant girl confined to a house so an executive could have all rights to child. The lady overseeing the girl didn't even ask for much from the girl, but eventually the girl turned completely irrational and felt like she was enslaved for no reason. I think the lady was reasonable and even kind, so the girl's immaturity and irrationality was all the more irritating. I don't know if they're saying being pregnant whacks out your emotions and hormones so completely that you make stupid choices, don't know. Makes the ending all the more dissatisfying. Could have turned this into any number of artistic directions. I have no idea what the story was trying to say, and I must say it turned to an idiotic predictable direction for no reason when there was so much more that could have been done with it. There was also no indication that the executive was going to murder the girl when the baby was birthed, I'm pretty sure that idea came out of nowhere and into the head of the girl. The executive does murder near the end, but it almost seems out of character. The girl had an extremely flat affect as well, first her personality was driven go-geter cutthroat girl then it turned into lifeless drama queen; not consistent at all, even from scene to scene.

It started pretty good though
broman-294292 September 2022
It is incredible how one movie can radically change from being good, well directed, strong characters, personalities, even intriguing to absolutely none sense, the ending made no sense at all, to the point that I really don't know what the writer was trying to say, but it felt offensive to women, we are just irrational people, crazy hormonal and irrational. The plot was a bit ambiguous too it has some undeveloped subjects, it has some scenes that don't go anywhere. But aside all this, I think it's worth your time watching this film because the acting is good and the production, they just lose it at the end, you end up scratching your head and thinking what the hell just happened?

started off good enough
LetsReviewThat262 September 2022
But that's when the cracks emerge. The way I see this film is like a spanish remake of the devil wears Prada, but with some thriller thrown in for good measure. It starts off pretty good and you see this young aspiring woman good to a job interview. Her boss seems off immediatly and her boyfriend is as horny as a rabbit. I enjoyed the cast and they were fine enough. The plot was ok but failed in the second half of this and felt like a stodgy mess of pieces that didn't go anywhere. If there was just something more that couldve made it more interesting then it would have been foundOverall another netlflix movie that fails in its execution but with an enjoyable cast for the most part.

I didn't like Sofia
bitnicat4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A terrible movie, And this Sofia is simply a catastrophe, A liar, Ungrateful, Paranoid, Crazy, Violent and doesn't know what she wants from her life. No one forced her to sign the agreement with her boss, she did it completely of her own free will, including all the terms of the contract. And everything that happened to her was mostly her fault.

In fact, this film had a lot of potential to be a good film, but its screenwriters missed the potential and made the film terrible, especially in the second part, because the first part gives the feeling that it is a good and interesting film, but the second part just ruins it, which is a shame.

Boring, predictable, nothing original
gustheaffen1 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We've all seen this type of thriller a thousand times and this one is no different and follows a standard formula. It is a long movie too - almost 2 hours. There really is no twist or surprise ending. It started out promising and went the standard route. Add in all the irrational decisions, the minute anyone locks you out of the world a sane person would realize it was time to get out. But in these types of movies that never happens and hence the two hour BOREfest. The best part of the movie is the scenery. None of the characters are very appealing with the exception of the BF who is the only one with any integrity so you can guess how his character arc goes.

A great start spoiled entirely
Estie8885 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It started out good. It was interesting, the characters were mysterious, the motivation for both mains was there.

Then Sofia moves to Beatriz and the madness begins. You cannot understand what her problem is. She never says she wants out, and even when offered an opportunity to leave, she stays. She acts as if she was forced, hurt or enslaved by Beatriz, while none of that is true.

At the end, she ends up a robber and murderer. I nearly lost it when she actually yelled out "I don't know what I want!" - do you really want your main character be that dumb and evil?

The summary of the movie says 'it's too late to get out' . Not true. It never gets to that point where she is abused in any way. Beatriz offers her to leave with no consequences more than once. Get out of what? She doesn't even try, she just f...s up everyone and leaves.

By the way, at the end, she does not seem to give a s... of her boyfriend anymore, she just packs the cash and jewellery. The movie makes her a common criminal.

And all this from a woman who we see pray to God multiple times in the movie.

Also, one thought: how the hell did she think this would work? Was she hoping her boyfriend would never find out anything? Not find the marks of a full-term pregnancy and a birth or cesarian on her body? How stupid is she?!

The second half is just a mess, too bad, after a good start.

If the point was to turn the protagonist into the villain, Beatriz's story should have been told and made victim. But the last moment of her attacking Sofia kind of states her position as a villan too.

Such a mess.

All I really care about at this point is if Max is okay. Woof.

Great and different! If you like 'happy movies', look for another, cuz this ain't that!
MidnightSteamer31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie ain't everyone's cup of tea, I get that! But if you like twisting and turning storylines, like I do, it's an awesome movie!

It's very well written, and you get to actually hate both of the main characters and at the same time feel sorry for them!

All actors does an excellent job, the scenery is very beautiful and authentic, and the manuscript is good!

Didn't predict the sad ending, but it was very appreciated! So freaking dark!

And everyone complaining about Sofìa being a mean opportunist, yep! She is! That's part of the movie, and that's what makes her character extremely well-written!

It's a really good movie, give it a chance!

I'm happy that I did! :)

I was involved until the final 40 minutes.

(2022) Under Her Control/ La Jefa (In Spanish with English subtitles) THRILLER/ DRAMA

It opens with a "A Devil Wears Prada" scenario when a young lady, Sofia (Cumelen Sanz) is applying for a job as intern/ secretary for a popular clothing designer, Beatriz (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón). When she lands the job, she prioritizes working for her idol, Beatriz over moving to a different city when her boyfriend, Naco (Alex Pastrana) wants to relocate some place else. Then Sofia finds out she is expecting, telling no one else other than her boss Beatriz particularly not her boyfriend, Naco. Because Beatriz is unable to get prenant herself, she then makes a proposal to Sofia to surrogate the child to her for a price. She agrees but with a heavy financial price. Only then Beatriz would then convince Sofia to seclude herself living in an isolated house to protect the pregnancy with a Vietnamese maid to provide Sofia with everything she needs. And it was at the start of this point, I liked the movie much less. It just became more absurd, dumb and stupid.

Senseless
encoreconsultant30 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First I was confused why would they sign a contract if it was not enforceable since it wasn't legal. These two women have a lawyer draft a contract that he says is illegal, yet he advises them to sign it. Why? What lawyer would have his client sign an illegal contract? That made no sense to me at all.

Second, not sure how the new borns are documented in Spain but how did they plan to legitimize this baby? The doctor would forge the birth certificate who the mother is? That made no sense to me. All these professionals would literally risk breaking the law for a baby? The whole movie made no sense.

Even if everything is in favor of your life , simple irrational emotions can ruin your life
josephnz-611-8690762 November 2022
Although you see low rating, its a very good movie. I feel that the low ratings are just disapproval for not meeting personal expectations, which is ok, This not a thriller or entertainment or comedy. This can be interesting for people who is interested in psychology and philosophy. Its caricature depiction of a common scenario that happens with human beings. That is, even when everything in your life is going well, simple irrational emotions within people like, doubt, suspicion, greed etc can lead you to do things that will ruin your life and the life of people around you. When you watch as a third person you always have this itching in your heart asking why , why is she doing this? I could relate to lot real life scenarios throughout my life that has the central theme of this movie.

If i could give 0, i would. Just SKIP it
Littlesummer1420 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Save your time and SKIP it.

It's seriously nonsense. I dont get the direction of this movie. Who do i need to feel sympathetic? The female character is so bizarrely stupid and acts so stupid. She is more like ungrateful lil b****. The boss lady is kinda nice to her and she feels like she is enslaved. She has 6 months paid holidays n she has to do exercise for the pregnancy n boo hoo 'am enslaved!!' And why robbing n killing the lady at the end? She'll be in jail definitely. Yeah the price an opportunist needs to pay. Haha.

That's so stupid It's just wasting time to watch this. I guess i am losing braincell watching this. Just skip it. It's boring n stupid.

Enjoyable / Average
bbydrvc7 September 2022
It's an alright film. It kept me engaged and I wanted to know what was going to happen. I like the message this film sends. More often than we think, people we know might allow a new, short lived thrill or excitement to manipulate their lives. Their impulses will drive them to push the people who love them away. They can go as far as ruining their entire lives. I would have hoped for more details, suspense and action happening, but then I realized that the writer could have just been trying to send that simple message. I have seen worse thrillers on Netflix. Was it a thriller? Yeah. Did it entertain? I guess yeah. Average.

The writers of this movie SUCK
tyrabella5 September 2022
The writers made Sofia look like a VICTIM! She's not the victim here! TOTALLY ABSURD story. Total waste of 1:50:00 minutes. Honestly, it could've been better if the sequence of events were different, like maybe Sofia learned her lesson for being an opportunist and a liar and the boss living happily ever after with Sofia's baby? BTW, she had the right to get rid of Sofi after her delivery because she lied about her education. What a waste of good acting ruined by dumb writers. Really don't understand where you're all getting at. What's the point of this movie? DUH. If you don't want to waste your time, DON'T WATCH this movie.

HORRIBLE
sharongrotewold11 September 2022
DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! Literally I felt my IQ lower by the minute. The writers, producers and whoever came up with the idea really NEED to research more about the subject and to actually have a plot line. Even this comment has a punching line. Sheesh.

Even 80s movies have better writing than this. If this were an independent movie or their first movie, I'd be like "ok fine, it's comprehensive." But NO. I cannot emphasize this enough, DO NOT watch this. If you ever feel the urge to watch it, go play outside or let your toddler watch their favorite show. Whatever they want to watch will be MILLION times batter than this flat line, potato with no salt movie.

Worst Colombian imitation ever
scamachoh5 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
That spanish guy trying to be Colombian just does not make sense... at the beginning context is not so clear, could be Argentina or Spain.. overall its super obscure and has a bizarre story. This "psychological thriller" was so predictable and I did laugh more than anything...0/100. Music and sound effects where not even good.

The end didn't even make sense, you are gonna waist your time. . Random and weird I do enjoy Spanish cinema but this has nothing to do with it. More like scary movie type of stuff where you just laugh at how non sense it is..

This guy Nacho couldn't know where her girlfriend was and he suddenly decided after 9months to go look for her?! NON SENSE.. the story has lots of flaws .

This one is type of movies that make you upset because they try to be bad
dror982 March 2023
Started pretty good and promising. Got to say that it was related to the horror section on netflix although i much more consider it as kind of thriller or Psychological thriller at best.

Let's start with the main characters. All of them are awful and annoying and hard to get attached to. Although the acting was ok(again, at best. Sometimes bad acting) and the story was kind of fine(until the about the last third of the movie), at that part the movie really went down and it was really looking like the director was doing in on purpuse. So many mistakes on a movie which could be much better organized and although it's not exactly my type of movie genre, i still think it could be much much better with better Directing and casting and much more Logical acts and behaviors from the main characters, especially the main girl.

I will say that in many parts of the movie you can see many disturbing moments and this is what we usually look for in psychological thriller films. However, the way the movie was made from about the middle and especially in the last third just makes me think that it was done on purpose to let another terrible movie be released on Netflix

2/10.

Who's the boss?
kosmasp5 September 2022
Having a boss that has done things that you may not do to come and stay on top of things (no pun intended), is not the easiest thing. Of course there is an added bonus to things - if you have read what happens or what the movie is really about, you know what I mean. And the beginning with the two lovers makes even more sense in that context. Also the fact that we see our main female (hero?) character nude. Yes not all bed sheets cover female breasts while leaving mens upper body uncovered ... just saying.

If you have issues with a fairly small scene because of that, maybe this isn't for you. But this is not about that, the movie has way more out there scenes that you may take issues with. And they do not have anything to do with nudity. If you are able to, you may see this from both sides and sort of understand certain decisions ... at least to a certain degree. It is tough and depending on your morals ... well you'll see. The movie is quite predictable for some I would assume, but no brownie points if you guess certain twists .. it had to happen that way now didn't it?

Ending makes me knock off 3 stars
Thrill-Seeker5 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There are many movies where I preferred the bad guy/villian to win at the end, but Sofia chick is totally irritating unlikable ungrateful character one can come across.

I failed to relate what conclusion the filmmaker wanted audience to take away from the movie.

Did he think people will feel sympathy for the stupid greedy good for nothing Sofia at the end? Or does he want to blame her hormones for everything that happened ?

I found the old lady to be very kind, sensible and fair to her word over whole movie, even though she has to kill Nacho, as he was calling the cops.

Even if they would have shown Sofia losing everything she stole and being taken to Jail for the murder as the ending, it still might have not been this bad a movie.

In the final scene where she was walking away with money, I was just hoping someone would snipe her with a headshot, put her down and end the misery for the viewers.

A Stupid Story
Fisca2 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently the main character is a filthy ugly hypocrite who doesn't know what she wants. Beatriz is a tough but kind woman. What Beatriz did was an offer-which Sofia accept without any pressure from anyone.

Once Beatriz even open the gate for Sofia, so she free to go if that's what she wants. But nooo, of course Sofia didn't go, but the very next day she dragged a ladder and fell down when she climbed it, and screamed to her erratic stupid boyfriend that Beatriz is crazy.

Oh, by the way, how come any fancy company can be entered that easy by some lunatic?

Don't watch it. The story is so bad, not worth anyone's time.

The writer even decided to put a random Asian woman to play as an Indonesian, who ended up speaks funny Indonesia language.

Horrible writing
rowanhamza-7717718 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Whilst watching this movie, I couldn't help but pull out my phone to search google every 5 mins because things didnt make sense. If we're talking legally that it is.

1- When the boss first proposed the idea of raising the child, the preg woman replied with "so its just like surrogacy?" Surprisingly the boss said no. So that got me thinking if its not surrogacy and the boss won't be providing her eggs then why not just adopt the baby when its born?

2- Then I ruled out that there are 2 types of surrogacies. One of them is called a traditional surrogacy where in fact the surrogate may use her own eggs. So okay now we know it is in fact considered a surrogacy.

3- Now the lawyer states that the whole process of what they were undergoing was illegal in that jurisdiction, being Spain. So how is that the lawyers go on and draft a contract knowing that it will conflict with the laws of country. Common sense... even if the preg woman gets second thoughts and decides to keep the baby, there is nothing they can do about it, and most definitely a void contract will not help them get justice in court for breach of contract... she can walk out with her baby at any time.

4- Say the preg woman gives birth to the baby, at home even so that they wouldnt have to issue a birth certificate, how will the baby live a life without an identity? That leaves us with two options, either the boss fabricates a birth certificate or they issue the baby a birth certificate under his biological mom which automatically gives her guardianship but in reality is raised by the boss. Either way the boss and the child will live a troublesome life if the truth somehow came out.

5- The dynamic between the boss and preg woman is so uncomfortable to watch, going from super formal and professional at first to giving her morning kisses and holding her belly whilst swimming. Everything moved so fast it felt weird.

6- Say the girl did actually get the education she claimed, would the boss still keep her as an employee after giving birth? It would be so strange to work in the same environment knowing that your boss is raising your child.. also the girl would always be a part of her and the baby's life and has legal leverage in the sense that she could just take the child at any time, that would suck for the boss especially after she gets attached to the child.

7- Naco found out very early on that she was not working in London, that was confirmed by the London office. So why did it take him 8-9 months to just go to the Madrid office and ask for the address?

8- How come the gender of the baby wasn't shared with her when doing the ultrasound and when the boss was admiring the fetus? How come she was asked days later whilst she was having dinner with the boss and the gynecologist, she could've asked then and there... I mean the child is inside of HER.

I felt like there was many gaps in the movie that left me confused at times. My google searches comprised of "what are the types of surrogacies, is it illegal in spain, what are the elements of a valid contract, how to issue a surrogacy birth certificate in spain"? I learned more about the laws of Spain than I would've if I hadnt watch the movie so I guess thats a +

Two Women Out of Control
lavatch5 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of this film should have evolved into a straightforward transactional agreement for a surrogacy. When Sofia, the employee of Beatrix, becomes present and is thinking of having an abortion, Beatrix promises to care for the child as her own.

A contract is signed between the two women, but it was unclear why the proposition was considered illegal. It was even more disturbing that Beatrix insisted that Sofia live in isolation until the child is delivered.

But nothing prepares the viewer for the disturbing behavior of Sofia, an inveterate liar who comes to despise Beatrix. For her part, Beatrix also totally lost a grip on things when she murdered Sofia's boyfriend Nacho. Eventually, the two women loathe each other so much that they forget about the poor little baby!

The film merits two stars for the competent performances of the two actresses, who engaged in psychological warfare, culminating in disaster. But in the end, "Under Her Control" was an unusually unpleasant film depicting two women out of control.

Started off Promising to a complete disaster
stellanesscha12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(Synopsis) Started off nice and promising to our character Sofia and then everything turns to a complete disaster after a contract she makes with her boss.

Halfway into the movie you'll most likely be disappointed unless you're a keen watcher & understand the character pov in such situations.

(Spoiler) At first there's a beautiful bond between Sofia and Beatrix, like mentor and her protege (think Devil wear Prada). Then it progresses to sort of to make you think Beatrix is interested in Sofia as a lover to a possible motherly roll towards Sofia.

Such incident like the hotel room where Sofia's putting a yellow dress and Beatrix looks intrigued kinda like looking at a beauty or at a masterpiece and she comes up to her and caress her hair and ruffles it back into an updo.

Or the way Beatrix talks to Sofia into decision making, but also how she is now providing for her.

Another incident in the pool where there is a closeness between them as Sofia is swimming with Beatrix being carried by her in the pool for some exercise. You can see Sofia feels a bit of joy and love while Beatrix feels joy for the baby as she is caressing the belly while they're swimming. I felt that their relationship was blossoming, it also made me question their dynamic as it can be seen as lover or motherly role.

The choices these characters makes are irrational, if Sofia kept the baby, she would lose her job and become a kept woman which is something she doesn't want. So ultimately her "only" option is to take Beatrix offer in giving up her baby to her in order to keep her dream job after the pregnancy, however she has to keep it a secret from her boyfriend.

I don't understand the paranoia Sofia has to all the monitor and security cams.

This whole incident lead to a disaster of decisions of Beatrix enclosing Sofia tighter and tighter away from the world which was not necessary causing Sofias paranoia to worsen to even commit murder is beyond me. I can understand the emotions of soon to be mother Sofia is feeling; lonely, sad, frustrated, upset, and possibly feeling like an incubator watching Beatrix look at the ultrasound and not her as a person.

Not only that but also the baby room, like ? Why is she so shocked and or disturbed by this? You're giving Beatrix your baby so therefore a baby room.

And then have no sympathy for the loss Beatrix had for her baby Carlos.

If Beatrix had just allowed frequent # of calls for Sofia and her boyfriend, she wouldn't have been so paranoid and the boyfriend wouldn't have thought of calling the police or actually going into their work building. Like how did Beatrix not calculate this at all and think 6months no contact is "normal"?

I would say this is just a bad thriller, like trying to make devil wear Prada into "thriller".

Weird!
bekiwij24 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was very weird. I wasn't sure who was the protagonist because it went back and forth with two very strong characters. And I felt like the movie was rushed. The whole plot is very confusing. From the beginning, I felt like something was not right. The girls character was not very interesting no was the bosses character. So let's just say this story is about 2 very boring people!. So basically it is about a pregnant woman losing her mind. And a strong, independent, hard-working woman losing her mind. Simultaneously! Ha ha ! Well, it was an okay movie, but I don't think I'll watch it again. And one thing is for sure it was definitely not a mindbending psychological thriller, because everything was pretty straightforward and pointing towards insanity.
