Its a Karthik Movie
apjprakash2 April 2010
Once again lingusamy gives a Action movie. This time with Karthik . And Karthik proves his heroism. Some from BH Director Lingusamy traverses on an all new road show in Paiyaa in his home production Tirupathi Brothers and has acquitted himself fairly well. Although romance seems to be the axle in Paiyaa, Lingusamy has skewed away mildly from this and spiced it up with a travel (escape) event as a backdrop.

The film opens up with an ingenious manner of credits flipping on the road and dividers, lucidly indicating the genre of the film. A creative brainwave indeed! Karthi (Shiva), an engineering graduate with an attitude, is on the look out for a job. He does not seem to be much serious in seeking employment while his friends try their best to settle him. He spots Tamannah (Charu) in a bus stop and it is love at first sight. He finds her on a couple of occasions later and in fact misses an interview in her pursuit. Destiny seems to have something good waiting for him and he gets to spend themost beautiful phase of his life, giving her a ride in the car while waiting to pick the owner of the car at the railway station. Life takes an exciting turn from this point for Karthi who accepts to drop her in Mumbai and thus begins Paiyaa's journey of romance, action and emotions on a highway with a few turns, some with caution and some without.

Paiyaa zooms forward in the first half where Karthi is at driver's seat physically and metaphorically. An enjoyable performance from the young actor who appears to relish his role! For the first time in his career, he gets to cover himself with stylish costumes. He sparkles with haughty countenance, sideway glances, mischievous looks, 'know it all' attitude and an understated curiosity to know about Tamannah. He reiterates that he can essay any kind of role with aplomb. But there are still some vestiges of a villager in him which he needs to divest when necessary. Tamannah is fresh, youthful and emotes well too. Jagan has a small role in the second half. Karthi's friends are adept in their performance. Except for looking hot and handsome, the much talked about Milind Soman is wasted and any one could have performed his role.

Yuvan Shankar Raja is the major backbone of Paiyaa with lovely tracks suiting the mood of the film. Tamannah looks as fresh as the raindrops in thuli thuli mazhayai number. Suthude suthude boomi speaks of art director Rajeevan's work but he could have taken extra care especially about the stationery cloud hovering around the moon. The songs are all chartbusters and have all been picturized very aesthetically. Priya Manikandan's costumes are in sync with the nature of characters and the mood of the film. Brinda Sarathy's dialogues evoke laughter at the right places.

The second half slackens with some of the actions sequences appear contrived especially in the climax. How can someone even lift his head when beaten by a powerful metal rod? It is difficult to comprehend despite attributing it to cinematic liberties. The climax fights intend to be more for showcasing Karthi's heroism than for the story warranting it. And why is Karthi shown as someone who does not speak English despite being a city bred engineer with urban friends for company? Director Lingusamy has stuck to the genre that he has chosen for most part. He has recorded romance in a beautiful manner especially when Karthi communicates his feelings to his friends seeking advice and his dignified attitude towards Tamannah. The car chasing sequence in the open field is absolutely brilliant and so is Karthi going reverse in the opposite direction. Cinematographer Madhie needs plaudits here. Crisp editing by Anthony especially in the action sequences is a major plus point of Paiyaa and deserves a special mention.

Awesome Love Story
mujtabashareef15 January 2011
I saw this movie recently in Telugu and loved it...It was a Fresh story and an Awesome silent love story.... loved it for its simple treatment and its awesome Music....

Karthik was awesome in the role of an Engineering graduate who falls for a simple girl whom he sees on the road, a true example of Love at First Sight.... Tamanna has never looked so beautiful and her styling was awesome, she has come a long way since Happy Days and her performance as Charu was awesome... Milind Soman dint had much scope to act in this movie..

Music is the biggest highlight of the movie and the songs were presented wonderfully on the Screen especially the "Aray Re Vaana" and "Nee Yadalo"... Aray re vaana had wonderful dance steps and they were wonderfully synchronized with the music and lyrics of the song... Yuvan Shankar Raja rocks... Hats off...

The Direction was awesome, This was my first Lingusamy movie after watching this I became his fan and would love to watch his movies...

Music.... 10/10, Performances... 8/10, Overall.... 8/10...

great movie
nir-o12312 February 2011
I watched this movie after a month it came out on DVD. it was a really great entertainer. people say the music tracks are the ones that made the movie a success but I think they're only part of the success. This is a great adventure story about a guy taking a beautiful girl that he met for a long drive to bombay. this is every guys dream to ride a car with a girl like that and karthik pulled it off excellently. the fight scenes were really incredible, and I really enjoyed the suspense music that is used every time a fight is about to happen. I am actually from the USA and this would really please foreigners as well, if they had dub this move in English it would have been a great success like transporter which has a similar car drive storyline.

Paiyaa - Starts with a refreshment, wades in the middle slowly and ends with a sigh.
prasad250523 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I never considered Lingusami as a good director in coming up with a good story line or something fresh. Its just screenplay does the trick for him. Here its a yes and no. Initially seems fresh, though wades towards the end.

Story: Without any interest in anything Karthick leads a life where his friends try to fit him into a job. On the day of interview, he sees Tamanna and fall in love with her. (Love at first sight season, I believe). Needless to say, he misses the interview and his friends start scolding him. One fine morning he goes to railway station to pick one of his friend in the car. He sees Tamanna and a person asking him to drop them on Chennai. And the story begins. He goes ahead and Lingusaami looses the knot one by one which makes interesting. A group to get Tamanna follows them and another group to finish Karthi follows them at the same time. At one point of the movie, both the group joins together and why they follow, watch it in the screen if you really want to see the flick after reading the next few passages.

Karthi and Tamanna gives a youthful feel to the movie and alas it didn't continue for a long. Karthi impresses with his performance while Tamanna is still in her kinder garden when it comes to acting! Karthi, has to grow up a lot in dance, though he tried a lot, his brawny looks make it sound awkward at times. Miland Soman though looks stylish has nothing to offer as an actor. Wasted completely.

Songs are very well penned and soothing to here. When you need a peppy number the movie offers it. However not with some intelligence, but for offering sake you are provided with a song. All the songs stand out of place with the movie. And it feels childish, whenever Karthi starts singing with lot of expressions. I don't know how long this saga of singing songs will continue. Yuvan's BGM sounds good when there is a love sequence but damages your ears when somebody is fighting.

Mathi's cinematography feels good and gels with the movie. But too many closeup shots of almost everyone is painful to see at times except Tamanna's! Even am a guy :)Anthony fits the bill in editing.Action- Kannal Kannan sir, If you think if someone is hit with a metal rod for umpteen times and still he can fight, teach me that magic ! I wanna really beat some baddies..

Lingusami as usual tries to portray almost the same story he told in Run, Sandaokozhi with a car and a different cast. But he fails big time, in fitting a story into it, though the screenplay is somewhat paced. Paiyaa has its moments and that's it. Many times, you cant stop getting stumbled upon many of his own movies in the way it told starting from costume, name, art and what else story. That makes Paiyaa the same run of the mill. Lingusami thinks he can give a movie with a decent cinematography, good songs and few intense scenes and that's what people need, sorry sir its is not. What it basically lacks is a script and a strong screenplay to back it up. Paiyaa fails in both the cases.

Truly a Romantic Journey
vishnu-vg19843 August 2014
Perfection in everything.. be it the songs, stunts, cinematography, action scene or anything.. perfection is there, and there are no twists or negative blockages, and the I felt Paiya a complete entertainer..

The film is a romantic journey. Right from the start, the film will evokes the sublime feelings of romance and it prevails the entire film. The action scenes and stunts are quite amazing, and one of the scenes liked is the stunt scene just before the interval..

Between the journey there are mind blowing songs, which intensify the romantic bliss. There are no complex twists or negative feelings or blockages and the film is ending with a positive climax.... Mindblowing film... Thanks to N.Linguswamy and team for offering such a great film..

Epic Love story !
navinmax2 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is an epic love story that happens in the 21st century, unlike the usual movies where the guy goes to the girls house and they decline his proposal and all kinds of things happens where the lover becomes a hero to fight off the bad guys for his love sake !!! I know it's a classic movie story but anyways this movie is totally different that shows how a jobless guy falls in love with a girl who he has seen getting into the bus !! But destiny brings them together again and again until she asks for his help to get away from her family who compel her to marry someone else. Then the whole movie is about their Road trip and what occurs during that trip where both share their secrets and eventually they have feeling for each other, finally we see how their love story comes to a happy ending . The story was well scripted and the screenplay was great. Don't forget the music as it played a key role in this movie for it's success !! N. Linguswamy is known as a very successful director and proves it again with a new story-line that has caught the hearts of many people. Overall this is a great movie to watch !!! The most interesting part I felt in this movie was when we find out that there wasn't just enemies following the girl but also bad guys following the guy for the ruckus he caused in Mumbai. The acting done by Karthi and Tamannaah were excellent. After hits like Bheema and Sandakozhi this is the next epic movie to watch!!!

No story at all
vjnambu13 November 2019
Karthi gives tammanna lift, behind tammanna is Andhra goons and behind Karthi is Mumbai goons. In the end both the gangs come together and Karthi beats all of them together. In the end, karthi's friends tell tammanna that he loves her and finally she accepts his love. THE END. That's only the movie. Only songs are good. Otherwise this film is bad because of no story.

A Wonderful Journey
sreenivas198820 April 2010
Paiyya...again a superb entertainer after Director Lingusamy's RUN.... This is Karthi's first commercial film. Karthi (Shiva) is a stylish guy having a gud friends circle and looking for a job which he is not much interested of. He loves to be casual and cool. The movie starts in Bangalore - The Garden City where he meets the gorgeous girl Tamannaah(Charu)and falls in love with her as usual like every hero.

The journey from Bangalore to Mumbai is entertaining and very romantic. His car driving and stunts are great and awesome. A very good background music and effects is an additional quality to the film. Racing maniac and car maniac will jus lov it!! The selection of car (Mitsubishi Lancer) by the director is good. The drive at night is also nice.

The songs are all awesome both melodious as well as fast track. Poongaatre poongaatre song rocks. Very good work by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Totally even if there is not much story involved, because of the thrill, suspense, action, journey and not to forget Karthi's dialogues and expressions, the movie is simply superb.

Vrooooooooooooom!!!!!!

An entertaining ride
gowshihan20004 April 2024
In all honesty, there is not much of a story here other than a hero who gets a chance to drop his crush to Bombay. While there is not much going on in the film, two factors have carried the film immensely. The second one is the lead actors Karthi and Thamanna. They are the movie and they did an exceptional job in their role. There was nothing much in terms of acting but Karthi has a charm which attracts the audience and makes the audience watch him, and Thamana as the quiet homely girl makes an impact (mostly due to her beauty but it still seems she is living the character). Their bond in the film really works and you really hope that Thamana will eventually fall for Karthi. The main carrying factor of the film is definitely the music. Yuvan single handedly carried the whole movie and without him, the movie may have not actually been so engaging or entertaining. The 6 songs in the movie are chartbusters and will still be in the future years, and the background music is beautiful. Be it the Charulatha humming bgm, the BGM when they are stuck in a forest, or even when they are doing nothing but driving, Yuvan brings a life to the scene which would have otherwise made the movie nothing. One entertaining ride thanks to Karthi, Thamana and Yuvan.
