The monkey is named Mr. Nesmith and wears a woolen hat with a little ball on top of it. This is an homage to Michael Nesmith of the music group The Monkees, whose regular attire on the tv show Los Monkees (1965) consisted of a woolen hat with a little ball on top of it.
In earlier inceptions, Carl was originally going to accompany Sheen on his voyage to Zeenu. It was ultimately decided to drop Carl from the show to put more focus on Sheen, however, the producers didn't want Carl to be uninvolved so Doppy was created as a substitute.
At first, the show wasn't going to be a spin-off at all, but rather it was intended to be an original show called Red Acres. It was about an average fast-food worker, who got launched into space and crash-landed onto a planet with hillbilly aliens, but Nickelodeon didn't pick it up. This unmade show's premise was re-tooled into Planet Sheen.
Originally, the Emperor was going to be evil and the show would've focused on Sheen being a double agent for the Emporer and the Resistance (led by Aseefa). This was dropped because it was too much like James Cameron's movie, Avatar (2009).
Jeffrey Garcia, Rob Paulsen, Candi Milo, Jeff Bennett, Jim Cummings, and Mark DeCarlo are the only actors to do voice work in both shows.
