A Mediocre Rom-Com with a Hint of Quirkiness
steveinadelaide11 September 2023
The French romantic comedy-drama Everybody Loves Jeanne, directed by Céline Devaux, is a disappointment. The story revolves around Jeanne, an entrepreneur, who is struggling with depression following the death of her mother and the collapse of her business. She decides to sell her mother's apartment in Lisbon to clear her debt and on the way, she meets Jean, a former high school classmate.

Unfortunately, the plot of the movie is predictable and lacks depth, with a weak conflict and resolution. Jeanne's constant self-doubt and depression are explored in a superficial and clichéd way. The tone of the movie is inconsistent, and the attempts at humour fall flat. There are also times of forced sentimentality. The acting is competent, but the characters are underdeveloped and lack nuance. The music is forgettable and doesn't enhance the emotional impact of the scenes.

The insertion of animations that represent Jeanne's inner voice is the more interesting aspect of the movie. They were a creative way to convey Jeanne's emotional turmoil, but they felt intrusive and annoying after a while. The dialogue is mostly banal and lacks any wit or depth, making it difficult to call it a romantic comedy. The execution of the film was lacklustre and formulaic, which made it a boring experience. The movie felt way longer than its 95 minutes.

I would not recommend this movie. There are far better films to spend your time on. It may appeal to those who enjoy light and predictable movies with a hint of quirkiness, but for those who seek engaging and captivating movies, this one is a miss.

Not very good plot. Good animations.

So I saw this movie in an attempt to improve my french. As a french practice I quite reccommend it, as it was fairly easy to understand (I'm a native spanish speaker with very few knowledge of french). Now, about the film: A lot of it doesn't really make sense; specially how the characters behave: Noisy real estate agents, a neighbor that adds nothing to the plot, a call from her ex intern to reveal nothing important, a children's concert in which nothing happens, a scene in which they shatter plates on the floor, a motorbike being stolen for no purpose at all, and so on. The guy who plays the main character's love interest is completely crazyn, and she knows it, but suddenly (and we never understand why) she decides that after all she does quite like him, and apparently she feels butterfies and all. The ending is as bizarre as the characters: Walking through a port (not knowing how they got up there) full of containers doing nothing. The only good part of the movie, and the reason I gave it this grade, was that the animations of her thoughts made me laugh; they were clever, funny and well made; but unfortunately they were not enough to support the entire movie.

The intimacy of Jeanne

Warning: Spoilers
So we follow Jeanne who have problem of money. So she needs to go back to her mother's flat and sell it because of that. But what is the big problem of the movie is that we forgot the problem pretty quick and we enter in Jeanne's private life. So the money was just an excuse to know more Jeanne. I enjoyed the animations when we enter in the mind of Jeanne and what she thinks and we feel very close to her trough that process and i laughed many times. So the movie is pretty good and have a nice comedy side in it that i enjoyed. Her brother and the man she met at the airport will be the main center of attention of Jeanne. And that become our center of attention too. And we saw what she saw. We hear what she hear, we know what and how she thinks. We are all Jeanne. We have the same problem: money and that make a nice movie and some nice revelations(the sexual side of her mother). A nice movie.
