Futurama meets Galaxy Quest for kids!- but just barely
vaultvintage19 November 2021
With the multi-punch comedy timing of shows like Futurama, Simpsons, Family Guy and a lot of the Adult Swim fare, Dogs in Space feels almost a little too fast or complex for kids. But it does truly adhere to being rated Y7, even though just barely. There are a lot of hard sci-fi references and jokes about psychological or 'adult problems' for the parents that sometimes feel a little awkward or over the heads of the age intended- but nothing is actually offensive or inappropriate. There are a few scenes, situations and creatures that may be scary or gross for some kids, but there's not any (red) blood or anything more than cartoon violence.

Captain Garbage is a more likeable Zapp Brannigan, Captain Kirk, and Homer Simpson tolled up in dog form and Haley Joel Osment knocks it out of the lark. The crew are all likeable sci-fi stereotypes, although Ed, who is kind of like the Bender of the crew, is the most questionable character and possible bad influence for a Y7 series. As a rather one-note greedy looter/pickpocket/scoundrel with some other shady dealings, he feels a bit out of place in the crew and show.

Overall, for nerdy parents and their kids who already have some classic sci-fi under their belts, it's a really good series full of good jokes and references. If your kids haven't already seen any Star Trek, it could be a good introduction, and if they have, the viewing will be that much richer.

WHAT MAKE A CAPTAIN 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
saraimatthew22 September 2022
Garbage is a narcissistic, egotist with a hero complex. I would rather witness him perform the Loaf's job. No depressing scene could ever convince me that he is capable or qualified to serve as captain. Additionally, you're teaching children that doing wrong can result in rewards. I do not support that message, either. Garbage caused issues even when he was a tea person. Could you incorporate him in the action by not placing him in the forefront? What made Loaf's job not a two seater? When Stella was doubting herself hearing Garbage voice made her confidence. Garbage may understand the value of team through Loaf, could be a role model and help Loaf with his fears. Making Loaf the Greatest Capitan EVER.

I know this is intended for kids
ilpo-surokivi17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, another kids show I review. I just like watching kids shows from time to time because of the light-hearted humor and sillyness. There is some shows meant for older audiences with humor too. I would consider those be like Rick and Morty. The difference is that I consider R&M to be for older teenagers and up because Rick is often drinking and there's just some too adult themes for kids. Then there's Bojack Horseman and that show about that spy guy. Don't remember the name. All cartoons though.

My favorite characters have to be Chonies or Carbage. Never figured out what breed Chonies is. Chihuahua maybe because he/she is small. Carbage is a Corgi. He says it himself. Love how they kept all these silly names probably given by their owners before genetic manipulation. Lucky, Chonies, Carbage, Mimi. Carbage is a good boy at the end. Just assuming he's a good boy because he looks like it and the voice actor sounds like a guy. The season 2 ending though. Meow.

New Favourite Animated Series
addakolod20 November 2021
I'd put this up there with shows like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe which are geared towards kids, sure, but have well-written characters and plot lines with real emotional depth - I absolutely loved it as an adult and recommend it. I was totally invested the whole way through.

An Unexpected Masterpiece
nicorozner17 April 2022
Going in, I had very low expectations. I clicked on this on Netflix as a joke, thinking it would just be another terrible kids show to laugh at and make fun of.

Yet at every corner, every story beat, character, scene and episode, Dogs in Space surprised me in the best ways possible. The backgrounds, art style and animation were distinctive, detailed and beautiful. The characters were all well written and fun to watch. The story was incredibly thoughtful and heartwarming. I can say with 100% confidence that this is the best cartoon I've watched in 2022.

This isn't a "turn-your-brain-off-and-watch-the-pretty-flashing-lights" lazy kids show. Dogs in Space is thoughtful. And you can tell the cast and crew had a lot of passion for it.

I cannot put into words how much I love this show. I've watched it nearly 20 times and it just never gets old. Go watch it if you haven't already,

Doggone Overlooked
josephmayes21 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dogs in Space is a simple idea done beautifully. It's Dogs. And they're in Space. And it's insanely adorable. But under the cute surface lies a wholesome, surprisingly layered story about optimism, hope, and reclaiming those aforementioned elements. I do wish the relationship between man and dog would have more exploration, but I'm hopeful that could be an opportunity in a potential second season (hopefully).

Stupid Space Dog! -.-
a34trgv130 June 2023
It shouldn't be too much to ask for a cartoon to be mildly amusing, especially one that features dogs treking the galaxy. Yet Dogs In Space doesn't ev3n come close to such expectations and falls face first onto the floor. From the awful writing to the mediocre animation, this show makes cleaning up after a dog feel like going to Disney World.

Created by Jeremiah Cortez, the show follows a crew of dogs treking the galaxy to find a new home for their human owners. This proves to be a very difficult mission as when alien monsters aren't trying to kill them, their grossly incompetent captain is! Right of the bat this show has a serious writing problem. Each episode follows the repeated formula of the crew barely getting out alive because their captain is such an under qualified moron! The crew nearly gets killed in every episode from some alien monster, which gets old and tiring very fast. The show also bypasses the backstory in the intro, which is an inexcusable writing mistake that made me feel like the creators didn't think the audience would care about the how, the who, or the why. News flash: we do! Because without that important piece of context, we don't care enough about the mission to root for the main characters to succeed. Lastly, the humor absolutely sucks! Most of the jokes are tired puns, groan worthy gags, and lousy gross out. This is exactly what NOT to do when writing a show; if I wanted to be told what's happening in the story, I'd listen to a podcast!

If this crew is supposed to be humanity's last hope, we're royally doomed. Starting with our leading pooch, Captain Garb- stop! Stop! Stop! No no no no! What the fruit salad on a Friday is this?! Of the millions of different names to call a dog, his owner chose GARBAGE?! That's got to be some form of animal cruelty because no one in their right mind should call a dog or ANY animal "garbage!" Anyway, Captain Cruelly Named By His Awful Owner is the moronic, self-centered leader of the crew who never learns anything, constantly puts his crew in danger, and never blinking shuts his half-wit snot! Did I mention he's freaking stupid?! He's easily one of the worse cartoon characters from a Netflix show and it would honestly make the show better if he wasn't in it! If you're expecting the other crew mates to be much better, think again! Stella is the strict and bossy second in command, Nomi is as annoying as a dog barking at nothing, Loaf is a nervous wreck, Ed is a narcissist, Chonies is skiddish tech guy (who's name is slang for underwear, btw), and Kira is the feral dog who isn't familiar with advanced technology. None of them are remotely interesting beyond their one personality trait and they're all interchangeable as the show progresses.

I can't help but feel bad for the cast because they're all doing good voice work with such lackluster material. Haley Joel Osment did a really good job as Captain His Owner Must've Grown Up In Stupid Town I Swear. He makes this idiotic pooch sound chipper, optimistic and friendly. Sarah Chalke made Stella sound brave and reasonable, Kimiko Glenn sounded very eccentric as Nomi, David Lopez sounded zany as Chonies, and William Jackson Harper sounded like he was having a blast playing Loaf. Chris Parnell was fine as Ed, though I couldn't help but just hear Doug from Family Guy. I know this must've just been another job for them (gotta put bread on the table somehow), but they still did very good work here.

The animation isn't very good, which is unfortunate as it's provided by Atomic Cartoons, who provided animaton for 8 episodes of Hilda. The characters resemble their real life dog counterparts very well and their fur is very colorful. However, I think their facial expressions are inconsistent. One character just has dots for eyes and another has irises. Just pick one and stick with it, otherwise it's just confusing. Another problem with the designs is the mouths aren't drawn well as sometimes they're not aligned with the snout and other times they disappear when the character is supposed to be smiling. The characters also lack mass, which is important to show how big some characters are to others. It also helps make the action feel more intense, which as is feels very underwhelming. I will say though that the backgrounds look incredible with the ships and planets having a great amount of detail in the sceneray. It's not all bad, but it's not very good either.

Bad show! Bad! Bad show! Dogs In Space is one of the worst cartoons I had the displeasure of watching on Netflix. The animation is mediocre, the characters are unlikable, the writing is atrocious and the humor is nonexistent. It also has one of the worse names for a main character I've ever seen. If it was intentional, thanks I hate it! Just like I hate this stupid show! If you want to see a good show about dogs, watch Bluey. Yeah, I said it! I don't care if it was meant for preschoolers, hit has far more entertainment value than this show ever dreams of having -.-

A show to watch with the kids that's actually hilarious.
zackplog27 November 2021
So good. My son likes it even more than me. I adore the fact that there is a story, but you can watch more than half the episodes randomly and not miss anything. The rewatch ability of this is impressive.

The feels, man. Be ready for them.

((P. S. Nomi is amazing.))

Very. Good. SHOW.
ninjagojump23 December 2021
Dogs in Space is just one of the few shows to actually get TV right. The shows fits all ages and its really enjoyable because there's an actual storyline. It's not just filler episode that have no context and meaning and some of the jokes actually had me laughing. The animation might seem simple and lazy but it allows for some very quick and fluid movements between characters. All of the characters have their own motivations and owners. For example Garbage is motivated by the fact Chelsea is counting on him to save earth. Out of all, The show is a solid 9/10. Really enjoyable and over all a good time.

Characters: Nomi, Captain Garbage, Stella, Kira, Ed, Chonies, Loaf, Happy, Chelsea.

Funny, cute, clever, smart. It's the dog show everyone didn't know they needed.
SecretAgentK95 December 2021
I absolutely adore this show. The characters, the voice overs, the animation, the writing - it's all there. It's a wonderful addition to Netflix's animated lineup, and I dearly hope Netflix will renew this show for many seasons to come. Truly a joy to watch, especially if you are a dog obsessed, NASA loving, sci-fi geek like me!

What Lightyear wishes it was
doverbenuwu14 September 2022
Pixar movie Lightyear has a similar plot but this show is actually done much better. I like the occasional kids show and hearing just the title it immediately caught my attention. Its very cute and has some good humor for a kids show, but definitely geared towards 5-10 year olds. It's more entertaining than amphibia's.first season imo. Has some jokes that kids probably wouldn't understand, making fun of humans' tendency to colonize and such. I absolutely adore the art style of this show, very cute.

Its a good show and if you have kids I would definitely recommend to watch this with them, cute dogs :]
