'Millers in Marriage' Review: An Ensemble of Familiar Faces
Image
Thirty years ago, Edward Burns won the coveted Grand Jury prize for his low-budget indie feature The Brothers McMullen at Sundance. The charming actor and filmmaker would go on to co-star in Steven Spielberg's masterpiece Saving Private Ryan, guest-star in shows like HBO's infamous Entourage (where the guys called him "Eddie"), and continue to shoot his own independent films throughout the years. His latest is Millers in Marriage, which, with its New York-set subject matter, might even bring you back to that acclaimed project that put Burns on the map three decades ago. If you haven't seen The Brothers McMullen, that's A-ok — and might even work in Burns' favor.

Some of your favored and long-lost performers, both on the big and small screen, populate the ensemble Burns puts together for his new drama film out this week. And while some of these big names use their trademark perks to boost the film,...

The Agency Review: Brilliance Interrupted
Image
Based on the popular French series The Bureau, Showtime’s The Agency has enormous potential. Its star-studded ensemble includes Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jeffrey Wright. Produced by George Clooney and directed by Joe Wright, the show promised a new spin on the espionage genre.

Fassbender plays “Martian,” a CIA agent who returns from Ethiopia after an abrupt end to his passionate love with Sami Zahir (Turner-Smith). At London Station, he navigates bureaucratic obstacles and personal complications while attempting to acclimate to civilian life.

The series alternates between a gritty spy drama and a more pulpy thriller without really committing to either. While seeking to incorporate modern geopolitical themes, the work lacks substance. The result is a mediocre examination of intelligence work that fails to capitalize on its tremendous talent.

Despite Wright’s outstanding performances and brief moments of visual excitement, “The Agency” ultimately disappoints. Viewers may be better served...

Reverse 1999: The Best Voyager Build (Psychubes & Team Comp)
Image
Voyager is a beautiful violinist in Reverse 1999 whose build centers around controlling the battlefield with debuffs. Her debuff attack, Stellar Symphony, inflicts Confusion on enemies when at least partially leveled up, reducing their Critical Resist. Meanwhile, her Counter, Mending Sonata, buffs allies with extra Dmg and lowered Dmg Taken. Stellar Symphony may have a low attack, but it provides a Dmg bonus for Voyager's Ultimate, Galatic On Strings.

Voyager's Insight One is highly useful, as after three actions, she gets Chorus Ensemble. With this status, if an enemy takes action after Voyager acts, she gives all enemies a round of Silence, which prevents them from buffing, debuffing, countering, or healing. If she gets to Insight Three, she also inflicts Seal during Chorus Ensemble, so enemies can't use their Ultimates. This encourages an active, constant play style.

Every Honkai: Star Rail Code & Reward (May 2023)
Image
Honkai: Star Rail codes are starting to be given out frequently by HoYoverse after the turn-based RPG’s worldwide release. Much like in the developer’s other popular game, Genshin Impact, promo codes are a method of players getting in-game rewards for free. These codes often give level-up materials, for example, but also the premium currency used to buy the item necessary to participate in the gacha system. In Honkai: Star Rail, this currency is known as Stellar Jade.

With every 160 Stellar Jade, players can buy a Star Rail Pass or a Star Rail Special Pass, both of which allow players to pull from the Warp banners available in the game. While this resource can be obtained by playing, it is limited, and if players want more, they need to buy it with real-life money. Luckily, HoYoverse has given out three Honkai: Star Rail codes as of May 2023, all of which contain Stellar Jade,...

Mica Burton Copied A Signature Geordi La Forge Move For Star Trek: Picard
Image
In season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard," the original crew from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" have returned to help their old friend Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) in one last great adventure. Enterprise engineer and Starfleet museum operator Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) has ended up back in the thick of things against his will after Picard came to him for help along with one of his daughters, Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut). Sidney steers the helm of the U.S.S. Titan and is quite a bit different from her dear dad, but the other La Forge daughter is a chip off the old block. Alandra not only works with her dad at the museum, she's also an engineer. What's more, she's played by LeVar Burton's real-life daughter, Mica Burton.

Mica managed to get the gig without involving her dad at all, and seeing the two of them onscreen together is truly lovely.

Inside TikTok Star Dylan Mulvaney’s Rainbow Room Debut
Image
A year ago Monday, Dylan Mulvaney came out as a trans woman and began chronicling her journey on TikTok with her “Days of Girlhood” series.

To celebrate her one-year anniversary, Mulvaney hosted a cabaret show, “Dylan Mulvaney’s Day 365 Live!,” at the iconic Rainbow Room in New York. Before the show, she spoke with Variety on the red carpet about what she’s learned from her very public and unexpected journey.

“It was such an accident, but a very happy one,” Mulvaney told Variety on Monday night. “Going in, I had no idea just how vulnerable I would get and how much I had to learn about womanhood.”

The 80-minute variety show began with a pre-recorded clip of Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) comforting Mulvaney in her dressing room. From there, Mulvaney eagerly entered from the balcony at the back of the Rainbow Room and sang a series of Kate Bush covers.

This year, Latvia is sharing a spotlight with neighboring Lithuania and Estonia at the European Film Market, which has dedicated its 2023 Country in Focus Spotlight to the Baltic nations. ‘Sharper’ Review: Remember When the Whodunit Was Mean? (And Maybe a Little Dumb?)
Image
The opening credits of Benjamin Caron’s — con artist drama “Sharper” tell us all we need to know about what’s coming. They’re slick, a little mean, and definitely kind of silly. In fact, “credits” is too generous a term, because Caron opens his feature film debut with a single word: “Sharper.” Flash to its textbook definition, wonderfully simple in its information: “one who lives by their wits.”

Isn’t that everybody? Not like this, not like these people. God, you’d hope to not be like these people.

Based on Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka’s Blacklist script, “Shaper” slices and dices a classic con story and refashions it as its own kind of whodunit, one where everyone is some degree of guilty or culpable or just damn deserving of being tricked, and delights in piling on the just plain mean twists for the hell of it. Told...

2023's Best Director Oscar Category Resumes A Disappointing Trend
Image
The nominations for Best Director at the 95th Academy Awards continue a disappointing trend from years gone by. January 24, 2023 saw the nominations for 2023's Oscars announced by previous Best Actor nominee Riz Ahmed and M3GAN's Allison Williams, which highlighted the likes of Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, and All Quiet on the Western Front as the front-runners for the biggest award ceremony of the year. While the Oscars celebrate all aspects of film, the Best Director category is one of the most coveted awards, but 2023's shortlist of directors highlight a disappointing and unfortunate trend returning to the Academy Awards.

For the 95th Academy Awards, five acclaimed directors have been nominated to take home the coveted trophy. The category consists of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienerts (the "Daniels") for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Todd Field for Tár, Martin McDonagh for The Banshees of Inisherin,...

Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers
TIFF Review: Stellar Captures a Budding Romance with Celestial Power
Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers
It’s all a matter of perspective. If you’ve never known a privileged existence, what difference to your world would an apocalypse truly introduce? There’s always been fire for She (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) and He (Braeden Clarke). There’s always been tragedy. Whether living under the oppressive rule of Canadian law or being ignored and/or disrespected when leaving the reservation for the cities that they were told would open their arms if only they gave into demands for assimilation, life has always been a struggle to reconcile the present with an immovable past and uncertain future. So when the lightning and thunder turn to earthquakes and hurricanes, it’s no surprise that She and He sip their drinks at the bar and laugh while everyone else around them goes insane.

Because this is an indigenous story, there’s also an element of perspective where it concerns Mother Nature.

Indigenous Women Grab More Screen Space at the Toronto Festival
Image
By Jennie Punter

From icons and industry veterans to emerging directors and new faces, the stories and creative power of Indigenous women are featured at the 2022 Toronto festival.

Buffy Sainte-Marie alighted opening night Sept. 8 to launch Toronto’s streetfest, just an hour before the premiere of Madison Thomas’ “Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On,” The doc explores the artistry and activism of the Cree singer-songwriter — the only Indigenous person to win an Oscar (for song “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman” in 1983).

Buoyed by the ascendant advocacy and investment of Canada’s Indigenous Screen Office (Iso) and the longstanding grassroot networks across the arts, this year’s slate further broadens the festival’s evolving programming ethos with narrative films that reflect the histories, dreams, and day-to-day realities of Indigenous women filmmakers and their communities.

For the “Bones of Crows,” esteemed multihyphenate Marie Clements held close the stories...
