Taggert says, "I'm telling you Jack, there are strange things under the midnight sun!" The first line in Robert W. Service's poem 'The Cremation of Sam McGee' starts: "There are strange things done in the midnight sun by men who moil for gold; the Arctic trails have their secret tales that could make your blood run cold...". Service wrote quite a few poems about the far north and pretty much created the myth of the mysterious arctic.
At the time this episode was made, the deepest antarctic (south pole) ice core did reach ice dating back about 750,000 years. Since then cores have reached 1.5 million year old ice.
