Didn't expect this
mattrabbi5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Whoa, didn't expect this episode going in this week. After a season nearly full of one-off episodes, either really clever or a bit weaker, we get an episode full of character development, while also exploring the relations between some characters.

Many people last season were complaining about the amount of ultimately unimportant episodes, so this is a nice change of pace. However, I feel like some people will still complain about this episode not being the most clever, or the most mind blowing one of the series. Impossible to please everyone, I guess.

It seems easy for people to forget that there are 70 episodes of Rick and Morty ordered, so they won't all be the greatest episodes and they will explore new ideas. However, I really enjoyed this one. Different doesn't always equal bad, and that was certainly the case here. (Plus, this wasn't even necessarily "different", because it's not like there were never episodes like this in Rick and Morty, just not recently.)

In this episode Morty gets a girlfriend, similarly to in "The Vat of Acid Episode", except in this one we get to see the whole thing play out, and with dialogue. It was a delight to notice Alison Brie (who played Annie Edison in Dan Harmon's other show "Community") as the voice of Planetina, who did a fantastic job voice acting here. I didn't even recognize her voice at first, even after having watched all 6 seasons of Community and all of Bojack Horseman (where she voiced Diane). Props to her, as well as the voice actors for Beth and Morty (Sarah Chalke and Justin Roiland), as there was much more emotion involved in the voices this episode. We're reminded, through this plot, that Morty is still a teenager, and still has pretty shallow views of the things around him. He killed an entire town on an alternate planet in the first episode, and killed Planetina's 4 "kids" in this episode (fantastic scene, by the way), yet can't stay with Planetina because she killed those workers. It sort of makes sense that he would react this way, as a 14 year old, since those people were from his planet and dimension, and he viewed them as innocent, but this was still pretty dumb of him. What else is new though, it's Morty.

Most importantly (in my opinion), in this part of the episode, we get to see Morty express his frustration with the way people view him, and some development in the relationship between him and his mother. I really enjoyed this part of the plot, like I said, very different kind of episode to what we've been getting recently (but in a good way).

The Rick and Summer plot was getting pretty weird, but ultimately the point was to show how much Rick desperately wants to be a non-caring person, but in his attempts to do something completely meaningless to him he ends up getting emotionally attached to one of the aliens. This shows further that our Rick (C- 137), despite wanting to just be another rick, can't help but care about things, or people.

All in all, I can see some people disliking this episode, but for people who enjoy character driven episodes (with some really good action sprinkled in), this will be an enjoyable episode.

Not your typical episode but great!
kadenkgcampbell5 July 2021
"Waaa was it was so boring. Not enough action. Such a dumb love story". GROW UP aren't we watching adult swim? Be an adult. It was a great story and unique like ALWAYS. Planetina was AWESOME and I hope I see her again. You guys gotta realize they're kids not adults with different views on life.

The B story was hilarious. Summer and Rick are both broken and hurt by heartbreak. I can see why they said this season has a lot more sex haha. Gross but funny. It was a great episode.

Proving there's nothing left to prove
reynoldswraptpe5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
While the plot itself is fairly predictable, what should be a lackluster episode is a surprisingly heartfelt character study delivered with finesse. A hilarious scene involving a repeatedly slammed door is used to later move the living hell out of you with some much appreciated subtle humanity from Beth as one slam of a door and one quick shot of Beth speak volumes about her slowly dawning fear of her children truly no longer needing her. It's these little touches that run through both the A and B storylines that have me still thinking. That's the sign of damn good episode, no matter how predictable.

It also doesn't hurt that it's funny as hell. Especially if you grew up watching "Captain Planet and The Planeteers" like me. From the music to the cheesy dialogue, they nailed it. And the grown up Planeteers were darkly hilarious in how completely jaded they were. Planetina's logo was even the emblem for the heart ring! The level of care and detail blew me away.

Shoutout to Alison Brie for killing it as Planetina.

Rick & Morty is back in top form, baby!

Parting note: I laughed so hard at the end stinger I had tears in my eyes.

One of the best episodes for Morty's character. This episode shows Morty trying to find meaning in his life once again which is a stark contrast to Summer who is becoming more like Rick. The slow character development pays off in episodes like this.

My personal favourite of the season so far.
jpnhjdqp5 July 2021
You might disagree with me here, but for me this was my favourite episode of the season thus far. I'm a sucker for character driven episodes, and these episodes have been lacking recently!

While this episode might not have been the absolute best of them, for me it was refreshing to see. Don't get me wrong, I really love the mindblowing sci-fi episodes (especially Total Rickall from s2), but I absolutely love the episodes where they develop the characters, and without spoiling anything this one includes moments where they really shine. Some viewers of this show may disagree and that's okay! To me this was truly an emotional episode, especially knowing the context of the show, and the meaning of some scenes and dialogue.

My personal favourite episode of the show is Auto Erotic Assimilation from s2, and this one might just be second in terms of character driven episodes (excluding the amazing sci-fi focused episodes).

I'm not sure why but after all these years this has to be the most realistic feeling ep (when it comes to Rick and Morty) ever produced. Jokes were still there but Morty's dilemma felt real to watch.

very underrated episode
viktorpenic5 July 2021
I wanted to give a 9 but I have it a 10 because it's so underrated. I think its different then other episodes but in a good way it was funny, sad and gruesome. This one was all about love and love is complicated and weird and this episode showed that and I loved it.

A different episode for completing a season
masoud_ahmadi5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A different episode from the last two ones, which is necessary for every season so that every single episode is not about complex nonlinear storylines; however, I tend to believe we already have seen better versions of this episode. It's very similar to the episode with Unity and a little bit the vat of acid episode; I mean, the Unity episode was a better version of love story for R&M. Also, the gross group-sex was something we had seen in the dragon episode, the inception episode and of course again the unity episode. Also, it reminds me of some other episodes like Raising Gazorpazorp and Rest and Ricklaxation when Morty got in love or date older women. Moreover, Beth and Jerry getting worried about Morty was not new either.

Although I talked mostly about the negative aspects, there were some interesting and fun parts like summer becoming Rick's favourite (again not so new!), the planets, Morty killing people so easily by himself and many other things; and of course my favourite part of the episode: Morty delivers pizza!

Overall, it was a good episode for completing a season, but definitely not one of my favourite of the series.

To compensate for all the people giving it a bad rating
bonnegaut6 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode is not one of the best of the show but it definitely does not deserve the hate. Under it's simplistic tone, it has a real deep meaning. Radical solutions are never the answer and you have to think long enough and hear a lot of perspectives before making a decision. Every change must be gradual. Passion is nice but it can also destroy. When it comes to actions and policy, rationality must be applied.

Morty's parents realize this thanks to their experience. That is why they warn him about going with Planetina. But Morty don't listen to them. He only realizes its mistake when confronted directly to the consequences.

A welcome return to emotive storytelling
finleywade-580807 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is the strongest of the season so far by a landslide. It feels like a return to the more emotionally impactful story telling of seasons 1 & 2 which the series seemed to veer away from in seasons 3 & 4 in favour of being and out and out comedy. The 2 moments that had the most emotional weight were of course beth's comforting of morty at the end of the episode as well as the moment of the camera lingering on the door when morty exits the house. There's the set up earlier of morty comedically slamming the door several times when he's upset with beth which is returned to later when we almost hop on board beths perspective to see morty just slam the door the once as beth waits for him to do it again only for it not to happen because this time its not a joke, morty is serious and genuinley hurt by beth's words. These instances put me in mind of my favourite era of rick and morty of the first 2 seasons, like the ending of rick potion number 9, rixty minutes, auto erotic assimilation ect. But that's not to say that this episode is not full of humour too. I found the b plot with summer and rick hilariously entertaining and loved that it ended with a role reversal for rick and this shows trademark cynism. But at its heart this is a really strong charcter piece for morty which in addition to exploring his relationship with beth and the rise and fall and fall of his romantic relationship with planatina also revisits his growing detachment and jadedness from the premiere with him mercilessly slaughtering poeple just like his grandfather. I hope that this episode is a sign that going forward this season will include both smart comedic one off episodes but will also be balanced with episodes with more character driven and emotionally involved moments. Rick and morty that balances both comedy and tragedy is rick and morty at its best.

Meh.
thomasibach5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not particularly clever or funny, the twist that planetina was a psychopath managed to be both super expected and came out of nowhere, Rick was extremely out of character the whole episode. This was written by a new writer and it shows, the drop in quality from the previous two episodes to this one is massive. It's still Rick and morty so it has some funny lines here and there but this episode can easily be skipped.

The Best Of Season 5 So Far.
ariasisaac-890855 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Each Episode so far has managed to be better than the previous. It's a Rarety with Rick and Morty. I think that the episode perfectly balances both storylines, it gives a slight amount of melancholy and weight to each situation. The Teen romance is needed, as we are Seeing Morty Develop even more than previous seasons. By having Morty Feeling like his life is in desperate need of change, particularly in his Social life is beyond more than what we ask of his character, and the show as a whole. The episode isn't quite as funny as the previous two, for me it doesn't need to be. All the show needs to do is branch off into different topics, and provide strong insight into It's themes. For me that's enough to satisfy, especially if they keep the show at a steady pace of excelling.

Is it me, or is this series more strange than it used to be?
itwperiod5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have the same issue with this episode that I did with episode 1 of this season. The Morty section of the episode was great, one of my favorite plots of this show probably. Planetina was great, the scene at the mine was really good. Definitely the highlight of the episode.

But again, like episode 1, the Rick plot was weird. Again. Kind of like the dragon episode from season 4 level of weird (still a much better episode than that). Some of the jokes felt super random and weird, like one guy on the third planet Rick visits exclaiming about how good gay sex with his Dad is? Seriously?

The main reason I still like this episode is because the plots tie into each other, and even if they don't intersect, I think they belong in the same episode. Also this episode has some comedic hits to balance out the misses.

Highly emotional
shakedatjunk5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Overall a pretty serious episode. Had plenty of gut busting lines of dialogue and visual gags as well. Even the B plot had some seriousness to it believe it or not.

The episode was insane. The action, the absurdity of the sex and dialogue, Morty's psychological journey. Man Morty has been going through some real heartbreaks lately. Morty also isn't playing around at all this season, this dude kills straight up. More with like a Punisher mentality, but still he's ending dudes and he's now a master on the fly with using tech and hand to hand combat. Morty's character development is absolutely nuts.

The love story between him and Planet Tina was obviously weird and wrong but very nice and heartbreaking at the same time. Her descent was awesome. The ending was incredible. Morty and his mom had some real great dialogue with each other and the end with them was emotional.

Lol no way this is the worst episode of R&M so far, there are at least 3-4 weaker episodes in the last season alone.
CesarSoze5 July 2021
The reviewers who are saying this is the worst episode yet are probably the same ones that said last season's train episode was a masterpiece. Yes the episode wasn't the most creative, and used edgy and sex jokes to try and make it funny, but it's still better than a lot of episodes in season 4, especially the train one.

An entirely forgettable episode.
andrewsk810 July 2021
After two strong episodes in a row I guess I can forgive this one being pretty bland. The premise was ok but the story never really went anywhere and felt very rushed at the end. Morty had some funny scenes, and there were a couple of gags in Rick's side story that were not bad, but overall it was probably the least interesting Rick adventure I can remember from the whole show to be honest. Not really much to say other than I doubt I'll remember this episode by the time the next one comes out - I just hope it's back to the level of the first.

Best Episode in the Series in my Opinion
ketankulkarniv5 July 2021
The depth of this episode was really good. It matches the Drama level writing. Loved all the twists & arcs of this story. Glad that this show is maturing from being an edgy comedy show into more of an actual adult entertainment cartoon. So, at the risk of being a bit controversial, I'll definitely rate this show as one of their best work yet.

It's definitely a drift from their original direction but I enjoy the direction where they are headed at.

Mixed Feelings but enjoyable nonetheless
maxglen6 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like this is a difficult episode to talk about. It's not a particularly funny episode, there's a few bits here and there that got a chuckle out of me but the messages that the episode tries to convey are quite cynical and sad and your enjoyment of this episode will stem from wether you're in the mood for that sort of thing. I can imagine if I watched this in a different headspace I'd probably have loved it but I kind of just wanted to have fun so it was a little disappointing. The episode's A plot briefly touches on global warming, breakups and the corporate manipulation of youthful celebrities whilst the B plot focuses on... well. Sex. That's it. The B plot is definitely the thing I liked least about this episode. There's a couple of good lines and jokes in there but it lacks the depth and self awareness of the Planetina and Morty storyline. I'm going to give my initial viewing a 7 but don't be surprised if that changes to a higher rating upon a rewatch. I can see a lot of people really liking this episode, including myself eventually. Hopefully you enjoyed my review, even if you didn't agree with it and I hope you have a lovely day or night wherever you may be.

damn.

Warning: Spoilers
What an unexpectedly deep episode, even though on the surface it's pretty simple.

Morty's rant to his mother actually made me feel really bad for him. It's often clear how they view him but he rarely expresses it, and this time it hit hard. It was also great that he mentions how he's seen so much of the universe already.

You can also somewhat feel for Planetina, while what she did was messed up, her true intentions and purpose of existing is to save the planet, but the truth is that the environment is past saving. The episode also expresses the fact that individuals are in fact not the ones to blame about this, but rather the corporations.

That emotional ending caught me off-guard too...

Hypocrisy.
lurk19975 July 2021
I genuinely like how this episode slaps 'hypocrisy' multiple times, in both A & B stories, and plays off of the most common emotion, love. Ah, love. And the lack of any sense of balancing emotion and reason most people have, NOT just teenagers. I want to point Beth's retort to Morty pointing out a certain similarity, about 15 minutes in the episode. I know people like that. Hell, I think we're all like that.

More so, the ending of the A story, makes an interesting statement around the lines of: 'There's no such thing as unconditional love. '. Because...you guessed it, hypocrisy and just pure stupidity. Same could be applied to the B story, with a couple adjustments. :)

And I won't say anything more, because I rather not go into spoilers, more that I already have, even if vague.

It's definitely, a decent episode. Not my favorite, hence the rating, when it comes to the story itself, but rather the point it's trying to make, and it's underlying structure.

Worst episode in the show?
EddyTheMartian0075 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So far I've been mixed in this season. I had the unpopular opinion of not really liking the season premiere much, but I thought the second episode was much better and classic Rick and Morty. I had regained hope in the season, and even started to appreciate the premiere more, but this episode made me lose hope again.

This episode feels the least like a Rick and Morty episode in terms of the mediocre plot and humor. Not being like a normal episode is necessarily bad, I prefer they experiment more, but this felt it was an average episode of an average animated adult sitcom. The Rick and Summer plot was just bad edgy raunchy sex jokes reminiscent of the dragon episode last season, but I'd argue worse. There's nothing really to mention there apart the final emotional moment between Beth and Summer. Yes there's some depth to the characters here, but these arcs have been done before.

The Captain Planet parody plot was something you'd expect from Family Guy, using the most overdone save the planet jokes. There were some funny moments, but most of the humor felt lazy. The way Morty acts in the relationship with her felt like a regression to current Morty. It feels like this is his first relationship, but we've seen him have a few already. Yes, I get he's young and immature, but we've seen him act a lot more maturely and differently before, hence why this seems like a character regression. It could've worked if handled with more nuance or finesse, but it wasn't in my opinion.

Maybe it would've worked better if it would've been a plot in season 1, not 5. Morty being angry and leaving home because his mother didn't let Planetina move in with him felt so cliched basic. This feels like an arc the show would make fun of. Him not slamming the door multiple times like before was pretty impactful though. I mean I appreciate trying to have more emotion here, but the songs just felt cheesy, and THIS is what they decided to do with Morty's character?! Again it felt like it lacked nuance, and just didn't work for me.

Honestly I'm really trying to look for good things here, but there was almost nothing clever about this episode. I liked some of the shots, like Morty crying, and the ending shot. That's about it though. Many of the jokes and social commentaries have been done before, even in other Captain Planet parodies. To make things worse with Morty's character, he breaks up with Planetina because she goes on a rampage killing people for polluting, when Morty mercilessly killed multiple people earlier. You may say they weren't innocent, but lets not forget that he has killed many people before, like in the premiere for this season he literally killed a whole civilization without remorse. Why doesn't he leave Rick the same way? The theme of hypocrisy can work, but once again it wasn't handled with the necessary finesse and nuance, so it fell flat to me.

In conclusion, this episode used lazy edgy overused jokes, was unoriginal, inconsistent to the characters, and probably filler. Yep I think this might be the worst Rick and Morty episode, and potentially the first truly bad episode in my opinion. The next episode promo isn't giving me much hope either...

(Edit: Yep I was right about the next episode... Oh boy, no surprise that it's the lowest rated episode so far.)

Near-L6 July 2021
Incredible episode that shows how most rick and morty fans are unaware of the weird Roiland sources and get offended by stuff that has been shown before multiple times. This is hilarious and weird and somehow they manage to add feelings to it. Just awesome classic Rick and Morty.

Great episode
Till the third episode, season five already gave us the things that we love about rick and morty in the first episode they showed us some back story and introduced us to some new characters in ep 2 they gave us a more sci fi and action episode and in ep 3 it turned into a family drama and we learned more about the main characters and their attitudes. If the rest of the season be this strong. This season gonna be one of the best seasons.

( sorry for the bad grammer this is not my first language)
