Movie deserved more funding.
fr0w29 August 2021
Movie suffers from poor cinematography, or at the very least sepia/fuzzy grading makes it look worse than it deserves to be. Probably should be remade or at least just reshot.

Pacing can be slow, but worth watching if you like high concept dramas in the same vein of Groundhog's Day or The Lake House then you'll probably like this. Performances are hit and miss, but I'd imagine that Kurt Kuen manage to attract some decent talent due to his heart breaking film Dear Zachery. Makeup is pretty good too.

Give the movie a shot.

I was really drown into it... until...
marcolopes2 September 2012
Gosh!!!! I wish i could give this movie a 10! After seeing "Validation" short movie so many times, i was already a fan of TJ Thyne. Well, he does not disappoint in Shuffle, neither any of the other actors. The plot is clever, the photography is amazing (the B&W really works!), and time flew by as i was living the story... until the VERY END almost ruined it all! I agree with other review here... After those last minutes, i felt like i was slapped on the face, after being swept away! I did not understand the need of that last scene, as everything falls in place without it.

Watch it if you can. It's a very nice piece of cinema art!

P.S: Only after yesterday's episode of "Bones" i realized that Thyne is Dr. Jack Hodgins!! Maybe my head was focused because i was "getting shuffled" latter on!

Low budget and iffy acting but original. I really enjoyed this all the way through...except the last minute. Bad ending. I say B+
cosmo_tiger21 August 2012
"Everyday I wake up at a different age in a different year on a different day of my life and it's scaring the hell out of me. I want it to stop." Lovell Milo (Thyne) is trying to figure out what happened with his life. Lately he has been waking up at different ages at different times in his life. One day he will be 24 fall asleep and wake up 8. Wake up at 92 fall asleep and be 20. On top of that he has narcolepsy so he has no control over when he changes. He wakes up one morning and realizes he is engaged and he is really happy, when he wakes up again its a few years later and his wife is dead. He know is trying to do everything he can to stop that from happening. I was very much looking forward to this movie. One of the most original ideas to come out in a while. I was expecting it to be a little like "Memento" but it was original. The acting is OK and the movie is pretty low budget but I really enjoyed this. It gets to the point where you feel for Lovell and every time he falls asleep you feel sorry for him. The way the movie is set up you honestly can't predict what happens next witch is great and really keeps you interested the entire time. The only thing that ruined the movie is the twist at the very end. Movie is going along great and the the last 30 seconds really took all the air out of it and really disappointed me. I would still recommend this but be warned that the ending isn't satisfying. Overall, a very good low budget movie that is worth seeing but had an ending that almost ruined the movie. I give it a B+.

Really worth seeing!
Jeff_349 January 2014
Really worth seeing! If you like films that make you think - time travel, alternate realities etc. you'll enjoy this.

Every path chosen leads us down a road, the one that we know as our life. What about the paths that we don't choose - do they still lead lives of their own?

Great concept, outstanding acting (who knew the nerd from Bones had that performance in him? ;) and just an amazing job. There could have been a bunch of different ways to end it but that's the fun - the film inspires dialogue, ideas and debate.

Love seeing high quality films on low budgets - gives us all hope.

Long live Independent films!

Cliched but totally enjoyable
beckyb2196 October 2019
I was expecting this to be a time travel thriller/mystery, but it ultimately turned out to be more of an "It's a Wonderful Life" kind of thing. And oddly enough, I wasn't disappointed when it headed in that direction. It definitely has its issues: needless melodrama, cliches all over the place, a twist that isn't too hard to figure out, and an ending that just seems superfluous. However, maybe I just watched this on the right day or something because I found myself sucked in by the sweetness of it. With all the bad stuff going on in the world every day, this movie was a nice little diversion that made me laugh and cry, and left me with a nice case of the warm fuzzies.

Great for most of the first two thirds, not so much after that
cherold23 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has a really clever premise in which a man is essentially living his life out of order; every time he falls asleep, he wakes up at a different, seemingly random date in his life. And while at first there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, he eventually learns that there is a purpose, and that he needs to "pay attention." Turning the whole thing into an odd sort of mystery. It is absolutely fantastic.

And then, about two thirds of the way through the movie, it all falls apart in a silly turn that reveals it to be a sort of knock off of a popular fantasy movie from the '40s. From then on, it feels pedestrian and rather maudlin.

To me, this looks like a film in which the director had an imaginative premise but didn't really know what to do with it, and fell back on something very unimaginative.

A number of people here have complained about the last two minutes of this movie, saying it doesn't fit in with the rest, but I'd say it fits in very well with the part of the movie I don't like, so I'm puzzled by people who like everything except the last two minutes.

I wish the director showed the same consistency in his invention that he did in his brilliant short Validation, but admittedly it's much harder to do that for an entire feature.

In love with this film
armineharmineharmineh4 September 2012
I was mind blown from beginning, when Lovell Milo is introduced, to the very end. I had no idea what I was about to see. I had no expectation when I walked through the doors of the movie theater, at the film festival in Los Angeles. I walked out completely blown away by the synopsis of the story of a man that wakes up at a different age in his life. He can be 26 one day and be 40 years old the next. During the movie he tries to figure out how and why this was happening to him. I was at the edge of my seat throughout the whole film trying to figure it out for him. I could not stop talking about it. Kurt Kuenne made this original story into a beautiful art piece. The actors were brilliant. TJ did a wonderful job captivating the audience and making me feel for his situation. I will watch Shuffle again and again. You have to watch this movie and share this with others because it really has a good message in between it all. You will never forget this film and you definitely will not regret it. Kurt did a wonderful job with writing a breathtaking script and bringing it to life.

Very watchable With Plenty Of Twists.
chris-mcglinchey16 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A strange choice to shoot this film in black and white. This did not detract from the story-line but seems ultimately pointless.

The plot meanders through different life events experienced by Milo and most of the time the journey is enjoyable and sometimes very touching. The plot could have had several different endings and the one I was expecting the most, reuniting with the love of his life would have been satisfactory. The plot revolving around his other family discovered it seems almost by accident, only for me made the final 15 minutes a little drawn out.

The acting was superb and all the characters especially Grace were truly believable.

Overall very watchable.

Modernized version of "It's a Wonderful Life".
Mark_Stone24 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When I first loaded up this movie via Netflix, the description had me thinking I was getting another time-traveling thriller mystery. Boy, am I glad I was wrong.

For those who say this movie had too much of a "sappy" ending, the female lead was STILL his _true_ love. She started the circle of the lead character's life, it was only right that she be there at the "end' of the circle.

If you go into this wanting wild science fiction time traveling... you need to find a different title. If you want a GREAT story, with a fantastic beginning, middle, AND end, this movie is a must see, and the B&W and color scenes mixed in, made it nearly perfect.

A real look on a since fiction thought movie
monaa-1871513 March 2020
When I first saw it I thought it would be The same fanatic Movies that's just rubbing the whole time travel thing That I am fed up to it but it actually takes a very humanitarian look on it and I like the end to justify all that with a very realistic look and makes you wonder how to live your life the fullest and be kind to everyone else so The message is loud and clear

Soap opera with thriller overtones
LuisEduardoGQ22 March 2016
The beginning of the movie hooks you completely, the story presents itself as very interesting and full of mystery, to some extent it reminded me to Memento (2000) or The Butterfly Effect (2004) but as it progresses the film becomes Premonition (2007) mixed with Déjà vu (2006), the cuts in the time-lines are completely lose and end up telling you the story in a linear way until the end that concludes extremely cheesy pretty much like Hallmark Channel style. The message is nice but freezes up there, does not go further, and it is unfortunate since the initial approach was to be an excellent thriller but the script ended up being a soap opera. A real shame.

Warning: Spoilers
First it seemed like it was one of those lower budget films that you endure, but can never get that time back, but then I quickly realized that it well-written and great acting. Next, as he was focused on his father, I thought - "oh,no...just another writer or producer that had a bad relationship with their father and wanted to write/produce something showing how bad they were wronged"...BUT THEN...then, it all started to make sense. The most important lesson of life...you can't change the fact that bad things will happen to you and those around you, but you can change how you respond to those hardships and tragedies; and how you respond, makes all the difference in the world...in your life...and in the lives of everyone around you.

Surprisingly Good
OmStarsong31 August 2022
Took awhile to get the groove, but just got better and better when the pieces all started to come together.. Peeling away the layers to find a sweet, fairly simple message.. KK should be very proud of this creation.. No plot holes, good production value for such a small budget, cinematography was fluid and it didn't resort to frequent dark lighting to cover budget constraints, the acting was pretty good and really an enjoyable watch.. Impressive to have such quality on such a small budget.. Hope he gets more for the next one, tho not sure how he could have improved on this.. It's a wonderful life and we do have the power to change not only the future, but the past.. Kudos..! 🤗

Terrible movie
fg400a15 March 2016
Shuffle just gets some ideas from other movies (Memento, Butterfly effect, and a couple more) and makes an interesting movie for the first 20 minutes or so. Then it goes out of control, gets dark and slow, and you know an uplifting end is coming...sometime. But it just drags on and on until you reach - not an uplifting- but terribly corny ending. And I mean it, the end was just missing bunnies and sweets falling from the sky to make it the corniest ending in film history.

Aside from that, you have to watch an entire hour of a film solely based in a "dreamy" visual effect out of the Big Giant's Looks (anyone with a slight knowledge of After Effects or any film editing software knows what I mean). There's also a "revealing" scene which is supposed to happen in slow motion or halted time...and the background is a bad photograph of a poorly lit street. Anyway, you can see the lights as in a bad night photograph, with hard light streaks and not as it would look on film.

I don't know, but this movie didn't make it for me, neither it's script or visual style.

OMG! Surprisingly riveting!
iforgot1712511 January 2013
Okay, direct to DVD's are usually unoriginal, badly cast, and have lazy performances. This had none of those problems. It had three actors from the show Bones, which usually is terrible when TV actors do a movie between the break, but they were all enjoyable, especially Ty Thyne. Newcomers like Paula Rhodes were excellent, and I felt like the story was beautiful. Despite bad production values you never want to leave the screen. This captures you in ways most films forget to do: story, characters, humor, heartbreak, and balances them so well. While I don't like most dramas for trying too hard this film never seems to force emotion out of you, you give it freely. My only complaint is the lighting department gave it a strange look, and the cameras were bad. Other than that, the film making is surprisingly spot on, check it out, it's on Netflix.

From Your Average Viewer
robertpeck11113 August 2012
"Shuffle" was a fantastic film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats! The plot line is almost similar to the movie "Memento," but I believe Kuenne's film showcases a more life lesson filled story: love, passion, sadness, hardship, joy, trouble, and new beginnings. The movie is made in a way in which the viewers feel for Lovell, the main character, and at the same time are discovering his personality. Once you think you have figured out the purpose of Lovell's existence and you feel as if you have the plot line figured out, the film takes a sharp right into an ending you never expected, but wanted the whole time. This movie is definitely a must see!

An Excellent, Thought Provoking Film
dahlswede30 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The film Shuffle (2011) offers audiences a rare treat: a thought provoking, emotionally gripping story suitable for a family audience. Exceedingly well written, with powerful acting, excellent makeup and special effects, and incredible lighting and photography, this beautiful film both entertains and inspires!

The plot unfolds gradually in the beginning. But soon Shuffle captures the attention of viewers through a series of intriguing events. Populated with fascinating, yet believable characters, the movie contains many outstanding moments. It addresses profound issues within the context of daily events in a masterful way.

The central character encounters a challenge apparently so unusual that he cannot believe his own dilemma. He encounters disturbing clues along the way from unexpected sources. As a narcoleptic, he struggles with temporal issues- but this film goes much deeper, to present a reality extending beyond the superficial confines of time and space.

This movie offers a great treat. Don't miss this one!

Ugh, just sludged through it. Wish I hadn't
Golightly6781 November 2019
Literally Its a Wonderful life, but a version that never should have been made.

I found myself skipping forward 10 sec for the last half. Glad I did. I enjoyed most of the cast but it was dark and weird in a way that detracted from it for me. Oddly slow and quality not quite there but I gave it a shot for 1/2, then realized this was not turning out like I hoped. Looked up reviews... Kept hoping those 9/10 stars weren't lying. They certainly exaggerated it for me. If you seriously love IWL then maybe you'll love this. I didn't.

4 stars for three cast members from Bones in it

A rather juvenile parable
freonpsandoz10 November 2022
I'm not sure that I understood the premise of this movie. Ostensibly, we're seeing fragments of Lovell's life -- out of order, but all real and consistent -- until near the end, when an accident occurs that appears to be in direct contradiction to a fragment shown earlier in the movie. And. If the earlier fragment didn't actually happen, then the ending scene with his father and him makes very little sense. All in all, this film felt more like a parable for juveniles fabricated specifically to reinforce Christian notions of acceptance, forgiveness and selflessness than a film about real human emotions. If you like overly sentimental Christian parables, you'll probably like this movie, but I find them annoying.

What an incredibly talented writer, director and composer Kurt Kuenne is! The movie really kept me intrigued and the music was just beautiful. I really didn't expect much at all from this obviously low budget sci fi movie, but wow did it deliver. It really did have that feel of 'Its a Wonderful life'! Do yourself a favour and get past the low budget look and watch this gem....

Absolutely lovely
miaaacameron30 December 2019
I just fell in love with this film. The description alone sounded unlike anything I've ever watched before, and that's rare, so I decided to give it a chance - so so so glad that I did. This indie is simply unique and although there are some character cliches in the dialogue or the story itself, it's different enough to keep you inside the world that they're presenting to you. Honestly, everything was terrific in my opinion: the scriptwriting told a good story, the acting felt genuine, some of the scenes themselves really played my heartstrings like they were a harp, and lastly, the music...very fitting and most times just purely beautiful. From all of its many aspects of brilliance and originality, there really is just something about this film that you'll end up loving. For me, besides all it's good film components and apart from compliments to the director, there's a humanness to it that I really admire. Whether it be the scenes that make your heart flutter (like the sweetest engagement speech ever) or the ones that make you feel something else, there's no forgetting this wonderful film after you watch it, and that to me is a sign of a truly good movie.

Living Life Out of Order
view_and_review11 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I believe this is part three of my series on Hollywood's demonization of working fathers. Working fathers are usually depicted as either missing or abusive. Lovell Milo's father was both.

This brief movie about a man who wakes up at different intervals of his life is Memento-like and interesting for the first twenty minutes. Lovell (Dylan Sprayberry and T. J. Thyne) was waking up at different ages: 8, 24, 21, 30, 26, etc. While taking pictures at a wedding he got some vague information from a little girl telling him that he's going through this to save someone. Not too long afterwards we got introduced to Dr. Orson Milo (Chris Stone), Lovell's father. He's one of the town doctors and he is a stern man. In Hollywood stern is bad for a father.

One scene was used to really drive home how bad of a father he was. Lovell was ten-years-old in this scene and was taking pictures at the dinner table. His friend and eventual wife, Grace (Elle Labadie and Paula Rhodes), was over for dinner. The doctor told his son to stop taking photos during dinner--a reasonable demand. Moments later his father fell asleep at the dinner table because he suffers from narcolepsy. Lovell used that opportunity to take a picture of his father. We already established that his father is stern. His father woke up seeing the camera in his hands and punished him by pulling the film out.

The meanie.

Then the boy called his dad an a-hole, which prompted the dad to take the camera from him.

More meanness.

It escalated to Lovell trying to grab the camera from his father and the father pushing him down and calling the pictures stupid.

Abuse!

Then, Lovell's ten-year-old girlfriend took it upon herself to scold Lovell's dad. She went upstairs and told him the pictures were not stupid and if he'd just open his eyes then he could appreciate how good they are. She did it with such authority she had to be right.

How do you think the dad took that? He summarily told the sassy little princess to get out of his house. To me it was a very appropriate reaction. Girl! You're ten and this is a family affair. Families fight and we'll settle this without your ten-year-old wisdom.

Grace, the mighty adolescent, didn't stop there. She called the police on the dad alleging abuse. Wow! That is way too far. It's one thing to think you're grown enough to lecture me, but it's another thing entirely to try to get me arrested and break up my family. But this was a small town outside of San Francisco, so maybe I should've expected that.

The father would be cemented as being evil when he would be blamed for Grace's death roughly 20 years later. Basically, Dr. Orson's narcolepsy would be the cause of him missing an urgent page to try to save Grace. Lovell couldn't handle it and wrote his dad off for good.

I know I used up a lot of words describing a small, yet significant part of the film, but it's one of those things that rubs me raw.

The movie was about moving on. After Lovell's wife Grace died he stopped living. When he had a near death experience he spoke to his wife in an astral plane and she told him that the one he had to save was himself. To be honest, that was a relief. I thought he was going through all that to save Grace from dying, which is a repeated theme--love so strong it brings someone back to life. Thankfully, that was not it. He had to fix himself and pull himself out of the rut he put himself into. So, even though the ending was better, the movie had already upset me so much that there wasn't much they could do to rescue it.

"Shuffle" is a touching sci-fi roller-coaster ride of emotions
ersinkdotcom15 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I never feel more like an idiot than when I write a movie off or judge the proverbial book by its cover and then watch it only to discover what a gem I almost passed up. The indie film "Shuffle" is a perfect example of my narrow-mindedness. What sounds like a low-budget straight-to-DVD knock-off of "The Butterfly Effect" is so much more and is teeming with heart that movie could only dream of mustering up.

A man named Lovell Milo begins waking up in different eras of his life. He's living out of order and aware of it. Cryptic messages from individuals in each time period tell him to pay attention so he can help save someone's life.

Director Kurt Kuenne perfectly captures on film so much genuine emotion it's almost overwhelming to watch at times. Not overwhelming in a bad way. It's in that roller-coaster ride kind of a way. I can only compare viewing "Shuffle" to living an entire life and its experiences in an hour and a half. Every emotional sensation you could possibly encounter runs through your body as you take it in.

All of the actors in the film give outstanding performances. TJ Thyne ("Bones") pours his entire inner self into the role of Lovell Milo. I can't imagine how hard it was for each actor to keep up with what season in their character's life they were emulating at any given moment.

Dylan Spraberry does an incredible job portraying Lovell as a young boy. It had to be difficult because he plays a child who knows the future but at his actual age. This isn't a remake of "Freaky Friday" or "Vice Versa." He's 11 or 12 years old but knows what the future holds for him. Taking on a role that complex is a heavy load for any young actor to bear.

"Shuffle" is an uncommon film to find these days. It's a sci-fi time travel thriller which draws comparisons to movies like "The Butterfly Effect" and "Memento." Unlike many films of this nature, it ends on a high note. The journey to its conclusion is troubled and dramatic but the finale is exhilarating and doesn't leave you despondent. It's as close to a thoroughly balanced film as you can get these days.

Absolutely Outstanding!
mr-hamsterguy9 April 2012
This is the story of a narcoleptic photographer who wakes up each day at a different stage in his life. He learns that there is a purpose to this nightmare hes living and he must save someone. I wont give anymore away but I will say that the ending is quite satisfying as is the entire movie. T.J. Thyne plays Lovell Milo the title character whose names sounds like its being being said backwards, an outstanding job. There are also incredible performances from Chris Stone and Tamara Taylor. But the show is almost stolen by Paula Rhodes who plays Thyne's lifelong friend and love interest. This movie is inspiring, compelling and one of a kind. I would recommend it to all around movie buffs and casual movie watchers alike. Shuffle is an experience like no other.
