fun until midway

Pregnant Agnes grew up Catholic and is presently more or less Atheist. She happily accepts her boyfriend Levi's marriage proposal. He informs her that she's converting to Judaism under the guidance of progressive Rabbi Cohen.

The first half is a fun little indie. Genevieve Adams is the writer, director, and star of the movie. I wonder if this is a bit of semi-biography. It does feel like a small piece of her life. I like it until feminist Rabbi Cohen does a four-minutes sermon on the Palestinians. The problem is that it's even brought up. It's a detour into real politics which suppresses the fun comedic tone. The second half is less fun overall. The grave is weirdest moment. It's trying to be slapstick and it does it badly. Why is a very pregnant woman jumping into a grave? I can imagine that Genevieve thought that it's a funny visual joke. The movie takes a detour at the midway point. I never really re-engaged with it.
