After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

What happens when a person tries to get rid of evil spirits, and their own personal demons, without inviting new ones in? The result is the new film on Shudder, Night’S End.
Starring Geno Walker, Kate Arington, Michael Shannon, Isaac Dees, Felonious Munk, Daniel Kyri, Theo Germaine, director Jennifer Reeder provides fans a true mix of fun and horror in the story of an anxious shut-in who unwittingly moves into a haunted apartment and hires a mysterious stranger to perform an exorcism that in the end takes an unfortunate horrific turn.
Meant to be a character study of a man choosing to live a claustrophobic life in isolation, his new occupation as a YouTube wanna-be sensation goes south and quickly. Trying to emulate paranormal channel “Dark Corners”, Ken Barber (Walker) transforms his fledgling channel from “Ken’s Lawn Life Tips” to one filled with spooky videos,...

During the last two years, isolation and its many horrors have haunted everyone. Naturally, genre filmmakers are best equipped to see the creative potential in pandemic fears — and its limitations. In her latest feature, prolific horror auteur Jennifer Reeder makes mighty use of both, crafting an inventive ghost story for the video call era. Arriving at a dramatically zany conclusion, “Night’s End” follows the unraveling of an aimless divorcé through his misguided attempts at establishing a YouTube presence. Taking place entirely within the confines of his dreary bachelor pad, Though the film falters under the confines of a small budget and Covid-safe crews, thanks to Reeder’s ingenuity and love of classic horror, she strong arms it over the finish line to an enjoyably wacky finale.

A last minute addition to Frightfest’s 2022 Glasgow Film Festival line-up and now available on Shudder, Night’s End is an occult thriller with a heavy dose of humour. It centres on Ken (Geno Walker), an agoraphobic alcoholic who is trying to get his life back together and start his own YouTube channel providing marketing tips. When a stuffed bird falls off a shelf behind him during an online conversation with a friend, Ken recounts a story about his flat being haunted, and the friend suggests that there’s a much bigger audience interested in that – but turning to an exorcist to address the situation leads to danger. It’s the latest work by Jennifer Reeder, whom I spoke to previously about her festival hit Knives And Skin, so I reconnected with her to discuss it and began by asking about the...

Do you ever just want the night to end, but the night’s end seems to never come? This is the epitome of Jennifer Reeder’s apt Night’s End. The Knives and Skin director, with writer Brett Neveu, craft a film about one man’s horrific night. But what is, at first, a frightening, introspective, and isolated ghost story, takes an unfortunate nose dive. The audience is suddenly content and relieved at the night’s end, more so than even the protagonist.
A horror film needs to nail the atmosphere, and Reeder nails that spookiness immediately as she directs Christopher Rejano’s camera to move slowly towards a door. Like a spirit floating just above the ground and lingering outside in the hopes of being let in. It creaks as it opens into a dimly lit, newly occupied apartment. The unemployed divorced father who lives there, Ken (Geno Walker), is found counting down from 10. Then,...

About halfway through director Jennifer Reeder and writer Brett Neveu’s Night’s End, a character explains to Ken Barber (Geno Walker) that the ghost haunting his apartment may in fact be haunted herself. Colin Albertson (Lawrence Grimm), the occult author whose book inspired Ken to create a “spirit jar” in hopes of exorcising his unwanted guest, details research into the ghost’s identity which would point to her own mother becoming a demonic presence desperate to torture her child’s trapped soul in a “ghost loop.” While that’s a whole lot of over-the-top nonsense on its surface, the act itself proves a metaphorical interpretation of Ken’s own destructive cycle. His divorced father moved cities for a fresh start only to find himself suffering from a reclusive lifestyle of fear and regret.

Ken Barber is just managing to keep himself together. Two years after alcoholism ruined his marriage, he's moved to another city and shut himself in a lonely apartment. He's trying to earn a living by making life-tip videos for youtube, while tending to his orchids and doing some amateur taxidermy. But something is wrong; strange noises are waking him up, objects moving on their own, and when he finds out his place was the site of a violent murder, he jumps to some (perhaps logical) conclusions. Jennifer Reader (Knives & Skin) is no stranger to people on the edge in odd places, and she takes the audience to places that have become un-intimate through the uncanny and the terrifying in Night's End. One man's attempt...

Jennifer Reeder is an artist and filmmaker who received an Mfa from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Reeder wrote and directed Knives and Skin (2019), a surreal murder mystery about a missing teenager, which is reminiscent of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Her films tend to have a focus on themes of trauma, relationships, and coping mechanisms. Her new horror film, Night’s End, tells the story of a haunting and is a compelling exploration of mental illness and isolation. The film stars Geno Walker as Ken Barber, who is divorced and living alone in an apartment. He never leaves the house and frequently talks with his ex-wife and his best friend on video chat. Ken follows a strict routine and has some unusual hobbies, which he hopes will help him control his severe anxiety and insomnia. When he begins to believe he is being haunted by the spirit...

Jennifer Reeder’s bonafides as a horror director — particularly one attuned to the terrifying travails of the female teenage experience, a la her breakout “Knives and Skin” — are unimpeachable, but she’s never been eager to do the same thing twice. When it came time to tackle her next feature film, Reeder was searching for something new, and a little scary: putting her own stamp on a story about not just a man, but the kind of man too often unable to express his own fears.
In the Shudder-produced “Night’s End,” written by Brett Neveu, Reeder found exactly what she was looking for, a fresh injection of perspective and theme that the genre needs now.
“I had been looking for a script with an adult male as a lead, partially because I had an idea of what I could do through a kind of feminist lens with a particular kind of male lead,...

Spring is almost here - so close - and already our hearts and minds are being asked to yearn for October! We get it, Halloween is the horror community's Christmas. We'd tell you, allergies permitting, to head outside this April and smell the flowers but next month's lineup from Shudder could be reason enough to help you dodge pollen season this year. The lineup of originals is already top notch stuff. Shudder original series Cursed Films and The Last Drive In will return. Original films include Night's End, The Cellar and Virus 32. We can personaly vouch for the neat little Canadian thriller See For Me; it's excellent. If you're hankering for some great classics then the first week alone has more than...

"It's really happening. None of it is fake." Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Night's End, the latest from director Jennifer Reeder. It's playing on Shudder at the end of March. An anxious shut-in moves into a haunted apartment, hiring a stranger to perform an exorcism which quickly takes a horrific turn. Pretty vague description. This seems to be another pandemic thriller, focusing on one man alone in his apartment while everyone else connects with him digitally. A realistic take on Zoom horror with "what if this was really happening to him?" The film stars Geno Walker, with Michael Shannon, Kate Arrington, Daniel Kyri, Theo Germaine, Lawrence Grimm, Morgan S. Reesh, and also Felonious Munk. This looks quite creepy! Some nice horror vibes. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jennifer Reeder's Night's End, direct from YouTube: In Night's End, an anxious shut-in...

Just a couple more weeks until we start seeing the backside of Old Man Winter, we hope. Apart from Bewaring the Ides of March and praying that pubs will remain open for Let's All Pretend We're Irish Day, for horror fans Shudder has another whopping lineup of titles coming up. The month starts off with Dasha Nekrasova's The Scary of Sixty-First. During the month three other films that we have written about leading up to this month - The Seed, The Spine of Night and Night's End - will all premiere on the streamer. The other premiere next month is role-playing horror flick, The Bunker Game. There will also be a block of French new wave horror flicks coming for subscribers in the...
