Great premise. Bad execution.
Avwillfan898 March 2022
I've seen many movies similar to this - the biggest and most popular recent one being Promising Young Woman - that have invoked the modern day revamp of rape-revenge flicks. Sometimes focusing on teenagers, Sometimes young women.

The film uses plot points from the ABC series Dietland, the more lighthearted feminist queer comedy Itty Bitty Titty Commitee and the heightened world of PYW.

And have made an unoriginal, piss-poor attempt at creating something interesting and thought-provoking.

The characters here are wafer thin cardboard cutouts and box checkers designed to make you feel sympathy for them, cheer for them or at the least find them charming and inspirational. That promise is not delivered.

Mark Vanderhill whines about women and minorities being "superstars by default" Sadly, that's exactly whom you're supposed to root for. POC protagonists who should indeed bring an interesting depth, yet are thinly layered, along with the main antagonists.

It basically boils down to: men are bad, toxic assholes and the women are traumatised angry victims who resort to violence and intimidation.

What's upsetting is that these things are really happening to women all over the world. To see these complex issues watered down yet again is disappointing.

It's no good to just shut down sexist behaviour as soon as you see it. There has to be an exploration as to why these men are the way they and try to prevent it in future.

Just ok
gab-675995 March 2022
This movie was nothing special. It felt extremely low budget but with some charm. The actors abilities to act felt forced so it made it hard for me to like this one. I guess it was ok for a one time watch but I really didn't enjoy it. As a women I have no point of views in this movie. I just came to be entertained and that didn't happen. So I will not recommend this movie and I myself will not be watching it again. I still think the chick from Tragedy Girls and Hudgens are sexy af though.

lol. This is terrible
jaimegonzales2109 March 2022
Wow! I read the reviews but still expected this to have something worthy of viewing. Was I ever wrong. This is one of the top three worst movies I have ever watched, despite having a decent cast. The story sucks, the directing sucks and the execution is pretty bad.

Director Beats Women
greisa-4657421 April 2022
Eamon O'Rourke directed this and then showed his true colors by beating a trans women at Clara's in Brooklyn, so I guess this movie really was just a virtue signal to boost his career.

Pointless, slow paced and downright rubbish...
paul_haakonsen14 March 2022
Right, well the cover for this 2021 thriller from writer and director Eamon O'Rourke is what lured me into watching it. Had I heard about "Asking for It" prior to watching it? No. So I wasn't sure what I was in for here, but the cover was interesting and thus I opted to watch it.

And you can't judge a movie by its cover. While "Asking for It" is labeled as a thriller, this was more of a female-empowered revenge movie. Not much of a thriller, and this is where writer and director Eamon O'Rourke lost me along the way. I was expecting a rather different type of movie, and was instead served a cold dish of movie that didn't fall into my flavor.

The storyline in "Asking for It" was a swing and a miss in terms of providing me with any sense of entertainment or enjoyment. It was a mixture and combination of slow narrative and lack of anything interesting that killed off the movie for me, so it never really had a snowballs chance in Hell. And this is certainly not a movie that I would recommend anyone run out and waste their money, time or effort on.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in "Asking for It", and that is usually something I like when I watch movies. But since the cast virtually had nothing worthwhile or interesting to work with here in terms of script, characters, dialogue or action, then the movie was just a dud. I am sure that the acting performances were fair enough, I just didn't have an interest in it.

Sadly, then the movie's cover was the most exciting and interesting thing about this entire ordeal.

My rating of the 2021 movie "Asking for It" lands on a two out of ten stars.

Very Distorted
westsideschl15 July 2022
As a contributor to female education around the world & other human rights issues I found this vigilante movie to be dishonest. Very stereotypical generalizations that are seriously misleading if not plain wrong. We have mostly Black female vigilantes fighting back at white males who are shown as female subjugators, rapists, female genocide perpetrators, and police (all white) as rights' abusers. Black males were shown as female rights' protectors. White male quote while firing his gun at target: "Every species on the planet does it. The male exerts dominance over the female." White males form a MFM (Men's First Movement) organization to "fight" for control. Cheaply made production dominated by numerous & pointless scene disrupting photo flashing montages.

Not as i expected
Funlive7 March 2022
It was bad directing, and bad writing but it might be good if there was sone adjustments it can be typical for women rights.

What I liked about it that bring to the view there is men against abuse women.

Could have been better but very good for the emotions
subxerogravity9 March 2022
This movie popped up on my Instagram feed and I wanted to check it out. Kiersey Clemons, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp, Ezra Miller. This was a stellar cast in my book, so for that I wanted to see what it was about.

It was good intent, good actors, and I loved the messaged. I'm a believer of vengeance and this movie is perfect for that. Not really a good idea to do what these ladies did but it may help if you watch them do it (Very Batman)

Its delivery does not click like I should. All the actors give a good performance but it's not coming together. It gets to a point where I start to lose interest.

But I still liked it.

A breath of fresh air

Movies like this one and "Promising Young Woman" are issuing us into a new age of film that takes a stance against many of the types of people who are prematurely leaving negative reviews for the film. Challenging the film industry by issuing rebutted against the toxic masculine culture giving opportunities to celebrate these women and the work of the director is grounds for high praise.

Better then I expected
jatstar-112-8838915 March 2022
I'm glad I didn't let the negative reviews stop me from giving this a go.

Yes it's low budget, but it was still a decent movie.

I understand some people may not find this movie relatable, but for me it was.

I could relate to quite a few of the different characters and what they went through happens to multiple women every day. Perhaps their reaction wasn't true to life, but perhaps it is.

I hope that people watch this and keep their minds open.

The movie moves quickly, a lot happens in a short amount of time. I almost felt like it could have been fleshed out into a mini series.

I guess it's the sort of movie that will make you feel a sense of empowerment or make you defensive and angry, depending on your point of view.

Good intentions can go wrong
kosmasp1 November 2022
No pun intended - the premise of the movie or the message or whatever you want to call it ... well it is a fine cause. It does point to something that is relevant to say the least. It is something our society has not been able to get rid of. I am not sure how the future will look like and how genders are going to treat each other. I do know that there is way too much toxicity in many aspects of life and unfortunately some have made it almost fashionable to be mean to others and not even apologize for it.

Of course there were other instances where it went the other way altogether ... still the amount of abuse women have to endure in general ... not cool. The title also is a pun by the way ... no one is asking for it obviously. The movie does go a bit in a different direction that I suspected not showing us the victim side too much, but the reaction to it ... there is potential in this or rather was I reckon ... depending on how able you are to suspend your disbelief, you will like this more or less.

Very disjointed
Sweetactress0416 July 2022
The main theme had promise, but it ended up being a hodge podge of great actors trying to make subpar dialog work. The characters were very one dimensional caricatures of strong ideals. Beautifully shot, but sadly, unremarkable.

Tried to be something like promising young woman...but it just didn't land. Waaaaay too aggressive with the message they were trying to portray. Great acting in moments though!!

Honest review of Asking For It...
Vises15 June 2022
When a movie that deals with current, critical and provocative issues is beat down this badly in the reviews, I feel like I've got to give it an honest shot myself...

It's really unfortunate that movies like this get downvoted just for the sake of pushback to an idea that doesn't conform with your own world views, as myopic as they may be.

This 'what if...' scenario shows a group of women who have reached the end of their rope watching a continuous cycle of abuse towards women on many levels decide to take matters into their own hands, in a vigilante style.

There's nothing wrong with the premise... of course, the delivery is exaggerated in many regards but, as a piece of art (film being the medium), it's a solid movie that certainly doesn't deserve as low a rating as it's received so far.

If anything, it's an above average production with heart, even if not for everyone.

The pendulum that has swung in favour of a particular swathe of society for many generations is challenged here in specific ways and swings the pendulum the opposite direction. Again, nothing wrong with that.

In order to find balance in anything, expect agitation... I may not agree wholeheartedly with the extremes of cancel culture and all that comes with it, BUT on the path to solution, one must first come to terms with UNDERSTANDING. And that's what this film asks... for those who haven't looked or haven't cared to look, to try to understand the constant frustration and helplessness that many women live with on a daily basis and the simple joys that some will find in celebrating counter-culture just to feel safe and accepted after many a horrible fact.

The movie is even more pointed given the recent circumstances that actor Ezra Miller has found himself in.

It's certainly worth a look and, as is the nature of art, if it makes you feel something... anything, whether good or bad, it has served a purpose... whether it plants a seed, stirs conversation, or even just makes you take a step back and question past, present or future actions.

This is a rock-solid 7/10 all-day, everyday.

Haters gonna hate
gregorybates-710715 July 2022
Thus is such a bad ass film. The ones who hate this are the ones that agree with the WS patriarchal society. Great women going after the men who did harm is a plus in my book. Power is defined by the storyteller. It sure is. Love this film alot. But big ups to Vanessa Hudgens cause if she wasn't in this I probably wouldn't have given this a chance.

Oh
mentiramivida611 October 2023
Well I didn't know about the 1 star comment so I looked into it (out DOT com/news/2022/4/21/director-eamon-orourke-reportedly-punched-trans-comedian-grace-freud). I also didn't know about this Ezra person but I did know something always rubbed me the wrong way when they'd appear in something I'd be watching. I normally don't care for news to affect what I read or watch but the message of the men and now knowing facts on two of the irl humans I bumped my rating down (op 10). Seems now the creator of this may have just used this to let out their true nature whilst trying to appease others to get their foot into the door.

This movie pissed me off but was full of characters taking charge and using their well justified rage to teach others manners. And all that action and well executed acting made me originally post a 10 rating. However as stated above it sucks when people use the power they have or might have to spew hate and or justify their ignorance.

Original, relevant, empowering and realistic
ColleenDJ6 March 2022
This was non-stop interesting to from start to finish. I guess the style isn't to everyone's taste? The cinematography was outstanding and direction incredibly original without being jarring or taking you out of the moment. I thought the story did a great job of creating the evil archetypes and the young femme heroines were pretty fun to watch. It's not subtle - it's not supposed to be. Not sure why all the bad reviews.

Fresh and current story with a history.
corneliusroz24 March 2022
The current world is somewhat men vs women since men having existential crisis when women actually proved themselves to be successful. It's quotes like beta male is more popular idk what it means but the cult shown here is very evident at present.

Feminism helped women get rights, to work paid jobs, to give divorce, to vote and a lot of things men took for granted. Now the women are being successful while men thinks they're taking their jobs and their place. It's same as foreigners thinking immigrants taking their jobs. So they got mad at feminists and started making up false information and highlighted crazy man hating feminism as the actual feminist image. Which cause other men to join their cult. It's hilarious because as a man im not threatened by a women because if you feel women are weak and they threaten your existence then im sorry you're the weak. And weak people will dislike my review here. Highly recommend the movie.

Feels like something I've seen!!!
RoyMince28 September 2023
This movie feels like a part two or even came from the movie, set it off with Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett. With that being said, the originality doesn't really feel there, but yet the film is Pat with Chong. Some of the actors in this movie are becoming main street names in present day, and this feels like one of those movies that was a steppingstone towards that success, which is always a plus. Overall, this film is worth consideration simply because there are some beautiful women on camera and the acting is better than expected which is always a good thing. I definitely recommend this film to the viewer.
