When Quinn Shephard (indie hit “Blame” and internet satire “Not Okay”) set out to adapt Rebecca Godfrey’s bestselling narrative non-fiction book “Under the Bridge,” about the 1997 murder of teenager Reena Virk, one key aspect of the book stood out to her beyond the crime.
“I was so struck by how gentle [the book] was,” Shephard told IndieWire during a recent interview. “And there was a real sensitivity to the way that it approached the holistic story, as well as all of the characters. It was a very beautiful book; it was very poetic. I was really shocked that a story that was so dark and so brutal could have so much tenderness. [It’s] really a story of childhood and coming of age.”

Lily Gladstone is getting sent down “Under the Bridge” to see about this murder.
Gladstone is following up her Academy Award-nominated breakout performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” with “Under the Bridge,” a Hulu limited series premiering April 17. Hulu released a trailer for the gloomy true crime drama on Monday.
The trailer, with its eerie score, dark dialogue about missing and murdered young women, and focus on an uneasy partnership between two investigators, feels like it could be part of the “True Detective” universe. Gladstone plays a local cop haunted by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, and Riley Keough (who also serves as executive producer) plays a journalist writing a book on the case.
Here’s the official synopsis from Hulu: “‘Under the Bridge’ is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join...

Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough are joining forces for Hulu true crime series “Under the Bridge.”
Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, “Under the Bridge” revisits the 1997 true story of 14-year old outcast Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Reena was found dead in Craigflower Bridge in Saanich, British Columbia after being beaten. The show examines the hidden world of the teenagers accused of Reena’s murder as the truth comes to light as to who the unlikely killer really was. The series is part of Hulu’s stacked Spring 2024 slate.
Gladstone stars as fictional police officer Cam Bentland investigating the case. Keough plays author Godfrey as she struggles to balance her own psyche as she reports on Reena’s killing. “Euphoria” star Javon “Wanna” Walton, Chloe Guidry, Izzy G., Aiyana Goodfellow, and Ezra Faroque Khan co-star with “The Good Wife” alum Archie Panjabi.

Who killed Reena Virk? The teenager’s murder and subsequent investigation are at the heart of the new crime series “Under the Bridge.” Hulu’s limited series adapts Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the crime, a case that would shock Canada during the late ’90s. 29-year-old wunderkind writer/director Quinn Shephard heads up the project, also acting as executive producer. The multi-hyphenate previously helmed the dramedy-thriller film “Not Okay.”

Since the pandemic, Black female-driven content with universal appeal has found a home on Hulu. Stepping away from the cliched stories that have too often defined others’ efforts, each new project from the streamer, be it “The 1619 Project” or the recent “The Other Black Girl,” grows increasingly more ambitious. “Black Cake,” produced by Oprah Winfrey, pushes the boundaries even further by centering on a biracial, immigrant woman’s experience.
Adapted from Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times-bestselling novel of the same name, the sweeping eight-episode family drama from showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar revolves around a Jamaican Chinese woman who has lived an epic life spanning various parts of the globe. The problem is: Her past has been kept hidden from her children. Only through a flash drive of audio recordings played after her death do they learn that they know very little of her story. Six years passed without a new film from director Uwe Boll, a filmmaker some would describe as infamous, while others would say he’s legendary. Then last year he made Hanau (Deutschland im Winter – Part 1), about a real-life mass murderer. Now he’s back with the police drama First Shift, and while the movie isn’t expected to be released until sometime in 2024, a trailer has already arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Boll wrote, directed, and produced First Shift, which is described as being a gripping police drama with the spirit of a classic road movie, taking us on a soul-stirring journey through the vibrant streets of New York City into the depths of our own reality and the innermost corners of our souls. Immersing viewers in a high-octane adventure delving into the lives of dedicated law enforcement officers.

Director Meko Winbush’s debut feature film comes in the form of the sci-fi thriller Gray Matter. Interestingly, the film debuted on streaming giant Max on the same day as the docuseries Project Greenlight, which shows us the production of this film from start to finish. It is a product of the show that allows budding directors to create a film with the help of mentors and everything else they need. This year, it reboots with the likes of producer Issa Rae alongside Kumail Nanjiani and Gina Prince-Bythewood. While the show may be something that piques interest because of the premise and the nature of reality TV, the movie is rather lackluster and has nothing new to offer its audience. In a time when the sci-fi genre has grown tremendously, there’s really nothing original about Gray Matter. The film follows a young girl named Aurora who dreams of normalcy...

For aspiring filmmakers, appreciators of how the sausage is made and lovers of atypically blunt reality messiness, “Project Greenlight: A New Generation” is essential viewing. From the Max reboot’s welcome focus on inclusive expansion, its gutsy willingness to show its subjects’ warts in extreme close-up and ultimate promise for a better tomorrow, this is easily the best season of the reality show, which first aired in 2001, and will easily be the best reality show of the year.
Gone are original producers and sometimes on-camera superstars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In their place are new producers and mentors Kumail Nanjiani, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Issa Rae (who even makes a joke about Damon and Affleck “rolling in their graves”). Their goal is simple on paper, and borderline Sisyphean in execution: Give a first-time feature filmmaker a low-budget genre film to make, and document the entire process from pre-production to premiere.

The Maximum Truth brain trust of David Stassen and Ike Barinholtz have a history.
The two Chicagoans first met each other at summer camp when they were 7 years old, and they eventually became best friends as teenagers. Shortly thereafter, they formulated a plan to get their college degrees and then take a crack at Hollywood as writing and producing partners, with Barinholtz also serving as the comedic performer of the duo. Their story is very similar to Canada’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, making Stassen and Barinholtz their American counterparts, a comparison that Rogen himself supported recently. So Rogen’s involvement in Stassen and Barinholtz’s Maximum Truth and their Hulu limited series History of the World, Part II makes all the more sense.
In Maximum Truth, Stassen’s feature directorial debut, Barinholtz plays an attorney and “political consultant” named Rick Klingman. He’s Saul Goodman if Saul Goodman was completely ineffective,...

Ayo Edebiri's performance as talented sous-chef Sydney on "The Bear" has made her into a breakout star. In an August 2022 interview with TVLine, she addressed the future of the show long before the debut of season two on June 22 of this year, expressing her excitement for the next iteration of the restaurant at the center of the story. "I think it'll be really exciting to see the crew of The Beef, now The Bear, go into another business venture instead of fixing the problems and paying off debt," she said. "I'm excited for the very ridiculous things I am sure will ensue because of that."
One thing that she prepared fans wouldn't happen in the second season, though, was any sort of romantic relationship between her character and Jeremy Allen White's head chef Carmy. Addressing fans who have shipped the pairing, Edebiri said, "I don't want to rain on anybody's parade,...

Anxiety-ridden Millie is on her way from Wellington to NYC for an internship at a prestigious architecture firm when a moment of panic causes her to miss her flight - so she pretends to be there anyway while camping out in New Zealand. Last night saw the broadcast of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. However, it would not be a usual broadcast with a live taping. Due to the current unrest of the Writer’s Guild strike, many attendees had chosen not to participate in solidarity with the ongoing protest. This prompted the once music-centric channel to air a pre-taped special.
Bruce Gillmer, the President of programming at Paramount Global and EP on the award show, stated, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.

Scream VI was named best movie on Sunday night at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which pivoted at the last minute from live to pretaped due to the writers strike,
The film also won best fight for Courteney Cox (as Gale Weathers) and the killer Ghostface, the latter of whom accepted both awards via pretaped video.

The show was held amid the ongoing writers strike, which led host Drew Barrymore to drop out in a show of support for the striking scribes.

Zoey Deutch, who starred in Set It Up and Not Okay, has joined Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in Clint Eastwood’s latest feature, Juror No. 2.
The Warner Bros. legal drama is eyeing to shoot this summer. Per the studio’s official logline, Juror No. 2 follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma…one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict — or free — the wrong killer.
Collette is playing the prosecutor, while Deutch will play Hoult’s wife.
Jonathan Abrams wrote the script, which had been floating through Hollywood for 15 years before Eastwood decided last year that he wanted to make it as his follow-up to Cry Macho. The director is also producing the movie with Adam Goodman, the former production president of Paramount-turned-producer who now runs his own banner,...

Exclusive: Jorge Vargas (‘Snowpiercer’), Tanaya Beatty (‘Yellowstone,’), and Skywalker Hughes (‘Joe Pickett’) are rounding out the previously announced cast of Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton’s In The Blink of an Eye starring Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs. Principal photography has now commenced in British Columbia.
The movie follows three storylines, spanning thousands of years, intersect and reflect on hope, connection and the circle of life. Jared Ian Goldman (Ingrid Goes West, ‘Russian Doll’) produces the pic written and executive produced by Colby Day (Spaceman).
“From the first read I knew Colby Day’s script was special,” said Stanton, “and it has only become more rarified of a project as our team has formed. What a privilege to have such an ideal cast and crew realize this beautiful story.”
“Andrew is a visionary artist whose unique gifts as a storyteller shine in this beautiful film,” added Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

Searchlight Pictures has set Eva Longoria’s feature directorial debut Flamin’ Hot for a simultaneous release on Hulu and Disney+ on June 9.
The first-ever dual platform release by Disney follows the film having a world premiere at SXSW. Flamin’ Hot will debut on Disney+ internationally.
Disney-owned Searchlight has seen other movie titles like Fire Island, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and Not Okay go straight to Hulu as a sister brand to the family-friendly Disney+ as it became a home for more adult fare from Disney brands. Producer of “Something From Tiffany’s” Lauren Neustadter credits costars Kendrick Sampson (“Insecure”) and Zoey Deutch, as well as casting director Ronna Kress, with transforming the story of the film, adapted from Melissa Hill’s book that came out over a decade ago.
“I read it when it was in galley [advanced, not finished format] and it’s a delightful book with an A+ movie premise. I immediately gravitated towards the premise of the book,” Neustadter told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I thought the characters were incredibly charming, but it wasn’t the kind of thing where there was a lot of specificity around the roles and the backgrounds of each of the characters. It was written in a bit of a different moment in time, and so we were imagining the script now, and we were imagining making the movie now. It was just something that I think we wanted to make sure that we were incredibly inclusive.

‘Something from Tiffany’s’ Review: A Warm but Weak-Spirited Rom-Com that Isn’t Worthy of Zoey Deutch
Twenty-eight-year-old actress Zoey Deutch was either born at the wrong time to star in romantic comedies, or at the perfect time to redeem them. If only it were both. If only people were still making rom-coms worthy of the light and lovability that Deutch — who previously flirted with the genre in Netflix’s “Set It Up,” between spikier roles in the likes of “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “Not Okay” — is more capable of bringing to them than just about anyone this side of Meg Ryan.
But they’re not, and nowhere is that more obvious than in like “Something from Tiffany’s,” which gives Deutch a chance to shine at full-wattage during a movie that can hardly muster the energy to power a string of Christmas lights. I guess it’s fitting that her character is more of a Hanukkah kind of girl, because the fire she brings to the role...

There’s nothing like New York City during Christmas: the packed streets of Soho and Midtown, the tourist-dense holiday market in Bryant Park, the unexpected bursts of snow.
There’s magic in the air, no doubt, but chaos too, as is evident in “Something From Tiffany’s,” a new streaming Christmas romantic comedy, a genre already rich in entries. A mix-up between two boyfriends at the iconic jewelry store Tiffany leads to a mix-up for the ages: one woman’s engagement ring winds up on the wrong hand.
At the helm of “Something From Tiffany’s” is ingenue du jour Zoey Deutch (“Not Okay”) as Rachel, a strong-willed, career-oriented baker who tolerates her longtime tattoo artist boyfriend Gary. He’s often disappointing her — showing up late or missing an obligation — forcing him to make up for his own incompetence with gifts and gestures of affection.

Amazon Studios has unveiled the first stills from its holiday romantic comedy Something from Tiffany’s, starring Zoey Deutch (Not Okay) and Kendrick Sampson (Insecure), which is poised to launch globally on Prime Video on December 9th.
The Amazon Original, based on Melissa Hill’s novel of the same name, watches as a woman’s life is upended, when an engagement ring meant for someone else leads her to the person she’s meant to be with.
Nothing compares to the magic and excitement of the holidays in New York City, where the streets blaze with lights, windows dazzle, and a special box from Tiffany could change the course of a person’s life. Or several lives. Rachel and Gary (Deutch and Ray Nicholson) are happy enough, but not quite ready for that big commitment. Ethan and Vanessa (Sampson and Shay Mitchell), the perfect picture, are just about to make it official.
