Some of Taylor Swift‘s biggest hits were co-written with her longtime pal Jack Antonoff — and now the superstar is giving fans a behind the scenes look at their writing process.
In the final episode of The Making of a Song series, the entertainers collaborate in the studio on “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” which appears to be a song at least partly inspired by her ongoing feud with Kanye West.
People has an exclusive first look at the episode (airing in full Tuesday), which features Swift and Antonoff, 33, creating the sound of a children’s choir.

The unpacking of “mother!” continues, as fans and foes continue to discuss the film’s biblical and environmental themes. Darren Aronofsky‘s movie is a molotov cocktail to the standard fare at the multiplex, and an undeniably intense cinematic experience, no matter where you opinion ultimately falls on the picture. And as you might guess, making it was no walk in the park, and for Jennifer Lawrence, once was enough.

Oh, Lucy Hale packs so much inspiration into that tiny petite stature of hers!
And this week, she absolutely killed it with her fashion. Dare we say, she slayed. Yes, that’s a word we’d swore we’d never use, but if we were to use that word as a descriptor for someone who encapsulates the perfect mix of trendy-meets-edgy-meets-wearable, this Pretty Little Liars star is it.
She hit every trend like she was following a Cool Girl Checklist: Off-the-shoulder? Check. Dress over a tee? Check. Circle earrings? Halter cocktail dress? Pearl-encrusted looks? Check, check, check.

Have you ever found yourself suddenly enveloped in a nightmare? You must be dreaming, right? Either that, or you’re in an immersive Vr escape room, trying to save your own life while a friend fucks with you from the sidelines! That was the fun, panicked predicament I found myself in when I headed to The Microsoft Lounge to play The Belko Experiment – Vr Escape Room Experience created by my talented friend, David Yarovesky.
The game, co-created by Dan Clifton, is an interactive puzzle which puts you in the middle of The Belko Experiment. You have fifteen minutes to solve the clues in order to save your own life. It’s designed for the Htc Vive and Oculus Rift headsets through the Steam Platform, so you have a bit of a choice. Did I mention that it is Free? Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Leo McCarey's The Awful Truth (1937) is showing February 13 - March 15, 2017 in the United Kingdom in the series The Rom Com Variations.Leo McCarey’s 1937 screwball classic The Awful Truth is the epitome of a sub-genre dubbed by philosopher Stanley Cavell the “comedy of remarriage.” In the film, husband and wife Jerry and Lucy Warriner (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) succumb to their marital suspicions and embark on an easier-said-than-done divorce. He returns home from an unspecified dalliance, complete with fake Florida tan (ever the gentleman, he bronzes so as to save Lucy the embarrassment of getting asked why her husband looks pale after spending time in the sun), but upon his arrival, Lucy herself is nowhere to be found. She must be with her Aunt Patsy, Jerry assures his guests, that is until Aunt Patsy (Cecil Cunningham) shows up sans niece.

Sweet/Vicious is the perfect description for Jules.
As we meet her on Sweet/Vicious Season 1 Episode 1, she's a sorority sister, she doesn't drink and she doesn't swear. But the once good student was treated badly and discovered playing by the rules isn't as easy as it's cracked up to be.
She's a very sweet girl who felt she had to turn vicious in order to get some things done.
When we first encounter Jules, she's handing a young fellow his ass, quite handily, I might add.
Jules: Do I have consent, Will? I want you to think about Beth. The music you played to drown out her screaming. The fear in her eyes when you held her down, when you forced yourself into her.
Will: No, no, please no. Please, I'll do anything.

Young actors Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo didn’t have a lot of experience coming into Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” but that ended up working to their advantage.
The ’80s-set thriller is just the fourth role for Wolfhard and the second gig for Matarazzo. Kept from working in Hollywood too long, that means both of them remain untarnished — and better for it. Wolfhard and Matarazzo have the natural screen presence of children who are just being kids.
Wolfhard plays Mikey, the leader of the group searching for their missing friend. “He can be really precocious at times, really funny, and then really serious — solemnly serious about finding his best friend, Will,” Wolfhard said. “And I think that’s why I like him, because he can be so relatable to people who grew up in the ’80s. They can be like, ‘Hey, I was kind of like that,’ or ‘I had a friend like that.

A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as I open a dwarf sanctuary... "I will not be owned!" -Elliot Elliot spends most of "Kernel Panic" battling for control against Mr. Robot, even temporarily banishing him from his head for a while through massive doses of Adderall. Eventually, though, he runs out of pills — and the ability to function without sleep — and his dark alter ego returns, proving new best friend Ray's theory that "Control is about as real as a one-legged unicorn taking a leak at the end of a double rainbow." The episode as a whole represents Mr. Robot as a series that's at once both wildly out of control and under complete control. At slightly over an hour without commercials, it feels much too long for the amount of story it contains, and there are certain sequences (Angela's dinner with Price, for instance...

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made history Thursday morning. The pals were nominated in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy category for hosting “Saturday Night Live.”
That’s not unusual — “SNL” hosts are nominated for Emmys all the time. But here’s what’s unique: Poehler and Fey were nominated as a single, combined entity. Earlier this year, the TV Academy accepted their joint submission, and their names appeared together on nomination ballots.

That’s never happened in an acting category before because, well, a person is generally one person. But this was a unique circumstance: “SNL” guest hosts are eligible for guest star Emmys – but usually even comedy teams are nominated separately. (For example, Keegan-Michael Key is nominated this year for “Key & Peele” in the supporting comedy actor category, but Jordan Peele is not.

If the unwritten rule for sequels is “Do it again, only different,” then “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” fulfills its obligation, figuring out a way to retell its own story with just a bit of a twist. Thankfully, director Nicholas Stoller and stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron are all back for another go-round, so whatever might be lacking in inspiration is made up for by a steady stream of well-earned laughs. The press notes proudly mention that the original “Neighbors” was 2014’s highest-grossing original comedy, but even if no one packed the originality this time around, at least.

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

The Bahamas International Film Festival (Biff) has announced that Academy Award® winner and renowned global icon Sir Sidney Poitier has agreed to the naming of the prestigious Career Achievement Award at the Bahamas International Film Festival the “Sir Sidney Poitier Tribute Award.” Biff founder and executive director Leslie Vanderpool made the announcement.
“There is no person on Earth who is better suited to have the Career Achievement Award be named after him,” Vanderpool said. “Poitier is one of the finest actors for generations and is, simply put, an icon and a legend.” The American Film Institute named him among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time.
Poitier stretched his reach within the industry on film and on stage acting in productions such as "A Raisin in the Sun" (1959) and "Lysistrata." For his film role in "The Defiant Ones," Poitier was the first male actor of African descent to be nominated for a competitive Academy Award in 1958. A few years later in 1964, Poitier was the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in a riveting and memorable performance as Homer Smith in Ralph Nelson’s "Lilies of The Field."
Thirty-eight years after receiving the Best Actor award, Poitier received an honorary tribute from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of his remarkable accomplishments as an artist and as a human being. In 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
A global legend, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1968 and highly respected author, director and “actor’s actor,” with more than fifty films and television shows to his credit, Poitier has starred in some of Hollywood’s most important and biggest films and earned critics’ praise for several commanding performances. Poitier’s reputation solidified with leading roles in mainstream films: "No Way Out" (1950), "Blackboard Jungle" (1955), "The Bedford Incident" and "A Patch Of Blue" (1965). The most successful films that catapulted Poitier’s career in 1967 where, "To Sir with Love," "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner" and "In the Heat of the Night."
Directing was not far away from his achievements having a directorial debut with the western "Buck and the Preacher" soon followed by "Uptown Saturday Night," "Let’s Do It Again," "A Piece Of The Action," "Stir Crazy," "Hanky Panky," "Fast Forward’ and ‘Ghost Dad."
From 1995 to 2003, Poitier served as a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company. Proud to represent The Bahamas, Sir Sidney was the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan, a position held from 2002 to 2007, while being the Ambassador of The Bahamas to Unesco.
What makes this addition so momentous is that he is a Bahamian who believes in building future generations of filmmakers while honoring the actors and actresses who broke ground, furthermore, upholding their careers with poise. Sir Sidney possesses a true love and appreciation for the people of The Bahamas.
One of the Bahamas International Film Festival’s missions is to ensure youth in The Bahamas have the opportunity to remember Sir Sidney while celebrating the achievements of others within the film industry.
“Leslie Vanderpool’s efforts have been extraordinary in making it possible for The Bahamas to have not only a film festival, but to also attract some of the great film artists and filmmakers from around the world. People like Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Laurence Fishburne, Danny Glover, Alan Arkin, Sir Sean Connery, Sophie Okonedo, Lee Daniels, Lenny Kravitz and my own daughter Sydney Tamiia Poitier, who have found, to their great surprise, that the Bahamas is moving swiftly toward a bona fide motion picture community--all of which have been structured by the imaginative young Bahamians who have committed themselves to The Bahamas having a film community of its own,” Poitier said.
Adding to his many achievements, Poitier has published four best sellers "This Life," "The Measure of A Man," "Life Beyond Measure: Letters to my Great-Grand Daughter" and "Montaro Caine." Additionally, he has many talents having recorded an album with the composer Fred Katz called ‘Poitier Meets Plato’ reciting passages from Plato’s writings.
Family is most important for Sir Sidney, He and his wife Joanna Shimkus, a Canadian-born former actress of Lithuanian and Irish descent have two daughters Anika and Sydney Tamiia Poitier. Poitier has four daughters Beverly, Pamela, Sherri and Gina from a previous marriage. In addition to his six daughters, Poitier has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Leslie Vanderpool and Sydney T. Poitier will be instrumental in overseeing the granting of the Sir Sidney Poitier Tribute Awards.

His life story is now brilliantly set to film, as he is portrayed by Paul Dano and John Cusack through different life stages in “Love & Mercy.”
Written by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner, and directed by Bill Pohlad, “Love & Mercy” – derived from a Brian Wilson song title – is the story of two crucial phases in the songwriter’s life. The younger phase, portrayed by Paul Dano, checks in with Wilson as he puts together The Beach Boys’ masterpiece, “Pet Sounds.” At this point, the dissolution of Brian Wilson as Rock Star is beginning, and as a result the older phase of his life comes into view, with John Cusack turning in a career-defining performance as Wilson, under the care of psychologist Eugene...

Whenever Tokio Hotel gets ready to play a concert, they gather backstage, circle up, put their hands in the center and give a hearty Power Ranger "Activation!" If Tokio Hotel is to believed, this is the truth. We learned that fun nugget and more from our recent HitFix Mix interview, where the four-piece German pop-rock troupe revealed a little more about what makes them nervous and more of their... motivations. When you flash your boobs at Georg Listing and Tom Kaulitz, for instance, the bassist and guitarist will respectively be almost 100% sure you're flashing at them. Singer Bill Kaulitz revealed that the band is especially "lazy" in the studio, while Gustav Schäfer admitted that smoking is perhaps one of their most treasured time-killers. The band last released their album "Kings of Suburbia" and have been promoting singles "Love Who Loves You Back" and "Feel It All"; the music video for...

Das Gespenst (1982)
“I always have a simple story, but I tell it so fanatically and wildly and tenderly and cursingly and on fire and in need of being loved that you’ll find a slice of life in front of you.”
The first time I saw Herbert Achternbusch he was hypnotizing a chicken in Werner Herzog’s The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. Anybody who has seen the film might recall the chicken, but who is Herbert Achternbusch? It is a question that cannot be simply answered. Achternbusch captions his entire artistic output with a paradox: ‘You don't have a chance, but use it’. Trying to make sense of his work, this epigram sounds appropriate.
Matters are not helped by the unavailability of most of his films on DVD. In Germany, a boxset devoted to Achternbusch is now out of print, although two key works—Heilt Hitler (1986) and Das Gespenst (1982)—remain in circulation.

StreamFix has gotten your latest updates on new Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Crackle streams. Check out these titles before they inevitably go back into the endless interweb secret vault. Netflix "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (Season 9) I'd hate to burden you with a reminder about injustice during this Election Day, but it must be noted: It is insane that Kaitlin Olson has gone eight seasons without garnering an Emmy nomination for this show. Have you heard this woman dry-heave? It is sensational. "Total Recall" Did you know? Arnold Schwarzenegger > Colin Farrell, at least in terms of dystopian thriller heroism. I wouldn't want to see Arnold attempt Farrell's role in "Saving Mr. Banks" or anything like that though. "Altman" This documentary gives an incisive, insightful look at Robert Altman, whose best movie is not "Nashville" or "Gosford Park" or "Mash" or even "The Player." Nope. It is "McCabe and Mrs. Miller,...

As I mentioned in its introduction, my Steely Dan appreciation last week stemmed from an email exchange with several other people. And my article was not the last word by a long shot. One of the participants, Tony Alterman, is responding with his own album-by-album review, and his brother, CultureCatch's own Ian Alterman, is pitching in with his own observations. Here, with punctuation corrected and tangents omitted, is the origin of the debate and its continuation.
Tony Alterman:
Katy Lied -- Probably [Steely Dan's] fourth-best album, after Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and Royal Scam, in that order. Of course, fourth-best for Steely Dan is a bit like Beethoven's fourth-best symphony -- shades of difference here.
Ian:
Re: Steely Dan, it might be heresy, but I think Royal Scam is better than Aja. So my order would be Royal Scam, Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill, and then...well...it wouldn’t be Katy Lied.

So the other day a bunch of us were emailing back and forth about something and a tangent appeared in which we were ranking our favorite Steely Dan albums in order -- sticking to their '70s albums, their prime period.
Naturally I ended up writing a defense of my ranking. Doing so meant that I had to say unkind things about aspects of some tracks, which might seem like I'm denigrating them when, in fact, they all bring me pleasure. This is an exercise in relativity akin to the distasteful Howard Stern activity of pointing out the tiny flaws in some beautiful woman to explain why he, troglodyte that he is, finds her less than perfect. It is akin to pointing out Natalie Portman's mole. But if one is intent on ranking things, it must be done. And ultimately it all boils down to my highly personal tastes,...

Last night, at Pier 97 on the Hudson River, I saw Robyn play a set that I can only describe as a triumphantly unhurried victory lap. Though she shared the bill with Norwegian electro duo Röyksopp — with whom she just released a solid Ep, Do It Again — it was very clear who the audience was actually there to see. Moments before she came out, someone deep into the crowd raised one of those clawlike appendages that are supposed to help you take better selfies and waved around an iPhone set to a scrolling text program that screamed in an inelegant typeface, “Robin!!!!!!!!!”Robyn’s path to this sort of American adoration has been pretty interesting. She had her first Stateside hits in 1997 — “Do You Know What It Takes” and “Show Me Love,” both off her bubblegum-soul debut Robyn Is Here — right on the cusp of the teen-pop boom that would...

Scandinavian pop purveyors Robyn and Royksopp present a sci-fi mini-epic in the new video for "Monument," from their recent collaboration, the ethereal Ep "Do It Again." Populated with images of infinite outer space, infinitesimal inner space, floating orbs and the stoned, wondrous expressions of singer Robyn and the Royksopp boys, the video recalls the trippy, mind-expanding visual feasts of such films as Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life." Director Max Vitali (who's previously worked with Smashing Pumpkins and others) utilized a wire-based camera called a "spider-cam" to capture the clip's weightless feeling. The leisurely-paced 6-minute video echoes the song's large, expansive and meditative groove. It's hypnotic and relaxing without ever feeling like a pretentious drag. Watch it here: "Do It Again" is now available, and Roby and Royksopp's tour dates can be found here. ...

Robyn and Royksopp’s dance tune, “Do It Again,” the title track from their joint Ep, is a slightly cautionary ditty about the things that feel so good that we do them again, even if they aren’t great for us. The ambitious video, however, spins a much darker tale of addiction, forbidden love, rights suppression, and some other things that I still haven’t figured out… Those crazy Scandinavians! Shot in Mexico in black and white, the Martin de Thurah-directed video leaves a lot to the viewers’ imagination as seemingly unrelated tales play out of activists fighting against an unexplained evil, a girl with an injured leg dealing with addiction, and some stolen artwork. There’s a timelessness to the clip that seems like it could take place anywhere from the ‘50s to present day. So rather than try to interpret it, maybe it’s just best to...

Nothing says summer like Scandinavia, which is why Robyn and Röyksopp's Do It Again Ep's May release was perfectly timed. Today double-r released the sprawling, dynamic video for the title track. Shot around Mexico, it shows partying going so right and so wrong, all at the same time and all in black and white. Robyn herself isn't in the video much — she periodically flashes onscreen in a fury of dance moves. Still, we'll take it!

Every movie has to have its signature song and that certainly goes for the action-oriented males in film that are fortunate to have these finger-snapping tunes represent them on the big screen. The movie theme song indulges the audience and delivers a whole new kind of intrigue and feeling that we invest in the roguish ruffians on the big screen that some men would like to emulate and the ladies would love to cozy up to intimately.
There are music selections that do bring to mind the euphoria of the male action-packed characters we regard highly despite their moral compass. Maybe one can get excitable when hearing Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” tune for the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name? Perhaps any of the musical themes for the countless James Bond films tickle your fancy? (there are two included in this article incidentally). Your preference might be in...

A strong debut is proving elusive for Mariah Carey’s new album, “Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse.” As of Friday, it looked like “Chanteuse” will sell no more than 60,000 copies in its first week, making it the superstar’s lowest non-holiday studio album opening week in the Nielsen SoundScan era. The chart closes at midnight on Sunday. By comparison, here last studio album, 2009’s “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” sold 168,000 in its first week. If there’s any good news for Carey, it’s that, despite its lackluster sales, “Chanteuse” will likely debut at No. 3, the same rank as “Memoirs,” according to Billboard. Otherwise, Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories” and Brantley Gilbert’s “Just As I Am” sell enough copies to hold at No. 1 (85,000) and No. 2 (65,000). In addition to Carey—who if she surges could bow at No. 2— other debuts in the Top 10 are Austin Mahone’s Ep, “The Secret” at No.

Let's Not Do It Again! continues at Trailers from Hell, with writer-director Jesus Trevino introducing "The Thing" -- and not the John Carpenter version. That director Matthijs van Heijningen used John Carpenter’s 1982 remake of The Thing as the touchstone for his 2011 prequel rather than Howard Hawks’ 1951 original says as much about contemporary audiences as his own artistic bent; Carpenter’s garishly gonzo version is far more in keeping with current audience expectations than Hawks’ intensely suspenseful but comparatively discreet monster movie. Ironically, van Heijningen’s film disappointed at the box office because its approach was deemed too slavish to Carpenter’s version.

Let's Not Do It Again! kicks off this week at Trailers from Hell, with director Ti West introducing Gus Van Sant's 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho."The only way to watch Van Sant’s remake of Psycho with a fresh eye is to never have seen Hitchcock’s irreplaceable original. That’s because Van Sant’s film is virtually an identical cousin of that 1960 classic using many of the same camera set-ups, albeit this time in color. Whether seen as a provocative post-modern deconstruction or an egregious waste of 60 million dollars, Van Sant’s film is oddly suspense-free, even with Joseph Stefano’s darkly comic screenplay and Bernard Herrmann’s slashing violins still along for the ride. Now apparently having become a Heaven’s Gate-like candidate for rehabilitation, this was given another recent reappraisal courtesy of the Village Voice.
