Sigh....
divemabini11 October 2022
So much promise. Concept sounded intriguing. But....sigh....falls victim to common issues that plague Korean television shows.

First, it attempts to weave so many plot threads into each show that it becomes a frenetic mess. There are too many people, doing too many things, at too many times. And often, too fast. Or slow.

Second, the minor characters inserted for comic relief aren't funny. They're annoying and whiny at best, severely cringe-worthy at worst.

Last, there are too many vague and ambiguous flashbacks that deaden the flow of the story. In fact, the flow in and of itself is a big problem. The show was 10 episodes. It could have been six. Maybe even five. I get it, the flashbacks are supposed to add mystery. But they just don't work. There's no emotional investment in any of them, or with any of the main characters outside the lead two ladies (who do a yeoman's job carrying this slog of a plot).

Cults and Aliens
skitzoanderson14 October 2022
I want to say I loved this show, but I really hate when a show brings out very unsettling and angry emotions, when characters make idiotic decisions kind of like in a horror movie lol. This is only the second Korean show to make me want to rate it poorly and I normally Love K-Dramas I have seen over 20, It has a good story/plot, and the acting is superb, characters are believable, and the show isn't repetitive or too long. I was able to watch most of it without being sidetracked or bored and i only had to skip ahead once at a part that pissed me off but I rewatched the part I skipped it's like a Korean X-files movie without the FBI. Enjoy it.

Light, fun and dorky
albatoolalawishaikh20 October 2022
The story is an adventure with protagonist against her head and against aliens.

I loved the all the side characters, each group delivered different kind of comedy and events.

All the episodes are eventful and light nothing serious but still interesting.

I'll refer to hong ji-hyo as the main lead, and huh Bora as the second lead according to their appearance order.

The main lead was so good in her role, her acting felt natural and sincere which is a hard thing to deliver in a drama-comedy. I loved how she looked natural unlike female lead in Korean series where they usually act and dresses to look so pretty and cute even if it's not needed. I have seen her in night in paradise and she really stand out from most Korean actresses. She is beautiful and talented.

The second female lead was a bit over the top with her acting and hairstyle. She was suppose to be the boyish free girl, but she wore full makeup all the time withe perfect curled hair and childish outfits. Her facial expressions "even the silly ones" were camera-posing like expressions. Don't get me wrong she was fine but being in the same frame with the main characters made her acting looks tacky.

Finally, The dynamic between the leads was built on mi-school brief friendship. And the second lead is upset until now and blame the main lead for it, and that was funny and immature for grown woman. She felt the an possessed ex girl friend and it was silly. She remided me of thst one episode of friends whene ross meet a hight school friend"brad bitt" and he He makes fun about how they used to be obsessed with dinosaurs while Rosa is still geeky about it. But in this series she is still a 15 mentally. They definitely have chemistry but thats not everything.

Betrayed By Itself
friendandmachine12 October 2022
Unfortunately the writing completely falls apart at episode five and beyond. The story moves in the opposite direction you hope for.

This series betrays the audiences trust by fronting as a movie predominantly about aliens. It then goes even further by betraying its own sub context about mental health with it's terrible ending.

  • Acting is over the top
  • Characters feel like a caricature or a parody of real people
  • The series is twice as long as it needs to be
  • The dubbing is mediocre, but, passable

I can only imagine how cool this series could of been if it leaned into its science fiction direction harder, and, maybe drop the green helmet.

It Was Ok
heartlyss_30 September 2023
I'm usually not into shows about aliens or outer space (with a few rare exceptions), but I watched Glitch anyway in support of Jeon Yeobeen because I'm a fan of her. I saw some clips of the show online and it looked like it might actually be entertaining. Glitch has some really funny scenes as well as some relatable ones that tug at the heartstrings. I love a good urban fantasy series, thriller, or mystery. Glitch has those elements of sci-fi and suspense. That being said, I also lost interest at some points because some storylines seemed to drag on with no real substance while others felt rushed and unfinished. There were so many plot holes. I was left a bit confused on a few things after finishing the whole series. I don't think there will be another season, so there will never be any further explanation. All of the actors had great chemistry so I enjoyed that aspect of the show. There was potential with the church / cult storyline, and I typically like movies and shows about religion and the occult, but Glitch really fumbled it. This show had the potential to be a lot better, but I was left feeling like it was kind of pointless. There's only 10 episodes and each was so chaotic with too many things going on and side characters with their own agendas. Glitch fails to develop these characters and storylines enough. It all falls flat. Some of the characters also did some really dumb things which annoyed me because they're all supposed to be grown adults aged 30+ lol Overall, the show is highly unrealistic and frustrating at times, but it's mostly entertaining if you can get passed all that. I think if the ending had been better, I could say it was a good show. The ending especially was anticlimactic. It was bizarre and confusing in a frustratingly lackluster way not a cool thought provoking way. I found myself thinking things like, "That's it?" and "What was that even supposed to mean? What was the point?" . Glitch could be quite enjoyable if you don't take it seriously at all and you're not a critical viewer. If you're watching it for the aliens, you'll be disappointed. It's not nearly as much about aliens as you'd expect. Give it a chance if you like K dramas with a supernatural twist. This show isn't for everyone though.

Funny
margriet-7069113 April 2023
First time for me to watch Korean drama so I don't compare to other shows or series.

Like other reviews state: acting was a bit over the top yes, but for me that was what makes it funny. Korean language and tone of voice adds to that :) Characters are well-portrayed and the relation of 2 major characters. Especially back when they were kids, is very recognizable and unassuming. Not every act of a person needs a good reason; sometimes people just do things.

First episodes are intruiging but also a bit slow. At the end it goes from mystery to action, gaining a lot more speed. Loved the ending because of its concept and displayed human interaction (not because of originality). Definitely loved the characters and acting.

It's about friendship
dumsumdumfai21 October 2022
Epi 8 Ok not an 8. Finally Cap gets something to do. The daughter becomes alliance. I can see a vague ending coming.

Epi 4 I'm four episode in and will definitely finish. For sure the alien story is secondary to the friendship between the two leads. The club with the 3 dorks, mom and dad, coworkers are for comedic effect. I suspect it's to do with the cult religion.

However I'm a bit worried about NaNa or Im Jin-Ah. Nothing wrong with acting just she looks really frail and skinny. Borderline anorexic. Hope someone is helping her.

The back story probably holds some key information and the young kids actually are pretty good. The cop seems a tad under use. The infiltrated Kim dad looks interesting. Hopefully the end is not convoluted and mess.

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews3 November 2022
Korean Drama " Glitch " is a sci-fi drama with a lot of mystery.

The drama has a kilelr duo, with the two female leads oozing chemistry and having a nicely paced relationship that blooms from almost hatred to friendship.

The drama, also, has its moments. Especially the first episodes were pretty intriguing and entertaining.

However, things got even wierder towards the ending, with some predictable twists to boot. The plot almost got repeatetive and lost its initial charm.

On the other hand, the performances were all great by everyone in the cast, and, especially, the two main leads.

So, overall, three out of ten.

Glitch is definitely amazing
amaraschive11 October 2022
Awesome series! Binge watch all over and over again!

JEON YEOBEEN'S ACTING IS TOP-NOTCH! She gave me goosebumps with her amazing expressions at each episodes!

The whole cult scenes was scary but thanks to the comedy scenes, I was able to enjoy the the whole series!

I must say yeobeen and Nana chemistry was SUPERB! I want the friendship their characters had! I also love yeobeen and ryu kyungsoo chemistry even though they had little scenes together, they were still able to flow with each other, over all yeobeen/ hong jihyo brought laughter and tears to my face! Thank you! Jeon Yeobeen a World-class Actress so TRUE!

Just the right amount of tension and quirkiness
OnigiriSan13 January 2023
I stumbled on this show by chance (Netflix recommandations) and what a ride it was !

It's quirky but still really suspenseful. The characters are all great and memorable even though the lead characters is sometimes annoying. They act weird sometimes, but it's not unusual for K-Dramas I think (?)

The show drags itself a bit in the middle of the season, around the psychiatric hospital. But each episode is still well paced and keeps you hooked.

It's too bad Netflix subtitles aren't that great. Most of the text isn't translated or not fully.

I would love to see another season, maybe center around Oh Bora, on another unrelated mystery. It could be a really great mystery show. But I doubt Netflix is planning another season, even though they leave it on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Meh
jvkirby-5216616 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show had potential, but missed it.

  • They wanted the paint the main character as a normal person experiencing abnormal things, but she came across as boring and lack luster instead. My favorite character wasn't even the main character.

  • The story brushes over a lot of very important topics. Why Jihyo was abducted by aliens, why she sees aliens, was her bf actually abducted, what happened to her biological mom, etc.

  • This show would have been better if it spent time answering these questions and ultimately spending much more time answering the BIG question regarding the aliens.

Oh well better luck next time.

Needs a higher rating
TheodoraEh12 October 2022
I don't really get why this has such a low rating. As far as KDramas are concerned, it managed to avoid tons of clichés we usually see. And that was a welcome and unexpected surprise to me. The subject matter is aliens and cults so if that's not someone's cup of tea they probably won't enjoy the series but personally I'm into stuff like that and this was fun without getting too scary or super lost in detail. I won't compare it to US productions of the same subject matter but since there's none I've seen so far from South Korea I think it deserves a higher rating than the 6.2 it has right now. If anything so that we start getting more KDramas that are different than the usual.

This show really highlights..
elin9315 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show highlights the dangers of religions and cults. It shows us how easily manipulated many people are because they're desperate to believe in something (no matter how ridiculous it is), and desperate for a higher purpose. It also reminds us about how dangerous it can be when the power falls into the wrong hands... like the old man on the show. Heck, there was almost a Jonestown 2.0 (collective mass s*icide) because the power fell into his hands.

The show itself was good. I really liked to see Ji-hyo and Bo-ras friendship come back to life. Although, the ending of the show was a bit.. meh. I think they could have wrapped it up a bit nicer in a more interesting way.

Big Disappointment
anonymme15 March 2023
I'm a huge fan of Jeon Yeo-Been, so I really wanted to enjoy this show, but it was lacking in every single area.

The plot is laughably chaotic: one minute too slow, the next it's jumped around leaving the viewer completely confused as to what's supposed to be happening.

Even the acting left me stunned at how bad they were. I assume it was the director who asked them to be so completely over the top, but it just comes across as absolutely cringe worthy. JYB is just soooooooo much better than this, it would be absolutely heartbreaking if she started losing out on roles due to the failure of this show. Hopefully she learns to be more careful in choosing her roles.

In summary: terrible show, don't waste your time.

Tedium
newkrejados17 October 2022
First, the American product placement: Google, McDonalds', IQOS. Clearly not an authentic KDrama. And then, the guns. Really??? And the obligatory Netflix sex scene 20 minutes into the first episode. Sigh!

Still, the premise had promise. There was a bit of suspense. Was it just delusion? Did something really happen? And the cult angle.

All completely bungled. There were definitely storylines to explore. Why was Bora an outcast? How did Abigail fall into the cult? And what happened to her in the aftermath?

From the cult perspective, it cannot compare to Help Me. From the alien perspective... Ugh. From the mental health perspective... it didn't really address it. And the characters, even those who could have had depth were mostly 2-dimensional. Bora and Director Kim were the lone exceptions.

It could better have been titled tedium.

Refreshing and unusual
gommie16 October 2022
An intriguing, funny and refreshing story, I got easily invested in the plot and in our leads, extremely funny at times, so weird in the good sense, I couldn't guess what would happen next so I had a great time watching the whole thing and didn't want it to end so I keep delaying it.

Yeobeen and Nana did an amazing job in this drama especially Yeobeen in the last set of episodes, Nana played the cool and refreshing Bora so well and their relationship is the heart of the show. Wish we got more answers in the finale but I'm still satisfied.

More than anything I was invested in Jihyo's journey as a person who repressed her real self for years while trying to conform to where she lives then she is faced with the disappearance of her boyfriend and meet Bora again, the person who always believed her, seeing the start of their relationship was endearing, I must say the flashbacks were really effective and got me even more invested in their relationship.

The alien and cult plot was able to keep me hooked in the show, till the last minutes of the drama I didn't know what to believe, it was extremely fun story to follow even though I wish we got more answers, but I happy with it, Jihyo and Bora are characters tha are going to stay with me for a while, I truly love them.

The cinematography is really beautiful and cool, the lighting, the music (!!!) and can I say I loved the filter used in the flashback scenes? It's really well made.

Waiting for even more unusual dramas like this one and Inspector Koo.

Was this supposed to be clever?
bored_bingewatcher16 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's extremely obvious that the girl saw actual aliens and they'll show up based on how the whole thing is set up. That being said, they only appear at the end. This is a very baitishly promoted series where the actual sci-fi visuals are largely contained to the first and last episode. Most of the series is spent with a dumb cult plot, that is especially ruined by terrible side characters that ruin what should have been a story about former childhood friends working together.

Also, the actual reveal as to the alien's motives was absolutely terrible. So they abducted her, just for observing, and that's it? Great, so subvertive, story over! And yes, I caught the foreshadowing on the TVs.

It's not terrible, I enjoyed especially the one episode opening scene where she was in a simulation by the cult. I like that you get the realization that she's in a simulation, right before the scene itself starts to disintegrate. And given the color scheme after waking up is very yellow-ish all of a sudden, I was really hoping she'd still be in a simulation and that would be the big twist. But no, they go with the lame obvious reveal that she's not crazy.

Really Interesting
phillipjbrown31 October 2022
People seem to either love this show or find it disappointing. I loved it an see no reason for such a low score. I didn't find it slow or too long, and I loved the ending, or pehaps I should say several endings.

The chemistry between the two leading ladies is really good (they seem to be friends off screen too). Will watch this again.

The theme of aliens, mental health and the cult could have been explored somewhat deeper, as it raised a lot of interesting quetions. The effects were reasonable and I liked the plot twists.

The ai theme is really about love and helping each other through good times and bad, Even the cult was based on love, but a love that has become twisted and abused by others, not for money, but power.

Nutjobs

Not enough alien juice! Another Netflix slop with no soul, rhyme or rhythm. Actually, this is a good example for having an interesting big idea but don't have a clue what to do with it. The first 2 episodes were interesting with a good build up, however, everything that followed up was a let down. After garnering enough attention in the initial episodes, it just wanted to get to the finish line quickly regardless of how it does it. All Netflix is good for is adding scenes of characters smoking, that's the typical Netflix-tax for you. On the bright side, at least the leads brought a decent performance.

A masterpiece!
luxinfinity14 October 2022
The characters in this film are very convincing. There's no clear distinction between good and evil nor sanity and insanity. The two protagonists represent the girl next door and the drop out rebel. Love is the real protagonist of this series where mere humans are willing to go beyond themselves to rescue the ones they love. I started watching the first episode by chance and quickly got hooked. I got so immersed in the show that I completely lost track of time and space; the episodes just get better and better. As an over 50 woman I strongly recommend scifi lovers to absolutely watch this! Any of us can easily identify with both girls: one desperately trying to fit in and the other unable to swallow the hypocrisy of an organized life. They remind me of the Tao symbol of ying and yang: they complete each other.

Great K-drama
atleverton29 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Glitch is k-drama done correctly. There are no unnecessary scenes - the Story begins when it should, ends when it should, and its middle is where it should be. But there is of course product placement, but it feels natural to the characters involved. This is the first k-drama series that I have watched where there is actually a love making scene - but it's not titillating at all, it's more depressing and suits the characters perfectly. In most k-dramas the male and female leads are working towards establishing a relationship together - but in this one there really isn't a male lead, and the female lead begins the series in a relationship and spends the rest of the series trying to help her ex-boyfriend. Another thing that is strange and not something I ever noticed before is that a lot of the characters smoke - weather real cigarettes or e-cigarettes. I don't think smoking is a great thing, but it's a fact that people do smoke in real life, and I've never actually seen any characters in a k-drama smoke. I will talk about the plot because I think it's incredibly well done and even if you do decide to watch this, me telling you what happens is not going to be any surprise or revelation. Hong Ji-Hyo is a woman who seems, on the outside, to have everything she could ever ask for - she has a great job, a wealthy father who provides for her, and a boyfriend that seems to be making plans for their future together. But she is dealing with a great deal of trauma. She believes that this trauma is the result of her family breaking up when she was younger, and also the fact that she hallucinates aliens. Throughout the story, we see that she may or may not have been abducted by aliens. She meets an old friend or rather frenemy from her past, and they discover a link between the aliens and a gruesome cult. The cult is wonderfully portrayed because you see the motivations of the people who are in it and what kind of horrible things being in such an environment can encourage people to do. It also seems to be inspired by real life events where members of a cult were found in a mass suicide having hung themselves like in this series. The great part is that we never know if aliens actually exist, or if these are just hallucinations. I believe it's the first k-drama by Netflix - and you can tell. It doesn't lose the craziness of what makes k-drama wonderful, but it adds unexpected character development and proper pacing. So if you like k-dramas check this one out.

Glitch
Tweekums13 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This Korean series is centred on Hong Ji-hyo. One day her boyfriend suddenly vanishes and she starts seeing aliens! Needing help she contacts an online UFO group. It is led by Heo Bo-ra; a girl Ji-hyo was friends with as a child but had somehow forgotten. They find themselves involved in a drama involving aliens and a strange cult. The latter have some odd ideas about Ji-hyo that put her in danger.

I thought this series was a lot of fun. There is a good degree of humour without it getting in the way of the story and some impressively tense moments; mostly provided by the obsessive cult. The characters are good; especially Ji-hyo and Bo-ra who have an enjoyable chemistry. The story plays out nicely and includes some fun twists. The cast does a fine job; especially Jeon Yeo-been and Nana as our two leads. At only ten episodes in length the series doesn't outstay its welcome and wraps up most plotlines nicely. Overall a fun series that I'd recommend to fans of lighter K-dramas.

These comments are based on watching the series in Korean with English subtitles.

Simple and entertaining
philxr11 October 2022
I don't care about overanalysing anything i watch. I give it a 9 or a 10 if i like it or don't rate at all.

This series is entertaining and keeps u guessing till the end.

Nice to see UFO's popping up in other parts of the world besides (done to death) boring old hollywood.

Over the years S Korea seems to be getting better n better at telling stories. And it's refreshing to see their take on different subjects. The quality and effort put into their work is evident by how popular they are.

1. A well made series 2. Good actors, especially the leads 3. Good soundtrack 4. Didn't look over done.

It's a 10 for me.

An Unexpected Korean Sci-Fi Drama
hoshinomizu30 April 2023
I was kind of surprised to see a Korean Sci-Fi drama when I looked up a list, and I'm happy I watched it! It ended up being a cute story about friendship more than romance (which is why I'm assuming it got bad reviews). And I will admit, the dubbing was really bad acting, so watch it with subtitles if you can, because the real voices are well done, and kudos to the actors. I liked the mystery and drama, and it was all really well done. I"m trying to think of something bad about it, and other than the English dub, I don't really think there is one. Now I'm just trying to fill space, so here we go!

Top class Korean television!
GERG-227 October 2022
As is usual for Korean material we see in the West the production values of GLITCH are really high, its a joy to see such well-made television, much better in so many ways than British (I'm British) or US (which is often just a collection of production cliches that add up to nothing, aimed at a teenage audience). And again, as usual, the two female leads are brilliant, completely believable and again, a joy to watch. The plot/storyline is gripping, particularly over the first five episodes we genuinely did not see what might happen next (and we are longtime sf fans with for me over five decades of reading and films). It was easy to become completely immersed in the world of Jihyo and Bo Ra, fascinating characters with so much implied backstory, and really care about what happened to them.

OK, there are some weaknesses - Asian television always seems to have some problems with continuity and once you know you can't help noticing it, And like so many Asian serials it tends to lose a but of heat on the last lap - which brought it down from 10 to 9 star rating for me. (But then - how many Western series end completely satisfactorily - why can;t I think of one right now?) We watched this in two episode blocks over five evenings, and I have to say it was the best tv time of 2022 so far. NB - this is as much character driven as plot driven, which might not be what some 'sci-fi' viewers want.
