In Korea, the age of 19 marks the brink of adolescence – and in the same way, the Seoul Indie-Anifest seemed to be at a crossroads. Its programming this year looked both to the past and to the future. The special guest selection juxtaposed classic American animator Bill Plympton with a much younger contemporary, Jérémy Clapin; the film programming spilled over into more segments and now, web animation; and, in due turn, the festival turnout seemed greater in number than ever before.
Within the Korean selections of Independent Walk and First Flight, then, it is almost fitting to see the tension between past and future present in the awards. “Echo” (Kim Sangjoon), which follows a cannibalism case in the 1990s, took home the coveted “Star of Indie” Grand Prize this year. On the other hand, the speculative future of “How to get your man pregnant” (Noh Gyeong-mu) scooped the Prize for Independent Walk,...

Upwards of 175 actors, musicians, authors, comedians, reality stars, models, media personalities, academics, activists and more have signed the open letter spearheaded by Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton and published Tuesday via public advocacy organization and political action committee MoveOn Political Action.
LeVar Burton
The letter encourages signatories and readers to address challenges at the local level across U.S. school districts, while calling out book bans as “restrictive behavior” that is “antithetical to free speech and expression.” It also underscores the “chilling effect” these bans can have “on the broader creative field.”

In recognition of the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie this week, we thought we would take a look at the ten highest-grossing movies based on toys that have been made (so far at least). This list was constructed using domestic box office totals that have also been adjusted for inflation (according to data and synopses procured from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers). So, enough yapping, here are the ten highest-grossing films based on toys.
10. My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) Original Domestic Gross: $21,885,107
Adjusted Domestic Gross: $25,496,025
A dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6—Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity— embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship to save their home.
9. Mars Attacks! (1996) Original Domestic Gross: $37,771,017
Adjusted Domestic Gross: $78,056,645
Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable weapons and a cruel sense of humor.

Wu-Tang Clan, Mary J. Blige, Epmd, Tyrese, and Sean Paul will be the night’s stars. The event’s performance line-up somewhat covers the genre’s bases, intertwining pop, R&b, and dancehall. New York radio veteran...

Neil Young always knew Tonight’s the Night was intense. “If you’re gonna put a record on at 11:00 in the morning, don’t put on Tonight’s the Night,” he warned Cameron Crowe in 1975. “Put on the Doobie Brothers.”
Young’s point was evident without even hearing the music. Just look at the stark, spooky cover, which features him standing onstage in complete darkness, wearing a pinstripe jacket and raising his finger to the microphone, his mouth forming a ghoulish smile. His shoulder-length hair looks like it’s gone many days without a wash,...

Movie star John Wayne became the face of the Western genre for an era, which became a timeless image for cinema. However, not everyone was delighted with the hero image that Wayne presented on the silver screen. Actor Gene Autry had his own career working in Westerns, but he thought Wayne’s True Grit marked the end of the genre.

“Gone with the Wind” originally had a more fraught relationship with its portrayal of slavery.
The 1939 film has frequently been criticized for its depiction of slavery on a plantation, but Historian David Vincent Kimel reveals the script had a very different approach in several cut key scenes.
In an article for The Ankler, he detailed his explosive finds in his purchase of the 301-page shooting script which included two different schools of thought regarding how to approach history. “Rival groups of screenwriters on the script emerged: ‘Romantics’ and ‘Realists’ who amped up scenes of mistreatment to highlight the brutality of Scarlett’s character and even condemn the institution of slavery itself,” wrote Kimel.
He purchased the script in 2020 for $15,000 and estimates less than a dozen copies remain.

From the moment Kacey Musgraves released her first album, "Same Trailer Different Park," in 2013, fans knew the country songstress was a master of lyricism, especially when it comes to her love songs. Some of her most iconic tracks, like "Butterflies," were inspired by her real romances, so it's no surprise fans are deeply invested in Musgraves's love life.
Following her split from her ex-husband, Ruston Kelly, in July 2020, the "Rainbow" singer ventured into heartbreak with her 2021 album, "Star-Crossed," proving her breakup anthems could be just as emotionally stirring as her romantic tracks.
Musgraves has most recently been linked to writer Cole Schafer after they were spotted holding hands in NYC in June 2021. While the pair are generally private about the particulars of their relationship, they're very open about their love for each other, with Musgraves often posting about Schafer on social media.
It got us thinking about the previous men Musgraves has been linked to.

In the final moments of the performance, Shelton, Cabello and Gwen Stefani all hit their buttons and turned their chairs around, giving Kalvach a big surprise.
Things soon got contentious between the coaches, though, as they all vied to win the signer over to their teams.
It was soon revealed that Cabello, the new coach in town, actually blocked Stefani from turning her chair around.
“I did my homework. I know how the blocks work. Immediately, my mind went to, oh, Gwen is going to want her. So I blocked her,” Cabello said.

At Monday’s Primetime Emmys ceremony, Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”) became the first person to repeat in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category since Tony Hale (“Veep”) six years ago. Hale prevailed in 2013 and 2015, so his wins weren’t consecutive like Goldstein’s now are. Goldstein plays Roy Kent on the Apple TV Plus hit series and submitted the fifth episode from Season 2, titled “Rainbow,” to Emmy judges.
Goldstein took down fellow nominees Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”), Toheeb Jimoh (“Ted Lasso”), Nick Mohammed (“Ted Lasso”), Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”), Henry Winkler (“Barry”) and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”). Of those contenders, only Winkler and Shalhoub have won this category before, in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

"This is not a movie. It's a trip." Netflix Film has revealed the full=length official trailer for a Spanish re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz called simply just Rainbow. Somewhere over the… comes this new film from Spain about a teenager's coming-of-age journey. The synopsis doesn't exactly explain where she goes or what happens to her, but the trailer gives us a look at her experiences. The hyper-stylized film will heavily feature important aspects of contemporary culture such as dance, fashion, plastic arts and above all, music. The film's cast is led by Dora Postigo, Áyax Pedrosa, Wekaforé Jibril (Spirit Disco), Carmen Maura, Carmen Machi, and Luis Bermejo. This definitely does look trippy, but it also seems cheesy, with the Wizard of Oz elements turned into a hipster aesthetic that kind of seems cringe (to me). It might be fun, as there's some crazy ideas in this tease and...

Kesha is unleashing her inner Playboy bunny as she shows off her impressive figure in a bikini covered in the famous brand’s logo.
Enjoying a poolside moment ahead of the weekend, the singer updated her Instagram with summery shots as she chilled out, posting for her 3.2 million followers and going a little off-beat.
The 35-year-old performer lay back on a wooden poolside deck in her opening photo, posing with her arms to her head and funky shades on her face.
Showing off her trim waist and toned legs, the blonde went for a logo-embossed pair of Playboy bikini bottoms in black, ones she paired with a slightly crumpled and khaki green shirt with a yellow logo on it.
In a swipe right, Kesha posed raising a leg slightly while poolside, offering up a completely different angle, but keeping the carefree vibe.

Paco León, one of Spain’s most prominent talents, is attached to star in thriller “Líbranos del mal” (“There Is Evil”), directed and produced by brothers José and César Esteban Alenda at their Madrid-based outfit Solita Films.
Currently in development, “There Is Evil” is planned to shoot for six weeks in Madrid from January 2024.
Solita Films is one of the five Spanish companies selected by Spain’s trade promotion board Icex and its Icaa film institute to pitch their production slates at Cannes’ Producers Network, on Friday 20.
In “There Is Evil,” after another girl is found dead, a former police officer decides to hunt down a child serial killer with the help of his six-year-old daughter.
“We want to make an impulsive, hypnotic thriller, but with the emotional texture of a family drama where the anguish and fear are born from perfectly real, recognizable and close circumstances,” José and César Esteban Alenda said.
