Missing Some Key Components
wallswj-3696726 July 2022
This episode was missing three things:

1. The villain wearing a hockey mask.

2. The episode should have begun with the crew sitting around a campfire telling their favorite scary stories.

3. The villain should have been armed with a chain saw.

If you haven't seen this episode yet, be advised to skip it; it is beyond awful. It must have been intended as a practical joke on the viewer.

The setting of Sea Patrol is not compatible with stupid horror plots.

Warning: Spoilers
Red Sky Morning is quite possibly the single worst episode in the entire series of Sea Patrol. The entire episode forces the crew to act in ways that make no sense in order for the episode to stumble through the mess of the plot. The "ghost ship" idea had potential, but that potential was immediately squandered by turning it into a clichéd axe murderer plot.

The problems with this episode are so numerous that it would truly be difficult to know where to start a critique. From the XO's blatant disregard for Hammersley signaling the shore crew to return, to the unconvincing attempt at introducing a romance with a one-off disposable character, to the complete incompetence and stupidity of the Navy crew, and several gaping plot holes big enough to drive a road train through.

The episode comes across as producers and writers really wanting to do a "horror movie" plot, despite the fact that such a plot is completely out of character for the Sea Patrol setting. In pursuit of this silly plot idea, the writers threw all logic, as well as the competence and intelligence of the Navy crew, completely out of the window. Very poor writing and production on an episode with a plot that never should have been considered.

I love Sea Patrol but this is one of the worst episodes from the standpoint of relaity

Warning: Spoilers
This is where X fouls up big time. She knows they have a psychopathic threat on board, She finds Bailey dead. Why didn't she pick up his pistol and ammo when she discovered him??? I fairly certain the Navy has them carry a spare 15 round mag for their pistols. She fired fired 5 rounds at Nathan Talbot then panicked. With Bailey's pistol and his thirty extra rounds she would have had 50-60 rounds of ammo...and a second pistol. She fires five as he chopped through the door (exposing him to a high volume of fire) then panicked, He has to come through that fatal funnel of a single door...and she had 25-50 rounds of 9mm ammo. Why run? She could have chopped this clown into hamburger. But she ran. Not an example of good training and coolness under threat.

From a military standpoint, she flunked. She's a weak reed.

So, she ends up saving the day with highly improbable bit of martial arts.

The writers had to save her from coming across as the emotional fool.

So, a exciting episode. But one that shows and extreme lack of CQB training and an XO that can't take advantage of a CLEAR advantage.

I love Sea Patrol, but the writers let XO down on this big time.

A non-canonical Halloween Special, but in December?
rbutterworth-812294 June 2023
Some TV programs (especially "The Simpsons") sometimes present non-canonical Halloween specials.

This episode was just like a standard teen splatter movie, where instead of everyone staying together, the next victim would wonder off on their own, and surprise!

And as usual, people with guns use them, except when there is actually someone to shoot at.

And of course you can guess what happens after the evil monster is finally killed.

This episode certainly felt like one of them, but I see that it was released in December, not October.

I can't imagine what they were thinking when they wrote this.
