The story was fine.. message was good too. But the writing was so average. This type of films deserves a better execution.

A must watch.

I loved the performance of Girl's father played by Rajan Modi.

Nivedita is superb. KK in a cameo is excellent.

Unexpectedly good

Rating 7/10

I watched Shaadisthan by chance, on Disney Hotstar in orig. Hindi w/Eng. Subs. Wasn't expecting very much but the film held my interest and turned out to be quite a good watch, with some catchy music except for the opening band number.

A conservative Rajasthani family in Mumbai (Nivedita Bhattacharya : wife; husband: Rajan Modi; daughter Arshi : actor unknown) have missed their flight to Ajmer where they are going for Arshi's cousin's wedding. Because Arshi who is to get engaged against her will to her cousin's to be brother in law at the same function, ran away though she returns home after the flight time. Arshi refuses to eat or talk.

The cousin Cheelu(unknown actor) in Ajmer requests his band friend Imad (unknown actor) in Mumbai to perform at his functions and as the group will drive down in their van, to also pick up his relatives. Arshi's parents are shocked to see the van which looks punkish. They enter with trepidation and are not happy with the way the band members dress, look and talk, even though the band group is perfectly polite to the family. Arshi is completely silent and expressionless. Sasha (Kirti Kulhari) the lead singer gets to know that Arshi is desperately unhappy as she is only 17, turning 18 the next day and being forced into marriage by her parents. The band group stop by in Udaipur at their old friend Tiger's (KayKay Menon) haveli where Tiger persuades Bhabhi and Arshi to have some tea with the rest of the group. The tea however is laced with some 'feel happy' intoxicant and the two end up dancing to the fabulous live music ... and later find themselves fast asleep at a highway dhaba. There is no food at the dhaba but the owner allows Sasha and Bhabhi to cook with his supplies. As they cook together, Sasha asks Bhabhi all sorts of questions about her life and it then gets a bit too preachy as Sasha urges her to live for herself and break free from the way she has been conditioned to be, always doing what society percieves to be correct. Imad sees Arshi sitting alone and morose and tries to cheer her up. She opens up to him about her fears and her problems, saying she is thinking of committing suicide rather than get married to someone she doesnt want to.

As the clock strikes midnight he gives her a friendly hug to wish her a happy birthday. The father who had to pick up something at Udaipur arrives just then and imagining the worst, he hits Imad. The others pull him away and the journey continues to Ajmer.

No further Spoilers as its a new release.

The music is fabulous throughout the film except for the opening rock band pieces. The acting is good except Kirti Kulhari comes across as overly preachy in her conversations with Arshi's mother. Rajan Modi as the father, Arshi herself and the male band members were very convincing. The actors names for several key characters are not easy to find surprisingly and Im not going back to watch the credits again!

Arshi's character reminded me of a Rajasthani girl in my college decades ago, who was in love with someone her parents would never approve of, and also slated to be "married off" to a man of her parents choice. That girl also spoke of committing suicide. I was not in touch and I dont know what eventually transpired but sometimes I do remember and this film brought those memories back. The film's depiction of such families is not wrong, hopefully in this modern age educated girls are able to speak up for themselves and their choices in life, but for many conservative society fearing families much will remain the same .....

Shaadisthan holds the interest and is quite a good watch.

Shaadisthan, On DisneyPlus Hotstar, Is A Sterile Classroom Camouflaged As A Film
shefali-5924414 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The "social-message drama" is a smug and inherently Indian cousin of the social-commentary drama. The latter is an actual storytelling genre. But the former is erroneously considered one. Instead of diagnosing a culture and trusting the audience to identify the ailment, the film-makers insist on delivering the verdict, the prescription as well as the medicine themselves. The whole film then exists in service of its message - which is conveyed in bold and blindingly bright letters, in the self-righteous tone of a teacher, a parent, a sage and an orator at once. Some might say this is noble, but I personally think it reeks of intellectual arrogance. A movie's job is to engage, not to turn entertainment into a multimedia classroom. Shaadisthan, directed by Raj Singh Chaudhary, is an example of why education should best be left to moral science textbooks.

Parents should watch this!
manirsoffl13 June 2021
A clear view of how parents giving burdens to their child for their society sickness. Especially for girls. A simple 93mins of narrow story but yet leaves some messages to the typical indian parents who never asked what their child always wanted to be. Though the emotional scenes are not so well connected but still clearly explained what the crews intended to. So just give it a chance. Somehow all the pre adults can connect it with their life. And thats the pros of this film. If you had a chance, watch it with your parents.

Propaganda Movie
love-abhi271511 July 2021
Another hunduphobic propaganda where muslims are super liberal and hindus are conservative and super intolerants. Story of the movie shows a hindu family parents trying to marry their minor daughter eho is below 18 yrs. If anyone simply google then it will show out of 10 cases 9 belongs to muslims where they marry below 18 yrs girl and Indian law also supporting them for this, but movie makers shows exactly opposite.

Why on earth was this made ?
kinshuk-gaur14 June 2021
Nothing much to write about this movie. Good! That people are getting opportunity to make movies thanks to the OTT platform. But such mindless movies are ruining the content.

To showcase a message under the garb of alcohol, sex and drugs take away the purpose and this in no way is women empowerment. A left liberal propaganda just to legitimize all of the mentioned things and in the end they say the movie carries a social communication is quite misleading.

Acting is below average barring Nivedita and her husband serves the saving part.

I don't understand why KK Menon agreed for his nonexistent performance in this one.

The Director/Story writer has done proper justice to the problem persisting very subtle manner.

Lifeless Film
rish200619 June 2021
The film is random, lifeless, no humour, no entertaining moments - just nothing. And, the social message, they tried to show is nothing new - same old 'log kya kehenge' stuff.

Movie send the wrong message
mishravijayk17 June 2021
Movie shows if you are into Drugs ,smoking Weeds and living like a hippie then you are considered liberated .

If you are HouseWife you are oppressed.

Real Empowerment comes from responsibility and sacrifice .

The lead protagonist Kirti Kulhari is living with her Friends and love to live life with her own terms and always angry with Society rituals .

It would have been nice if there would have been background story about her why she is like that .

Overall this movie failed to make any impact on Audience and If you nothing else to watch you can watch .

lots of bad examples as message
yamahapic25 June 2021
Poor movie, modern time generation trying to fight some old bad things by using modern bad examples like sex alcohol and drugs... will the director and main female artist solve same issues same way if it was about their mother and father?

Poor writing
ashishcristiano26 June 2021
If a movie/series has kirti kulhari, it is bound to have a very poor storyline, and it is also the case with shadistaan. Poor writing, stereotyping the older generation, and praising a so called 'rebel' culture where turning 18 years old is synonymous with drinking and smoking weed, picking fight with everyone for no reason, just sich a waste of time.
