After ignoring the advice of locals, Joel and Ellie descend deeper into dangerous territory in search of the Fireflies - and Tommy.

After burying Henry and Sam, Joel and Ellie head for three months to Wyoming to look for Tommy. They meet an old couple that advises them to not cross the "River of Death". However, they do and stumble upon an armed group of men riding horses. Joel explains that he is looking for his brother Tommy and wants to cross their land peacefully. They bring Joel and Ellie to their fortress where he finds Tommy, who married Maria. Now this group lives in the commune Jackson, organized by the survivors, with duties and obligations. They welcome Joel and Ellie to stay with them, but Joel believes the immunity of Ellie may save the human race. Joel tries to convince Tommy, who is younger and stronger than he, to go to the University of Colorado, where the Fireflies have a base and may study Ellie, but Tommy says that Maria is pregnant and he will be a father.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Joel and Ellie meet an old First Nations couple. Although guns are pointed the good natured couple give directions and warn them not to cross the river. They continue on past the river.

Soon they meet Joel's brother Tommy, his partner Maria and the 300 person commune. Ellie passes a sniffer dog test for infection. They have a secure village with all necessities. Joel explains to Tommy his fears. He has tremors. He tells his brother Ellie is immune. He asks Tommy to take Ellie to the Fireflies in Colorado. Ellie gets new clean clothes and Maria trims her hair. She watches a movie with the townsfolk. Later Ellie reads Joel's daughter's diary, she had overheard him talking to Tommy. Joel says they will split in the morning! Ellie is upset.

Joel can't sleep and thinks about Sarah. In the morning Ellie is packed and ready, Tommy comes to get her. Joel saddles a horse, he offers Ellie a choice, she chooses Joel. Tommy says follow the Interstate and gives Joel a rifle. They do some rifle practice on the way. Joel explains life before. In five days they approach the City. The University area is deserted. They see monkeys rambling about and go towards the biomedical lab. Searching for humans all they find are monkeys. They hear voices and see a few raiders coming. A map on a bulletin board highlights Salt Lake City.

A raider attacks, Ellie can't get a clear shot, Joel kills him but is stabbed in the guts. The two manage to escape on the horse. Joel passes out and falls off the horse. Ellie pleads for him to get up.
