- Teddy (James Purefoy) heads back to Kujama, Nigeria, the scene of his philanthropic epiphany.
- Teddy () travels back to Nigeria and meets with a young man, Desmond. He tells him the story of his encounter with rebel leader Jonathan Bankole, who previously attacked Teddy in the pilot episode and whom Desmond declares to be a traitor. However, Teddy encourages him to listen to the story and consider that there might have been more to the man.
Several days previously, Teddy and Philip () attend a corporate meeting proposing a new oil refinery in Nigeria, stating that it will bring profits to the economically-depressed country. Olivia () asks Teddy about Doctor Chima Balo (), and he assures her that they are "just good friends." He goes to Nigeria with A.J. () and Dax (), and they narrowly avoid gunfire as the rebel forces fight the army. Teddy is told that he must ask Bankole's permission to build his refinery, and when he seeks a meeting with the man, he is sent to see Balo. The two friends share a warm reunion, and he notes that she is pregnant. She tells him that the child's father died in the hurricane. When he explains about his plans for the refinery, she states that Bankole is a good man, but a "severe" one, and says that she will go alone to set up Teddy's meeting for him. Several hours later, however, she has not returned, and Teddy worries about her safety. He soon receives the news that she is being held hostage by Bankole. Soon, rebel soldiers come and collect Teddy as well, and Dax follows them.
Back in the U.S., Philip receives news of Teddy's current activities, and is once again impressed by his selfless determination to do good. He tells Olivia how he wants to be more spontaneous with his own charity. The next day, he talks with a bartender friend, James, who explains that his son is having trouble and needs a tutor that he cannot afford, and Philip jumps on the opportunity, offering to pay for the education. When he meets with the son, Duane, the boy is uninterested, so Philip then offers him a financial incentive to study.
Teddy is brought to Bankole, who demands a hundred million dollars from the government to rebuild his village. He states that there is "no justice" for Kujama any other way, and that the government has ignored their problems so far. Teddy insists that the oil refinery will bring money to the country and offers to trade places with Balo, but Bankole refuses, telling Teddy he must go negotiate for the money or risk the doctor's life. When he meets with the army commander to pass on Bankole's demands, the man states that they will not compromise with the rebels and will not give him the money. Frustrated, Teddy gets drunk with a friend and wonders if there is a way he can blackmail the government into paying up. Then, inspired by a TV commercial, he is struck by a new idea and tells A.J. to find him a camcorder. He goes back to Bankole and tells him he will record his message explaining what has happened to the village and why he needs money to improve it and will broadcast it all over the world, shaming the government into helping. Teddy shows the finished tape to the army commander and threatens to upload it to the internet, and he finally agrees on fifty million, although he will only pay it in installments if Bankole "behaves."
Elsewhere, Philip's friend James has lost his job, and asks Philip to front him the money to care for his son. Olivia is doubtful about the deal, and Philip grows frustrated, having counted on her support in his attempts to be charitable. Later, Duane calls Olivia from the hospital and asks if Philip will come to see him, but only once his father has left. When Philip arrives, he sees that Duane has been beaten, and James explains that he was mugged. Philip offers to foot the hospital bill, but James snaps that his money is "poison" and quickly loses his temper, leading Philip and Olivia to conclude that he may have beaten his son in anger.
Teddy brings some of the money to Bankole and explains the alternate deal about receiving the money in parts. He grudgingly accepts, and then asks Teddy about his son, saying that he too had a child whom he last saw when the boy was nine. He explains that he has had to make great sacrifices for his cause, and then shakes Teddy's hand and releases Dr. Balo, who is unhurt. Teddy notices a moment pass between Balo and Bankole, however, and once they are in private, he confronts her, and she admits the truth: Bankole is actually her lover and the father of her child, and she tricked Teddy into thinking she was in danger in order to get the money for the village. When Teddy demands why she felt the need to deceive him, she explains that she did not trust him "enough." Upset, Teddy returns to the U.S. and muses that "being generous can be selfish" under certain circumstances. He refuses Balo's calls, until one night he learns that Bankole has been murdered by his own men, who betrayed him and took the money. He returns to Nigeria to attend Bankole's funeral, and rekindles his friendship with Balo. He tells Desmond that he cannot blame Bankole for taking extreme measures to care for his people, and it is revealed that Desmond is the man's son, whom he abandoned many years previously. The boy is still resentful, but Teddy tells him that he was thinking of the big picture and trying to take care of his entire Nigerian family.
Duane comes to visit Philip and tells him that he is living with an aunt while his father gets help for his problems, and proudly shows Philip his high SAT scores. Philip and Teddy meet for a drink, and they discuss their early days when they started their business together. Philip confesses that he has felt abandoned by Teddy lately and doesn't feel that his friend "has his back." Teddy acknowledges his own unusual behavior and promises that he will never hurt Philip or his family under any circumstances. The two toast to their future.
