Nathan Explosion is heading back to where the journey of Dethklok began. Following the arrival of the direct-to-video follow-up film Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar last year, Adult Swim is set to broadcast the feature-length final adventure of the legendary metal band on April 5. Immediately after, on April 6, the adult animated film will be available to stream exclusively on Max, where the entire four-season run of the beloved original series can be found. The announcement came with a new promo that promised death and destruction coming to the world unless Dethklok could save the day.

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.

And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

Adult Swim’s cult classic death metal parody series Metalocalypse has brought their latest venture in the form of the animated movie Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, which concludes the lush beauty of the gory, satanic spectacle, the bone-tickling humor, and profanity-filled self-awareness of the series with one last death smash and headbanger. Centered around the fictional death metal band Dethklok, the series pokes fun at the exalted mannerisms and myths generally associated with the heavy metal genre and celebrates its tropes and impact. It is unknown whether Kiminori Wakasugi’s manga series based on a similar subject matter, Detroit Metal City, inspired the creation of the series, but what we know for sure is that the original albums, expansive in-universe lore, and live tours in the real world have imbued a uniqueness to Metalocalypse, something that is far from waning even after a decade since the original series’ cancellation.
