Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, Westerns have delivered audiences some of the most powerful performances and best-written stories of cinema, from John Wayne in The Searchers to Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. In 1993, Tombstone shook up the genre by bringing a star-studded, action-heavy story to the West, quickly winning over a new generation of viewers to the Western and revitalizing the film industry's interest in it.
Since the success of Tombstone, the Western genre has proven to be incredibly versatile, and studios have been more open to experimenting with the Old West than ever before. Films like Horizon: An American Saga, 3:10 To Yuma, and True Grit represent some of the most ambitious, best-written, and entertaining Westerns of all time. However, in the age of blockbuster superhero cinema, it's never been easier for great Westerns to go overlooked by mainstream audiences -- and these films prove it.

Exclusive: Terence Winter, the writer-producer known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and more, will team with Vincent Piazza, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Phiphen to develop Midge, a tragicomic feature based on an absurd but true, as-yet-untold story.
At the center of it is Thomas Midgley, Jr., the man who in the first half of the 20th century invented two of the most toxic and disastrous chemicals humankind has ever known — leaded gasoline and Freon —without having even been a chemist.
In a statement on the project, Winter told Deadline that “the only thing crazier than this story is that it hasn’t already been told.”
He’s teaming with Piazza to pen the script and both will exec produce, along with automotive journalist Jamie Lincoln Kitman, who also serves as a research consultant on the project. Phiphen’s founder Molly Conners will produce alongside Academy Award nominee Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club). Director meetings are underway.
Winter is best known for creating the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, as well as for producing and scripting dozens of episodes of The Sopranos, for which he earned three Emmy Awards. In his 25-plus years in television, he’s also won three PGA awards and four from the WGA. Also the creator of HBO’s Vinyl, he’s otherwise best known for scripting Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. More recently, he co-wrote Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, which is out in theaters now.
Piazza is best known for his work on the acting front, having appeared in everything from Boardwalk Empire and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys to the Sylvester Stallone starrer Tulsa King and IFC thriller Centigrade.
Most recently, Appian Way produced the DiCaprio starrer Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Scorsese, which is up this year for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Phiphen’s recent projects include the comedic thriller Coup! starring Peter Sarsgaard, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and will be released by Greenwich Entertainment, and the Nicolas Cage Western Butcher’s Crossing.
Winter is repped by CAA, Lbi Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Piazza by Gersh, Untitled Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Many stories have been told about Westward expansion, but few have focused on the impact and consequences. John Williams’ 1960 novel “Butcher’s Crossing” follows William Andrews, a Harvard student who leaves his life behind to join a buffalo-hunting expedition, facing many harsh realities on his journey.
Producer Molly Conners sat down with Variety for the film’s release (now available to buy and rent on Blu-Ray and DVD) to discuss director Gabe Polsky’s journey adapting the story, financing the film, casting its star Nicolas Cage and working with the Blackfeet Nation to tell the story about the destruction of the buffalo population in 19th century America.
There’s a surge of interest in the Western genre thanks to shows like “Yellowstone” and “1883,” was it always going to be a feature film?

Kansas, 1874. In a letter to his father, Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) details his decision to leave Harvard and travel west, searching for a purpose while exploring the country. His idealistic desire to experience a hunt leads Andrews to join experienced buffalo hunter Miller (Nicolas Cage), who promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Little do they realise that the unfolding journey will risk their lives and their sanity.
Amidst announcements about this adaptation of John Edward Williams’ 1960 novel, the most attention regarding this film occurred during an actor roundtable, where Cage mentioned a horse named Rain Man that he believed wanted to kill him. Such a fun story feels different from co-writer/director Gabe Polsky’s feature about man’s all-consuming nature and the destructive aftermath left behind.

Gladiator 2 brings a brand new gladiator, Lucius, who steps aside from his role as heir to follow in Maximus' footsteps. Paul Mescal is a perfect fit for the role. The sequel features a star-studded cast including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn, ensuring phenomenal performances. With modern CGI and improved filming quality, Gladiator 2 will refresh battle scenes and deliver epic fights that surpass the original, setting the bar even higher.
Gladiator 2 is finally in the works, and there is much to look forward to. The Flash was… well, it was something, but the majority of fan discourse has been caught up in the various CG cameos found in the finale, which included Nicolas Cage as Superman.
As Nicolas Cage was once slated to star as Superman in a movie directed by Tim Burton, the cameo served as a glimpse of what could have been. But the actor told Yahoo Entertainment that most of his appearance in The Flash wasn’t at all what he had shot on set. “When I went to the picture, it was me fighting a giant spider. Cage leads a strong cast into the wilderness in an adaptation of John Williams’ punishing novel that cannot quite convey the full horror of its events
John Williams’s punishing 1960 western novel Butcher’s Crossing was described by Bret Easton Ellis as “a precursor to what Cormac McCarthy would do with the genre”. It follows Will Andrews, a dreamy 23-year-old Harvard dropout, as he tags along with Miller, a buffalo hunter targeting hidden valleys in the Colorado territory in the late 19th century. Will hopes to learn “more about this country”; what he gets, as the four-man crew shoots and hacks its way through dwindling herds in ever more treacherous conditions, is a lesson in remorseless brutality. Any screen version would need to find a cinematic equivalent for the prose’s tensile strength, and for what critic Leo Robson calls the “regime of methodical close description” from which Williams offers no respite.

Butcher's Crossing is a solid film with below average script, but the character dynamics and cinematography make it engaging. The film's cinematography, particularly the portrayal of the American West, is one of its most captivating aspects. While Butcher's Crossing may not be mind-blowing, it offers realistic tension and highlights the chemistry between Nicolas Cage and Fred Hechinger.
Butcher’s Crossing isn’t necessarily a straightforward Western but when it departs from that genre good things happen. Director Gabe Polsky (In Search Of Greatness), who wrote the script in partnership with Liam Satre-Meloy, brings John Williams' (Stoner) book to life with aspects of both a thriller and adventure film. At no point does the script ever rise to anything above average. That being said, the cinematography by David Gallego (War Pony) portrays the American West in a way that makes the wide shots gorgeous. It’s been a bit more than a year since “Butcher’s Crossing” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, but the timing of its theatrical release could hardly be more propitious. Director Gabe Polsky’s grimly fatalistic Western has finally arrived at the megaplexes just days after the PBS airing of “The American Buffalo,” Ken Burns’ fascinating (and often infuriating) documentary about how bison were very nearly hunted into extinction in this country before an unlikely group of preservations saved the shaggy beasts. As Burns emphasizes in his two-part film, and Polsky’s drama duly notes during its end credits, an estimated 60 million bison roamed the American West as late as 1860. Two decades later, however, the bison population plunged to less than 300.

A naive Harvard dropout gets a life lesson in brutality on a dangerous quest to hunt buffalo in the 1870s. Butcher's Crossing, adapted from the classic Western novel by John Edward Williams, is a parable of greed, arrogance, and humanity's unquenchable thirst for blood. Stunning landscapes are stained by the slaughter of the majestic animals' skinned carcasses. The price of their thick hides are worth any risk to the foolhardy willing to follow them. Good performances overcome a somewhat rote narrative with uneven pacing. A solid second act emphasizes character development and lifts the film from several stumbling blocks.

Butcher’s Crossing was reviewed at TIFF 2022.
Plot: A young man (Fred Hechinger) forsakes his wealth and privilege to explore the American west. He’s talked into bankrolling a Buffalo hunting expedition by Miller (Nicolas Cage), who’s become obsessed with his all-consuming trade. Soon, the two are on an endless expedition threatening their lives and sanity.
Review: As a lifelong Nicolas Cage fan, it’s tremendously rewarding to see him again respected as perhaps the most iconoclastic actor of our era. While I’d argue there are bigger stars out there, there are few on-screen personalities to match Cage, and while he was stuck in an endless loop of Dtv movies for too long, he’s since re-emerged and regained his reputation as a master of his craft. It helps that even in his worst movies, Cage never phoned it in, which is perhaps why he’s been able to...

To celebrate Indigenous People's Day, Collider is excited to share an exclusive clip from the tense Western thriller Butcher's Crossing featuring Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage and The White Lotus star Fred Hechinger. Based on John Edward Williams's novel, the film tells the harrowing tale of a young Harvard drop-out who seeks a greater purpose as part of a buffalo hunting team led by Cage's Miller. He and Hechinger hash out the details of what promises to be the hunt of a lifetime in the clip, unaware of how their lives and sanity will be at risk during their expedition. The mythical herd of buffalo they hunt was only made possible by the Blackfeet Tribe who graciously loaned their herd to the production.

Before The Old Way was released in January 2023, Nicolas Cage had worked on another similar almost-Western movie, Butcher’s Crossing. Although the film premiered at the 2022 TIFF, it hasn’t seen the light of theaters... until now. The upcoming Western drama film is based on the novel of the same name written by John Edward Williams in 1960. Butcher’s Crossing comes from writer-producer-director, Gabe Polsky, known primarily for documentary films, in his feature film debut, which he co-writes with Liam Satre-Meloy. The film’s story, taken after the original novel, follows a Harvard dropout, Will, who forgoes his Ivy League education and moves to a small town in Kansas called Butcher’s Crossing. There he explores the wilderness and joins a group of buffalo hunters, which not only puts his life at risk but also threatens his sanity. From what we know, the film echoes elements of Into the Wild and Terror woven into Western lore.

Updated with latest additions: SAG-AFTRA, which launched a strike against Hollywood studios on July 14, launched its interim agreements program that allows independent productions with no direct ties to members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to continue filming.
The guild has been adding to the list of projects granting agreements since soon after it went on strike against the AMPTP after failing to agree on a new film and TV contract. Under the terms, members “may work on these productions without being in violation of the strike order,” per the guild.
On July 27, SAG-AFTRA began granting casting-specific agreements that allow its members to “audition and/or engage in negotiations regarding casting for these productions, but may not yet travel, rehearse, or otherwise begin rendering services for the production.”
Other agreements give films clearance to promote at festivals. Notable films in that category include Michael Mann’s Ferrari,...

While TIFF 2023 is in the books, a selection from TIFF’s 2022 edition is finally coming out over a year after its debut. Butcher’s Crossing, starring Nicolas Cage as a buffalo hunter in the old west, played to good reviews (including my own), with many noting that it was much artier fare for Cage, being an adaptation of the classic novel by John Edward Williams. Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Noah Le Gros, Kerry Knuppe, Shiloh Fernandez, Nick Searcy, Abraham Benrubi, Clint Howard | Written by Carl W. Lucas | Directed by Brett Donowho
Incredible as it may seem, this is Nicolas Cage’s first western, although he clearly enjoyed shooting it, because he’s already done another one (Butcher’s Crossing). Essentially a knock-off version of True Grit, The Old Way isn’t especially overwhelming in terms of plot and direction, but it’s eminently watchable all the same, thanks to strong onscreen chemistry between Cage and young co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The film begins with a prologue sequence, in which grizzled gun-for-hire Colton Briggs shoots and kills almost everyone during an attempted hanging, including the man he was supposed to be rescuing in the first place. Twenty years later, Briggs (now sadly sans moustache) has hung up his guns in favour of raising his young...

While much of the focus is on Nicolas Cage in Renfield, the premiere of The Old Way marks a franchise first for the prolific actor. Cage has been acting for over four decades and has appeared in everything from superhero movies like Ghost Rider to playing a hypertrophied version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, but portraying ruthless gunslinger Colton Briggs offers Cage a challenging opportunity.
Cage has experienced a renaissance in his career of late, but there are still genres that he hasn't ventured into for his own personal reasons. It may seem that Cage, with a hefty filmography firmly in direct-to-streaming releases, isn't selective with his roles, but the actor makes very conscious choices when it comes to the movies he stars in. Even as movies like Renfield continue his 2020s trend of making a comeback, there still has to be something about a genre that draws him to it.

In "Renfield," Nicolas Cage becomes the latest in a long line of actors to play Dracula. The actor previously played a creature of the night in "Vampire's Kiss," but this time, he's playing the lord of all ghouls. However, Cage's Dracula will merely be a supporting player; the star of the movie is his eponymous servant (Nicholas Hoult). After so many years at the Count's side, Renfield is reconsidering if he still wants the job. When your boss is a blood-sucking demon, the severance package probably isn't one you want.
"Reinfeld" looks like it will lean more on the latter side of "horror comedy," so if nothing else, Cage's expressive acting is a good fit. He's already said that he looked toward the utterly bonkers horror film "Malignant" for inspiration, so there's no telling how far he's going to take the character. With so many previous Draculas to draw on,...

Nicolas Cage's acting career spans 41 years and over 100 movies. That's more than enough time to make just about every type of film, and Cage has been plenty adventurous in his choices. He's done dramas, comedy, action, horror, suspense, war flicks, and several unquantifiable brain scramblers. He's played Ghost Rider. He's played the screenwriter of the film in which he's starring (and the screenwriter's fictional brother). He's played himself.
But somehow, after all this time, Cage hadn't appeared in a Western until recently -– and the itch must've hit him something fierce, because he's now made two of them! One is "Butcher's Crossing," an environmentally conscious tragedy lamenting the ruin of America's westward expansion. The other, which opens in theaters today, is "The Old Way," and it is precisely the kind of Western its title indicates. Cage stars as Colton Briggs, a reformed gunman whose peaceful domestic existence is shattered...

Nicolas Cage has tackled a wide variety of genres over the course of his career, but he only recently dipped his toe into the world of Westerns. One of his first will be The Old Way, and Lionsgate has released a pair of clips for your viewing pleasure, which you can check out below.
The first clip finds Nicolas Cage’s character waking his daughter after hearing gunshots in the distance, while the second finds the pair holding several injured men at gunpoint.
Directed by Brett Donowho (Acts of Violence) from a screenplay by Carl W. Lucas (The Wave), The Old Way stars Nicholas Cage as Colton Briggs, “a cold-blooded gunslinger turned respectable family man. When an outlaw and his gang put Colton and his family in peril, Colton is forced to take up arms with an unlikely partner — his 12-year-old daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) — in this action-filled film that...

Nicolas Cage scholars might quibble with the promotional claim that Brett Donowho’s “The Old Way” is the actor’s “first traditional Western” — a choice of words that’s careful not to step on the spurs of neo-genre fare like “Butcher’s Crossing” and “Prisoners of the Ghostland” — but
The first part of the problem is that Donowho’s competent but uncompelling oater doesn’t have enough fresh meat on its bones to fill out its Western cosplay. While Morgan Smith’s jaunty score does its best to summon memories of “My Darling Clementine,” and Carl W. Lucas’ threadbare script channels the same one-way modernity that “Shane” once rode towards an uncertain sunset, “The Old Way” clearly lacks the ambition to shoot for any identity of its own.
Even worse is that it gestures towards one anyway, as this low-budget genre exercise allows its characters just enough ammunition for us to...

The first look at Nicolas Cage in Dream Scenario has arrived. The Oscar-winning actor known for his various wacky performances has experienced somewhat of a career resurgence recently thanks to his stellar performance in Michael Sarnoski's film, Pig, as a reclusive truffle-hunter whose prized foraging pig is stolen from him. Cage followed that up by playing a fictionalized version of himself in the meta-comedy, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and also has an anticipated turn as Dracula on the way in the upcoming Renfield movie. However, this is just one of many intriguing roles Cage has lined up for the near future.
Cage will also star in the A24 comedy titled Dream Scenario, which started filming in October 2022. Now, the first look at Cage's new comedy has surfaced online, shared by director Kristoffer Borgli on Instagram. A total of three Dream Scenario images reveal the film's clapperboard in action and Cage in costume,...
