Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil’s film and TV production company, Mortal Media, has led an investment round for animation studio Swaybox Studios, Variety has learned exclusively.
As part of the investment, Mortal Media will join Swaybox’s advisory board, while Griffin and Kalil have also put an untitled live-action/animation hybrid project into development with the studio.
Swaybox was co-founded by Theresa Andersson and Arthur Mintz in 2013 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The company has developed a new animation technology and process for film and television production, called “Momo Animation.” The technology involves a combination of three traditional animation forms: CGI animation, practical elements of stop motion, and live action real-time performance.
“We’ve been so impressed with Arthur and Theresa’s vision and long-term aspirations for the company, “ said Kalil. “Swaybox’s technology is really remarkable, but it’s the artistry of their animators, puppeteers, and craftspeople that makes Swaybox animation feel like magic.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.
Reigning Best Comedy Series winner “Ted Lasso” is seeking a third consecutive victory, but five of its seven 2022 rivals can put a stop to its streak. Those previously nominated shows that also aired during the eligibility period of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023 are “Abbott Elementary,” “Barry,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and 2018 champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The two contenders from last year missing from this ballot because they did not return in time...

The intersection of late-stage capitalism and late-stage Peak TV has made prophets of people normally fixated on profits.
It would be borderline madness if, on a weekly basis, the Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon and Apple were to send shareholders an email with the subject line: “The End Is Nigh.” But the television industry, which has normally explored issues of class with the same skittishness it reserves for religion, has started to treat the economic realities of our American experiment with far more pessimism than you would expect.
The irony is plain: These content producers/unlikely doomsday preachers are putting out a steady stream of shows about the corrosive impact of a system that treats workers as interchangeable cogs existing only to fatten the bottom line; at the same time, they’re raising subscription prices on loyal customers and killing off completed productions that employed hundreds for tax write-offs.

Leave it to your mom to pull you back to earth when your dreams are too big.
Whether that's a good thing or not is purely circumstantial.
On Hello Tomorrow!, Jack Billings is selling people land on the moon. It sure seems like he might need mom to do her thing.
If you've been watching Hello Tomorrow!, you know how tough it is to understand the sales pitch.
Jack and his team of salespeople are selling a way out for those living mundane lives, but as we've seen with Myrtle, there comes a time when you have to deliver on that promise.
Jack's big on promises and low on follow-through, and it's not only his customers or his team he's letting down.
Jack's been driven by his desire to reconnect with his son, and although it's rough going at first, soon, Joey seems like a chip off the old block.

“Hello Tomorrow!,” a new 10 episode, half-hour dramedy that follows a group of salesman hawking lunar timeshares in a retro-future world, officially launched on AppleTV+ on Friday, and for lauded actor Billy Crudup, the series hit close to home. TheWrap spoke with co-creators Lucas Jansen and Amit Bhalla and stars Crudup and Nicholas Podany to learn more about the show’s characters and themes, and how the series tackles the “disastrous ramifications” of radical optimism.
Crudup plays Jack Billings, a salesman of great talent and ambition, whose unshakeable faith in a brighter tomorrow inspires his coworkers and revitalizes his desperate customers – but threatens to leave him dangerously lost in the very dream that sustains him.
“We were told we were going to meet Billy to play the role and we were like, ‘Oh my God, this guy’s goddamn perfect. We gotta sell him, what do we even say, how do...

When Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen were pitching the idea that would eventually become “Hello Tomorrow!” the showrunner pair had plenty of ideas of how to build out the world of Vistaville, the setting for their Apple TV+ series.
They knew they wanted Vistaville to have a sports team. For a town dripping with odd mid-century nostalgia, where better to turn to for a foundation than baseball? But, like everything else in this world of hovercraft Cadillacs and kitchens filled with androids, it needed to have its own bizarre edge specific to the world that Jack Billings (Billy Crudup) and his coworkers move through.
“We wrote the pilot and there’s a ballgame in the background. And we knew it shouldn’t be baseball. So we made jetball, just in the background. When they had us write an Episode 2, we said, ‘You know what was cool? Jetball.’ It’s an organic process.

For most of his career, Billy Crudup has kept his personal life behind closed doors. But “Hello Tomorrow!” — the new Apple TV+ series set in a retro-futuristic world — hits close to home for the actor.
Crudup stars as Jack Billings, who leads a duplicitous operation selling timeshares on the moon. The actor said his character reminds him of his late father, Thomas Henry Crudup III, who died in 2005.
At the series’ New York premiere on Wednesday night, Crudup spoke to Variety about how his father informed his performance.
“I guess [co-creators] Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen touched on something that I found unique about my father and this country,” Crudup told Variety at the Whitby Hotel. “It was a wonderful way for me to remember my father and conjure him through — not just playing him — but telling the story of him to people.”

Though they merely play salesmen in Apple TV+‘s new comedy, Hello Tomorrow!, Billy Crudup and Nicholas Podany clearly learned a thing or two about hawking timeshares on… the moon.
“Tell me something, Matt — how’s that office there treating you?” asked Podany during a recent Zoom call with TVLine. “Is it big enough? You got enough light coming in? Well, up on the moon there’s nothing but acres for you to do whatever you like up there. You like seeing the stars? Boom, baby!”

Hello Tomorrow!, premiering February 17 on Apple TV+, may be set in what looks like 1950s America, but this is very much a retro-future world, one created by Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen and in which people sell real estate on the moon. “It’s meant to let people see what America’s going to look like in the future and what it has looked like in the past and what it is like in the present. It is America as we’ve seen America in a lot of different iterations, all of which are driving for the same thing: sell, sell, sell,” says one of the show’s stars Billy Crudup, who plays salesman Jack Billings. Crudup sat down with Haneefah Wood (Shirley Stedman), Dewshane Williams (Herb Porter), and Alison Pill (Myrtle Mayburn) to talk about the new series with TV Insider’s Kate Hahn during the Winter 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour.

“You want the moon? Just say the word, and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down,” is one of the most romantic declarations in movie history. James Stewart‘s George Bailey from “It’s A Wonderful Life” is far from the first figure to promise the impossible. Still, the swoon-worthy scene from that film highlights how the moon has long represented hopes, dreams, and reaching the unobtainable.

Attention must be paid. Apple TV+ is the home of swell comic series, like Ted Lasso, sure, but it's also become home for smart stories told in the future, like Hello Tomorrow!, which is on my mind since I just reviewed it. Looking beyond this week, creator Scott Z. Burns has turned his keen eye to dramatizing another important issue confronting mankind: climate control. Frankly, it sounds ridiculous to try and dramatize climate control, but his new show, Extrapolations, looks to be making a compelling case for paying attention and doing something about it. Based on Burns' past sterling work, I'm expecting a provocative series. Here's the official verbiage: "Extrapolations is a bracing limited series that introduces a near future...

The cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming drama series “Extrapolations” puts the star in star-studded, the sort of ensemble only a streamer’s deep pockets could shell out for.
The eight-episode omnibus series hails from writer, director, and executive producer Scott Z. Burns of “Contagion” and “The Report” fame. Apple TV+ released the first trailer today, and the series features the likes of, here we go: Yara Shahidi, Kit Harington, Daveed Diggs, Matthew Rhys, Heather Graham, Sienna Miller, Tahar Rahim, Meryl Streep, David Schwimmer, Neska Rose, Judd Hirsch, Cherry Jones, Edward Norton, Michael Gandolfini, Indira Varma, Diane Lane, Adarsh Gourav, Gaz Choudhry, Keri Russell, Gemma Chan, Marion Cotillard, Forest Whitaker, Hari Nef, Eiza González, Tobey Maguire, Ben Harper, Murray Bartlett, and MaameYaa Boafo.
Per the official synopsis, “Extrapolations” is a bracing limited series that introduces a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have become embedded into our everyday lives.

Last year, Apple TV+ had a zeitgeist hit with “Severance,” a show that leveraged a high-polish gleam and an eerily out-of-time aesthetic to tell a story of people who were ultimately strangers to themselves. The streamer could be said to be attempting the same feat twice with “Hello Tomorrow!,” set in a 1950s idea of the future and centering an affably empty salesman played by Billy Crudup. Here, though, the ideas are unrewarding enough that the worked-over look of the show grows tiresome, as though it’s covering for a lack in the series’ writing.
Created by Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen, “Hello Tomorrow!” features Crudup in something like the mode for which he won an Emmy as “The Morning Show’s” devious executive. Here, he plays Jack, a wheel-spinning operator who is selling timeshares on the moon. His customers are people who, as in our collective memory of our nation’s midcentury past,...

"Congratulations on your new home in the stars!" Apple has released an official trailer for a sci-fi comedy series titled Hello Tomorrow!, arriving for streaming February on their Apple TV+ platform. This has a peculiar concept that involves classic sci-fi concepts like floating cars, rocket packs, and robo helpers even though it's all set in the past. "What if the life you’ve always dreamed of was just one great deal away?" In a retro-futuristic world, charismatic salesman Jack Billings leads a team of fellow sales associates determined to revitalize their customers' lives by hawking timeshares on the moon. Billy Crudup stars as Jack Billings, along with Haneefah Wood, Alison Pill, Nicholas Podany, Matthew Maher, Dewshane Williams, and Hank Azaria. It's pretty obvious from this trailer what's going on, it looks like one big setup to just get rid of people by firing them into space. I wonder if they figure it all out,...

Hailing from Apple Studios and adapted from Napolitano’s bestselling, acclaimed novel of the same name, “Dear Edward” is a heartbreaking, life-affirming and uplifting story about survival, resilience, connection and the examination of what makes us human.
“Dear Edward” tells the story of Edward Adler (played by O’Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and a diverse ensemble of others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances and communities are formed. The series reunites Katims and Britton following their Emmy-winning collaboration on “Friday Night Lights,” who stars alongside Schilling, O’Brien, Amy Forsyth, Eva Ariel Binder, Brittany S. Hall, Idris Debrand, Carter Hudson, Maxwell Jenkins, Jenna Qureshi, Audrey Corsa, Anna Uzele, Ivan Shaw and Dario Ladani Sanchez.

Emmy-winning writer-producer Jason Katims said casting Connie Britton in his latest project for Apple TV+ came to him on “instinct,” with “Dear Edward” marking a reunion between him and the star of “Friday Night Lights,” on which he wrote and executive produced.
“I always wanted to work together again,” Katims, who developed “Dear Edward” for television, said at the 2023 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour for Apple TV+. “But I wanted to wait until I felt like I had a role to bring to her that was going to be something that I just had this instinct that she would connect with this woman.”
