What you get when you have a weekend with friends and someone says you couldn't make a movie if they gave you the money and all your friends could star in it.

A good story--poorly made
I enjoyed the story of a woman who decides to work as a deputy sheriff after the murder and robbery of her father and husband. She encounters many difficulties along the way, but sticks to her principles.

Absolutely poorly made but made me think i was in 1800 Texas

Do any of the 1 star reviewers think unschooled texans in the1800s had a college vocabulary. Enjoyed what might have been and enjoyed how it was shot with such a small budget.

Sorry excuse for a movie - dont waste your time!
yosemitelor14 July 2021
I rented it because it had a rating of 8.6 and sounded interesting. I did not originally see that rating was based on only 6 reviews. This movie stinks all the way fromthe contrived plot thru the horrible job of what was supposed to be a performance by most of the actors. Ive seen much better performances in small town high school plays. My only guess is that the positive reviews were submitted by loving but less than honest parents.

Horrible movie. Couldn't stomach more than 10 minutes.
jerryandfrankie19 January 2022
I only rated this a 1 because there was nothing lower...like a negative 10. For the life of me, I can't imagine how this movie got made, much less released. The "acting" is laughable. The old west costumes are shiny and clean. The outdoor scenery was completely unbelievable with obvious truck and trailer tire tracks in the dirt. Don't waste your time with this schlock unless you're looking for an example of how NOT to make a movie. Just sad.

Awful Movie
bertbarb-1385626 December 2021
This may be the worst movie I've seen in my lifetime. The script is horrible and the acting is a close second. The marshall, while having a heart attack, fires his whole load of bullets at a cuffed prisoner 6 feet away, and doesn't hit him. The deputy goes to find firewood and leaves her gun on a blanket within 6 feet of the prisoner. Guess what happens.

I question the review process here - can't trust it.

A LADY WITH A BADGE AND A SIX-GUN
zardoz-1322 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Writer, producer, editor & director Brett William Mauser has worn many hats in his career as a filmmaker. IMDB has attributed directorial credit to him on as many as 50 feature-length films and short subjects. "Lady Lawman" is his second sagebrusher, and this 19th century oater is worth watching, especially if you enjoy good westerns and bad westerns. "Lady Lawman" lands somewhere between the good and the bad but it is never ugly. Mauser's ear for catchy dialogue and tense dramatic situations makes him a better scenarist than his directorial helming. Earlier, he directed a western biography about African American lawman "Bass Reeves" (2010), with James A. House filling the boots of the eponymous character. No, I haven't seen "Bass Reeves," so I cannot comment on its' artistry. Meantime, "Lady Lawman" (**1/2 OUT OF ****) depicts the exploits of a real-life Texas Deputy Sheriff, Francis Miller (Ryan Lakey Jasso of "Day of Day of Reckoning"), and how she acquired her tin star. This leisurely, 94-minute outdoor adventure follows Miller as she vows to avenge the murder of his father and her husband. The primary villain is an obnoxious, flamboyant African American, Richard Andrews (Carlos Leos of "Deadly Promises"), who has no qualms about shooting anybody. He turns out to be the dastard who gunned down Miller's husband and father. Miller knows this for a certainty. Andrews plays Beethoven's "Fur Elise," the melody on the watch. She recognizes the song because it has a hiccup in it. Our heroine explains tht her husband had such a watch, had damaged it, and the tune plays but with a hiccup. She knows Andrews murdered her husband and her father. She violates her own moral convictions when she shoots Andrews dead. Miller is no damsel-in-distress, but she is on a learning curve. Earlier, she had reproved the sheriff for denying an assailant protection under the law. This is no dumb oater. The beauty of Mauser's storyteller is he pits himself against not only white men but also his own people. Interestingly, Andrews was a plantation owner himself and possessed slaves. So he isn't a one-dimensional rogue. Consequently, we don't have to worry about racism. Andrews cuts such a charismatic figure that his henchmen are willing to blow themselves to smithereens to help him. This is something that I have never seen in a western but wouldn't find it out of place in a terrorist war movie. In fact, you will see the loyalty two of his gunmen when they strap dynamite to themselves and behave like suicidal individuals. As a producer and a writer, Mauser is clearly above-average, but he doesn't fare as well when it comes to orchestrating his films and using his camera to create suspense and tension. He has been making movies since 2002. Now, I want to see some of them. The settings are arid but atmospheric. The hats are shabby, but the wardrobe looks seasoned. Some of the performances are subpar, but "Lady Lawman" isn't a bad western, and Ryan Lakey Jasso gives a good account of herself as the titular lawman.

Horrible acting.... Horrible
cujorocky11 January 2022
I told my wife. It was like watching a bad high school play. Not one decent actor. The mother should be banned from the business. Embarrassing acting and very bad dialogue. This kind of acting is inexcusable. How can actors get in movies who can't act? Wow, this is BAD!!!!

He worst in my lifetime
psceirons19 January 2022
2 actors qppeared to know what they were doing. The heroine and the villain. The others were not well trained and significantly distracted from any effort to follow the contrived story. I agree with another reviewer that the Mother was seemingly comfortable and I don't blame her; I blame whoever casted her. I can honestly said it was a very very poor movie and I am being kind.

If you like history, you'll like this.

This is not a Hollywood, big budget extravaganza but it is a true story. For all its flaws in production I still enjoyed it. Ryan Jasso is excellent in this and certainly credible as FM Miller. The important thing for me is that the story was told. I will watch this again.

Prime fodder for MST3K

So bad it's good. Wooden actors speaking poorly written dialogue in nice clean clothes. The budget for this film was $10,000 which is easy to believe.

"We're law. We do our job, we bring law and dispose of the lawless."
classicsoncall12 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I arrive here as the voice of reason among a virtually unanimous slate of negative reviews. Not that I think the movie was a cinematic masterpiece, but there were some genuine nuggets in the story line that I'll be happy to comment on. For example, when Francis Miller (Ryan Lakey Jasso) stated "I want to be a lawman", note that she didn't say I want to be a law lady, or a law person, or a law she/her. Granted, those terms would have been entirely anachronistic, so keeping with historical perspective was entirely appropriate. I also credit the filmmakers with acknowledging a black man as a slave owner, which I'm sure a lot of viewers would dispute, but one need only do a quick internet search on the subject to be educated. Which leads me to comment on a number of reviewers who felt the story of a lady lawman was contrived. Once again, Francis Miller was a real person elevated to the position of Deputy U. S. Marshal in Paris, Texas in 1891. Very little of her life before and after becoming a 'lawman' is known, other than she was an expert shot and a superb horsewoman, with a reputation of being fearless to the point of recklessness. Her marital status is doubtful, even if the story here had her avenging the murder of a husband and father. I can't really dispute the simplistic production values of the picture and the stale acting, but I kind of put those elements in the background as I watched and listened to the dialog, particularly an interesting conversation between Miller and Deputy Marshal Ernesto Martinez regarding God and the law. So all in all, there's some good stuff to take away from the story if you look past some of the obvious flaws. I even liked the fact that Miller's horse Cherokee was portrayed by a tawny mare who's real name was Peanut Butter!

Dont waste your time watching this lousy western, if you could call it that. Glad I didn't spend any money going to the movie theater to watch this. It will put you to sleep. Special effects are a joke.

I also am not sure which is worse the script or the acting. Most are just reading their lines. And yes, how it got the rating it got is beyond me. It's that bad.

Awful acting...
cdray-1412420 January 2022
I by no means hold any profession in the world of theater, but I know lousy acting and script when I see it. I got 20 minutes in (and that's because I was reading the reviews during the show to see if people felt the same as me) I finally just turned it off. I've watched better acting from high schoolers. Don't waste your time. I was hoping for a good western. Guess I'll stick solely with 1883.

Very poor.
decksbcp30 January 2022
The person in charge of costumes should be removed from this business forever. First few minutes, one shot of the Lady Lawman, she had her pistol, next shot no pistol.

To many vehicle tire tracks on the trails.

They should have hired a farrier, horse's hoofs look like they haven't been trimmed in several months.

Most of the reviews giving it a 1 were too generous. Terrible acting, terrible script. Will never get that time back. Although the costumes were nice and clean, so it has that going for it.

garcinder-2213914 June 2022
It's a movie, and it's a western, and supposedly based on true events. Watchable, some humor, it's passable, but I didn't find the dialog all that engaging.

Save your time - AVOID this movie!
adowns-110 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so horrible I wish I could give it zero stars. From the woman telling her mom that she should go become a marshal "...for the future of other women..." to her telling the marshal that there must be an alternate to violence like talking with the criminal robbers, the only thing that could make this any worse would be if they would refer to a current political figure as an intelligent being. This is an insult to every good western ever made, and there are enough historical inaccuracies that any 12-year-old would be embarrassed for the producers of this flotsam.

Only a brain-dead moron that lives for virtue-signaling garbage would like this move.

Good story
Scubadad-211 January 2022
Enjoyed the movie. Story was good. The only thing that bugged me was the audio they used. Didn't seem right. A few bloopers, taking off on long rides without so much as a bedroll, new saddle, and white crew neck t shirts.

Pitiful acting
blueschmoo-13-3471916 July 2022
Watching grass grow is more entertaining than the actors in this movie, there was no personality, just reading the lines with no emotion, glad it was included with Prime and I didn't pay extra for it, almost turned it off it was so bad.

Turned off after 15 minutes
sparrish222 May 2022
I gave it a try. But there were tracks from a tractor in the background in the first 5 minutes. The old drunk guy had a fresh white t-shirt, no dirt. Pistols have no recoil and unlimited ammo. The acting was really just awful. A high school class could have done better. Maybe it got better but I could not stand it. Turned off after 15 minutes.
