Love through the test of time
soeprijo1928 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Love story that expands between 10-15 years spand are a trend nowadays. South Korea, Taiwan and Japan made movies about that from a few years ago and now it's mainland China turn.

Love Will Tear Us Apart started from our protagonist's high school years. How they fell in love and made silly things along the way. The story then jumped every few years, with its obstacle along the way paved around their love story.

For those who familiar with South Korean or Japanese POV story telling, this movie would feel a little bit flat. The pace sometimes too quick for us as viewers to understand the inner struggle of protagonist. Everything just went like that without any emphasis. It didn't really fit the story that they really fought for their love.

However, this movie actually could have 8 or even 9 ratings if not for poor character development. How could a person that already worked as a contractor for almost 10 years still being cheated to? And who in their right mind would hit the blizzard on the mountain in the middle of nowhere? My sympathy for the protagonist did drastically reduced because of this. The screen writer should have made a more reasonable protagonist.

Average 7/10.

Love Will Tear Us Apart
BandSAboutMovies3 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a child, Wakaba (Sayu Kubota) had to deal with a bully of a father and even more negative treatment in school. Perhaps that why she always protected Koki, a boy who was treated the worst of everyone by the bullies. That stopped, however, when two of the boys were found dead and Koki killed himself some years later.

Years later, Wakaba is all grown up and on the way to a vacation to the woods with some girls and a musician that she has always been a fan of, Kohei Shirasaki. Yet like a trip to a slasher camp, everyone that interacts with her is murdered by a killing machine with a mechanical mask. In fact, only she and one other person survive the attacks. As Kamiyama, a police officer who was also the father of a girl who was killed, investigates, people close to Wakaba continue to get murdered in horrific ways. Has Koki never gone away?

Until now, I had only seen short films from Kenichi Ugana like Vierailijat and Extraneous Matter Complete Edition. This is even stranger than those films, if that's even possible, because it's somehow a sweet romance, a hilarious bit of comedy and a slasher, sometimes all at the very same time. It also feels odder and way more transgressive than the feeble stabs at strange that people rave over in Western elevated horror. This is no navel gazing but instead somewhat inspired levels of sustained weirdness.

Love Will Tear Us Apart

I'm a sucker for this type of Chinese romance film. Love Will Tear Us Apart is extremely well executed with award winning acting from the two leads. While there are so many similar movies every year, this one is a little different as it never allows audience's sympathy to steer away from the couple, it is very well focused and the feeling is so authentic. A genuine, powerful romance story.
