- The time machine, with Rita in it, travels back to 1917. She looks out the porthole and sees figures drift by, and remembers her past and how little of her life she's actually chosen. Rita weeps at all her regrets, and the great harms that she had endured. Her memories are shed with the tears, and by the time she lands in 1917, she's a blank slate.
Iowa 1917
The machine arrives in a field, and Rita emerges A nearby farmwoman, Betty Ann Bucklestone, greets Rita. Soon, the Bureau of Normalcy arrive and question them both. Rita admits that she doesn't know who she is, but finds a piece of paper with Laura's name and the words "Sisterhood of Data" on it, and uses Laura's name as her own. Rita's face stats to fall, and the agents take her away. Brain and Mallah watch from a nearby car, Mallah using binoculars, Brain figures that if he reverse=engineers the time machine, he can make his own and rule the world.
In the present at the manor, Paul lies in the bed and mumbles gibberish, as Larry looks on. Larry tries to comfort his son.
In the Underground, Jane prepares to sneak Kay out to buy shoes, without the other personas noticing. Kay takes the train up,
Vic finds Cliff on his laptop playing computer games while a woman, Ginger, keeps him "company" via a pop-up. He wonders why he's Cyborg, and Cliff tells him that he's practically a god and can bang anyone he wants. He wonders why Vic wants to change that, and tells Vic to talk to someone who cares. Vic walks off in disgust.
In 1917 at the Bureau HQ, the two agents take Rita to a room and tell her to sit down. They open the door to meta recruiting lab, and a bearded man walks out and is led away. A woman inside tells Rita to enter, and Rita goes in and reads a list of questions the doctor, Laura, has already prepared. Rita cheerfully admits that she doesn't know, and shows Laura the note. Laura shows Rita her desk plaque with her name and position of "Recruiter" on it. Rita asks who the Sisterhood is. Laura lights a match and holds it until Rita blow it out, and Laura concludes that Rita doesn't have telekinesis. She stamps Rita's file, identifying Rita as not a weapon,
In the present, Laura interrupts Cliff's game and asks him what he found out about the Sisterhood. He dismisses them as self-absorbed metahumans, who don't like Laura. When Laura says that Rita stole her time machine, Cliff doesn't care and Laura breaks her teacup on his head before walking off.
Rita is taken to the mail room where Holly tells her how to sort the mail. Rita enthusiastically embraces her new job, using her stretching powers to aid her. Shed finally admits that she's falling out of sorts since she doesn't know her name or where she comes from, and Holly suggests that they call Rita "Bendy". Rita cheerfully accepts the name, and Lloyd, Sachiko, Shelley, and Malcom come in to see the new arrival. Holly points them out to Rita, and they look away as Rita turns to look at them.
Later, Rita goes to the cafeteria and sits down with the agents who brought her in. They walk off to eat somewhere else, and Rita sees Laura sitting with some of the agents. Lloyd comes in and Rita greets him, and he tells Rita to come with him. He takes Rita to the Metas section in the basement where Holly and the others are eating and cheerfully greet Bendy. Sachiko asks Rita in Japanese if Rita read the Bureau Manual, and Rita is surprised that she understands Sachiko. The others aren't surprised and tell Rita to go with it, and Rita tells them that they should do something about having to eat in the basement. Malcolm tells Rita that meta-weapons get carted off to the front lines, while the rest of them work at the Bureau. or get carted off to an insane asylum. Rita says that she'll stay with them, and Shelley assures her that they still have ways to have fun.
Jane goes to the observation point and watches Kay, in the Jane body, walk down the street and find a pair of shoes in a store window. As Kay goes over to the window, she sees a girl ride up and par0sk her bicycle in front of the store, then go inside. Kay takes the bike and ride off, and Pretty Polly comes up and asks Jane what she's doing. Polly asks how Jane could let Kay go up, and Jane reminds her that they're a construct and kindness may be one of their only commodities. She goes back to the viewer, and Polly considers what Jane said and walks off.
Vic is out hiking and passes a couple. They take photos of him, and he sees them as they go on the Internet. He has Grid turn off the notifications and keeps hiking.
In 1917., Rita continues working in the mail room and finds a letter to Niles. There's a sign up to hold all correspondence for him, and Rita puts the newest letter with the rest. Shew finds Niles' coat among the letters and smells the familiar scent. Laura comes in and asks what's so important about Niles, and Rita tells Laura that she felt a twinge. She asks if Rita has remembered anything else, possibly about the Sisterhood, and Rita says that she hasn't.
Laura says that she knows a bit about the Sisterhood, and Shelley floats in, in her fog form, and causes a shared hallucination of a bar. The others are there, and Holly says that Shelley made the place for them. Rita realizes that they're the Sisterhood, and they give Rita a tiara and a drink. Laura has put on an exotic dressed and Shelley asks Rita if they're important in the future.
Rita still can't remember, and Laura assures her that it's okay. She tells Rita that the present is all that matters. They party and dance, and Rr ask where Malcolm is. Laura tells Rita to follow the pipe smoke, and Rita finds an invisible Malcolm in an adjoining room smoking and singing. She joins in and he appears, and when they're done Malcom invites Rita to sit with him. She does, and a canary lands on his shoulder. Malcolm says that he traded his heat for the canary, an opens his shirt to reveal that he has an empty cage where his heart was.
Malcolm puts the canary in its cage and tells Rita that it doesn't hurt as much as remembering. The others call them out and have Rita pick a word so they can make nonsense out of it. Rr does and they all cluck and dance like birds, They pick more words and dance as Malcolm films them.
In the present, Cliff is playing online blackjack, and Ginger tells him that his card is declined so she has to log off. She finds Vic hot, and Cliff figures that everything he's gone through has led to that moment so he'd realize he wants to be a better person for Clara and his grandson Rory. He breaks into tears and hugs all the computers.
In 1917, Rita and the others collapse in exhaustion. Rita wakes up and tells Laura that the previous night was pure joy, and she doesn't think she had it where she came from. Laura admits that their lives have never been happy, and sometimes they've been awful. The Sisterhood eventually decided to be happy anyway, and when Laura met them she believed she needed to protect their weird and wonderful ways. Rita figures the Sisterhood is protesting the Bureau with lives well lied, and asks what Laura believers. Laura says that she's more complicated.
Holly and Shelley are arguing over their relationship. Rita says that they should take a stand and stand for something. Lloyd, listening, says that he's lucky to be standing at all, and not everyone can take that kind of risk. Rita concedes that Lloyd might be right and lays thinking.
In the present, Kay rides he bike down the street and smiles. A man runs up and stops Kay, and Jane sees him through the viewer and tells Kay not to talk to the man. The man tells Kay that she's doing pretty good for just learning but that she should pay attention to the cars. He walks off and Kay looks after him and smiles.
When Paul wakes up, Larry tells him that he's sorry the Bureau involved him. Paul tells his father that he chose to get involved, and the Bureau was right all along. Larry insists that the Bureau is evil, and Paul angrily says that Larry wasn't thee for him as he grew up. When Larry tells Paul that he stayed away to protect Paul, his son tells him that he stayed away to protect himself. Larry angrily says that he didn't choose to have the Spirit merge with him, and he's always Paul. However, he done trying to be close to Paul if Paul doesn't want him there. He tells Paul that he finally forgives himself, even if Paul can't, and tells Paul to go. Paul goes without a word.
Vic walks up the mountain to the tree where his mother used to put rocks beneath a tree. He finds the rocks , remembers Lloyd telling that he can't know suffering without knowing who he is, and agrees. Vic remembers his mother telling him that the path he walks down is his choice, pockets one of the rocks, then walks away.
In 1917 at the Bureau cafeteria, Rita and Holly come in while everyone is eating. A lady laughs when Rita picks out a sandwich, and Rita ignores them and tells Holly to go with her. An agent yells an insult at them, and Rita goes back and sits down. The agents at the table move to other tables, and Holly sits at a neighboring table. Lloyd, Shelley, and Sachiko come in and say that Rita is out of her mind... in the best way possible. They get food and sit at the tables.
Rita loses control of her body and the agents watching say that it's grotesque. When Rita starts to go, one of her legs gives out and the agents watching gasp in horror Malcolm appears and tells Rita that he's got her, and tells her not to let them see her sweat. Shelley comes over, and Rita gets control of her body and the Sisterhood starts chanting and dancing. Sachiko uses one of her powers to turn all of the agents into clowns, and a security guard finally comes in and tells the Sisterhood to come with him. With Rita leading them, the Sisterhood join arms and match out.
The Sisterhood dance down the hallway and find the guard waiting for them. "He" changes into Laura, and the Sisterhood sigh in relief realizing that their ally has saved them. Laura says that she'll stand by them until the day she dies, but for now they have to go because the actual guards are on their way.
In the Underground station, Harrison, Polly, and the Secretary confront the waiting Jane. As the train with Kay returns, Harrison tells Jane that she may be the Primary, but he can't take such risks. Kay rides her bike off the train and she thanks Jane for the experience. As Kay rides off, Harrison tells Jane that Kay doesn't understand the danger. Jane says that Kay found a bit of joy for the first time in seventy years, and some things are worth the risk. Polly says that it would have been nice if all the Personas had been consulted beforehand, and Jane points out that Kay gets better, they get better and she's realized Kay's freedom is the next step.
Harrison tells Jane that she has no idea what growth looks like, and if Jane doesn't stop the divisive, Jane will get what she wants. Other Personas arrive and surround Jane, and Jane figures that Harrison is making idle threats. Jane walks off, and Harrison tells the others that they're not going to make any more idle threats.
When Cliff loses money at online poker, he breaks into tears and Ginger assures him that he'll bounce back. More bids come in for blueprints for his body and brain that he's put up, and wonders what he's doing. Cliff figures he has nothing left to do and accepts the bid.
Vic goes to Orsus Labs see a doctor about synthetic skin for himself, The receptionist confirms that he's made an online appointment under his real name and has Vic fill out a questionnaire. Vic sits down and looks at the question asking what he wants to change about himself and why, and stats writing in an answer.
In his room, Larry discovers the lump has appeared on his chest. He collapses in pain.
Rita goes down to storage and looks at the machine, and Malcolm comes in. When Rita jokingly says that she was hoping the machine would tell her why she's there, Malcolm tells her that he doesn't care why and just thanks his stars that Rita chose 1917 and understands if she wants to go back. Rita tells him that she's happy in 1917, and doesn't want to run because she's afraid of what the Bureau is becoming. She wonders if her purpose is to take the Sisterhood away from the Bureau to someplace safe. Malcolm suggests that Rita's purpose might have been to show them how to bend and stretch to a better world. Rita figures that she can't imagine what is better in the real world for them, but she found what she was looking for and more. She says that she's staying, and Malcolm tells her that's good and then starts to kiss Rita.
Somebody walks by out in the hallway, and Malcolm pulls away. He tells Rita that he made her something and gives her a paper clip that he reshaped into a heart, from a clip that she gave him earlier. Rita opens Malcom's shirt and puts the clip in his bird cage, and he promises that he'll guard it with his life.
In the present in her study, Laura vows that whatever the Sisterhood is after, it won't be her. She imagines the voices of the Sisterhood saying that maybe it will, and the fire in the fireplace spreads to form the Sisterhood's nonsense words, "Piffle Paffle".
